😂😂😂 Oh man, how perfect was that. Eating peanut butter during the peanut butter jar joke. Did it ruin her appetite? I had so much fun with that little toilet kids bit. Basically came up with a list of as many ways of saying take a dump as possible and then making a script out of it. The game is basic and pedestrian, so I knew the script would have to make it. Though it did make me wonder if I should try playing it while pinching a loaf
Fantastic video, my man! Mark mentioned how aesthetics are important to his content and in shumps in general but I don't think it can be understated how much it helps arcade genres or things that can easily slip out of mind stick out. Cho Aniki is well known thanks to his visual style and commiting so effectively to the bit and the same thing can be said for a lot of these other games even if they only save the weird parts for bosses or a single level. I'm going to get a lot of new favourites from here since it is a bit easier to pick than just having a name especially when you already shared some music.
Especially in actual arcades at the time as it had to have that something special that attracted you to the machine over the others. I think the original RType did this really well both with the cabinet and game. Cho Aniki is just insane and memorable for all the wrong reasons lol, but yet it's remembered. It's too bad the game itself is a bit questionable compared to the earlier games but it's still decent enough to enjoy for the spectacle. But most of these games like Burunyunman and Galshell I had a good time playing and would play again. Once the shock value wears off you're left with the game itself.
You sir, are deserving of some praise. I'm not a Shmup fan. I dabble, but I definitely do not have the patience nor skill necessary to truly enjoy them; still I find myself consuming the vast majority of your content. It's always well researched, fun and engaging. I hope your channel keeps growing and reaches a wider audience, as it is much more deserving than a lot of garbage out there. Ps. Thank you that's awesome to hear. I'm always pushing for variety in the games and how the genre isn't simply about being an expert in them but just having some fun with them in short bursts. The Beginner Shmups video I did was focused on getting feet wet. And of course, not everyone will be into them regardless, but by making the videos fun and showing what's cool about them, it's helping bring in some potentials and more interest. So it's awesome when those with just a passing or little interest in them can still enjoy the content as that's my goal. Spreading awareness while entertaining.

Thanks so much for making this video, having now played Galshell 1&2 I love these games so much. I might never have known they existed if I hadn't seen this. It's amazing to think they are available for free, their quality puts many commercial releases to shame.
I’ve yet to play any of his Yakouga series so I’m going to try those next. I’m a sucker for that creative manga type horror art. I think those are actually for sale so I’ll see how I can get any as I don’t want to pirate his stuff if he’s making money on those.

Beat em up, a fighting game I thought? But not sure. And an RPG or more than one. Crazy how wide spread this series was in Japan. Maybe someday when I learn japanese I will try the RPG... but on second thought maybe best not to.

Indeed. I'll always prefer the PC Engine games they were both pretty solid and super creative, but nothing compares to this sequel for straight up wtf. I don't love playing it all that much so now if I feel like I'm missing it's absurdity I can just watch this video instead.
Ah, yeah, the weird-ass aspect of shmups is definitely appreciated over here. The story-light aspect of shmups work well for completely insane devs, and this is a fine, fine collection =) Thanks for the continued effort.
What’s funny is some of these shmups have a lot of lore and background. Cho Aniki has a series of various games, but the most surprising is the lore I learned this week on that last Hentai shmup techno breaker. It was completely serious and hilarious 😂 I almost included it in the video but then thought better of it.

Great video mate and I know SHOOT 1 UP 😂, I brought it on release and it’s a good simple shooter, especially for novices. I knew some of the later ones too but not any of the primary games featured. Loved the Comedy skits too but especially those totally obscure games. I really want the first one with the super cat 🐈 😂 and love the look of the free game so will definitely download it for sure. Hey buddy, glad to see you here. I''ll bet this one did a decent job of keeping you awake and entertained haha. That first game is still out there for PSP but it's not common or easy to find I think. At a minimum the rom is easy enough to get and load up on a psp. The free game Galshell seems really hard when you start it out almost unfair. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to show on limited time, but once you get how it wants you to play it's manageable. Endless continues make it easy to practice and it has lots of checkpoints. So I got through it in a few hours the first time.
I don't know how it took me this long to finally see you on youtube but you are definitely something else. LOL. I love the videos and love Shmup's. I like the PS2 Choaniki. It probably plays the worst, but its opening video is amazing, and the fact that you have to essentially give an analog stick a handy as a gameplay mechanic (with the furious white eruption that trickles off after) is unforgettable.

