    Faye Dunaway. She was once a powerhouse in late 60's and 70's of New Hollywood but faded very quickly after her Oscar winning performance in the brilliantly written, incredible satire about the Media (Network) and even more so after that weird and bizarre Joan Crawford biopic (Mommie Dearest) in the early 80's. Its a real shame too because her whole career is one of the big what ifs imo. She wasn't treated well by Hollywood for a long time on the basis of been "been really difficult to work with" and "unprofessional" as if nobody else much bigger and held to a much higher regard didn't have those issues and a lot more like been drunk on set which happened a lot in most of the large scale productions of the 60's. Honestly the saddest thing of all is she is most likely going to be remembered far more more for accidentally pulling La La Land out of the envelope instead of Moonlight at that disastrous 2017 Academy Awards.

    Yeah I should have clarified "in film circles" when referring to F Murray Abraham because yes in terms of mainstream recognition he too is vastly underrated and it is unfortunate that he didn't get more roles from his Amadeus oscar win.
    Regarding Pryce it's funny you mention the contrast between British Shakespearean discipline acting styles and the more organic side that he brings to that background because if you look up footage of his performance of Hamlet earlier in his career, it is a DIFFERENT Hamlet that what you expect from less adventurous and courageous actors. Thanks for the feedback!

    Jean Simmons (the film actress, not the Kiss frontman)
    In a career spanning 7 decades (1944-2009), British born American actress Jean Simmons proved to be an accomplished and extremely versatile actor whose talent complemented her stunning looks. Drama, comedy, Shakespeare, sword and sandal epics, song and dance musicals and film noir femme fatales, Jean Simmons did them all with an ease and elegance unmatched in the history of film. In addition to motion pictures, Jean Simmons also had a long career in television.
    One of Jean Simmons greatest roles is her skilful portrayal of the psychotic seductress Diane Tremayne in the Otto Preminger film noir classic, Angel Face (1953). Like the film's doomed male anti-hero protagonist, Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum), the viewer is irresistibly drawn into Diane's evil web by her charm and beauty only to slowly realize, as the movie progresses, that this woman is not right in the head and that it might be a good idea if Frank stayed as far away from her as possible. Frank does eventually come to this conclusion but, unfortunately for both he and the demented Diane, it's already too late. While Robert Mitchum delivers one of his better understated performances, there is no doubt that it is Jean Simmons’ performance as Diane Tremayne along with Preminger's cool, atmospheric direction that makes Angel Face a great film.
    Joe Mankiewicz, director of Guys and Dolls (1955), the musical in which Simmons co-starred opposite Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, called Simmons "the dream...a fantastically talented and enormously underestimated girl. In terms of talent, Jean Simmons is so many heads and shoulders above most of her contemporaries, one wonders why she didn't become the great star she could have been".

      @EasternRomeOrthodoxy ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate when people call Shelley Duvall's character in The Shining "weak". Stephen King was probably the first one to make the criticism, because it was his story, his characters and he didn't like the way Kubrick portrayed them. While I can understand his frustration, I also think he needs to stfu too. Once you send your story out to be made into a movie, that's it. It's in someone else's hands under someone else's vision. Plus, King later went on to make his OWN miniseries adaption of The Shining and it sucked. No one liked it. Except me. I watch both versions, regularly, back to back. But I'm pretty sure I'm the only one.
    Back to Duvall. Her character is trying to hold onto her family. She's trying to support her moody husband through recovery from alcoholism, and trying to support her son who seems to have some psychological affliction of his own. She wants to protect them both. But when placed in an unimaginable situation, she has to choose between them. I think that's VERY strong. Most people would piss their pants and die.
    Throw in the real life stressors/abuse Duvall had to endure while even making this movie, and I think she deserves all the props.
    I'm glad you mentioned Sissy Spacek as well. I need more of both their movies in my life.

      @tomnorton4277 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm willing to bet that every single one of the people who called Wendy weak would completely break down if they were in her situation. They just like to delude themselves into thinking they would handle it with more dignity, intelligence and courage which says more about their egos than Shelley Duvall's performance.

