@@ryanrink2641 A TJ in the condition of the XJ in the video is nowhere near $10k. My well optioned TJ Sahara 4.0/5 speed with low miles and new axles, steering, and top, _might_ be worth $10k. I wouldn't pay $2k for a rusty XJ either, but... maybe that's your market? TJs _are_ worth more than XJs, but that will be true when you go to sell it too and they're waaay easier to work on. Food for thought.

XJs and my AMC Eagle both share quiet a bit of DNA... So much so that XJ springs interchange without much effort, so that's what I did. When I did it, I put add-a-leafs in them for about $30 and it raised the rear height of my wagon by about 1.5". If Rob is trying to be as cheap about everything as it appears he wants to, go grab some used XJ springs that are better than yours, put add-a-leafs in them, and extend the shackles or axle block lift it to get the rest of the height he's after. The nice thing about going that way is that it still rides pretty much stock because 90% of the spring still is stock. Also of note... My Eagle has a 258 in it and the _only_ exhaust (no cat, no tail pipe, nothing) is a 24" "glass pack" thrush muffler and it's actually not all that ridiculously loud. I think if he added a $20 Thrush behind what he's already got that he may end up happy with the sound of it. Especially if he's able to get a bend or two in it to kick it out from under the body. That should cut down on the drone a ton.

i’m currently working on trying to get my hands on a nearly identical xj to this one, a moss green ‘96, except the one i’m looking at is a manual. this video series has made me even more excited about it, even though it’s one of the weirder model years
my grommets were shot too so i took them out of my parts truck, seemed much better, a year later leaking when i go uphill etc or fill it up smell gas so back down again she comes now w/ new grommets , thanks for the video you are the only one who showed the grommet part, i also have several repair videos that i have learned over 20 years of driving them so scope it out if you have time, thanks
Don't cheap out on the suspension for the Jeep, buy new springs, do it right, will cost you far less in the long term. There is something to be said about spending a bit more now, to save a lot more in the future. And not just save money, but time as well. That is a lesson I had to learn the hard way. If the vehicle is a daily driver, it is absolutely a must not to go super cheap.
Gotta do the s10 bastard pack lift. Came out super sweet on my 90 xj. Use the s leafs under the original xj main, its super easy. Run mj (Commanche) rear shocks, YJ front shocks with factory XJ front springs on 3" poly spacers from amazon, and YJ front brake hoses, I used the chevy Silverado rear brake hose, it had plenty of droop travel. It came out with a solid 3" lift and great stance. Goodyear wrangler t/a's from amazon (31"s $300-ish delivered) rounded it out perfectly.
The reason those struts are so strong is they only make struts for the 97+ which had metal hatches that weigh allot more where the 84-96 XJ had a fiberglass hatch
Keep it simple with a modest 2 inch lift. When you do 3+ inches you have to start doing other stuff and you sacrifice the ride/drive quality. I love the green paint, it still has shine. Wetsand the hood and then clear coat or polish it.
You're right about all jeeps having the rear spring problem. If you want a cheap fix buy Hellwig Ez-550 helper springs and clamp them to the rear of the leaf's and tighten the u bolts all the way down. Lifted mine up to stock height and lasted the 6 years until I sold it. Never sagged again or bottomed out.
if the fuel reads wrong it means you put the pump in wrong :) done that myself a few times. if its wrong the sender wont lift right and it wont read correctly. since you get a reading at full tank it means everything else works. so remove the tank, refit the pump and voila
Good on you guys. I just watched budget builds and they seem interested in becoming the next whistlingdiesel and that mentality ain't for me. I walked for miles as a young man broke and didn't have a rig. Pisses me off to see kids burning up tires just cause they are near free or were free. Anyway, fixing a jeep seems to be no end for most as they have so much rust and wiring issues. When they work, they are quite nice. Hope to see more rigs saved
Good luck with the leaf springs the bolts just spin in the eyes and you have to grind through the eyes of the leaf springs grinding them out will save you a lot of time!!!
I've taken one of those XJ doors apart, they've got metal rods with plastic clips on the ends that attach the handles to the lock mechanisms on the ends of the door.
Guys, this jeep is so similar to my '95 2 door. I really want to shoot you guys some pictures of it if you're interested. It sat in a field for 8+ years. I fixed it up last summer and it's my daily driver now, used to be a northern OH car.
Oh I had a too-loud car like this around year 2000. Any time I drove it for more than 30 minutes, I would have to wear earplugs that I bought from a welding shop, they were the heavy duty earplugs intended for people working in really noisy environments. I'd still be deaf for 10 minutes after arriving at my destination. Ahh, I loved that car.

Adding a tip off that muffler that exists the rear of the vehicle will reduce drone too. Plus, it’s safer because all those exhaust fumes are exiting the under side of the vehicle.
I’m pretty sure that the filler neck extending into the tank was a safety feature. When filling liquid gas can pickup a static charge. If that static charged gas falls through the vapor it can ignite. Like the old tank, they build gasoline tanks on boats and ships that way for just that reason. That said this Jeep will kill you a million other ways before the gas tank blows up.
Rough country makes a good short arm 3Inch lift kit with a leaf pack (not add a leaf) for a fair price. I picked one up for my 97 XJ and its been nice. When you lift these things though you gotta pay some attention to the pinion angle for the rear drive shaft. Spacer kit for T case cross-member or SYE and new drive shaft.
Just hit the JY for some leafs and bastard pack your own new leafs, that'll stay with the theme you guys are going for. I did all this stuff back in the day to my 89 and my 01. My 01 is still in my driveway today but not as my DD. Might have to get it back on the road after seeing this.
Not sure if you made it this far but if you add a tailpipe to that muffler and get it past the body a touch it will help reduce the drone some. That is why most car manufacturers extend past the body FWIW.
I like(?) the sketchy exhaust, but I'm curious - do they sell some flexible exhaust pipe in your area? Not the flimsy stuff meant for home clothing dryers - I mean for cars...you could finish that off & maybe clamp it to the rear bumper. Other than that, it looks like the efforts made to keep the Jeep going are paying off.
Rubicon express lift and fox 2.0s it came with new leaf springs and coils worth every penny on my xj still had a great ride and performance was great off-road there's no point in re using any of that it will just sag again in a few months I learned the hard way on my previous xj
As for the radio not working, mine had a problem that caused only static. Simple fix. Under the passenger side dash, you should find a thick black cable. This is the antenna cable, and chances are the extension adapter snapped apart from the spring inside of it. Remove the spring, reconnect the cables, and that should fix it. If not, you might have a damaged antenna.
His is in so much better shape then my buddy’s 😂😂😂😂😂and my buddy day drives his 216k miles and floor pan rusted through and he’s took it 14 hours away 4.0 is a good motor tbh
sending unit may be for the wrong year, that could be why you fuel gauge isn't reading correctly. you would have to check the ohms for full and empty for both the new and old sending unit.
How are you guys getting away with dailying historic tagged vehicles? I live in Western Maryland myself, and I've actually been busted for dailying a historic tagged vehicle, so I just don't even risk it anymore.

A good thing to try is to bend the float arm down to make it float higher at lower levels to make it more accurate

You need to bend the metal arm on the fuel sending unit float down. That will fix your fuel gauge problem.

My 91 XJ never reads full on the gas gauge. Even a full tank only reads 3/4. It’s a Jeep Thing. Lol 😂