I'm subscribed to the channel and your video was near the middle of my home page, after a couple of recommendations from topics and channels that I don't give a dead rat's tail about. I'll play this on my Switch, phone and trusty old laptop, then I'll replay them again to screw YT's unfair algorithm.
Thanks and yeah, I really wanted to run the experiment for that reason. Usually initial engagement drives how much the algo pushes it out after the first couple hours. So if I see tons of my subs watching it more than usual the first hours, and then it just drops off like crazy, I know it's YT doing it's thing. It's their platform so have to play their game, but I am hoping it doesn't effect it. As I'd like to do more like this in the future without knowing it'll tank reach. Very interested to see what happens.

I don't know why, but I think someone should make a mod where all the characters heads are replaced with Vladimir Putin's.

Scrolled a ways down and didn’t see anyone mention it. In terms of the Tanuki’s balls, they’ve been depicted as having large testicles as a sign of good fortune for quite a while. It has something to do with metal workers wrapping gold with that skin as a part of their process for working with gold. Apparently they needed to safely hammer it out as thin as possible, and wrapping it in Tanuki balls helped with that. tl;dr the balls are filled with gold so the bigger the better

I think you might like Galshell 2 man try it out one day. It's super weird at first and you want to hate it, as it seems impossible to dodge anything, but the mechanics just take getting used to. I was able to plow through the whole game in a few hours or less once I got the hang of it. And the visuals never cease to amaze or show something new with every stage.
@@ShmupJunkie I quite like the visuals, it reminds me of japanese horror manga like Uzumaki or Wicked City. The fact that everything is organic is very cool too, I imagine the kind of twisted minds that took the decision to create something like that.

Cho Aniki I think I've got on my PC somewhere but haven't gotten around to playing it yet, it's on my bucket list of shmups to eventually check out. Galshell 2 I've tried to play but I just can't get it to run properly on my Windows 10 PC. You briefly mentioned Yakouga by that same dev and I'll endorse the 4th one in the series 100%. Yakouga 4 is filled with crazy japanese tentacle porn, etc but the game is a blast to play. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique bullet hell with crazy stages and bosses. I've got hours of recorded footage I was going to use to make a TH-cam review on it but it got put on hold when I got a new job. I'll probably get around to it eventually, unless you beat me to it. It's a somewhat difficult game to find but if you do give it a shot.
Thanks for that recommendation, I will definitely try Yakouga 4 now as I love his art style. I have not played that yet. I really enjoyed Galshell so it's up my alley. Don't expect a ton of great gameplay from Cho Aniki on Saturn just really ridiculous stuff. The ones on PCE are honestly cool and creative too, just not as disturbing. I love making weird ass videos so I hope this one does well so I can make more.
@@ShmupJunkie It's mindblowing how good of a game Yakouga 4 turned out to be given that it's made by, I think, just one guy. I was working on making a TH-cam video about adult themed games and that came up on my list, when I started playing it though I liked it so much it ended up being all I played for hours and hours. I also came damn close to a 1 CC run on it- I lost my final life on the very last boss. Hopefully you can find the game, it's not that easy to track down from what I remember though you can always message me if you can't find it and I'll do what I can help you out. I didn't realize Cho Aniki was on Saturn, I thought it was a Playstation game. As it so happens I just bought a Japanese Sega Saturn basically to play all the shmups on it... first time I've ever had one and I just installed a MODE to replace the disc drive and run games from an SD card. I'll check to see if I've got that game on my card. I can't play it yet I'm still waiting for the RGB hookups for my TV and the wait is killing me lol.

So they were a good candidate. I think I would do a different video for games with cool and unusual mechanics. Call them unique shmups that break the rules or something like that. Versus just weird. Which is a good idea for another video Id totally do that.
Cool recommendations lol Out of those, I've played Burunyanman and Cho Aniki. Cho Aniki is way too tough for me, Burunyanman is more casual friendly. And by the way, the PC version of Burunyanman takes what is probably a 17+ game on the PSP and turns it into a full blown hentai. Not only are the victory screens more revealing, there's an exclusive male character, who has the absolute worst damage and shooting pattern by far, but he, let's say, "adds" a bit of extra content. It was done by an eroge developer, and it's kind of an oddball in the company's usually VN-centric catalog.
I always feel like media that takes cues from Giger's work always kind of misses the point, they include the bio bit but nearly always skip over the mechanical aspect, also the flesh always looks too alive, which is why I always liked Gynoug aka Wings of Wor, that game seemed to get the balance just right. Having said that I really need to try Galshell, that game looks nuts.

