i realize that this is almost exactly five years late and it's not likely hank or john will read this, but i wanted to say thanks. i use this video when i have to come out (particularly to older family members) because it explains gender/sexuality as a spectrum better than i can articulate sometimes. of course attitudes have changed, we've learned new things in the last five years alone, but still. at the end of showing this to someone, i usually then say "and it's EVEN MORE complicated than that, but you get the idea." anything beyond gay or straight is a new concept to some people, i appreciate how this video breaks it down efficiently and in a way that doesn't condescend to a viewer who might not know uch about the subject. so thanks again. (also, my grandmother asked me to email this link to her so she could show her friends, "the fast-talking guy, i like him")
I use this in my (extremely) rural town to explain things to people and it helps them make sense of things. It usually ends with "I guess God made ALL kinds of people..." I usually just respond with "Yes. Yes, they did." I was initially shocked by how accepting they were but I work with it and those biases have dissolved quite a bit on both my side and theirs.
Holy sh1t. This is ten years old and is mentioning more concepts than a lot of LGBTQ+ organisations even do regularily. Intersex people, gender as an infinit continuum even addressing how there is not only the option "neither" but also "both", aswell as different levels of intensity, asexuality, differentiating romantic attraction from sexual attraction from sexual behaviour, the possibility of it being fluid and changing over time. I am absoulutely impressed by the amount of info you packed into this and despite how much of this ten years ago was mostly shared in smaller corners of the internet. Still great content.
Yeah, NEMO. I just saw it today. It's in the 'Teen Facts' section, which has some explanations on sex and all sorts of things. Surprised me seeing Hank's face pop up with Dutch subtitles.
med school kid here, trust me: there is no such thing as basic biology. only complex biology. it doesn’t have to make sense to you, you don’t even have to learn about it. just don’t be cruel to those who do.
It is *so* important to give kids the vocabulary (words AND meanings) to effectively understand, verbalize, and express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas (adults too, but we're talking about the youngins now) I hate that that education is becoming so strictly forbidden in the eyes of the law in so many places. It baffles the f outta me that I am readily given the words to express my own identity, and that that identity is accepted no matter where I go, but other people are being denied even the education to understand and communicate their own. I haven't even been out of bed an hour and the world has me in a whole-ass mood 🙃
If it weren't for Hank, I would never have gotten a good grade in AP Bio. He's definitely more informative than high school curriculum. This video in particular actually helped me a lot personally. As a heterosexual white male, with little to nothing in the way of physiological "quirks", information about sexual orientation was kind of something I kind of had to seek out. I got the basics, and understood it well enough, but I was always confused when someone referred to a "spectrum". This really cleared it up for me. So thank you, Hank.
+Tapiokapuddin Our school doesn't even have a GSA or an approachable member of staff who is able to tell us about any of it. Not even a page on the website. LITERALLY nothing.
I had to go to TH-cam and check the date on this video (It was hyperlinked for an assignment in my Social Problems class) and I was shocked to see that this came out in 2013 and he was acknowledging aromantic and asexual orientations :)
Honestly, being asexual and aromantic (maybe VERY demiromantic, not sure yet) can feel pretty lonely, but I’m glad there are so many great people out there like Hank to help myself and others understand each other.
That picture is me! Somewhat male brain but female anatomy and presenting. Far more attracted to women but most of the girls I dated were interested in me for attention from guys, and after my heart was broken, I temp swore off women and wound up falling in love with a man. So I may look straight but I assure you, I am NOT.
Im crying because he included nonbinary and a lot of people just skip over it or don't believe in it and it warms my heart because its so easy to get stuck in the thought cycle of the world doesnt think you exist. Its just nice to be validated. Especially by someone with such a strong voice (meaning speaking out about these things to a considerably large following)
every single time i see one of these videos that was made 10 or more years ago, i prepare to be disappointed. i get ready for one of my idols to say something deplorable because it was normal back then. but you prove me wrong every single time, because you are genuinely amazing people at your core. you were both cool before it was cool to be cool. from the bottom of my heart, thanks for being so cool hank & john.
So this video just popped up in my homepage. I watched it about a million times in 2013-14, when I was a closeted trans teen worried wether I'll ever be loved as my true self. It's been a minute. I'm currently out of the closet and transitioning. I was blessed with a lovely, supportive family and awesome friends. Thank you so much for this video, Hank. It meant a lot to me and still does.
I’m so happy for you! I’m a young trans person slowly coming out to people, and going to tell my dad soon. My mom was the first person I’ve told, and she’s been good. That will get both my parents in, and hopefully I can get onto blockers soon. Have a happy trans life🏳️⚧️💜 Update a few days later: My dad is now knowing of it and supportive. He’s trying to help which is great!
this is not ment to be offensive, I just want to learn with asexuality - is it that you can romantically like/love/want to be with a person, but you would never have sex or is it that you aren't attracted at all or neither I'm just curious
asexuality means that you don't experience any sexual attraction; not related at all to romantic attraction! and not all asexual people are averse to the idea of having sex either, so they still might do that, whether it's for the pleasure of their partner or another reason.
