I feel like 2K did this game a disservice by calling it "Definitive Edition". Most games with this title are minimal upgrades/all the dlc included. I did not realize how impressive of a remake this was going to be.
I have to agree, this isn't a remaster as such, it's more of a remake of the game from the ground up using modern game engines and hardware and it really shows. I wish more remaster would get this level of treatment.
I think they went with Definitive to stay in line with 2, 3, and the whole "Definitive Collection" moniker. As far as 2K doing the game a disservice... While I don't think 2K redefined what a Definitive Edition is I do think they raised the bar considerably. People should expect more than just a fancy new coat of paint. Hopefully 2K continues with this mindset.

@@Deliveredmean42 True, a remaster seems like a touch up on the existing games with a few extra bells and whistles and in many cases, it's just the PC port on the consoles, a remakes is more or less the same game but remade from the ground up in a new engine, that takes a lot more effort but the results looks good where a game from a decade or so ago can look really good today which is rarely the case with a remaster, the problem is with remakes is that it cost money and time to do because they are more or less reinventing that game so I can understand why they would want to charge full price for it compared to a remaster.
The sound is impressive too. Like when honking and going through tunnels and it sounds realistic. It’s little details like that that shows they put in work.
I was watching a gameplay video of this and the dude was inside a restaurant location. While he was in there one of the trains passed overhead and as it passed it caused the plates and glasses to rattle inside the restaurant. A small detail but it was super cool.
Kinda bizarre that this game was hailed as a set-up for next-gen, but Hangar 13/THQ utterly ignored the next-gen consoles that released literally 2 months afterwards.

Playing this game made me realise we don't actually need ray tracing. The most amazing reflections I have ever seen in any game and it doesn't even have ray tracing!

@@ashank9856 As mentioned in the video, this game does implement raytracing that uses SSR (Software) data rather than frame data directly from the GPU (Hardware). So the lighting and reflections in this game would not be possible without Ray Tracing. While not physically accurate, it’s still very convincing. But it does indeed, trace rays.
@@moreuse nope it is not ray tracing ..its a Ray trace screen space reflection mixed with cupemaps.. the alignment of reflection is accurate but with limitations not all scenery can be reflected on car some of tge details is missing.. This method is very time consuming to implement in a real big open world game.. Mafia one remake is a big upgrade interms of visual graphics over mafia 3 by a far.. The engine graphics is the same between mafia 1 and 3 but the outcome is very different.. I think the enhance engine from mafia 1 is the true next gen ps4/xbox one was supposed to be,.. Mafia 3 graphics looks very outdated looks like a ps3 graphics at its best..
I think the real deal here is the software Ray tracing.. Hardware ray tracing is still overrated and power consuming.. I hope next gen titles push framerates and resolution by implementing this rather relying on hardware power..Playstation first party studios can do it better I guess

I still think the obsession with the resolution is absurd. 30 fps should be the bare minimum, being the fluidity the goal. All the artefacts, screen tearing and all make the games way uglier than a relatively low resolution, IMHO
This game nailed headlights unlike any game I’ve ever seen. When you look at them at night, you can almost feel the heat coming off them, like they would burn your hand they’re so hot. The devs nailed that super bright, white hot those old cars headlights had.

I can’t believe the performance and graphics this game delivers on just a PS4 Pro. It’s like the cherry on top for the end of this gen. What a masterpiece. This is now one of my favorite games of all time.
I'm really angry that the devs haven't released a 60 fps on the next gen consoles like it would've boosted the sales ik it released 2 months before next gen consoles dropped but it still could've made me them alot of money it's just so baffling to me why haven't they done it already, words cannot Express my confusion enough.