    • @rebeccassweetmusic4632
      @rebeccassweetmusic4632 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomnorton4277 Those people love to get on their high horse and say that, but they would not be able to handle Jack's twisted manipulation, gaslighting, and murderous/psychotic tendencies. I used to think Shelley's performance was annoying, but now that I have learned more about marital abuse, I think her reactions are a lot more realistic than people realize. Plus, fear can make you do dumb things sometimes. So, I get some of the complaints, but I wouldn't say I like it, specifically when women call her weak, too. You would react EXACTLY like Shelley's Wendy in this film. In real life, there are abusive situations where power dynamics are at play, and it makes things hard for survivors to leave. That hotel is a symbol for a victim(s) that are trapped in an abusive situation.

    Always considered Eric Stoltz as underrated. His range is profound. In PF his character is basic divided into two people. One, the cool calm and collected seller who has this transcendent knowledge about this magical stuff he's selling. Then the other which manifests into a jumpy and paranoid guy who gets placed into a chaotic situation. I remember first watching it, and being wholly impressed with this transition. He also did an incredibly naturalistic performance in Killing Zoe. He seems to have that cool quality in his performances. I'm trying to find stuff he's done recently.

    I was watching Naomi Watts in The Impossible today. She was beyond great. She was beaten by Jennifer Lawrence's ok performance at the Oscars. That's being underrated.

    Jonathan Pryce is indeed Shakespearean in style, given that he was one of the great Hamlets on the British stage, as a young actor. I seem him as a modern Gielgud in that way.

    Walter Neff is too slick for his own good in Double Indemnity. That's what made Fred MacMurray so perfect for the part. He is in a way putting on an act. Not always the best approach but suits that movie. I'd say MacMurray is underrated. His performance as Sheldrake in The Apartment is hilarious.

    Brendan Gleeson, Every performance is great in their own way, subtle actor never takes too much the spotlight where it seems he's over doing it. Calvary is the best performance I think.

    @4:15: F. Murray Abraham himself thinks it's actually American actors and other trans-Atlantic English-speaking actors who do stage performance better, and that starts with how to interpret Shakespeare!
    Because they know how to be in love with the stories they're playing rather than simply being in love with their own performances, which is what he accuses British actors of doing.
    I've also heard Kelsey Grammar say something similar.

      PS: For the last several years, F. Murray Abraham can often be found joyously yelling over Zoom interviews! I'm surprised you're not up to his work, as you both seem to like both stage and science-fiction more than I do, both of which are genres he never shies away from!

    I really like Riley Keough but in my opinion her entire performance in Zola feels like a false note. I get that it’s so supposed to be satirical but the dialect she puts on is so over the top that the satire rings extremely hollow to me.

    Matt Damon. 3 Oscar noms and none of them for imo his best work (Ripley, The Informant, True Grit). Definitely the modern Cotten in terms of range (no one is talking about how he plays three totally different versions of the same main character in The Last Duel). Great example of talent being underappreciated because he isnt ACTING all the time.
    Also so many gen x actresses-molly parker, carla gugino, robin wright, jennifer connelly, juliette lewis,parker posey, noomi rapace, rosario dawson, eva green, every actress from twin peaks etc-that hollywood doesnt know what to do with

    If actors really want to learn their craft they should look to Spencer Tracy. Usually understated and always human he inhabits the character. We all know actors that chew up the scenery. Spencer never did.

I felt it was a very mediocre film but I couldn't stop watching it because of Spencer Tracy's acting. I was forever hooked.

    Really? You think Fred MacMurray has a higher profile than Joseph Cotten? Now I'm curious what circles you travel in, because outside of Disney adults and the hardcore Billy Wilder fanatics, I don't hear discussion of MacMurray at all.
    There are a lot of examples I mulled over when you posed this question, and one of them that ought to be mentioned now is Harry Andrews. He had a decent career in the 50s and 60s, including working for John Huston (on "Moby Dick") and Sidney Lumet (on "The Hill"). But it's his vocal performance as General Woundwort in "Watership Down" that establishes him as a character actor of immense power. That performance is oozing with villainy in a way that makes Christoph Waltz's Col. Landa look like a little girl.
