Jeep Cherokee Project Fuel Pump Replacement (Ep.2)

  • We got this Jeep XJ for free last year, but we are finally getting back to it! We were fairly sure last time that it just needed a new fuel pump to get it running, so this time we are prepared with a new one to install. Once we do get the fuel pump replaced, we will do what we have to in order to get it running and take it for a test drive!
    This will most likely be a long-term series, with infrequent episodes, but updates will continue!
    Date of Filming: April 14th, 2018
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):
    0:01 Glass Hero - Bird Creek
    1:55 Grassy Hill - Huma-Huma
    9:32 Pomade - Silent Partner
    13:15 Fargo - Riot
    16:22 The Chase - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena

    You know that AMC Inline-6 is a great engine when it works so well after sitting for years, without an oil change, etc. Just few fixes and fresh gas and it goes! That's the best Jeep engine of the bunch :)

    The oil pump pressure bypass valve was stuck and needed that little rev to get it freed up. It's always a good idea to keep a close eye in the oil pressure gauge when you are getting an engine running that has not been running in a long time.

    You blew a huge chunk of sludge through your oil pump. You got lucky, and probably did a year's worth of damage to that engine in the 10 minutes before that happened.

  • @Josh-bu4zx
    @Josh-bu4zx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 4.0L just never dies, mine has 254k miles and still running like a champ. Also changed my fuel pump not long ago. Haven't had any issues with it for the 2 years I've owned it. My dads recently went over 300k miles and its head finally cracked, had it rebuilt and it runs great.

    • @57brc
      @57brc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Where did you buy the fuel pump? Mine needs a new fuel pump too, it's a 96 cherokee 4.0

  • @jeep146
    @jeep146 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My Jeep is similar 1996. I have changed three of them in the last 20 years. It's easier if you lay like you did towards the driver side and past the axle that way you can prop yourself up in a recline position. Disconnect the wiring harness, remove the clamp and hose at the tank. Put the fuel hose thru one of the brackets on top by the tank to keep the fuel from draining. The whole unit can now be pulled and worked on a bench. Old fuel should be ditched and the tank cleaned as much as you can. If the tank is rusted it will screw your pump after several months as the strainer will get clogged. The oil pressure sensor is cheap and can be changed easily.

I have bought a new track bar, steering stabilizer, tie rods, new axles (i wanted the 3.55 gear ratio instead of 3.07 the comes with the 5-speeds) and all the control arm bushings. Ball joints seem good, but they're next. what else could cause the death wobble?

    235/75r15 tires are a common "upgrade" on these Jeeps because they are easier to find. Search Craigslist or your online Classified of choice, you'll find 235s all the time, but 215 are pretty rare.

    • @beardo81
      @beardo81 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the_young_misfits_8114 I didn't say that. I said it is common to go with a 235/75r15 because they are easier to find used. For me, at the time, it was significantly cheaper to get used 235/75r15 tires over buying new stock tires. I didn't see an adverse affect on the jeep. the 235 make your speedometer read slightly wrong, but not enough in my area to worry about.

      Seen plenty of rust haha, but the underside isn't exactly great. Floor and frame rail rust holes on unibody vehicles especially skeeve me out, too. It's also a bit of a concern when there isn't a tailpipe!

      When practical, we do! But we were not prepared enough and did not bring adequate protection for this particular job. We will have to improve on that in the future.

    best way to get those lock rings off of a fuel tank is to hit it with a torch for a minute or 2

    • @frotobaggins7169
      @frotobaggins7169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i assume this is a joke, using a torch to open a gas tank. but just in case, don't ever do that. also don't ever use a vacuum to get the gas out.

      Fuzzy Dice Projects leaf spring lift, Ive played around with doing them before on other vehicles. but never actually completed the job

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Add-a-leaf or new spring packs? Either way that is a straight forward job if you're looking for an extra 1-3" or so of lift. Beyond that and you might end up with some other headaches from components that don't reach anymore. What are your concerns about attempting it?

      It is! I don't know about Cherokees specifically, but some people prefer 2WD models of vehicles over 4WD for various reasons, so there is still value to them one way or another.