People complain about PS5 having 'only' 10TF, yet machines with 1TF (and much inferior overal hardware) are running these graphics. Haters and fanboys may cry all they want, but for actual unbiased fans of videogames, 9th gen will be amazing, no matter the platform.
Kinda bugged me that he talked about the global illumination but didn't bother to highlight it in gameplay, like seriously I think it's some of the best non-ray trace global illumination effects I've ever seen in video game so far!
It'll be interesting to see how people react when hardware raytraced GI finally kicks in and people complain about it not looking better. We have gotten so good at "faking "GI that the most positive effect will be less development time as a lesser amount of things have to be placed by hand. Sorry for hijacking your comment. Yeah. Some games have excellent lighting that genuinely awes me and these are without ray tracing. If ray tracing is significantly taxing on the resources of the next gen machines, I rather they leave out ray tracing because the lighting can look amazing without. Im all for 60fps first.
They did highlight it in game. They talked about it and if you couldn't see what they was talking about in the game then you should have played more attention to the video!

Also my gripe is when he talked about it the footage didn't particularly highlight the features in gameplay like they did with the ray traced SSR.

No mention of the HDR implementation? I’m playing on PC and HDR has been inexcusably omitted there. Otherwise I’m impressed by the stunning lighting and reflections. One of the best looking open world games of this generation.

At first was disappointed as well. But after testing it on my OneX (borrowed Disk from a friend), I wasn't impressed by the HDR at all, in contrary to many other games. Went back to PC without FOMO. Looks better overall with max settings at least on my Sony TV, rock solid 60 fps, and cleaner picture even at the same 1440p. And impressive Headphone Surround for free with HeSuVi (as a bonus - not essential of course). I really think you can enjoy your PC Version.
It runs amazing on my PS4 Pro and I am super happy to play one of the best game of my childhood. I love it so much and I am enjoying every second of it. The graphics are up to 2020 standards. Whish they would have done this to Mafia 2. Will Hanger 13 make a Mafis 4 also ? A man can dream. Congratulations Hanger 13 for bringing back a masterpiece and in such an amazing way.
Lets hope they are making a next gen mafia 4 , ( vegas in the 70s/80s ) with a open world with things to do. And encountering side missions organicly. And for example that pooltable. That would be awsome to play it ( against somebody online ) .
You're not playing "game of your childhood". You either don't remember anything about it or you lying that you've played it at all. Enjoy this game all you want, just don't pretend it's the same game as original. It really isn't. The right thing to do would've been to call this "Mafia Reimagined". Calling it "Definitive Edition" was a complete douchebag move.
At 4:57 that SSR on the puddle was very noticeable. He ran in front of it, and it disabled reflections from the other side of the street. It made the reflection white, over a night background.
Tuncay D Considering these games are locked in resolution and at 30Fps it'll play at the same maximum resolution from the respective platforms they replace. 900p on Series S and no fps drops due to much better CPU and still 1440p on Series X and 30fps. There is no option to unlock or such to 60fps or higher resolution so unless the developers update the game themselves or allows Microsoft to do so then as a pure backwards compatible stand point you'll have no frame rate drops and same exact resolution.
MoonNight Yes it is however this game has locked resolutions and locked frame rate so it will just play more stable on the Series S it won't have any visual upgrades or enhancements or increase in frame rate unless the developers do so themselves or allows MS.

I can't believe how much they improved over Mafia 3's graphics engine, there are definitely some issues that carry over from 3 but overall the game looks great. The only time it looks bad is when it's extremely bright outside. I had my brightness up too high initially and turning that down did help with how it looked.
My only main gripe with it is a pretty dodgy v-sync during certain cutscenes, which can result in a lot of tearing. I am indeed on my dear sweet base PS4. Otherwise it's a great capture of the time period and I'm loving it. Hopefully patches can iron this out.
I just got mafia remake to enjoy and relive the experience but I can’t even play it because it’s capped at 30 fps and I have an oled TV. I had to return it. It’s truly unbelievable this company can’t even bother to patch the game for 60 fps on nextgen ? How fucking lazy lol
@@LeeBenjammin yes they can. Series X can double the framerate on select titles. We are not talking about games with unlocked framerates, that's not double the framerates. It's something like the Heutchy method where xbox360 games get 4x the resolution without touching gamecode. Xbox BC team are the best in the business.

