HB got significantly slower laterally on defense last year and became a below average defender. Replacing him with Demar will not hurt the Kings defensively apart from in matchups where size matters. HB was a very consistent 3 point shooter though so Keegan, Ellis, Monk, and Huerter have to pick up the slack on that end. Especially Keegan because his corner 3's were abysmal last year.
@nenola504 Fox can't shoot 3s consistently? Pretty solid average on plenty of attempts. Also, Monk, Huerter, Murray, Ellis and Lyles can knock down catch and shoot 3s all day.
@westbrick4208 not so sure about that. We all know if anyone goes to okc or Minnesota now, it'll be universally praised. It really is just sac mainstream sports media hates.
Really glad you made this video bc I’ve been thinking to myself that people have been more down on this trade than they should be/simplifying it to “can he shoot 3’s though?” and Demar is more than that
Demar isnt automatic but he can hit 3s in big moments. He shot 41% from the left corner and has hit multiple 3 so many times in close 4th quarters. I know the bulls arent good but they consistently got to play ins with even less shooter than sacramento
Considering there are very few guards that can guard Fox one on one even having a defender that needs to stick with DeRozan is going to be huge .... Also can we also mention that the Kings now have two of the best clutch players in the NBA on their team .... Considering how many games come down to 2 to 6 points that alone will be huge. Also the contract is 3 years 76 million .. though the last year is only 10 million guaranteed .. for a player of his caliber that is great and east to trade the last year. This reminds me of the Sabonis trade were everyone was saying Kings made the worst trade possible. That didn't age well.
Great explanation. Total floor raiser and I think people just forget how good DeMar is, along with the fact that he has never played with a playmaking big as good as Sabonis. The Kings now have someone to go to the post when the game slowdown or when they need a bucket. This is something they done with Barnes but he was able to draw fouls many times only. But they're definitely going to go to DeRozan even more. When the game become tight...this could mean the difference between winning or losing. I couldn't count how many games where the Kings lose because they couldn't get a good winning shot off OR couldn't shift momentum due to the way they had to play fast OR how many possessions were wasted because the players they had on the court just couldn't generate offense EVEN though the game was close for them to close in or take the lead. I am sure DeRozen will help in this regard.
People are so hung up on the 2031 pick swap and are so nervous about something 7 years away from now. The pick and roll or pick and pop alone with DDR and The Ox will dominate next season!
DeRozan doesn't need to be a 3pt shooter, if he can pass the ball there are plenty of 3pt shooters on the floor at any time. Murry, Fox and whoever else is on the floor will be enough to shoot 3s. It helps having half the team attacking the basket and the rest ready to shoot 3s.
Fun fact: DeMar DeRozan has 86 less career points than Steph Curry (same draft class) while having SIGNIFICANTLY less 3pm. Heard Nick say that on his show the other day and it might be the most mind blowing stat I’ve ever heard. Glad to see my favorite player stacks up to some all time greats in that regard.
I've been absolutely baffled by all the negative takes on this trade for the kings. Derozen is the exact type of player they have been missing on offense: a bucket getter who can score at will in iso. People like to point out how long he keeps his dribble but with all the shooting surrounding him in Sacto (I think Fox's 3pt efficiency takes another jump this year) he's going to have a ton of opportunities to make plays alongside Fox and Sabonis. My only concern is how Fox, Monk, and Derozen will share the floor if they decide to start those three. Malik may be stuck in his sixth man role for another season, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
I think a fantastic point you made in this video is how defenders still close in around Deebo when he shoots 3s. Even that little distraction paired with arguably the fastest player in the league (currently) and you have more made possessions than not.
You told me they would respect derozan on the perimeter because he can attack close outs but they don’t gaf abt him out there and the kings worse than my lakers
This is a move where if it works I wouldn’t be surprised, however if it doesn’t work I also wouldn’t be surprised. I could see it going both ways. I’m more inclined towards it working, really curious on how it’ll work.
I think Derozan is very underrated for a long time and I don't get it. I mean how is PG-13 getting 211 million for 4 years and Derozan gets 73 million for 3 and people are doubting his worth. I know they are not directly comparable, but cmon.
I love the DeMar trade. Getting an elite wing scorer and second lead playmaker is huge for what little they gave up. DeRozan has been an underrated facilitator for years now.
Been waiting on your video cause I knew you’d break down exactly why this was a great acquisition some ppl really just don’t know ball and chalk it up to oh “demar doesn’t shoot 3s” “he doesn’t defend” so this does nothing for the kings lol when in reality it does
Another thing DeRozan is good at is getting to the FT line and hitting them. Sabonis and Fox are 70+% FT shooters , so teams don't mind hacking them (plus they get few calls). DeRozen will draw fouls at a higher rate (making it even tougher on opponents to guard Fox and Monk and Sabonis), plus he can make FTs down the stretch with Monk (a 90% FT shooter). Harrison Barnes, on the other hand, did not draw many fouls.
DeRozan gives the Kings 3 playmakers and 2 of which can be on the court all times when they stagger rotations. Fox, Monk and DD. And with the plethora of knock down 3 point catch and shoot players the Kings have in Fox, Monk, Murray, Lyles and Ellis they should be able to space the floor well at all times.

