  • Billy Eichner joins Jon and Tommy to talk about his new voting initiative Glam Up The Midterms, as well as Parkland, activism in the age of Trump, and Marco Rubio. Plus we take some shots at Lovett.
Billy Eichner, Funny Or Die, and your favorite hometown heroes are joining forces for one singular purpose: getting you to turn up and vote in the midterm elections. Let’s face it. Young people have never been excited about midterm elections. Only 12% of youth voters turned out in 2014. That’s embarrassing, America. So, Billy and his friends are going to do what they do best. They are going to make the midterm elections an event that you cannot miss. They will Glam Up The Midterms through in-district events, videos, stunts, rallies, and get-out-the-vote actions all over the country. Join the campaign at GlamUpTheMidterms.com to register to vote and sign-up to receive action alerts.

You are not "old" and jaded. You are still young idealist. Teens need your "cynicism" . Wisdom is a combination of idealism and realism. Cynicism is an unavoidable ingredient in developing wisdom and realism in our thinking.

When was this recorded? Four years ago? Parkland is distant memory to most. Did I miss something?
This midterm year also has some important statewide and, even, district elections.
In any case, Uvalde is the current horror that needs to be completely exploited in the Texas gubernatorial election, along with the diminution of female autonomy and voter suppression. It would be amazing: a beacon of hope amid the insanity. Beto O'Rourke has the education, empathy and honesty to steer Texas towards American constitutional values and away from divisiveness.
The midterms are of varying interest because the vast majority of incumbents win reelection. Fewer than 50 seats in the House can reasonably be said to be in play. Same with the Senate (6 in the current election cycle). The increasingly enfeebled Chuck Grassley and Diane Feinstein both regard the senate a life tenured position.
The gubernatorial elections in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan should be electoral hotbeds, enough to get millenials to participate. Secretaries of State hold too much power to certify or decertify elections and many are being contested by 2020 election deniers - some of whom have already assumed the posture of 2022 election deniers. These delusional people need to be kept out of office and Democrats elected to fill those offices. All offices. The GCoupP has left the house and moved to the asylum. (Please turn off their lights.) In Georgia, the deplorable Brian Kemp, whose unwillingness to recuse himself from the management of the last election - when he was Secretary of State - against Stacy Abrams, disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters and his continued attempts to reduce and limit voter participation should rouse all who believe in democratic ideals to vote for Ms Abrams. In Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer should win easily, but don't be overly confident. It will still require voters to turn out and vote sanely, not something that has been seen a lot in rural parts of Michigan. The believers in the Big Lie are running a "strong" candidate for Secretary of State who is as delusional as Mastriano, the chosen gubernatorial candidate in Pennsylvania running against the worthy Democrat Josh Shapiro. Pennsylvania also has the "exciting" race between Federman and Oz.
And start gubernatorial impeachment proceedings in Florida: deSantos has demonstrably misused public funds to transport 48 misled undocumented immigrants from Texas to Mass. Since they were federal funds earmarked for Covid-19 management, I would think federal charges could be brought, as well.

So, great! Sign up more young people! Educate them! Wonderful! But also, it is a good idea to find ways to stop the "football game" attitudes about politics. This is not about "our team winning" but about helping our country AS A WHOLE, that includes women, children, the elderly, as well as liberals, conservatives etc etc - Respect one another and include all age groups. We boomers are also interested in stopping the gun violence. OF COURSE!

Get some women and BOOMERS on this show. Noam Chomsky, for instance. We need some deeper voices and some diversity on this show if it is going to keep my attention. You guys are sitting here looking in the mirror and talking.
