Legacy being discontinued.. you need to Zonk this!! So bummed. I had a 2008 legacy and I loved it. I upgraded to a 2021 Impreza and wanted to switch back to a legacy again and now I don’t know what to do.
Being a former 2007 Impreza owner, I wanted Subaru to be different and bold. They had the recipe sitting right there, but safe and unimaginative is the way they went. Ie, the boxer style gave them the advantage of amazing center gravity during tight turns. The AWD speaks for itself. Its built like a tank, most Emergency responders knew what they faced arriving to a wreck based on the vehicle involved. Subaru had all this and so much more going for them, and rather than swing for the fence, they bunted to third base. The result, many of us left the brand and here we are.... Hurts my heart! I bought a 2010 Legacy sedan for my son at the Russian mafia car lots in Tampa back in the day, same basic color. Brings back memories. Thanks for the great review and hope it somehow sticks around!
I replaced my '07 Legacy with a Mazda 3 AWD in part because I'm still not sold on CVTs, but I'm still sad to see the Legacy going away like too many other sedans.
I've owned 2 legacy in my life, 2001 and 2011. I'm still driving the 2011 legacy with 140k mileage and it's still in good shape except for a loud engine noise at startup. 😅
I had a 2022 Legacy Touring XT and while it was a nice car, I could never get 24 mpg while driving in the city. I was getting closer to 15-16 mpg and trust me; I don't have a heavy foot.
Driving it softer is the issue lol. Being slightly more aggressive with mine and I get those numbers pretty easily and yes it doesn't make sense. Getting regularly 29mpg everywhere else and on a few trips I've hit 30. Not bad for an AWD car.
Love my 2018 Legacy Limited and a few quirks will not sway my devotion to this terrific car. One quirk is having to hold down the volume button to actually turn off the radio. Maybe that got changed? The other was the many times I wanted a power trunk complete with the Karate Kid Sweep the leg open & close feature. Nice ride quality and I surprise and delight any rear passengers with all the room that's back there. Add in the safety features and it's a real shame more people are not aware of just how great it truly can be. Thanks Joe & Lori for giving a fine eulogy to a car with an under appreciated Legacy!
It was a worthy competitor to the Camry and the Accord. Probably not selling enough these days. The crossover craze apparently still going strong. They will allocate their dollars on the Forester, Ascent and Crosstrek. Additionally always good insights and appropriate zonks. Completely agree, they should have used the aluminized satin trim over the old-school chrome on the door handle insets. The 2-tone high quality interior in that Touring trim is pretty sweet.
I had a 2020 Legacy XT turbo, the first year for this style. It drove well, had a nice interior, was solidly built, and was a good value. Its secondary purpose seemed to be to annoy me with tremendously buggy electronics. The lane centering was awful and I had to fight it from tugging to the right. Was lucky to dump it when used car prices took off.
Omg!!!!! That interior looks gorgeous! Soooo much more premium than the Camry. And hey 32 mpg highway is pretty good. In the burbs the Crosstrek and Impreza is still heavily bought. But wow. The Legacy could had easily rivaled the Camry had they really wanted too.
I have a 2023 Outback Touring XT. I had a 2012 Legacy Limited with the great 3.6 liter boxer 6. Great smooth fast and comfortable sedan. Looked new - only 12k miles - one of the Subaru mechanics saw me bring it in and took me aside to offer me 4K over blue book - he loved that particular year w the full grey leather and dark blue paint. Looked like new. Always hand washed. The 3.6 pulled a ton of low end torque and was smooth and fast with a real 5 speed automatic. Frankly I turned him down. I gave it to my son for gradation at MIT. He’s loving it and treating it right in Cambridge as he works on his PhD. I’m loving the Outback with the turbo and am anxious to see the 2026 Outback. My daughter is graduating from CalTech next year and there’s a Subaru in her future!
