    Hello, I’ve never owned a cover stitch machine in all my many years of sewing. But when needing to take up hem on my granddaughter’s formal dress and it was made with Lycra, I struggled to replicate the stitch. This was when I decided to purchase one, (4 more girls to go).
    Your very welcome explained instructions made me decide to get the binding attachment too.
    Thank You so very much 😊

    If I am using a light weight knit or a slinky knit, I always interface the strip of binding with a very light weight knit fusible interfacing before putting it through the binder. You can also use spray starch, but the interfacing has worked better for me. It makes all the difference in the world. Your video is fantastic. Thank you.

    This is a great video. I've had a Brother 2340 Coverstitch for a few years and never used it much. I recently purchased a generic binder attachment from Amazon and have been trying to decide whether or not to keep it. It looks identical to the one in your video except the rake is upside down! I'll have to see if I can turn it over. I will also have to attach with tape since the Brother doesn't have screw holes -- only a slot. Your video gave me enough info so I can go try it and have a better chance of success. Thanks!

Very important to me to be able to create more stretch in the binding as I sew a lot with knits.

    Is it much different sewing a curved neckline as opposed to a straight piece of fabric as you have just demonstrated and what would your machine settings be eg needle tensions and differential? Also would the fabric type eg using thin Lycra change any settings? Last time I tried to bind Lycra the results were not very good as the fabric slid off to the side. Thanks for any advice as I am still new to all this.

    • @rebeccassewingcorner49
      @rebeccassewingcorner49  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is not really much to do for a curved neckline. Keep "guide" in mind. You will slowly "straighten" the neckline while you feed it into the binder. But not stretch it.
      As for Lycra (as in bathing suit stuff) it is not my friend. I will be back to sewing suits soon and will try it (again). I have a few new ideas. If it works I will share!
      Thanks for watching!

      It came with the (in my humble opinion) useless so called hem guide that the manufacturer sells. You should be able to cut up a simple plastic placemat and pop two holes in it and get same results. Possibly the right size to protect all spots around your guide.

  • @purplebouquetnn2956

    Great tutorial. Thank you. Do you have any advice on why I can't get my single-fold knit binding to work? The stitch just won't enclose the raw edge. It works beautifully with woven fabric, but the knit, even a stable knit similar to the heart fabric you show, fails me. The raw edge lands left of the left needle. Even fusing interfacing to the knit makes no difference. I've set up my machine exactly as you described, with the upper bumper 2-3 mm left of the lower bumper, and the lower bumper lined up with the left needle. The settings work great with woven fabric, with the coverstitch nicely straddling the raw edge, but not at all with the knit. Thanks for any advice.

    • @purplebouquetnn2956
      @purplebouquetnn2956 ปีที่แล้ว

      I worked it out. Tip to share with others who may be struggling with the settings: use a long strip of fabric to test, 24-30 inches, rather than short ones. Insert, sew a couple of inches, observe the results without removing the fabric. Adjust the settings one at a time in small increments, sew a couple of inches, observe the results and keep repeating and adjusting until everything aligns just right.

    • @rebeccassewingcorner49
      @rebeccassewingcorner49  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Needles should be in the position that makes the most use of the feed dogs. I find that the euphoria is very forgiving...or does not care that much. I suggest trying things out over listening to rules. Often information from dealers can also be second hand information without really knowing or having tried...

    • @rebeccassewingcorner49
      @rebeccassewingcorner49  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been thinking about how to answer for a bit. I see that there are machines that tend to pull in a direction. My theory is that this is because the feed dogs are not working just right together. I have noticed that when I "crank" my differential way down and am not just making straps it ill pull hard (on the left) on my project fabric...it moves much faster then the binding.
      So I don't have an answer for you - try adjusting the differential up or down and see if it helps.
      Worst case you can use the "lego hack" and put a barrier to prevent the shift to the right...

      The binder in general does not like bulk. I try to avoid it any way possible. When I do have it I use my beloved hammer and give everything a solid whack or two to reduce. Also I glue things together in advance to keep them in place while going thru the binder. So glue - whack and guide.

      @@rebeccassewingcorner49 do they have an online store I have been trying to find it for some time now at a reasonable price.

      no they do not have an online store. it is the babylock brand binder - it has a pretty fixed price with dealers. Additionally I am located in Germany - it might not be much of a help anyway.

    Can you try a video on the single fold one. I can not get to work with my knit.

      I actually do not own a single fold binder as I prefer to use the paper hack on my double fold. Maybe my paper hack video can help you. It could also be the fabric, some just do not work well.

      Me too! I try swimsuit fabric every year when making the new bathing suits. I have yet to find the right solution that gives me the results I want. It is about time to make new ones so I will pay attention if it does work out.

      I of course "approve" this comment. It however has nothing to do with the question. It addresses woven fabrics and that only very high level.

      @@rebeccassewingcorner49 I think the tip from Luo Fu is not the fabric itself, but that they're using a starch to make the lycra a little more grippy so the lycra doesn't get wonky when it goes through. That's what I hear can make lycra binding projects a bit more successful! I'm also looking for a method to make lycra projects work. I'm going to try it out.

    • @rebeccassewingcorner49

      possibly - I have tried starch with not enough success. Thus I have not continued with it. Starch might not be starch...

      I am not 100% sure what you are referring,? If you mean a special plate to compensate for missing hometown attach a binder I believe it is simply called binder adaptor.
