I believe that in a few years we will look back and realize what a golden age of shooters we are living right now. We must consider ourselves lucky. Thanks for putting your time and efforts in revitalizing this community. #CottonFantasy
The last Golden Age was on 360 era ! Lot of new shmup or "never release on console" ! Today since 2 or 3 years, it's lot of reissue ... but we have some great and good games who are new ! But for me the Golden Age was end of 80's and 90's, and second golden age in 360 period.
Hey buddy, sorry for the late reply. Totally agree and am doing my best to enjoy this revival while it lasts. Just added you for a shot at the giveaway.
Agreed. It's pretty wild right now. One thing, though, is that I've never played a Cotton game in my life. I would like to buy I don't have old hardware to play the original game versions (like on the Saturn). What I would really like to know, is what is the best way to play the re-released digital versions of Cotton games? As far as I know, they all suffer from brutal lag and I have been hesitant to spend my money on laggy game. Is there a good re-released port out there on a modern or semi-modern console? I own a Wii U, PS3, PS4, Switch and a Steam Deck.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos. Due to the fact that shooters aren't mainstream anymore, I sort of rely on your videos to essentially keep me informed on what to play next. Thanks again for all you do! #CottonFantasy
@@mikaelandersson1288 I think this new Fantasy game was a success and if they can keep the same team involved, follow it up with an improved sequel that builds on the first game. I know a lot of people that really enjoyed this one and would look forward to a sequel.
You have gotten me into shooters. A genre that seemed impossible for me to get into. Ive played and beaten both touhou 7 and 8 on easy, even beating 8 1cc on my first try. i hope to continue to try and get better and play more games. #CottonFantasy
That's great! So glad to hear that and the Touhou 7 and 8 recommendation working out. They're really fantastic easy modes to get started with. I'll bet you can do this one too, it's not overly tough and always fair. Plus you have a ton of characters to eventually try it with. Just added you to the giveaway!
Killer review as always! Just got my copy from play asia yesterday for the PS4. Playing it on my PS5, I personally didn't notice much lag if any at all. From what I tried out so far, it played great and very smooth. Thanks for the video, another banger.
Been singing this game's praises since its original Japanese release. A feature-packed and really well-designed shooter with lots of replay value. Not sure if I prefer it over Cotton Reboot!, but both games are stellar. Hope it does well enough for us to get even more Cotton in the future!
Yeah, the two games are so different it's hard to compare. I have to admit, Reboot does it for me visually, but in terms of gameplay and longevity I think Fantasy/RocknRoll takes it. Aside from the original game, and maybe Boomerang, this one is in my top 3 now. It's just so well put together and a lot of fun in Hard mode.
I have watched a few reviews on this game. Your review, as always, blows the other reviews out of the water! You always put so much more thought and care into your videos. You can tell you really love this genre! Thanks again Junkie!! #COTTONFANTASY
Thanks. Sometimes it takes me longer and I can't really super timely videos like some others do, so I miss the trend and rush. But I like taking my time with them as often as possible within reason. I appreciate the feedback. Also just added you for the giveaway.
Welcome! And I hope you enjoy some of my other work. I did a top 5 hardest shooters on the PSX video a while back that was a lot of fun. Although Einhander wasn’t in there it was a pretty close call against one of the other picks. I always loved it for its presentation and music. One of my favorites on the PSX along with RType Delta.
It’s only May but it’s already been a busy year for Shmups! And saying that, I’m guilty as charged of neglecting this absolute banger of a game that I got on Japanese release and instead, playing other great games released in the first 5 months of the year! It’s been awesome revisiting this top notch review and it has made me want to slap that cart in to my switch and pay this game the justice it deserves. The polygonal look is simple but it moves at a solid frame rate and has a stunning level design…It’s Cotton if it was released on Naomi arcade boards and ported the Dreamcast which is a huge plus for me! Thanks for re-releasing this review and paying it the love it deserves once again….oh, and 19.9K subscribers…..congrats man, 20K will soon be there 💪💪
Man, my reply is so late to this, I've already crossed that 20K! haha. Gotta learn my lesson with these giveaway, the mountain of comments is awesome but also killing me.
@@ShmupJunkie lol. No bother dude, I honestly don’t expect replies as I follow you on so many other platforms, just like to leave comments for other users to see to help with the channel.
Imported Rock & Roll after your recommendation and loved it! Side bonus was playing as Ria sold me on Psyvariar Delta as well. We need more shooter crossovers!
Nobody is hopeless it just seems that way. They are hard games and take a lot of practice. But the most important thing is you are playing and enjoying them. I'd rather do that than play them as some kind of a chore to be good. So if you are loving it, keep doing what you're doing.
Your video got me hooked on Cotton Reboot so now I’ve played every single Cotton game this past year, im super stoked for this game! Also fantastic video as usual!!