Been playing on one X and I’m honestly surprised it’s 1440p and not native 4k. If that’s what 1440p looks like, then I’d much prefer that with higher ratings and frame rate than 4K
Mohammed definitely like 4k but if I had to choose between ray traced 4K 30fps, and ray traced 1440p 60fps, I’m choosing the latter. Resolution higher than 1440p is very expensive and not very noticeable
Great look into the engine. Very cool explaining the software ray tracing. I wish you could speak of the texture popping/streaming that sometimes occurs. To Hangar 13, well done. The updated engine looks fantastic. I love the game. I wish guns had a bit more heft especially in sound effects like the original game. I miss the old soundtrack. Character models look great but man it’s hard to decide if you seeing Paulie or Sam. The original was distinct. A great work though. Keep it up.
Dude I've been wondering about those reflections. They look awesome yet they're definitely not screen space because they don't disappear even when the object isn't in view at all. I thought only ray tracing could do that.
Man, Im having a blast with this game. I just finished chapter 4 - 5 and it had me busting! I don think I've laughed in a game this much. The shooting was on point too. You could actually feel the impact of the bullets and it was gnarly the way bodies just fell like a sack of potatoes.
I’ve been enjoying this game so far on the xbone x, my main concern is that the walking/running controls feel sooooo clunky! Just the movement is not fluid or nice feeling at all. Definitely a nice looking game when driving around though. Love the chiaroscuro lighting on the death screens.
NCR Trooper I’ll have to free roam a bit more outside of the city to find out but it’s not great in the city. Pretty noticeable everywhere so I don’t think the draw distance is any better vs the PS4 Pro just based on that.
Played this through on Pro. The pop in and checker artifacting is crazy bad and honestly really distracting, same shit as Mafia 3, seems Hanger 13 didn't learn from that. Besides that and some bad enemy AI which bumbles around in a firefight, great game.
Yeah, same issues on pc. The game mechanics are not polished and unfiinished. This game should release a month later so they will have time to finish it... Now we have to wait for patches and this is outrageous for 40€ game

To Rog Ally/steam deck/hand held viewers: yes this game runs amazing on handhelds. I have an ROG Ally, get 35-45 fps even on the 15w mode on 900p mid settings. Prob 25-30fps on 1080p
Bought it because it's on sale. I just couldn't buy it otherwise as I wasn't sure I'd like it. I think some aspects of the series are strong but overall don't often find them enjoyable. Played a lot of it already, and I like it. Visually, this is ripe for a current-gen hardware update because it already looks very good. Maybe a bit more texture detail and a jump to 60fps. Honestly, this game at 4k/60fps and ray traced shadows/reflections would make this demo worthy based on how good it already looks. Not saying current-gen hardware would be able to do that, just saying it would look more impressive than 95 percent of games. The game does have some odd visual glitches, though rare.
6:50 I mean, if the next gen consoles provide a "good enough" hardware based ray tracing solution, then I'm probably not wrong in saying that it's going to be much easier to implement and optimize it compared to making screen space reflections as good as they are here. The result should look much better with much less effort, and that's what RTX was pioneering.
Still hope they can improve the TAA, makes a very noticable trail behind and can sometimes make a very low shutter speed "motivation blur" example on guns when they collide with objects. and some how I noticed SSR artifacts more on this game than others not really sure why.
Does the game not have a gamma slider? Otherwise I had this "issue" also in Witcher 3. It was caused by 10 Bit Color Settings in Nvidia Control Panel. Everygame looked very fine tho. Just Witcher 3 was sucking

Does screen tear happen on lower framerate like 30fps? Unless your TV/Monitor is has less than 30Hz, then there should be no tearing.

@@jacktonsauron8185 no sadly it's not 60 fps. I've played it on the ps5. The game tbh is really not optimised at all buggy sometimes, a lot of fps drops but could be just me.
People complain about PS5 having 'only' 10TF, yet machines with 1TF (and much inferior overal hardware) are running these graphics. Haters and fanboys may cry all they want, but for actual unbiased fans of videogames, 9th gen will be amazing, no matter the platform.