Wat. These ideas aren't new... There is archeological evidence that many cultures had some variation of transgender and gayness is nothing new, ask the Romans.
I love this video because it explains the difference between biological sex and gender. A lot of people seem to think that gender is sex and that's simply not the case. Sex is what you're born as, gender is what you identify as.
Five years later, people are actively resisting this knowledge and running political campaigns accordingly, leading to loads of attacks on human rights
@@waytoobiased Yeah as a young trans person especially, I feel lucky to live in a state in the us that has good protections. I feel so bad for other trans people in certain states, it sounds depressing.
@@ghog__ Yeah, I’m in one of certain states, and although I’m cis, many of my friends and family who are trans are having a rough go of it right now. Luckily, there are lots of good people out there as well. I’m trying to be one myself. Stay safe out there!
3:30 in, you said something that resonated with my very being. "What's really important is that we trust ourselves and we understand ourselves and we love and respect ourselves and we grant that same understanding and respect to the people around us." Too often we find ourselves being judgmental of others, and more often than that we are judgmental of ourselves. "I don't like who I am," or "I don't like who they are," or "I have a general dislike for the preferences of others," defines our culture, and it's a travesty. Love yourself, love everyone you meet, and let go of petty differences. The world doesn't have to be as bleak as you make it out to be, folks, and this man gets it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for your wisdom, understanding, and encouragement. I look forward to hearing more of what you have to say.
This was litteraly the most accurant and easiest explanation I've heard on the subject. Though - it covers sexuality AND sex/gender. Sexuality and sex have nothing to do with one another.
I was raised and still live in an anti lgbt christain household. Thanks to amazing people like you and other LGBT people and Allys, I am no longer homophobic or transphobic. The hate against the LGBT community in the Christian and religious community has pushed be to become an atheist. Even though religion is not something I see as good anymore, I still have HUGE respect for religious LGBT allys and religious people who don't use their religion to justify horrible things. Thank you Hank and John for all the things you do.
Simply LGBT is delusional and Christianity doesn't accept it. That's why. Maybe certain people are being hateful but y'all LGBTQers are pushing it too.
This is my first ever sycophantic message to a youtuber, and I genuinely hope it's read by Hank or John. In what must have amounted by now to months' worth of surfing youtube I have never come across a more worthwhile and valuable set of channels as the ones run by you guys. You are both incredibly kind and thoughtful and passionate, and the amount of effort and time you must put in to try and ensure the youtube community continues to receive a high level of education is astounding. It is an absolute joy for someone who studied theology at university to hear phrases like 'all dichotomies are false dichotomies' and 'no religion is monolithic' espoused over and over. I am thrilled and grateful to be able to have access to your content, thank you very much indeed.
As an intersex person i feel like Hank may not have noticed... His definition of sex was actually far from an accurate one. Theres five factors, not just reproductive organs, that factor into the sex but there is also an observed or even assigned sex; which is what us intersex folks often receive based solely on our reproductive organs while ignorin chromosomes and hormones and otherwise. Biological sex is not simply whats downstairs, even before includin folks that have had surgery downstairs
Years later scishow made a video about being intersex which goes very much into this, and I believe he hosted that episode, so he definitely has learnt more about sex from then :)
@@Colonies_Dev Assigned Sex at Birth isnt based on your biological sex; im intersex, that is my biological sex, not male nor female Lookin at the external genitals of a person to determine their sex is not gonna get it right all the time
Damn man this video from 10 years ago has never been more relevant than it is now! In less than 4 minutes Hank broke down the whole thing and made it easy to explain. You are a marvel Hank! ❤
I don't know why it took me two and a half years to find this video, but now I have. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Maybe now I'll be able to understand what the hell is happening inside my brain and/or other relevant organs. One day. Thank you.
***** no, it is not. There is no evidence of such nonsense existing, so please spare us the prayer and the preaching. Why do you religious psychos have to shit over everything with your Bible.
You know, that this conversation has been happening for a long time, when you find a video about it, 10 freaking years ago. "This stuff has only been happening in the past 4-5 years... People didn't care about this 10 or 20 years ago..." Clearly they did. And clearly they have understood that almost everything is a spectrum, like we have been saying.
It is appreciative of Hank to mention "romantic orientation" because I know individuals who are females but strongly desire intimate relationships with other females (where physical relationship sonot play a role at all).It is normal for a person to yearn for attention from other people of same sex but a non sexual one though.
+Jared Greenwald I just want to clear this up- there are four main types of attraction I'm aware of, and I've done a bit of research. your four are romantic, platonic, sexual, and aesthetic. Here is a quick breakdown: Sexual: wanting to have sex with someone, finding them "hot" or "sexy" Romantic: wanting a romantic relationship with someone- this can be defined many ways but usually involves cuddling, hugging, maybe kissing. Platonic: a desire to be friends with someone Aesthetic: not necessarily finding someone hot or cute, but appreciating that they look nice It can be hard to differentiate between romantic/sexual for a lot of people, but think of romantic as wanting to date someone and sexual as wanting to have sex with someone. I'm asexual, and I've done quite a bit of research on this. AVEN is a good resource if you want more information!