Multiple Characters with differing playstyles, awesome music, Multiple branching paths!? This sounds really awesome installment. I totally buy this one, but not now as I haven't completely dived deep in Reboot. When I have really finished Reboot, I'll totally going to get Fantasy afterwards.
just wanna say, i've always had an interest in shmups but never took the dive. after watching yours and electric underground videos for a few days i bought deathsmiles on steam and got my arcade stick out of storage from my short stint with fighting games. played through twice on difficulty 2, rank one, and probably used 2 continues on the first playthrough...probably 5 on my second cuz drinks lol. but OMG it is so much fun. being 38 with a family...being able to sit down for 30 minutes and blast through a game is so great. last couple years modern with open worlds, i just don't have the time for it. i've played lifeforce, abadox and gradius on the nes and loved them...happy i decided to try out the more modern stuff. i'll probably never get good at these games, but thanks for the channel for a direction to get started
I'll always have a soft spot for the nes and those games, I loved those three too. Abadox was really cool and kind of unknown now. But I was the same way for a long time and not paying much attention to how many good news games were coming out. I missed the whole bullet hell era mostly and was playing other things. It wasn't until much later I went back and saw some of the great games I was missing. Like many Deathsmiles is the one that got me into trying them and it just went from there. Seems like it was a point of entry for many.
Happy you showcased this one, having trouble finding shmups for the modern consoles and this one just looks amazing. Reminds me of old Dreamcast days but with better graphics. Good to know it's actually good on the Switch as well, gives me options to get on the console it goes on sale for first.
Yep! Performs great on Switch. Not everyone is keen on the 3D and want the 2D pixel art, but those that give the game a chance will see how charming the art is. Definitely that early Dreamcast feel and I like what they did. This game was really popular in the community among serious players too. So that tells you something in terms of how well it’s put together. You won’t go wrong with this one.
Wow, this review is impressive! I have played barely Cotton 1 and 2 in the Mames and not touched them so much, because now seem like Cotton has come with a long history of remakes and adapting to the newer generations! While I admit I don't know much of the homage characters, this makes me remember the good Otomedius and it's homage to a lot of Konami Shmups, definitely I have to try this and the newer Cotton remakes!! P.D: What is your opinion about the future remake of Tatsujin / Truxton? Have a nice day 😀

As someone getting back into shmups recently (largely thanks to you and Mark MSX) these new Cotton releases have been perfect for me. I also wanted to say that I appreciate the amount of effort and enthusiasm that you put into your videos; they always get me pumped to pop into a shmup session. Keep up the great work. #COTTONFANTASY
If by the end of a video you're hyped for a game session then I did my job. So thank you for the comment. It's always good to hear the effect my videos have after all the time I put into them. And I just added you for the giveaway.
Horizontal shmups are something I played all the time back on SNES, and seems the industry has drifted away from in favor of vertical type. #COTTONFANTASY looks to be a return to those glory days, and I hope to give it a shot.
Loved the Cotton series going back to the early 90s on my PC Engine. Also was a bit of an inspiration for Magical Chase of which I owned the US version. As an avid shooter collector back in the day I had to own them all #CottonFantasy #Thisisnotthecode had to throw that in just in case 😉
The PCE port was the only Cotton game I had played for a very long time until many years later after the Saturn was long gone. Still will always love the original most, but I'm really enjoying the new releases. You're IN for the giveaway!
Never heard of that trick before so I will definitely have to give it a shot! Thanks for letting me know. Would be really cool if I get it to work. Also just added your for the giveaway.
Got this on Playasia a few months ago after seeing the awesome Cotton Rock N Roll review you did. Maybe this is the best Cotton game so far. Pretty cool effects
I watched your other #cottonfantasy video months ago and was tempted but not quite sold. I put it in the SLG basket and just left it there. I watched this video and this time around i am sold. This really reminds me of a parodius / otomedius / harmful park thrown in with Gradius 5 shifting cameras, and i played way too much G5 back in the day. So i purchased it and now am looking forward to spending hours on this one too. Thanks again for not only revisiting this game and updating the international release, but for your continued top quality reviews and content.
You’re welcome! Sounds like the second time around was the charm. I don’t doubt you’ll likely put plenty of time into it. It’s one of the best new shmups to come around in a long while. And it feels very much like a Dreamcast style presentation. Also added you for the giveaway just in case!
Great videos, lots of useful information! Discovered an amazing TH-camr. Thank you for your work! I have a huge request. Make a video about exclusive shmups coming out only for PC and DOS in 1990s - 2010. Thaks!
Glad you found me! There’s a lot of great videos here to enjoy and hope you find some more fun and useful. I grew up playing a lot of PC games at the time and building my own like most did back then. So it’d be fun to do and a good idea. It’ll be a long while as I’ve got a very full plate and little time, but it’s a good idea and I’ve got some background to do it.
Got mine yesterday (both PS4 and NSW). Actually, there is another physical Reggae of Cotton F as ntasy spart from the SLG version here in Germany, even with a different Cover Artwork. Some ININ games had this here. Again, great Video, and I really enjoy this one. Without your Cotton Reboot Video, maybe I never have had a look on this games.
You're welcome! Glad to hear my video helped show you the game and get your attention. It's such a good game and I was hoping more would support it on my recommendation. I think it's selling well for them.
