On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. Just a quick little dogfight here as we learn how to Dogfight in IL2 and use World War II aircraft the way they were meant to be flown; I had a pretty distinct advantage there in that fight so really nice work by Sunde to do as well as he did. 06:39 Sir in IL-2 today you can take on ANYTHING in the one-circle if you're in a Tempest. It's the most formidable dogfighter out there, with the exception of the Spitfire. People say the IL-2 Tempest is overmodelled - I kinda think they're right, with something that size being able to turn so sharply. The only downside is that when turning too sharp too fast your wing sometimes comes off with no warning :(

The grey area would be once he's clear of his aircraft and trying to escape. It is only illegal to shoot surrendering troops, it is perfectly legal to shoot retreating or escaping troops.
On the ground he can react so I say fair game. If he wants to live he better matrix that crap

It’s sort of funny/ironic that the few times Growling Sidewinder gets shot down, it is usually KIA with a round to face. 🤷♂️

Sunde showed great skill to stave off a stall into the trees, just enough to allow a belly into soft snow and survive? Very nice flying....👍👍

Using the Tempest on IL2 kind of feels like using cheats. The power, speed, armament and bubble canopy. Doesn't have the delicate control of a Spitfire or 109, which are like fencing swords, this is a battle axe.
I agree, especially after one of the last patches which fixed unrealistically fragile Tempest wings. The Tempest's 4 20mm high velocity cannons are unmatched.

I think one of the greatest strengths of the Tempest is its very high cruise speed. It is about as fast as late war 109s' top speed. Just being able to chase down planes that do not see you imo is a massive advantage. Also being able to pull lead turns on people with even less energy is just amazing.
It also works quite well to get out of situations. Not many aircraft can catch a Tempest at full power in a shallow dive.
Well you have to watch out for K4s though because they will destroy you if they know what they're doing

5:05 - Ah yes! The legendary IL-2 crashes. Even back in the original released in 2001, they were unparalleled and now they've advanced them to a whole new level. That groove in the snow is very cool.

And yeah its a good crate, idk if its just the way its modeled in IL-2, but it has rather lackluster perfomance. Its not very fast on the deck, does not climb super well, has mediocre turnrate.
In general it seems like a pretty weak aircraft compared to a Mustang or Tempest
Or god forbid it finds itself against a Spitfire MK14.

The tempest 2 would've been a menace, but with the end of the war and the jet age on the horizon it never saw full scale manufacturing. A true rival to the Fockewulf
Glad to see you flying WWII. I hope you enjoy learning the intricacies of the BFM in this era. I find dogfighting in WWII to be extremely difficult and extremely rewarding in all the right ways. As you mentioned your energy state is critical in these kinds of fights and managing your energy is supremely important. Often the goal of the defender is to equalize energy with his attacker and it is very common to see energy traps being used in IL2 BoX. The 2nd fight is a perfect example of this as the 109 rapidly equalized then gained and energy advantage in the fight.

