I think it was a mixture of a lot of ice and wind shear causing an extreme decrease in airspeed during approach.

This tragedy was very sad, living in upstate NY an hour away in Rochester this weather is the usual during winter months with very nasty windchill and lake effect snow from Lake Ontario. Icing is notorious for flying in this area and should ALWAYS be highly considered especially at night when temps drop significantly and winds pick up. I remember waking up early for work and see this on the 6am news and the weather was awful the following day also.

It seems that the airlines' economic model and our society's expectation of and demand for such low cost travel is not sustainable. I find it telling that there is no mention of this crash's effects on the carrier's/shareholder's business model. The focus on pilot fatigue and training, while important, is only a part of the larger systemic challenge.

    • @Suisfonia

Because contrary to popular belief, not every fire department KNOWS what houses have gas line access. Here in Vegas, for example, our gas lines are stupidly designed: one side of a street has them, the other side doesn't; then you'll have cases where one house on a block will have it but the others near it won't. I'll give another example. My house doesn't have access to a gas line, but the house to my left *does*. (Wish I had access to gas, would reduce my electrical bill by quite a bit)

This one is extra sad because it was absolutely in their hands. They got sidetracked by mindless chatter and it killed them, along with all their passengers. However the root cause is greed on part of the airline. They were paying that woman less than $16,000 a year - that is shameful and disgusting.

That it led to is mandatory 1500 hours before a pilot can be hired at a commercial airline. It has contributed to the current pilot shortage which leds to flight cancellations. Btw these two pilots had more than the minimum flight hours so that requirement would not have prevented this. Why does the government have to mandate that pilots rest? These two pilots made the wrong decision and it cost lives. Sure we can blame the airlines (they should pay more, that would lead to higher ticket prices, more congested flights and people driving instead of flying which is much more dangerous) there are serious trade offs.