Fairly new subscriber here. Been binge watching your content the last couple weeks. Great stuff and great review. Been a Cotton fan since picking up the TG16 original back in the day, loving the new game so far. #CottonFantasy
Welcome! Thank you for watching and enjoying the content, it's the most I could ask. I'm a huge fan of the original PCE game too and it's still my fav version because of the incredible music. Just added you for a shot in the giveaway
Awesome review! I love the Cotton series, this convinced me to get it :) love your channel man, keep up the awesome work! The switch is a STG gamers dream come true with all these releases
This game seem to be gorgeous ! Love his presentation ! All this colors on screen, the animation so fluid etc ! Good review ! Thank for that. I'm happy to learn it have a hard difficulty ! Hope you the best.
Cotton is a series I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I have so far, so while I wasn't that excited for Fantasy/RocknRoll, watching this review has definitely changed that! #COTTONFANTASY
I can't say everyone who plays it will love it, but I've yet to come across someone that said they got it and didn't really enjoy it. It's just a very well made game. And I just added you for the giveaway.
Looks like a lot of fun! I've never played anything from this series before, but all the different characters' mechanics and the soundtrack make for a pretty convincing argument to give it a go. Thanks for showing it off, Junkie! #CottonFantasy
You're welcome. It's an excellent game and definitely has a lot of longevity. It's been highly reviewed by pretty much everyone including my original review, so it's a pretty safe bet. And you're IN for the giveaway.
I love your reviews! You deal with the topics in detail and present this to your viewers in an entertaining way. I'm also pleased that the somewhat lost Cotton franchise is making a comeback. #CottonFantasy
this is easily the best new shmup released in the past year or so, in my opinion. So much fun and love went into it. Great to see this review back up and revamped, you do the game justice!
I don't say this too often but that one collection was a bridge too far. It's true those games were running at 10-12 frames of delay, nearly double of even most mini consoles. For a modern console that's pretty unacceptable. That doesn't mean they were totally unplayable. A friend on my discord still got the 1CC in Cotton 2 using it. But it was definitely a lot more than we normally see. Since then they have made some improvements and cut a frame or two from what I heard. Some Saturn games are difficult to emulate.
Wow I didn't think this cotton game would be so good! I have phisically the reboot and saturn collection. And digitally the others for the switch. Thanks for making the Tiger shark video! I was really looking forward to it. I'm still waiting for my copy. Keep the good work!!! 😀 #cottonfantasy
The backgrounds are absolutely incredible. This is random but some of the art direction there made me think how amazing a modern day Gunstar Heroes could actually be.
We'd all love to see Treasure come back for a proper sequel yeah. I like the 2D sprite work remakes as of late, like Pocky & Rocky, but they did a really great job here with the backgrounds and making the stages feel like a world. I was skeptical from the screen shots so was happy to see it turned out so well.
@@ShmupJunkie Yeah - most of the time 2.5d high res interpretations of pixel art classics leave me just wishing it was traditional art, but this game is absolutely beautiful. They nailed it. I felt the same about R Type Final 2 as well. It’s good to see some incredible art direction in modern interpretations of classics that don’t just come off looking cheap.
Speaking of Blue Revolver, I'd be interested in seeing you do a video on that one. It was one of the first shmups I got for Steam a year or so ago since it's Steam OS and runs on my Linux desktop. Unfortunately, Cotton Reboot does not.
I remember you making a comment long ago where you didn’t have confidence in this game based on the footage, but I ended up preordering the Japanese version. Man, I’m so glad I did. This game is phenomenal, and the gameplay changing depending on the character.
Yeah, the early footage and graphics didn't impress me much so I was worried. But it turned out to be so much better and I was glad to see it. Game turned out fantastic.
This channel has completely renewed my love for old-school games and shmups. Ordered this one and deathsmiles from strictly limited a while ago. Still waiting for my order and hopefully it will arive soon ^^ #Cottonfantasy
@@ShmupJunkie Just got it last week! That and Deathsmiles from strictly limited and I bought a Analogue SG and looking forward to the genesis video. Thanks alot for the inspiration and guidance i the shmup jungle
I'm so glad shooters have made such a comeback. I was sad when street fighter 2 temporarily derailed the popularity of shooters. I love Cotton fantasy, the backgrounds are beautiful like Klonoa or Tomba 2. This shooter has the magic!
Thanks for the great review! I love playing the OG CoreGraphix and NeoGeo Cotton games. I recently went to a retro arcade hall in my neighborhood, man that was cool, operation wolf erc. …. Hope playing Cotton on arcade cabs one day as well…. #COTTONFANTASY
I first tried out the Cotton series last year with the release of Reboot, and I'm definitely a fan! I want this new game more than ever now, especially after watching your review. Speaking of which, I really appreciate you doing latency tests for all of these games, it means a lot to someone who's really sensitive to input lag. #COTTONFANTASY
You're welcome and that's why I do them yeah. So you know great releases like this are no problem and you can buy with confidence. It's pretty much my standard procedure these days. Just added you for the giveaway.
In regards to the bullet spreads being a bit sparse for Psyva Ria to build up a buzz combo, you can buzz enemies as well to keep your combo going Love the channel, and congrats on 20k!!
