took a shooting class couple years ago, one of the instructors was a passenger on this flight, he said the funny thing was the landing wasnt even that bad. Not nearly what youd expect. He had nothing but respect for the flight crew, said hes had worse landings on pavement than that crash
One of the funny lines in the film Sully was when Skiles was asked if he would do anything different. He responded, I'd do it in July. While humorous it could have been fatal. Cold water, near freezing, is much more dense than warm water. In the warm water it's more likely the plane would not have landed smoothly with those big engines creating so much drag. The January landing was in itself, a miracle.
The plane is in a museum and it’s profound and eerie at the same time to see in person. No one seems to talk when they see it. I couldn’t spend much time looking at it.
In the case of a disaster, a well-coordinated crew will give the highest chance of a positive outcome. Being able to save everyone on board is always a great result.
I've watched Sully about 30 times. Can't stop. Just a fantastic movie. Yeah, it doesn't strictly 100% follow reality but they did a good job of taking what did happen and turn it in a good movie that can be enjoyed by all. Also glad to hear that Patrick wasn't bothered by Sully's short responses and lack of response. Number 1 rule of flying. Aviate, navigate, communicate. Keep your plane in the air and steady, figure out where you're going, then if there's time, communicate with ATC. Yammering to ATC does you no good if your plane's in a freefall or you have no idea where you're going. A lot was made about the A320's fly by wire systems but Sullenberger himself said that the system did make it impossible for him to achieve the optimal landing flare, which would've softened the impact. So the fly by wire systems weren't the only reason Sully was able to do what he did.
this happened one day before my birthday I remember the news. I couldn't ask for a better birthday present from God than all these people getting saved by two awesome pilots.
8:44 - I was kind of waiting for the part where Captain Sully jumps ahead of the _quick reference handbook_ and started the APU or auxiliary power unit. Because of his actions, the airline actually changed their QRH to make THAT step one. Without engines and without the APU running, there is no hydraulic control, and there is no power to maintain the batteries. Edit: OK, they finally mentioned it at 27:15.
I think I heard the narrator say they were at 3K feet at the time of the strike, a mile is a little over 5K! What kind of birds are these, it takes a jet engine to bring one down 🤔. 3K is over 1/2 mile in the air, these birds are bad dudes.
"Did the pilots do the right thing".. yeah they did! They saved everyone on board. I know they have a job to do investigating but seems like they always want to blame the pilots.
A little bit of non essential interest. Skiles was one of the pilots that flew the B-29 ‘Doc’s First Flight’ on its flight from McConnell AFB in Wichita, after being restored.
Maybe it's my imagination, but it almost sounded like there was a hint of annoyance when he said "We're going to be in the Hudson" the second time, like "Didn't you hear me the first time‽"
I know it's just a show, but when it landed and the cap and 1st officer just sit there and sigh? I think it's more like the second it landed they had no time to look at each other and sigh. They immediately jumped to action.
Why can't they simply put a screen over the engines? This would protect the engines and the birds. And resorting to euthanizing whole colonies of birds? How hard would it be to move the birds to a new location instead of killing them? The cost of transportation cannot be much more than the cost of killing them. What they need to do, long term, is find something that will automatically discourage the birds from roosting in the area. Crows, for instance, are often scared off (not with scarecrows) but with realistic owl statues. Probably hawk statues, too, since both owls and hawks are predatory birds.
@@loughton57 I did not see it. Honestly, if there are already a lot of comments, I don't check them all. But we agree. I still want to know why they don't put screens over the engines. It's one little step that could make all the difference.
While this landing was great, this is not a very hard landing to do because the Hudson River was no swells of 20 foot waves like the oceans have. The best landing ever was the Gimli Glider accident. Captain Bob Pearson. That was all the captain's doing saving that plane and 0 people died.
Bravo to Sully and his FO.. but Instead of euthanizing those beautiful birds why wouldn't they transport them somewhere else, so sad how society has no regard for wildlife, and human life. It's barbaric!
You ain't even kidding I lived on Pensacola Beach Florida growing up and those shits would torture me for sport I'm fully convinced that they plotted and planned coordinated attacks on me daily lol.
@@SublimeLyfeNow You gotta know, one day soon, Mother Nature will have her ultimate revenge on humanity for the way that we've been mistreating her for the past several centuries now. LOL!
Birds always seek a natural habitat. New york city is not a natural habitat for humans. Therefore the birds are in the right and the humans going into and out of nyc are the problem, not the birds. Eliminate travel into nyc.
There are many pilots who have done great things to save aircrafts and the passengers. Not sure why this crew became that famous. Sure they did heroic work but Captain sully also capitalized big from this incident.

Sullenberger and Skiles are the type of pilots that I wish were on EVERY flight. They are heros !!!❤❤

It wasn't a crash...it was a ditching
@@tugbankert6581 lives lost or not, Ditching is a type of crash. the effect is that water is only slightly softer than buildings
@@theduke7539 Every landing is a type of crash, most can still fly afterward.

It probably depended where you were. The passengers in the back said it was extremely rough.
He's definitely a hero. Calm, focused and intelligent man. Excellent example of how to handle a disaster. Kudos 👏
No matter how many times I see this I still think: Man what a crew.

very sad day i love birds 🐦 i have 6 in my home 🏡
From the text: "United Airlines Captain Chesley Sullenberger..." It's US Airways
Can’t believe most of them are not wearing the life vest
Or having Patrick's job at Laguardia, then going to the union office with your shop Stewart, and management post crash? Horrible.......
They’re two types of people in this world. Sully and the ATC guy. One is traumatized. Ones a fuckin legend
The goal is not to reduce the number of geese, but to reduce the number of jets by reducing the number of folks involved with nyc.