I like the breakdown most people just talk to talk. You actually breakdown your vision. I don’t see how this can be a bad trade for SAC. If anything you are bringing in another 20+ point scorer. Demar gets a bucket regardless its just going to come down to the others like fox and Sabonis hitting their 3’s
This trade was like the trade last year where Washington sent Porzinghis to Boston. There are definitely risks for the player, but for the price (Marcus Smart/Harrison Barnes) why would you not do it?
You're absolutely right in your analysis of DeRozen. However, you say nothing about defence. The Kings score perfectly well; they need SOMEONE who can play defence on a consistent basis. The Kings will go as far as their defence allows. 5 seed is their ceiling in the west, with play-in most likely.
I think the riskier part of the trade is something you didn´t mention. They also sent a 2031 pick swap to the Spurs. Sacramento is a franchise that hasn´t been in contetion for the longest time, so expecting their time getting to the playoffs to last that long is a reach, and that pick swap is unprotected
He'll be fine on offense. Fox and Monk are capable of playing off ball, and DeMar can build chemistry with Sabonis in the PNR. Manage their minutes and you'll have potent scoring all game. The issue is on defense. The kings already have a porous perimeter defense and a big who can't protect the rim in Sabonis. DeRozan makes them even worse.
Na keon stays. I say trade Carter more because Ellis is developed but Carters potential makes him more valuable. But when it comes to Lauri, he is a UFA next season, he says he will test market, so is Jazz gonna stay and pat and try to convince him to stay with an extension or do they sell him for just picks. Since Huerter and Lauri have similar contracts, kings can get him for Huerter and Picks if Ainge worries losing him for nothing. Kings also sneaky got McLaughlin, ive liked him for years and is a sneaky fan duel when Dlo was out.
Fit is the issue. Plus paying $25mil is an overpay. When the Spurs play the Kings then Stephon Castle will smother DeRozan. Spurs will be one of the top D teams this next year b/c ov the VW-Sochan-Barnes-Vassell-CP3 is going to be devasting. 45+ wins and a play-in berth.
Yea, the Kings are trying to get over the hump, get in the playoffs and compete there but got a player that is always on mediocre teams. Even when he had talent in Toronto, he accomplished nothing and disappeared in the playoffs. I'm a believer in chances though so I hope they are successful but his record has been consistent of his teams under performing and him not getting far.
It is a good trade but the Kings did give up something.... Barnes is good. Barnes never misses games. Barnes is a better defender. Barnes is a better defender. Barnes is not as good on offense. Popovich wanted him for a reason. Bulls are just dumping salaries.. and having a tough time of it..
Barnes was weak. Great guy but weak. 16 one night 4 the next then 6...His best night was the first game last season. After that sad. If you are a Kings fan you knew he was getting traded....huerter too🎉 Kings got better 🎉🎉🎉
Mention Kobe One Time and Im Blasting!!!! Im from Portland but I sympathize with Sacramento getting Screwed by David Stern so he could RIG TITLES FOR KOBE and let him hey away with Ra......
DeRozan is absolutely a great player and imho after his Toronto era has probably been severly underrated for years, but for the Kings it would have been way better to acquire PG ( perfect fit for them both defensively and offensively). But yeah, for sure it can't be called a bad move by the king's front office
Barnes is 32 and not getting better…well DeRozen is 35 not a playmaker or defender or floor spacer. He’s gonna take the ball out of ur two best players hands….They got worse defensively, worse spacing, he doesn’t provide any off ball activity. Kings incorporate alot of movement offense, DeRozan is famously iso-heavy.

I agree I think he will contribute a little bit more than barnes
I think the riskier part of the trade is something you didn´t mention. They also sent a 2031 pick swap to the Spurs. Sacramento is a franchise that hasn´t been in contetion for the longest time, so expecting their time getting to the playoffs to last that long is a reach, and that pick swap is unprotected
Kings feel loaded. I’d like to see a serviceable big off bench but they are loaded.
Nahhhh derozan doesn't make them worse than they already were. Barnes is a below average defender same as derozan. Nothing changes defensively
@@winter9242 I don't think you get how bad DeMar is in isos and PNR. If the Kings make the playoffs, he's gonna get played off the floor.
2nd best part of the deal was getting rid of Barns contract.
They need to go all in on Lauri without getting rid of Keegan. If they can rid of Keon and Trey to do so then do it !!!
Kings also sneaky got McLaughlin, ive liked him for years and is a sneaky fan duel when Dlo was out.
bro when tf did barnes turn 32
The kings will be the best team in california
I wouldn't worry too much about the defense. While DeMar is not a defender he'l give you steal here and there for some fastbreak points.
Barnes was weak. Great guy but weak. 16 one night 4 the next then 6...His best night was the first game last season. After that sad. If you are a Kings fan you knew he was getting traded....huerter too🎉 Kings got better 🎉🎉🎉
His Free throws alone will prob win 5 games.
Mention Kobe One Time and Im Blasting!!!! Im from Portland but I sympathize with Sacramento getting Screwed by David Stern so he could RIG TITLES FOR KOBE and let him hey away with Ra......
I get tired of all the 3's the kings take. So many missed points. We need a mid range shooter
DeMar is a mid range master...even back in Toronto...it was his knock.
Sacramento Kings coach brown should sign cedi Osman
Kings roster #5 in the west for me
people are literally just jealous that kings pulled off a amazing trade. the whole league is salty especially the L akers 🤣🤣