The first Cotton game I played was the PC-Engine/Turbografx 16 version which I still own. I miss the old school shooters, especially the rocking soundtracks that accompanied them. It's great to see them making a comeback. Thank you for the great review! This one definitely looks fun! #COTTONFANTASY
Yeah the original PCE Cotton will always be my all time fav. What an amazing soundtrack that game has, lost to time unless you own that version. Fantasy is in my Top 3 now for sure as it's so well done. Better than many of the other mainline games, even if it doesn't necessarily play like them.
@@ShmupJunkie Thank you for the reply! Again, I love your channel and content. The PC-ENGINE is the system that got me hooked on shooters, then the Saturn. By the way, did I get in for a chance for the game? Cheers from Denver!
Those homage stages are great. I love how each unlockable character brings the play style from their respective games. I gravitated towards Tacoot (boss character) for having an R-Type playstyle. Bullets get past her staff if not released but when the player shoots the staff it clears bullets ala force pod. Great review on the game! #cottonfantasy
Yeah Tacoot was a super powerful character, at least I thought so. I was wrecking things with him. The cray variety in them all and extra stages really adds a lot to the game and longevity. Thank you for watching again and you're IN for the giveaway.
Definitely my second favorite Cotton game after 2/Boomerang, glad you made an updated review for it.. Fine was my favorite character to use personally outside of Cotton herself. Hoping you check out the new shmup DRAINUS that was shadowdropped by Team Ladybug the devs for Touhou Luna Nights and Deedlit in Wonderland. While those games are more action platformers they usually have shmup mechanics interspersed in like Grazing (recontextualized fantastically despite the different genre) and Polarity. So it was cool to see them make a straight up shmup now, after years of grazing the surface(pun intended). I haven't had the chance to play much of it yet myself but it's definitely more of a traditional shmup with a cool gimmick like Darius and R-Type with some Rayforce thrown in for good measure. I hope to get to see your thoughts on it soon, and thanks for the recommends of Moon Dancer and Grand Cross.
You're welcome! And yeah, I think I'll be the last person in the community to finally play Drainus as I'm swamped on other videos. Life of a content creator I suppose, more time editing than playing. But I'll hit it soon enough. Really glad the other vid was helpful too. Moon Dancer and Grand Cross were both also wonderful.
As a huge fan of Cotton since the Dreamcast days. I saw this one was coming to PS4. While I'm indifferent to censorship, I also make a habit of not buying a game if it is actually censored on characters that are obviously adults. Can you confirm if this is censored on PS4 or not? Thank you!
Good to see you back! I hope lady luck is on my side on this one, I'm going through some stuff! #COTTONFANTASY In any case, thanks for the review, as always!
Will be getting this on steam when it lands there.Looking forward to it, especially as it has got 2 positive reviews from you.I love Psyvariar ans can't wait to try that character.
This seems like a modern, colorful shmup that won't make my eyes bleed. And who can hate Cotton? Thanks for the amazing video again dude. #COTTONFANTASY
Both versions are great this time. If you want it for Switch then go that route. The difference between them is pretty minor with the PS4 port having a more stable frame rate. But I had zero issues playing my Switch copy.
Hello Junkie. Fan of your channel, first time commenting. I think you might want to look into Evercade. They've always been about replicating the retro collection experience with physical carts but have now announced a new handheld model with TATE mode as well as partnerships with Irem and Toaplan. Seems to be very much in your wheelhouse.
I’m just a bit familiar with evercade but haven’t used one before. But if IREM and Toaplan/Tatsujin corp are on board for a new piece of hardware I’m certainly interested. If it can measure up in terms of performance I’d be pretty excited for it and gladly try it out. I’ll have to do some research on that. Thx for the heads up.
Psyvariar Delta has been in and out of my Switch for the last few years. Fun game. Had no clue there was a crossover, since I had wrote if off early due to art style. Thanks for shedding light on those details in your review! #cottonfantasy
You're welcome and yeah, the Psyvariar character is one of the best parts of this new game. Super fun to use and really changes it up. You're IN for the giveaway.
Another good vid - that blowfish was the coolest, which you featured it more. - I had to put the volume up pretty high to hear you over the music - which was fine because the music is pretty good. - Have you looked into ducking ( side-chaining )?
I've been doing all kinds of stuff to try and improve the speech while not completely killing the background music, but no result is consistent. It sounds great on my speakers and computer, and on headphones, but then like crap on a mobile phone. So I fix it to sound good on a crappy phone speaker but it doesn't sounds good otherwise. It's been a constant battle unfortunately. I always have the music turned way down compared to the speech, so I wonder if YT is doing something to the audio levels and mucking it up. I haven't had good luck with automatic ducking and seem to need to adjust the music down manually. Some videos it works out great while others it ends up a problem. My solution may be to just turn down the bg music even lower, to barely audible, but then it takes away from the video. It's been a struggle no matter how many videos I watch on the matter lol
@@ShmupJunkie - I bet its a lot of work. - I could still hear you clearly and enjoyed it - so cant complain, but I did have the sound up quite high on my Apple earpods. - I know ducking works great in Ableton, but other software - not sure. - anyway - another great vid !