I've always loved Burunyanman on PSP. The author has been trying to publish the game on Steam for years by now, but something isn't going well I guess.
You can't really, I haven't seen it around. Well you can, but only through a site that may be hosting it. I don't have any links but I know some people managed to search it up and find it. It's not for sale in any legit way I know of.

I've still not played the waifu game but I have seen some footage. This one is pretty bad if you play the PC version it's not toned down like on PSP. If you are too curious make sure the wife knows your intention lol. Have you never played any of the Cho Aniki games? The ones on PCEngine are definitely the way to go. The one here on Saturn/PS1 is ridiculous, but not nearly as fun as those.
I think it's probably what most think of when weird games come to mind and as the best example. Yet I think some others presented here may have given it a run for it's money, especially the oddball indie stuff toward the end. The farting object really threw me for a loop when I saw it lol.

Until now, I've been inside King Unpi's tummy" If you noticed, while you were fighting the final boss, the ground said "Unpi", but changed to "Pantsu" after you beat him. From context, I'm guessing Pantsu is the underpants god you rescue by beating the game.
Either that or by "in his tummy" it meant he was stuck in there along with all the other turds and I helped shit him out and rescue him lol. The game is definitely more fun to raz than to play.
Lol, and it's not that unusual a game if it weren't for all the flying turds and weird enemies. But back thenit made us all do a double take. Discovering it for the first time as a rental and not knowing what to expect aside from what was on the hucard case. Not like they had it in EGM lol
Kinda easy to miss just how F-ed up R-Type can be at times. And Hellsinker is it's own brand of bizarre. And man, I fell in love with Akira-Goya's artstyle. I tend to really like the mixture of the cute and the grotesque. (referring to some of the rest of his art)
That's a good way to put it. Some of his other Yakouga art had some of that, like it's cartoony in ways, but also gory and weird. Hard to describe but always creative and you want to see what's next. That kept me going in Galshell as well.
A good and hidden gem weird'em up is "Zunzunkyou no yabou" of arcades. It was maded by Sega and never received a port. For now it's only playable on MAME.
I just checked it out thx for that. Not sure I'd ever seen it before and looks like a cool arena style shooter. MAME is always such a pain to set up too. That's a pretty good arcade exclusive I'm going to keep in mind for an upcoming video I want to do on them.
Yeah Parodius is like rated G... but not in terms of gameplay at least. It'll give any of these games a run for their money and then some in difficulty and rank haha. Pretty on the outside but a beast once you get to know it.

You and me both. I thought I'd seen the worst of it but research this week proved me wrong. As usual the indie community comes to the rescue. Knowing they don't have to worry about selling the product they can go full weird and no censorship. I considered un-censoring this video completely but I thought a lot of what I did actually added to the humor, so I left it alone. Even with the bits covered some of it is plenty bad.

Hey, that was very weird indeed. I knew Cho Aniki, but pretty much discovered everything else. And I didn't expect Thunder Force VI to make it into the list, but it's true that the final boss feels out of place. Too much influence from games like Contra I think. And of course, Gynoug!
I keep telling folks it’s a bit odd what Gynoug got away with for its time. It’s got some eyebrow raising designs that was not common on home consoles then. Plenty of games had some phallic imagery but most got cut coming to the west. That boss I showed is sporting a pretty obvious alien dildo lol.
Funny thing is that the weird Shoot'em ups was what got me into the Parodius series when I saw the Japanese Import of that series on the PSP, since I had a PSP since the mid 2000s I got myself a fair few Japanese Imports thanks to the thing being multi region. So getting Parodius for that was a god send since I never had the older systems that the series was on earlier in my gaming life. Later on I also got the Galgun series and the first game I got of that was the Japanese Import of the PS3 version. Thankfully got Galgun Double Peace when it was released in the West knowing what to expect and could finally read the stuff that would have been hard to understand without trying things out and see reactions from characters. You need to be a certain man of culture to really appreciate these types of games.
One game you definitely couldn't show at all on here, and possibly never even heard of, is Space Phallus. Sure it has super pixelated Atari graphics, but even that's not enough to save it