Sitting in a damaged airplane waiting for the final killshot... That must have been an incredibly cruel and sad moment for any fighter pilot at that time.
I wouldn't be surprised if most WW2 pilots never reached that level of air combat theory. Adolf Galland maybe/probably but not most pilots.
The Tempest is as fast as mustang and turns like Hurricane, personally I think its FM is a bit optimistic.
It is generally regarded as the most dangerous piston engined fighter, especially at low altitude.
The Tempest is too slow in IL-2. The P51D is 30 kph faster than the Tempest at Sea level. Tempest sustain turn performance might be too optimistic tho. The initial turn seems correct.
Finnish pilots flying the Brewster Buffalo against Soviet Hurricanes thought Hurricanes turned very badly. This is just to give some perspective.
Nope. Wing loading on the tempest is lower than on the 109. It should have better turn, and MUCH better speed...
That escalated quickly, I mean that really got out of hand fast!
I've got a terrific write up from the British Air Ministry in February 1944, results from comparative performance testing of the Tempest MkV against a captured BF-109G2, which I believe was boost restricted to 1.35ata (about 1350hp at sea level) due to unresolved problems with the DB605 engine until September 1943 and the (late) G6. Here's some highlights: Climb, the climb of the 109 is superior to that of the Tempest at all heights, although it is not as pronounced below 5000ft. In zoom the Tempest is slightly superior with the dive started at the same speed, so long as the Tempest possesses the initial speed advantage when starting the climb and it has no problem holding the advantage so long as the speed is kept above 250mph. Dive, the 109 has strong initial dive acceleration however the Tempest is greatly superior in a prolonged descent, although not as marked in the early stages. Turning circle, the Tempest is slightly superior. Roll rate, equivalent under 350IAS although the Tempest is superior at higher speed. Conclusions, in attack the Tempest can always follow a 109 except into a slow, steep climb. In the combat area the Tempest should always maintain a high speed. In defence the Tempest can do anything except attempt a climb at slow speed.
Similar notifications for the Griffon Spit comparative test which I also have, except the 109 also out dives that one, initially. They warn outright, if a 109 dives or climbs just extend or disengage and recommit with better speed and position or you could very easily be in trouble.
It's just surprising a boost restricted mid-42 109 can be so very dangerous to Griffon Spits and Tempests with about 650hp advantage and a couple more years of development. It's pretty underpowered until the DB605D appeared in October 44. It's just so small and has a thumping amount of torque. There's only about 300rpm between cruise and combat engine settings, which was another definite combat advantage, if you get bounced in cruise the 109 has a very quick reaction time to go from cruise to combat condition whilst most other aircraft require up to a minute of run up time or you foul the motor, something which was a big deal when ranging over enemy territory to a combat zone trying to conserve fuel. The 109 could do this a lot more combat ready than other aircraft, anything with a Daimler could do that.

The Tempest is by far my favorite prop in IL-2 Sturmovik, excellent maneuverability, awesome top speed, great all around vision, and powerful armament. Its a beast not to be reckoned with.

It might be hell to learn at the start but once you start lining up high deflection shots regularly it starts to feel so satisfying

I've never lost to a Tempest in my 109. The only ones I have trouble with is a Spitfire with a good pilot.

I still haven't been able to get any of the modules for IL-2 to actually install and run, I've been enjoying DCS in VR I wanted to try IL-2, got them on sale when you pointed it out but when I open the launcher it never stops downloading the game client lol

I would love to see a Tempest vs LA-5FN fight. Arguably the best Allied fighters of the war, at least at lower altitudes, and could have squared off had history played out a little different.
Even a fw 190A4 trashes the LA7. The LA5 would get destroyed by a tempest

not sure he was the greatest. he just took advantage of the enemies bad situation for most of his kills. he was outstanding at shooting down bomber, transports, and new poor pilots though

Looking at the Tempest, it occurs to me that the oil cooler under the engine looks similar to the oil cooler on the Mustang. Supposedly the oil cooler on the Mustang was an innovative design and actually added a bit to the Mustangs top speed. Does anyone know if the oil cooler design on the Tempest was influenced by that of the Mustang, or is the apparent similarity simply superficial and coincidental?

Not related to this video, but in a F-15 vs F-16 BVR 1v1 video you said that an AIM-120 fired at Mach 2.0 is extremely dangerous. So I am wondering, what would it be like to defend an AIM-54 Phoenix fired by the YF-12 Blackbird interceptor while it is going over Mach 3?
And I think that same question could be asked about the MiG-31 with its insane long range missiles (R-33 or R-37 for modernized MiG-31BM)

Sunde did an amazing job here, in both fights.
The Tempest has so many advantages on paper compared to the 109 G6 (fortunately for Sunde the Late version), so defending against the Tempest with a height advantage flown by a very experienced pilot is quite the challenge. You can see that Sunde really knows what he's doing and both fights were a pleasure to watch.
Time for a rematch with aircrafts inversed maybe? Also, how about the Tempest vas the Dora?

Yeah the 109 G6 late with MW50 is no slouch, but it is handicapped against a Tempest, especially with GS behind the stick.
The good thing about the 109 is that its a small target, and with the slats in can throw away tons of speed very quickly, the Tempest is massive and hangs on to its energy.
So sudden changes in direction and reversals will be very hard for a Tempest to keep up with. Very fun matchup