Happy that we're getting a new #CottonFantasy game after some of the misses we had last year with the updated ports. Hopefully, this will pave the way for newer games of older classics.
Another long in depth video without any dull parts. Thanks again for another shmup treat! Love the cotton series for it's hyper silly style. A gem in the world of shmups. #cottonfantasy
There's a ton of character options to unlock, you'll have plenty of content to work on. But I don't remember Silk being one of them. She was playable in Cotton Reboot, but I don't think she was in Fantasy.
I never played a Cotton game but all your Cotton videos makes me want to change that. I enjoy all your videos by the way. Thank you. Who knows, I might even be a winner someday. #COTTONFANTASY
So happy that its the year 2022 and still the spark with some games is the same as it was back then! I am gaming since 1989 and I am really grateful for the developers that keep the retro feel alive being shmps, platforms, rpgs or what ever the genre. Awesome video as always and awesome Cotton title which I have to get my hands on as soon as possible! Keep up the great work man you are a breeze in the scene.. #CottonFantasy
I know this is late, and maybe you already got it by now. But I'm adding you for the giveaway and wish you luck. Thank you for the kind comment as I really enjoy working on these.
I bought this thinking i would love it every bit as much as Reboot buy now I'm not so sure. I'm hoping the game will grow on me as most shmups do as I get better and start figuring out the games systems. The thing is they removed so many of Cottons mechanics it's left me feeling like there isn't much to her gameplay. Like oversimplified ...you have a bomb, an auto shot, and 3 magic attacks in this and it all seems to revolve around canceling as many bullets as possible using her magic attacks and trying to keep the multiplier at its maximum of 99. Is that it or am I missing some interesting mechanics, scoring or otherwise? I'd really appreciate anyone's input .... I loved Cotton Reboot because it's a total dopamine rush at all times. There are a ton of mechanics and nuances in Reboot that seem to be missing here, the biggest missing mechanic is the "super" state, which you're always trying to build up and when triggered is how you rapidly drive up your score. First of all you have 4 diff. magic types, each with 3 levels of power AND each with a sub-type magic, for example blue does a lightning attack (3 variations of power level) but it also gives you a temporary shield by holding down the button. Green crystals give you a type of bomb that rains down giant boulders but if you hold this down it converts enemies into crystals, which gives you further options. There's a wonderful feedback loop in Reboot that is so satisfying. I also noticed that on the Switch in handheld mode, the movement of the character is smoother leading to better control and less deaths. I'm hoping that the game just hasn't clicked for me yet, but even with the variety that the different playable characters will bring I fear it won't have the depth I'm looking for.
You’re right about it being much simpler than the original Cotton. Those games were way complex and had more mechanics. This new game was super popular upon release with the shmup crowd for scoring. But I think it’s mostly due to the variety of characters and level paths like you said. So people were playing different routes with new characters. I’m not as big of a scoring junkie so for me it was just the variety of being able to play so many different paths with various characters. But it’s without a doubt a traditional shmup in terms of mechanics. The original cotton 2 especially was way more complex. I found the grazing mechanic here for psyvariar being the most engaging in terms of scoring but it’s not anything previous games didn’t do. I’m curious how competitive the leaderboards have become now that it’s been out for a long while.
It all feels, Dreamcast to me (and probably not the only one). Especially that sky castle fortress. The colour scheme reminds me of power stone when I see that ship. I love it.
Spot on, it very much feels like a later era Dreamcast look and style. And while not OG Cotton I can dig it even if some don't. It's just a really good game regardless and everyone who is playing it is really enjoying it.
This looks pretty sweet. I was a big fan of Cotton and Cotton 2 and this looks like a nice evolution of the series. Great video and very informative as usual mate. #COTTONFANTASY
Sorry for the crazy late reply my friend, these giveaway comments are out of control and I need to find a faster way haha. You're IN for the giveaway too. I'll get to cover Panorama now for the MD video.
I've really never say down and played a cotton game! I'm really weird and prolly missed some good shmups because I tend to stay with space ship games and not the ones you walk around or see the bodies of the character at all! I'm gonna give it a wack!! Great review bro as always #cottonfantasy
Funny enough, some of my favorites are non spaceship. There's some really good ground based ones like Elemental Master and Outzone. It's nice to have some variety so I don't mind at all. GIve it a shot you may be surprised by how deep it is. Just added you for the giveaway.
Awesome man thank you! Ya man I tried out the ps1 cotton last night and wow its pretty solid! I'm gonna give some of the different types a shot starting tonight fixing to boot up the retro tablet!
Whoa, was blindsided by the Sanvein content. Forgot this was a Success game. Need to revisit Sanvein, such a great concept and very Raycrisis Y2K-y aesthetics. Thanks again #CottonFantasy
Yeah, even though the Psyvariar angle has been the most popular and is a great mechanic, it was cool to see how interesting the Sanvein special stage turned out. They put a lot of time into making those two really unique. You're IN for the giveaway.