When I fired up the PC Engine Mini, I saw Cho Aniki and thought to myself, “Oh the joy this will bring to my beating heart.”. Shortly thereafter it dawned on me that I was thinking of the Saturn/PS1 version. 😁. Also ran, Hong Kong ‘97 could really use a Switch port.
Only the pc engine versions are both better games lol at least as actual games. The Saturn port is just creepy af lol. And please no, no ports of HK97 anywhere. Ever 🤣

Pretty rare to hear something good about Zombie Nation on youtube. Japanese version is my favorite shooter on Famicom - graphics, which make your console HOT and blowing music and sound effects
It really is a cool game, quirky yet just really great. That's one of those NES grails for me, where I'd love to own the original but it's just crazy money. You're right on... it's very underrated. That US cover art is something else too lol
So happy to see Yokuga here... I found myself completely subjugated by that series.... ... And i really want to find Yokuga 6 on PC which seems as insane as Galshell 2 in body horror.... And that music is so good.... But I never could ! Well i "could" command it to Japan but i don't really want to have it physical for... personal reason. One of the few case i prefer having the game on a digital - only format....
I want to play Burunyanman and Galshell 2 but I am not sure how. I looked up to see if I could... ahem, sail the high seas for Burunyanman but obscure games like those aren't easy to find. That game in particular is not even on Steam yet and the PSP version seems to be censored, ugh. Any links or advice are appreciated.

I was just about to answer you on this, yes the free wiki has it all. I'm glad you found it. Burunyunman is quite difficult to get yes. The rom is easy of course for PSP, google will find it for emulation. But the PC version I am not sure where either aside from torrent sites where it still may be out there. Somewhere on the darkweb haha
Not sure what it is about aging but its only in my 30s that I started really, really loving this genre of games and holy hell the emulation possibilities are endless. That's some serious praise for a console with so many good shooters on there. It's definitely in my Top 10 as well along with Gaiares and Eliminate Down. Very underrated compared to the others.
@@ShmupJunkie I absolutely adore Gynoug. and that with Owning all 3 TF games, Gaiares, Aero Blasters, Zero Wing, Darius 2, Bio Mutant, Battle Mania and so on. While I don't own Eliminate Down (game is stupid expensive), what I played of it won't change my mind. Gynoug ozzes personality, is highly original, has incredible level and monsters design and is super addictive.

Basically came up with a list of as many ways of saying take a dump as possible and then making a script out of it. The game is basic and pedestrian, so I knew the script would have to make it. Though it did make me wonder if I should try playing it while pinching a loaf
Fantastic video, my man! Mark mentioned how aesthetics are important to his content and in shumps in general but I don't think it can be understated how much it helps arcade genres or things that can easily slip out of mind stick out.
Cho Aniki is well known thanks to his visual style and commiting so effectively to the bit and the same thing can be said for a lot of these other games even if they only save the weird parts for bosses or a single level.
I'm going to get a lot of new favourites from here since it is a bit easier to pick than just having a name especially when you already shared some music.
Especially in actual arcades at the time as it had to have that something special that attracted you to the machine over the others. I think the original RType did this really well both with the cabinet and game. Cho Aniki is just insane and memorable for all the wrong reasons lol, but yet it's remembered. It's too bad the game itself is a bit questionable compared to the earlier games but it's still decent enough to enjoy for the spectacle. But most of these games like Burunyunman and Galshell I had a good time playing and would play again. Once the shock value wears off you're left with the game itself.
You sir, are deserving of some praise. I'm not a Shmup fan. I dabble, but I definitely do not have the patience nor skill necessary to truly enjoy them; still I find myself consuming the vast majority of your content. It's always well researched, fun and engaging. I hope your channel keeps growing and reaches a wider audience, as it is much more deserving than a lot of garbage out there. Ps. Thank you that's awesome to hear. I'm always pushing for variety in the games and how the genre isn't simply about being an expert in them but just having some fun with them in short bursts. The Beginner Shmups video I did was focused on getting feet wet. And of course, not everyone will be into them regardless, but by making the videos fun and showing what's cool about them, it's helping bring in some potentials and more interest. So it's awesome when those with just a passing or little interest in them can still enjoy the content as that's my goal. Spreading awareness while entertaining.