You for got about the dining Mirrors, the back seats can be put down from the inside, the adjustable head rests, and front side Insulated glass on the front side windows
When Subaru of America announced the Legacy was coming to an end - my immediate thought was, I needed to get one. I may before the end of this year. This is such a nice sedan and so under appreciated. The Camry is nice, don’t get me wrong but this car is where it is at.
I had a 2021 Legacy Touring XT in a blue with tan Nappa leather interior. It was a nice looking car and those seats were so comfy and smelled so good. That said, by the first oil change it had an oil pan leak that had it in the dealership for two weeks until the gasket kit could come in. Common problem with the 2.4 turbo I found out. Also, it had rattles and buzzes all over the interior. The dealer could hear them, fixed four of them in the dash, two doors and air conditioner vents. They never could fix the rattle in the sunroof. The worst thing was the driveability. That 260 HP turbo should have never been paired with a CVT. Unless I really feather footed the throttle it surged, jerked and hesitated. The dealer told me it is what it is, there were no software updates to fix it. A friend drove it and he noticed it immediately. It wasn't just me. Plus the Driver Focus system couldn't be disabled permanently. I don't like all the false alerts it gave telling me to keep my eyes on the road even when I was. I think it was my glasses keeping the camera from seeing my eyes in certain light. Regardless, it was the most frustrating car I've owned. Great sound system, great looking interior, so comfortable, great highway cruiser, but a pain to drive in town. City MPG was always five less than the EPA estimate. I got rid of it last winter. Didn't trust it for the long haul.
Good luck, finding one and they need to put the scoop back on the hood on those. I’m remember when that generation first came out. I was so disappointed.
I love my '17 Legacy - best car I've ever owned (and I've owned a lot!) What sold me on it was the handling - better than the Accord, Camry, Passat, Fusion, and Malibu of that time (the only car that matched its handling was the Mazda 6, but it lacked interior space). The low center of gravity due to the boxer engine really does make a difference!
The only thing I regret from selling this unique car is the resale value and the Harman Kardon (very good IMO compared to many other cars setup) it was a blast even at the max volume it would not lose quality. CVT even if the best in the market just kills the heritage of such a mighty car! Now imagine this car with a ZF8 and with a sport mode and adaptive dumpers!? A frkn rocket 🚀. Thank God It only lost $5k value in 3?years! On dirt roads it was a Beast, very very fun and in control.
Highlights of driving a 1990 Legacy sedan: 1.) Top Speed 110 mph. 2.) Pillarless doors. 3.) Panasonic Stereo had 1/8" Aux input, Cassette, and CD source inputs. 4.) Key had a built in LED flashlight.
A great review of a good car. I own a 2021. Its sad that they are killing off such a good car. The style looks nice and clean. One can only hope that Subaru will bring it back someday.
Just got this car. Exact same color and interior. I wanted a sedan and didn't like any of the others, and didnt want to pay 50-60k for a lower tier model of the higher end sedans. All wheel drive is great, turn radius is nice and tight, outstanding comfortable ride, great visibility, solid power if you're up in the higher speeds but from a complete stop it has lag and the torque doesn't kick in til 2k rpms. But it's not really that type of car. If you're on the highway and need to make moves, it will MOVE. Safety features can be annoying but i dont mind them at all. In fact, it's useful if you want to drive home tired or drunk. The infotainment gets a lot of hate but i mean what you really need out of it? Great car tho, i highly recommend.
Finally they turbo charge these. I always thought it was a better alternative to the Impreza, and if they only would put the EJ 22 turbo and then it would’ve been the tuners paradise I’ve had two WRX, which I loved I was always disappointed that they wouldn’t take care of the legacy. I think it’s a little bit too late though my mature side actually went with the Camry SE and I love it and it’s pretty quick for what it is a hybrid and I won’t have to worry about any liability issues.
i had a 2015 legacy premium and loved that car which wasn't as nice as this one. my only complaints i had was i wish it had a little more pep and the basic sound system was pretty weak. it only had the 2.5 NA 4 cyl. engine so it dragged a little bit. having the turbo would have been nice. the sound system was probably my least favorite part. it just wasn't loud. big fan of this one. the only thing i would like to see different is more physical buttons instead of so many in the infotainment screen. love the analog/digital mix for the instrument cluster.