Kinda bugged me that he talked about the global illumination but didn't bother to highlight it in gameplay, like seriously I think it's some of the best non-ray trace global illumination effects I've ever seen in video game so far!
It'll be interesting to see how people react when hardware raytraced GI finally kicks in and people complain about it not looking better. We have gotten so good at "faking "GI that the most positive effect will be less development time as a lesser amount of things have to be placed by hand. Sorry for hijacking your comment. Yeah. Some games have excellent lighting that genuinely awes me and these are without ray tracing. If ray tracing is significantly taxing on the resources of the next gen machines, I rather they leave out ray tracing because the lighting can look amazing without. Im all for 60fps first.
They did highlight it in game. They talked about it and if you couldn't see what they was talking about in the game then you should have played more attention to the video!

Also my gripe is when he talked about it the footage didn't particularly highlight the features in gameplay like they did with the ray traced SSR.

I've noticed some of the textures are super low resolution. Almost like they don't load in. It's odd.

At first was disappointed as well. But after testing it on my OneX (borrowed Disk from a friend), I wasn't impressed by the HDR at all, in contrary to many other games. Went back to PC without FOMO. Looks better overall with max settings at least on my Sony TV, rock solid 60 fps, and cleaner picture even at the same 1440p. And impressive Headphone Surround for free with HeSuVi (as a bonus - not essential of course). I really think you can enjoy your PC Version.
It runs amazing on my PS4 Pro and I am super happy to play one of the best game of my childhood. I love it so much and I am enjoying every second of it. The graphics are up to 2020 standards. Whish they would have done this to Mafia 2. Will Hanger 13 make a Mafis 4 also ? A man can dream.

Lets hope they are making a next gen mafia 4 , ( vegas in the 70s/80s ) with a open world with things to do. And encountering side missions organicly. And for example that pooltable. That would be awsome to play it ( against somebody online ) .

At 4:57 that SSR on the puddle was very noticeable. He ran in front of it, and it disabled reflections from the other side of the street. It made the reflection white, over a night background.

Tuncay D Considering these games are locked in resolution and at 30Fps it'll play at the same maximum resolution from the respective platforms they replace. 900p on Series S and no fps drops due to much better CPU and still 1440p on Series X and 30fps. There is no option to unlock or such to 60fps or higher resolution so unless the developers update the game themselves or allows Microsoft to do so then as a pure backwards compatible stand point you'll have no frame rate drops and same exact resolution.
MoonNight Yes it is however this game has locked resolutions and locked frame rate so it will just play more stable on the Series S it won't have any visual upgrades or enhancements or increase in frame rate unless the developers do so themselves or allows MS.

I can't believe how much they improved over Mafia 3's graphics engine, there are definitely some issues that carry over from 3 but overall the game looks great. The only time it looks bad is when it's extremely bright outside. I had my brightness up too high initially and turning that down did help with how it looked.

My only main gripe with it is a pretty dodgy v-sync during certain cutscenes, which can result in a lot of tearing. I am indeed on my dear sweet base PS4. Otherwise it's a great capture of the time period and I'm loving it. Hopefully patches can iron this out.

I just got mafia remake to enjoy and relive the experience but I can’t even play it because it’s capped at 30 fps and I have an oled TV. I had to return it. It’s truly unbelievable this company can’t even bother to patch the game for 60 fps on nextgen ? How fucking lazy lol

It's something like the Heutchy method where xbox360 games get 4x the resolution without touching gamecode. Xbox BC team are the best in the business.

Been playing on one X and I’m honestly surprised it’s 1440p and not native 4k. If that’s what 1440p looks like, then I’d much prefer that with higher ratings and frame rate than 4K
Mohammed definitely like 4k but if I had to choose between ray traced 4K 30fps, and ray traced 1440p 60fps, I’m choosing the latter. Resolution higher than 1440p is very expensive and not very noticeable

Great look into the engine. Very cool explaining the software ray tracing. I wish you could speak of the texture popping/streaming that sometimes occurs.