Galshell 2 looked absolutely rad as hell. Definitely helped to bring Steel Vampire back to my attention, too.
It is and although SV is clearly more polished and complete I can’t help but love the unique Galshell visuals that much more.

Indeed. I'll always prefer the PC Engine games they were both pretty solid and super creative, but nothing compares to this sequel for straight up wtf. I don't love playing it all that much so now if I feel like I'm missing it's absurdity I can just watch this video instead.
Ah, yeah, the weird-ass aspect of shmups is definitely appreciated over here. The story-light aspect of shmups work well for completely insane devs, and this is a fine, fine collection =) Thanks for the continued effort.
What’s funny is some of these shmups have a lot of lore and background. Cho Aniki has a series of various games, but the most surprising is the lore I learned this week on that last Hentai shmup techno breaker. It was completely serious and hilarious 😂 I almost included it in the video but then thought better of it.

Great video mate and I know SHOOT 1 UP 😂, I brought it on release and it’s a good simple shooter, especially for novices. I knew some of the later ones too but not any of the primary games featured. Loved the Comedy skits too but especially those totally obscure games. I really want the first one with the super cat 🐈 😂 and love the look of the free game so will definitely download it for sure. Hey buddy, glad to see you here. I''ll bet this one did a decent job of keeping you awake and entertained haha. That first game is still out there for PSP but it's not common or easy to find I think. At a minimum the rom is easy enough to get and load up on a psp. The free game Galshell seems really hard when you start it out almost unfair. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to show on limited time, but once you get how it wants you to play it's manageable. Endless continues make it easy to practice and it has lots of checkpoints. So I got through it in a few hours the first time.
Those games could be classifieds in a new genre: "weird'em ups"

I like the PS2 Choaniki. It probably plays the worst, but its opening video is amazing, and the fact that you have to essentially give an analog stick a handy as a gameplay mechanic (with the furious white eruption that trickles off after) is unforgettable.

Thanks and yeah, I really wanted to run the experiment for that reason. Usually initial engagement drives how much the algo pushes it out after the first couple hours. So if I see tons of my subs watching it more than usual the first hours, and then it just drops off like crazy, I know it's YT doing it's thing. It's their platform so have to play their game, but I am hoping it doesn't effect it. As I'd like to do more like this in the future without knowing it'll tank reach. Very interested to see what happens.

Scrolled a ways down and didn’t see anyone mention it. In terms of the Tanuki’s balls, they’ve been depicted as having large testicles as a sign of good fortune for quite a while. It has something to do with metal workers wrapping gold with that skin as a part of their process for working with gold. Apparently they needed to safely hammer it out as thin as possible, and wrapping it in Tanuki balls helped with that.
tl;dr the balls are filled with gold so the bigger the better

I think you might like Galshell 2 man try it out one day. It's super weird at first and you want to hate it, as it seems impossible to dodge anything, but the mechanics just take getting used to. I was able to plow through the whole game in a few hours or less once I got the hang of it. And the visuals never cease to amaze or show something new with every stage.
@@ShmupJunkie I quite like the visuals, it reminds me of japanese horror manga like Uzumaki or Wicked City. The fact that everything is organic is very cool too, I imagine the kind of twisted minds that took the decision to create something like that.