A "plethora" of pockets for your pocket stuffing pleasure. Some makes only give you ONE pocket and Subie gives you six. I think this car is a bargain for what you get. Great review as always, Joe. Now you have a pocket for your rocket.
No standard remote start on an almost $40k car (its available to be installed by Subaru but adds a 2nd separate remote) and the CVT is awkward with the turbo engine. The CVT does not match up well and dulls the performance. Its a shame Subaru is killing off the Legacy. I really like it. I test drove a Legacy Sport with the turbo and the XT model. The remote start omission is odd, but that CVT holds this car back from being really really good *Joe, the wheels are the same size on the Sport and XT. Both use 18” wheels. The Sport does get Si drive while the XT does not
I've sold and driven many a Legacy over the years. It is the least appreciated, most underrated, unrecognized sporty sedan in the market. This is a great driving car. Period. Every test drive l ever did in a Legacy had ended with something like, "Wow, that was an unexpectedly GOOD driver for a Family Sedan!" This should be a long termer with care and proper maintenance. I would have no qualms whatsoever buying this car for a "long termer".
I wouldn't call it sporty on their later generations, but they are exceptionally great long distance cruisers. I had a 2007, 2011, 2016 and 2019. I think the 2019 was the best rendition behind the 2007
In spite of CR pushing this car for years, Subaru couldn't get much excitement about it. They never marketed it since Subaru doesn't push anything that isn't "outdoors" lifestyle. They could have marketed more as a WRX/STI style GT model with a sport suspension, the turbo, and a more aggressive options, but Subaru has given up on sport cars; they have a tunnel vision with only "outdoorsy" car line.
Just traded my 18’ Legacy 2.5L for a 2013 M37 with just 30k miles. From the reliability, to the super slow performance to the build quality, to the CVT. I hated this car.
Wait, what? Did you say that the intercooler for the turbo is in the front? Dude, it's right on top and fed clean air through a hidden scoop at the TOP of the grille, not the bottom.
I had a Legacy and a Camry. The Camry had better engine power and quieter drive. It felt like a much more expensive car. The Legacy was cheap around the edges but solid. In the end, I think Camry wins simply because they have a much much larger dealer network and not because it's a much better car.
My first car was an 08 Legacy GT that I absolutely loved. Traded it in after 200K miles to a 22 WRX. I like it, but I wish the spec. B still existed. The WRX feels cheap compared to even my old Legacy.
Its weird they have real buttons for the climate control temperature considering that with climate control the whole point is to set it and let it do its thing. I dont think I ever changed it when I had CC except for the first few days of ownership.
First the impreza sedan is killed off, then now the legacy. Every manufacturer seems to be ending the more fuel efficient sedans. And at the same time, people are buying larger vehicles and complaining about the price of gas. The loss is sad because it is a really cost effective vehicle with the base model at ~24 K.
The loss of a special car! But, the sales don't lie. Still, this was a hidden gem in the Subaru lineup - it's thousands less than an Outback. These were super cool up until the 2009 model - the generation after that still had cool moments, but it's been going downhill from there. Now with the CVT and no clear performance model - and without the specialiness of the hoodscoop etc, it's a shadow of its former self. It's too bad, because as the market moves toward AWD, this really "should" be the industry standard. I think this segment really emphasizes MPG's and this just doesn't cut the mustard, unfortunately. Hope it comes back!
the base NA engine is just fine unless you really like to drive fast and gets better mpg. you can get the limited (not XT) trim which has all the goodies with the base engine for thousands less. Buy hey it's your money.