My first Cotton game was Reboot on the switch and that game was a lot of fun. I honestly think Fantasy looks even better due to so many choices with the character selection. Hoping the SLG physical copies last a little bit because my wallet really could use a break right now lol. I'll be picking this up down the line for sure. Looks like there is a lot of fun to be had.
another awesome, deep-dive review / overview ... after your video on Cotton Reboot i went out and scored a physical copy, which ended up being a massive hit with my 5 yr old and became the first game she ever brought to the end credits on her own (albeit she ate though about a billion dollars in virtual quarters). First sale that comes along and this one will have to get added to the collection too #CottonFantasy
That’s what we like to hear! Getting a new generation playing some shmups early. I’m sure she would enjoy this one too. Cotton was always a hit with the kids. You’re in for the giveaway
@@ShmupJunkie funny thing is: when i inquire about video games for approx 3-6yr olds, there's just an infinite amount of recommendations for stuff that looks kid friendly via mascots (i.e. mario/sonic), but are often games that require a lot of buttons and triggers and learning how to use joysticks to navigate 3d space and fulfill somewhat complicated tasks (find this thing, bring it to this place, and use it on this object in order to advance) ... which frustrates my kids to no ends... but if you drop 'em in front of a joystick, up down left right, and just one or two buttons, a simple task (shoot and avoid getting shot) and give em infinite continues (so, basically arcade titles), they'll slap buttons until they pass out slapping buttons.
Aww yeah, another Cotton review on Cotton Junkie my favorite Cottontube channel. This looks great though, I'm definitely going to have to play it at some point. #CottonFantasy
@@ShmupJunkie Woo! If'n I don't win I'll just pick up a copy. I'm a pretty casual SHMUP player but I really enjoy games like Cotton or Darius for being fun even for us light-players. You ever played my favorite SHMDOWN, Downwell? It is kind of a platformer/shmup hybrid but I think the title "SHMDOWN" needs to be enshrined for it. It has so much shooting/verticality/scoring that I really feel it fits more alongside a good shooter than a platformer.
Been playing Rock n Roll since release and it's great! I really enjoy how much the extra characters change the gameplay. Good luck to those entering to win the code! Enjoy👍
The awesome character roster is definitely where it blows all the other games in the series away. They really made most of them feel like you're playing a different game. I've yet to find anyone that didn't like this game.
I don't fully like the poligonal visuals, as I saw some enemies kind of basic. But all those additional characters are awesome for the replayability... Let's see 😄. Really nice review man, as always. Cannot wait for the complete Megadrive shmups video!! #COTTONFANTASY
I like that the review touches on the different gameplay types that the characters represent. It would be easy to just say there's a variety of playstyles available, but with this review players can go in knowing a bit about how some of these game modes will feel. The sheer variety almost seems like R-Type Final 2 with all the DLC already included, so the variety is there for people who don't like the standard mode as much. Electric Underground will have no excuse to not review the whole thing this time! ;) #COTTONFANTASY
Lol, yeah no extra DLC in this one, all the characters are there. Actually I stand corrected, apparently SILK was a special Amazon exclusive feature you can only get that way. Even I haven't seen or used her which is too bad, as I usually like playing with her faster and small character sprite. The stand out feature in this game is the sheer character variety and how different they all play, so it really wouldn't have done the game justice to not go into it a bit. Especially when you have such unique ones like Ria from Psyvariar that introduces bullet grazing. I just added you to the giveaway!
I don’t believe either console version is two player. Supposedly that’s exclusive to the exaArcadia version only in Japan arcades. But this home version has all the extra homage stages the arcade doesn’t.
This is why i don't think the shmup genre is "dead" because it's "outdated" or something like that, i just think it's "slept on" , there's a lot that can be done with them but most high budget devs are not even trying. There's probably a lot of other genres in the same situation waiting to be taken to the next level
So far the smaller indie devs are killing it. I wouldn't be surprised if the bigger devs struggle a bit to catch up. Konami or similar releasing another big name would really help of course, but it would have to live up to the hype.
yeah I'm not planning on a copy of Panorama anytime soon. Not too big on 3D rail shooters but that one is as good as I can imagine. Crazy what they pulled off.
Great Re-Review! Im looking forward to using Kawase, Cotton, & the Psyvariar Character (been missing me some BUZZ action!). Psyvariar 2 is in my top 5 favorite Dreamcast Schmups & there's barely any coverage of it on TH-cam. I don't even think there's a single review, not even from Bullet Heaven. Possible video idea for you, The Psyvariar Series. I'd love to learn its history & I believe you'd be the best to present it. Just a thought. #CottonFantasy
Not a bad idea and I need to play them more myself. Super cool and unique series. It's always a struggle finding time on which game to do next. Just added you for the prize.
You're welcome and awesome to hear. They've made a huge comeback but it'll always be underreported in the big mags. You're IN for the giveaway.
@@ShmupJunkie What do you think should be the next improved reboot in the Cotton series?
@@mikaelandersson1288 I think this new Fantasy game was a success and if they can keep the same team involved, follow it up with an improved sequel that builds on the first game. I know a lot of people that really enjoyed this one and would look forward to a sequel.
@@ShmupJunkie Well... actually what I meant was not a sequel to Cotton Fantasy but an improved version of one of the original games.
These are great choices, make sure to also try Touhou 9
And Touhou 13 aswell, it's one of the more modern touhou games that are beginner friendly.