Soreyuke Borunyunman looks awesome. Cho Aniki I think I've got on my PC somewhere but haven't gotten around to playing it yet, it's on my bucket list of shmups to eventually check out.
Galshell 2 I've tried to play but I just can't get it to run properly on my Windows 10 PC. You briefly mentioned Yakouga by that same dev and I'll endorse the 4th one in the series 100%. Yakouga 4 is filled with crazy japanese tentacle porn, etc but the game is a blast to play. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique bullet hell with crazy stages and bosses. I've got hours of recorded footage I was going to use to make a TH-cam review on it but it got put on hold when I got a new job. I'll probably get around to it eventually, unless you beat me to it. It's a somewhat difficult game to find but if you do give it a shot.
Thanks for that recommendation, I will definitely try Yakouga 4 now as I love his art style. I have not played that yet. I really enjoyed Galshell so it's up my alley. Don't expect a ton of great gameplay from Cho Aniki on Saturn just really ridiculous stuff. The ones on PCE are honestly cool and creative too, just not as disturbing. I love making weird ass videos so I hope this one does well so I can make more.
@@ShmupJunkie It's mindblowing how good of a game Yakouga 4 turned out to be given that it's made by, I think, just one guy. I was working on making a TH-cam video about adult themed games and that came up on my list, when I started playing it though I liked it so much it ended up being all I played for hours and hours. I also came damn close to a 1 CC run on it- I lost my final life on the very last boss. Hopefully you can find the game, it's not that easy to track down from what I remember though you can always message me if you can't find it and I'll do what I can help you out.
I didn't realize Cho Aniki was on Saturn, I thought it was a Playstation game. As it so happens I just bought a Japanese Sega Saturn basically to play all the shmups on it... first time I've ever had one and I just installed a MODE to replace the disc drive and run games from an SD card. I'll check to see if I've got that game on my card.
I can't play it yet I'm still waiting for the RGB hookups for my TV and the wait is killing me lol.

So they were a good candidate. I think I would do a different video for games with cool and unusual mechanics. Call them unique shmups that break the rules or something like that. Versus just weird. Which is a good idea for another video Id totally do that.

Out of those, I've played Burunyanman and Cho Aniki. Cho Aniki is way too tough for me, Burunyanman is more casual friendly.
And by the way, the PC version of Burunyanman takes what is probably a 17+ game on the PSP and turns it into a full blown hentai. Not only are the victory screens more revealing, there's an exclusive male character, who has the absolute worst damage and shooting pattern by far, but he, let's say, "adds" a bit of extra content.
It was done by an eroge developer, and it's kind of an oddball in the company's usually VN-centric catalog.

Oh I'm sure, and I thought the end result was pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to that next game he is working on.
Along with a lot of other games in the genre following R- Type: X-Multiply, Abadox, the final boss from Curse, etc.
I always feel like media that takes cues from Giger's work always kind of misses the point, they include the bio bit but nearly always skip over the mechanical aspect, also the flesh always looks too alive, which is why I always liked Gynoug aka Wings of Wor, that game seemed to get the balance just right.
Having said that I really need to try Galshell, that game looks nuts.

I've always loved Burunyanman on PSP. The author has been trying to publish the game on Steam for years by now, but something isn't going well I guess.

Cho Aniki I still remember when it was released on the PC-Engine in Japan and they were showing a demo in the Game Store... I think I mouthed WTF when I first saw it but the game play is awesome if you can look passed the obvious homoerotic stuff... I was looking at buying GoGo Burunyanman, do you know if they sell it on the steam store?
It was accepted through the greenlight system, but it seems it never actually got released.

Lol, don't get your hopes up too much on Toilet Kids. It's funny for a while but the gameplay is very average. Wings of Wor is awesome it was one of my Genesis favs too.

I've still not played the waifu game but I have seen some footage. This one is pretty bad if you play the PC version it's not toned down like on PSP. If you are too curious make sure the wife knows your intention lol. Have you never played any of the Cho Aniki games? The ones on PCEngine are definitely the way to go. The one here on Saturn/PS1 is ridiculous, but not nearly as fun as those.

As soon as I saw the title of this video the game that immediately sprang to mind was Cho Aniki. That game is absolutely bat shit crazy.
I think it's probably what most think of when weird games come to mind and as the best example. Yet I think some others presented here may have given it a run for it's money, especially the oddball indie stuff toward the end. The farting object really threw me for a loop when I saw it lol.

If you noticed, while you were fighting the final boss, the ground said "Unpi", but changed to "Pantsu" after you beat him. From context, I'm guessing Pantsu is the underpants god you rescue by beating the game.
Either that or by "in his tummy" it meant he was stuck in there along with all the other turds and I helped shit him out and rescue him lol. The game is definitely more fun to raz than to play.

Lol, and it's not that unusual a game if it weren't for all the flying turds and weird enemies. But back thenit made us all do a double take. Discovering it for the first time as a rental and not knowing what to expect aside from what was on the hucard case. Not like they had it in EGM lol
Kinda easy to miss just how F-ed up R-Type can be at times.
And Hellsinker is it's own brand of bizarre.
And man, I fell in love with Akira-Goya's artstyle. I tend to really like the mixture of the cute and the grotesque. (referring to some of the rest of his art)
That's a good way to put it. Some of his other Yakouga art had some of that, like it's cartoony in ways, but also gory and weird. Hard to describe but always creative and you want to see what's next. That kept me going in Galshell as well.

