96 XJ Classic Fuel Pump Assembly

  • Replacing the fuel pump assembly on a 96 Jeep XJ Classic. The issue was that after driving for about twenty minutes on a hot day when the tank was at half full or below, the jeep would just sputter out and die, and then after about 30/45 minutes of sitting, it would fire up with no problem. We looked at a bunch of other things and this was our last resort option. Turns out it fixed the issue. The pump motor must have been getting hot and shorting out.
    This is how to remove the pump assembly, which includs the pump, fuel pick-up and fuel level sending unit. You can get individual pieces to replace but with not knowing how old the assembly was I decided to replace the entire assembly. Like I state in the video this method will work in any of the older body style XJ's that have a metal tank. The pump assembly has minor differences from year to year so be sure to verify your year and model of XJ and the current configuration that you have in the tank. If you are not sure just crawl underneath and see if you can identify the wires and the output from the tank on the forward side of the tank. If you cannot see it or the tank is plastic, you will need to drop the tank and the method of replacement is different. ** When working around fuel vapors be extremely cautions and have a fire extinguisher close by! **