Killer review as always! Just got my copy from play asia yesterday for the PS4. Playing it on my PS5, I personally didn't notice much lag if any at all. From what I tried out so far, it played great and very smooth. Thanks for the video, another banger.
Nope, no noticeable lag at all, runs at 3 frames even on Switch. Great game and a great port job!
Also just added you for the giveaway.
congrats on 20k champ
Thanks! Saw that happen today too. Long live shooters 🤘
I love that there's a whole stage based on Sanvein. YOU HAVE THE PRIVILEDGE TO CONTINUE THIS MISSION
Right! The Sanvein stage is really cool too, not a typical shmup stage. They really did good with most of the homage stages, especially that one.
Just discovered your channel and I love it! Just wondering what you thought of einhander?
@@ShmupJunkie that should be your next list video. Your favorite shmups. Watching your vids, I'm like those are cool but I would play on easy. 😂
I’m hopeless at Shoot em ups but love your channel. Just because I’m rubbish doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy them. Will be picking up this beauty today.
Wow awesome! Glad both me (and Timmy) could get you giving them all a shot.
Multiple Characters with differing playstyles, awesome music, Multiple branching paths!? This sounds really awesome installment. I totally buy this one, but not now as I haven't completely dived deep in Reboot. When I have really finished Reboot, I'll totally going to get Fantasy afterwards.
glad to see this genre still alive and well, i played all sorts of styles but hold some Shmups games to heart
It’s seen quite a resurgence the last few years and I couldn’t be happier. A mini renaissance for the genre.
just wanna say, i've always had an interest in shmups but never took the dive. after watching yours and electric underground videos for a few days i bought deathsmiles on steam and got my arcade stick out of storage from my short stint with fighting games. played through twice on difficulty 2, rank one, and probably used 2 continues on the first playthrough...probably 5 on my second cuz drinks lol. but OMG it is so much fun. being 38 with a family...being able to sit down for 30 minutes and blast through a game is so great. last couple years modern with open worlds, i just don't have the time for it. i've played lifeforce, abadox and gradius on the nes and loved them...happy i decided to try out the more modern stuff. i'll probably never get good at these games, but thanks for the channel for a direction to get started

It's a great hori shmup as well, we all loved it! You're IN for the prize
Loved the Cotton series going back to the early 90s on my PC Engine. Also was a bit of an inspiration for Magical Chase of which I owned the US version. As an avid shooter collector back in the day I had to own them all
#CottonFantasy #Thisisnotthecode had to throw that in just in case 😉
The PCE port was the only Cotton game I had played for a very long time until many years later after the Saturn was long gone. Still will always love the original most, but I'm really enjoying the new releases. You're IN for the giveaway!
Waiting for that on PC.
Possibly. It's definitely in my top 3 along with the original and Boomerang.
Any news on a Steam release? I saw an article saying it was gonna be there, but found nothing.
Not yet. Reboot got one eventually so I’m hoping sooner or later. But nothing official yet.
loved your review information! just snagged this on Switch via Prime day deal...hyped to play this soon!
@@ShmupJunkie super! I'll be waiting
Cotton Reboot is the first Cotton I've played and it's one of the most fun shmups. I'M definitely picking this up.
Thanks! And I really do hope you enjoy it as much as many of us did.
Any word on a Steam/PC version?
No not yet. It takes a while. Reboot did get a Steam port so hopefully this will too.
This game seem to be gorgeous ! Love his presentation ! All this colors on screen, the animation so fluid etc ! Good review ! Thank for that. I'm happy to learn it have a hard difficulty ! Hope you the best.
Character variety and OST are outstanding. I would pick this up just for the music alone. Thanks for covering just about every aspect of this game.
You're welcome! And hope you got and are enjoying the copy of Andro Dunos 2 you won by now.
@@ShmupJunkie Enjoying AD2 a ton, thanks. I think they did an amazing job with the game. That second stage music really gets me energized lol!
Thanks! Really glad the hard work and time put into each video shows. I'm stoked to be getting new Cotton games too. Just added you to the giveaway.
Can't wait to get my collector's edition! I MUST HAVE EVERY GOD DAMN CUP!!
I was interested in the Cotton series after your last video, but I'm totally sold now!
this is easily the best new shmup released in the past year or so, in my opinion. So much fun and love went into it. Great to see this review back up and revamped, you do the game justice!
A lot of folks feel that way and was such a pleasant surprise to see. Definitely a big contender for best new shmup over the last year.
Where do you Stand on the Guardian force collection? Some people were saying had too much lag
Thank you! And you're IN for the giveaway.
I've missed this video. I was looking for it recently and I'm so happy to see it back. Great work as always! #CottonFantasy
Glad to have it back up in all it's glory, updated for the western release. I had a few people ask about it. You're now added for the giveaway
Hope you got it by now since I am replying so late! And enjoying them. Just added you for the prize.
Any difference between this and the ININ release on Amazon? Looks like just the limited edition packaging and cover art?
Game itself is the same yes, just the difference in extras and what you get. Bare bones vs additional items. But the game is the same.