A good and hidden gem weird'em up is "Zunzunkyou no yabou" of arcades. It was maded by Sega and never received a port. For now it's only playable on MAME.
I just checked it out thx for that. Not sure I'd ever seen it before and looks like a cool arena style shooter. MAME is always such a pain to set up too. That's a pretty good arcade exclusive I'm going to keep in mind for an upcoming video I want to do on them.

Yeah Parodius is like rated G... but not in terms of gameplay at least. It'll give any of these games a run for their money and then some in difficulty and rank haha. Pretty on the outside but a beast once you get to know it.

You and me both. I thought I'd seen the worst of it but research this week proved me wrong. As usual the indie community comes to the rescue. Knowing they don't have to worry about selling the product they can go full weird and no censorship. I considered un-censoring this video completely but I thought a lot of what I did actually added to the humor, so I left it alone. Even with the bits covered some of it is plenty bad.

Hey, that was very weird indeed. I knew Cho Aniki, but pretty much discovered everything else. And I didn't expect Thunder Force VI to make it into the list, but it's true that the final boss feels out of place. Too much influence from games like Contra I think.
And of course, Gynoug!
I keep telling folks it’s a bit odd what Gynoug got away with for its time. It’s got some eyebrow raising designs that was not common on home consoles then. Plenty of games had some phallic imagery but most got cut coming to the west. That boss I showed is sporting a pretty obvious alien dildo lol.

Funny thing is that the weird Shoot'em ups was what got me into the Parodius series when I saw the Japanese Import of that series on the PSP, since I had a PSP since the mid 2000s I got myself a fair few Japanese Imports thanks to the thing being multi region.
So getting Parodius for that was a god send since I never had the older systems that the series was on earlier in my gaming life.
Later on I also got the Galgun series and the first game I got of that was the Japanese Import of the PS3 version.
Thankfully got Galgun Double Peace when it was released in the West knowing what to expect and could finally read the stuff that would have been hard to understand without trying things out and see reactions from characters.
You need to be a certain man of culture to really appreciate these types of games.

When I fired up the PC Engine Mini, I saw Cho Aniki and thought to myself, “Oh the joy this will bring to my beating heart.”. Shortly thereafter it dawned on me that I was thinking of the Saturn/PS1 version. 😁. Also ran, Hong Kong ‘97 could really use a Switch port.
Only the pc engine versions are both better games lol at least as actual games. The Saturn port is just creepy af lol. And please no, no ports of HK97 anywhere. Ever 🤣

Honorable mention for Otomedius. This game was a chalenger for the department of Age Rating in Brazil.
Pretty rare to hear something good about Zombie Nation on youtube. Japanese version is my favorite shooter on Famicom - graphics, which make your console HOT and blowing music and sound effects
It really is a cool game, quirky yet just really great. That's one of those NES grails for me, where I'd love to own the original but it's just crazy money. You're right on... it's very underrated. That US cover art is something else too lol

I want to play Burunyanman and Galshell 2 but I am not sure how. I looked up to see if I could... ahem, sail the high seas for Burunyanman but obscure games like those aren't easy to find. I was just about to answer you on this, yes the free wiki has it all. I'm glad you found it. Burunyunman is quite difficult to get yes. The rom is easy of course for PSP, google will find it for emulation. But the PC version I am not sure where either aside from torrent sites where it still may be out there. Gynoug (Wings of Wor) is an incredible game and, imho, the third best horizontal shmup on the Megadrive (After TF3 and 4)
That's some serious praise for a console with so many good shooters on there. It's definitely in my Top 10 as well along with Gaiares and Eliminate Down. Very underrated compared to the others.
@@ShmupJunkie I absolutely adore Gynoug. and that with Owning all 3 TF games, Gaiares, Aero Blasters, Zero Wing, Darius 2, Bio Mutant, Battle Mania and so on. While I don't own Eliminate Down (game is stupid expensive), what I played of it won't change my mind. Gynoug ozzes personality, is highly original, has incredible level and monsters design and is super addictive.