I wish guns had a bit more heft especially in sound effects like the original game. I miss the old soundtrack. Character models look great but man it’s hard to decide if you seeing Paulie or Sam. The original was distinct. A great work though. Keep it up.

Dude I've been wondering about those reflections. They look awesome yet they're definitely not screen space because they don't disappear even when the object isn't in view at all. I thought only ray tracing could do that.

There are other techniques than screen space reflections. Using informations other than what's on the screen, as "screen space" clearly states

Man, Im having a blast with this game. I just finished chapter 4 - 5 and it had me busting! I don think I've laughed in a game this much. The shooting was on point too. You could actually feel the impact of the bullets and it was gnarly the way bodies just fell like a sack of potatoes.

I’ve been enjoying this game so far on the xbone x, my main concern is that the walking/running controls feel sooooo clunky! Just the movement is not fluid or nice feeling at all. Definitely a nice looking game when driving around though. Love the chiaroscuro lighting on the death screens.

NCR Trooper I’ll have to free roam a bit more outside of the city to find out but it’s not great in the city. Pretty noticeable everywhere so I don’t think the draw distance is any better vs the PS4 Pro just based on that.

Played this through on Pro. The pop in and checker artifacting is crazy bad and honestly really distracting, same shit as Mafia 3, seems Hanger 13 didn't learn from that. Besides that and some bad enemy AI which bumbles around in a firefight, great game.
Yeah, same issues on pc. The game mechanics are not polished and unfiinished. This game should release a month later so they will have time to finish it... Now we have to wait for patches and this is outrageous for 40€ game

The animations in this game are total dogshit. The combat is so wonky and embarrassing. But at least the story is pretty good.

Didn't have that experience on the Xbox One X. Great AI and no pop in.
Talking about the reflections and completely not showing any hood cam views where you can really see how well it works in the car's bodywork.

To Rog Ally/steam deck/hand held viewers: yes this game runs amazing on handhelds. I have an ROG Ally, get 35-45 fps even on the 15w mode on 900p mid settings. Prob 25-30fps on 1080p
BASE PS4 IS SUCH A LEGEND. SOLID PERFORMANCE OVERALL
Bought it because it's on sale. I just couldn't buy it otherwise as I wasn't sure I'd like it. I think some aspects of the series are strong but overall don't often find them enjoyable. Played a lot of it already, and I like it. Visually, this is ripe for a current-gen hardware update because it already looks very good. Maybe a bit more texture detail and a jump to 60fps. Honestly, this game at 4k/60fps and ray traced shadows/reflections would make this demo worthy based on how good it already looks. Not saying current-gen hardware would be able to do that, just saying it would look more impressive than 95 percent of games. The game does have some odd visual glitches, though rare.

So what's that artifact on the hanging pants at 4:08? Not picking, just curious from a technical side.
The dithering of the hair and odd motion blur artefacts over particles is really distracting for me even at 1440p max settings.

6:50 I mean, if the next gen consoles provide a "good enough" hardware based ray tracing solution, then I'm probably not wrong in saying that it's going to be much easier to implement and optimize it compared to making screen space reflections as good as they are here. The result should look much better with much less effort, and that's what RTX was pioneering.

Still hope they can improve the TAA, makes a very noticable trail behind and can sometimes make a very low shutter speed "motivation blur" example on guns when they collide with objects. and some how I noticed SSR artifacts more on this game than others not really sure why.
yep! the trailing blur ghosting thingy is really distracting for the first 2-4 hours. After that, im really glad my brain finally ignores it.

Played it on my new PC (3080 10900k) and I was so impressed by the graphics! This makes me so hyped for next gen games!
A little off-topic, I'm playing on PC and the game is so dim, I have to crank brightness on my monitor way up. Don't have that in any other game.

Otherwise I had this "issue" also in Witcher 3. It was caused by 10 Bit Color Settings in Nvidia Control Panel. Everygame looked very fine tho. Just Witcher 3 was sucking