Another incredible in depth review from my favorite shmup channel.
#COTTONFANTASY.
Absolutely loved Reboot and I know I will love this one too!
Yep, if you loved Reboot I'm sure this will be no different. Thank you for watching it again and you're IN for the giveaway.
Awesome Cute'em Up 👍👍👍👍👍
Comical for the animation and entertaining for the gameplay
Definitely want to pick this up!
You're welcome! And just added you for the giveaway.
In regards to the bullet spreads being a bit sparse for Psyva Ria to build up a buzz combo, you can buzz enemies as well to keep your combo going
Love the channel, and congrats on 20k!!
Thanks! I’m very stoked that a shmup channel has been able to grow this way and I’m excited for how far we can take it.
Would love to play this one. On Andro Dunos II and Deathsmiles I•II now. Having a blast 😁
Man, these Cotton compilations are confusing. There's too many of 'em 🤣. Great content as always 👍
It's nice to see that they added extra attack patterns in higher difficulties instead of just tuning up the numbers
Yep, these devs knew how to make a good shmup. No surprise given the one ex Treasure programmer on staff. They upped it all the right way.
Thank you!
This game is not censored in any of the versions, you're good to go.
Good to see you back! I hope lady luck is on my side on this one, I'm going through some stuff!
#COTTONFANTASY
In any case, thanks for the review, as always!
You're welcome. And you're IN for the giveaway so good luck!
Will be getting this on steam when it lands there.Looking forward to it, especially as it has got 2 positive reviews from you.I love Psyvariar ans can't wait to try that character.
Let's hope it gets a Steam port sooner than Reboot did and is well done.

This seems like a modern, colorful shmup that won't make my eyes bleed. And who can hate Cotton? Thanks for the amazing video again dude. #COTTONFANTASY
Definitely less seizure inducing visuals than Reboot that came before. And thank you. Just added you for the giveaway.
Keep the reviews coming!
Love seeing these franchises get revived. I wish more would come back. #COTTONFANTASY
So say we all, I'm thrilled we are getting so many between this, Andro Dunos sequel and more to come. You're IN for the giveaway.
Do you recommend ps4 or switch version? I usually get the switch version cuz of portability but you mentioned the awesome graphics.
Finally playable without importing - still one of the best JP E-shop purchases I've ever mad.
Is there a PC release planned?
We don't know yet, but since Reboot did get a Steam release it's possible this will eventually too.
As always, you know your stuff and have great presentation. I'm looking forward to picking up #CottonFantasy even more now!
Thanks! And you're in for the giveaway.
Happy that we're getting a new #CottonFantasy game after some of the misses we had last year with the updated ports. Hopefully, this will pave the way for newer games of older classics.
Yeah the Tribute release was unfortunate, but this definitely made up for it. And you're in for the prize.
Another long in depth video without any dull parts. Thanks again for another shmup treat!
Love the cotton series for it's hyper silly style. A gem in the world of shmups. #cottonfantasy
You're welcome. If this game does well enough, who knows, maybe we'll even see another one day. And just added you for the giveaway.
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks! And really... There can never be enough Cotton in my opinion.
Can you play with silk in the us versión? Just got It today AND i read theres 8 characters, but I only unlocked the final boss.
You're welcome! And yes, you never know. You're IN for the giveaway.
I can’t wait to play #CottonFantasy and Pocky and Rocky: Reshrined. Thank you for the review.
Both super fantastic games, you'll enjoy both. You're welcome and you're in for the prize.
@@ShmupJunkie Unfortunately not yet but I will as soon as possible! Thank you dude!
Awesome review! I’ve been loving it!
Glad to hear it! Sorry for the late reply I'm just catching up on comments. I figured it's a game you wouldn't hesitate to pick up.
Been waiting for this release for a loooooooong time! Cant wait!! Another awesome video my friend!!!! #COTTONFANTASY
Finally out west! Thank you and hope you enjoy it. Also just added you to the giveaway.
@@ShmupJunkie no apologies needed my friend. I don't know how you keep up with it all!
I think I have more Cotton reviews than any other game lol, just worked out that way. You're IN for the giveaway
Electric Underground will have no excuse to not review the whole thing this time! ;)
#COTTONFANTASY
Lol, yeah no extra DLC in this one, all the characters are there. Actually I stand corrected, apparently SILK was a special Amazon exclusive feature you can only get that way. Even I haven't seen or used her which is too bad, as I usually like playing with her faster and small character sprite. The stand out feature in this game is the sheer character variety and how different they all play, so it really wouldn't have done the game justice to not go into it a bit. Especially when you have such unique ones like Ria from Psyvariar that introduces bullet grazing. I just added you to the giveaway!
Does anyone know if the PS4 version is 2 player?
Konami or similar releasing another big name would really help of course, but it would have to live up to the hype.
looks really cool. still have panorama cotton for the sega genesis. Bought it when the prices where well...nicer XD.
yeah I'm not planning on a copy of Panorama anytime soon.
Definitely gonna buy the digital along with a few others switch has some bad ass shmups
It's a pity there's no version for PC yet (Reboot! had one).
It took a while so maybe one will come here too