I have a 2022 Limited XT. Smooth is the operative word. It rides great and is very comfortable on trips with great room for passengers too. The engine has plenty of power and is quiet too. The CVT isn't bad though at full throttle I wish it wouldn't fake shift as you feel the power stop a bit while it pretends. It might add 0.5 seconds to 60 because of it. Let the CVT be a CVT! Otherwise, it's a great car that deserved better attention from Subaru to make it stand out. While it's still my choice over the Camry and Accord because of the overall package, but it could use some spicing up (a new Legacy Spec B performance model anyone?) and some boldness in the styling. It's a shame that good sedans are getting the axe these days. Subaru needs to bring on a new BRAT to compete with the Santa Cruz. That would at least be something interesting for them to do and drop the Solterra (such a lifeless bland Toyota...like all Toyotas).
This is a great car ... so sad its being discontinued.

VISIBILITY--the Legacy has the best visibility of alllll mid-sizes (both forward, and rear.)
yes. the subaru legacy is criminally underrated
They both are "legacy" in a way. ICE dinosaurs. Great video, Joe!
i had a 2015 legacy premium and loved that car which wasn't as nice as this one. my only complaints i had was i wish it had a little more pep and the basic sound system was pretty weak. it only had the 2.5 NA 4 cyl. engine so it dragged a little bit. having the turbo would have been nice. the sound system was probably my least favorite part. it just wasn't loud. big fan of this one. the only thing i would like to see different is more physical buttons instead of so many in the infotainment screen. love the analog/digital mix for the instrument cluster.
Darn those Thomas Edison light bulbs. lol
Great review thank you.
Nice car but that CVT is a deal breaker. Once again you bring the best reviews.
U barely can tell it's one by the way it drives
Sad to see it discontinued. It couldn’t compete in sales against the Camry or Accord. It’s unique since not many are on the road.
The legacy, was THE perfect sedan
Joe, I’m pretty sure the wheels on the Sport model are 18” as well and not 19” variety. I’d assume it would produce a similar ride.
A "plethora" of pockets for your pocket stuffing pleasure. Some makes only give you ONE pocket and Subie gives you six. I think this car is a bargain for what you get. Great review as always, Joe. Now you have a pocket for your rocket.
Love your car video
No standard remote start on an almost $40k car (its available to be installed by Subaru but adds a 2nd separate remote) and the CVT is awkward with the turbo engine. The CVT does not match up well and dulls the performance. Its a shame Subaru is killing off the Legacy. I really like it. I test drove a Legacy Sport with the turbo and the XT model. The remote start omission is odd, but that CVT holds this car back from being really really good
*Joe, the wheels are the same size on the Sport and XT. Both use 18” wheels. The Sport does get Si drive while the XT does not
Whishing they would have put a scoop on the hood.
Yeah, it would be nicer than the one hidden in the grille. Though this is more of a sleeper without it
@@EricGrassi It just looks like regular traffic tho. IDK i like the aggressive look of how they used to look.
Strange decision to cancel it now that they're really only competing with Hyundai and Kia for the non-hybrid sedan market.
I thought so as well.
RIP! Love this car, it’s legacy will not be forgotten 🙏
I don’t understand why Subaru can’t offer LED rear turn signals on any of their models… Even in their top trims…
That is a very good question Eric!
I think the 2019 was the best rendition behind the 2007
I don’t agree. I drove camry, accord , passat, sonata, mazda 6, altima and legacy. Legacy was worst.
Even my dad was never this early
I had a 2003 Legacy GT 5 speed AWD...great car...they were special then compared to a camry
Pretty good lil daily driver.
I totally agree with you Daniel!
CONFIGURABILITY and colors----this car can be configured in gorgeous tan interior with leather. You don't get that anymore :(
Yes of course and I better buy this car quick.
If Suburu would have given it a sleek Sportback/hatch body, with hybrid assist, it would still survive. Otherwise, adios.....
Love it and sad to see this baby go!
I love Subaru, sad news for the Legacy. But I'll keep buying them😊