@@MicahBuzanANIMATION That's religion you're talking about which is irrelevant. This video is about gender and sexuality, which is part of sociology, anthropology, biology, and psychology.
In under four minutes you have perfectly explained concepts which many unfortunate individuals may go their entire lives never understanding or respecting.
***** Male and female parts don't determine whether you're a man or a woman. Man and woman are social constructs. There are female/male lizards and cows, but they don't have a concept of men or women.
^ So much this, and moreover, arguing "because reality" is pretty much a self-destructive argument, because by the nature of being bound by our subjective senses and thoughts, everyone lives in their own unique reality. In the reality ***** comes from, it's perfectly okay to disrespect someone because you think they're weird. In the reality I come from, it's unacceptable to disrespect anyone for actions or traits which do not bring harm to other humans.
You're talking about biology. Everyone else is talking about psychology. Male and female biology is entirely different from male and female psychology. The concept of man and woman come from how our minds perceive the concept of human. Someone who perceives themselves as the opposite sex is not harming anyone by acting on that self-perception, and should therefore be fairly respected as psychologically that gender. Gender and sex are not the same thing. Sex is what biology says, gender is what psychology says. If a person's brain tells them they're female, then that's their gender. The end.
***** It's funny, cause I was born in reality, I am real, yet I am a transwoman. People knew it from the beginning as well. People could tell that I wasn't a cisgender/heterosexual male all my life...but then again, as you said, that isn't reality is it? /sarcasm. But on to true reality. People like you are the ones that keep people like me held down just low enough under the proverbial water to allow me to drown but be able to see the sunlight that I am missing out on. With my rights being limited/taken away due to people thinking that "derpderp gender=sex" and the fact that I face the fear of violence and the possibilities of being a social pariah on a daily, as well as having to face issues that you will never have to even think of in your life time, topped off with the social and emotional structures that tear down a transperson mentally due to the fact that I was born mismatched....yeh, the thinking like what you are perceiving needs to stop in society, period. It literally is killing people out there, have a nice day.
When you have so little hobbies and personality and identity that a video about fake made up gender theory makes you emotional. Man, so this is what happens when teens grow up in an Era where instead of hanging out with friends and developing an identity, they just sit at home all day, browsing tumblr. 🤔 Enjoy your upcoming identity crisis by age 24 like everyone else who's fallen for this myth.
I had always assumed that none of the LGBTQ+ identities (except ally) would ever apply to me since I didn't really understand them in grade school, went to a Catholic high school, and started college during the pandemic. But then something interesting happened: I applied for a job and absent mindedly checked off male on the form, which made me realize that I have always blindly accepted the gender which aligned with my biological sex. This was January of 2024 (the same year I'm writing this), and although my gender exploration journey has been very much stalled by studying abroad in Japan, my program is about to end. It's time to come home, get therapy, and discover myself.
ON POINT. the separation of sex, gender, sexual preference, romantic preference, behavior, and gender roles (along with intensity of the traits) was great and not at all confusing. I am a biological girl that is gender fluid (I feel like either gender at different times for periods of time), who is attracted romantically to women and non-binary people, and sexually to all genders. this was very helpful, thank you!
Out of curiosity, what do you feel like when identify as gender-female as opposed to gender-male. Is it something as culturally linked as you like football when you feel gender-male or is it deeper than that?
NOCDIB I would say that it can be a bit subtle, but it mainly has to do with how i choose to express myself that day, like through clothes, body language, etc. And if, for example, the clothing of the opposite gender is brought up, I will feel negative towards it. Also: funny, but it is really hard to decide on hair. At the moment, mine is boy-short, but sometimes I'm dying for it to be long, other times I like it. lol.
I'm a man with the soul of a Warrior-Turkey, i'm Quasi-dodecahedron-gendered, and by the logic of this video, you MUST validate and accept me, to acheive orgasm I must reap the lives of at least a half-dozen children and bath in their innocent blood.
Keith Filibeck when what you are actually hurts other people then you have a problem. If what you are prevents you from living your life then you have a problem. If being able to define what you are gives you a better idea of who you are and the ability to function through life then you are fine the way you are.
Bless you, sir. I've become increasingly.... confused? No, not confused, maybe frustrated over the years. I identify as a male (male assignment at birth as well), but hadn't considered a spectrum to explain some of the inconsistencies between identifying male and my personal sexual and romantic preferences. I am not attracted to individuals identifying as male, but I am attracted to people identifying as female regardless of their sex. As forward thinking as I've always considered myself to be, I struggled to reconcile this. This simple presentation somehow managed to cement some of my disjointed thoughts together to help it make a little more sense. This is what I needed.
I would say this is an OK version but not what it should be taught at schools. He says sex and gender are different but a quick google search says otherwise but sexual identity is OK but to just say your another gender without looking the part is raising
Red flags like the target change room fiasco, so if your gonna say your "gender fluid" don't use whatever you want, you have to look at what the rest are gonna feel so a single toilet stall is a good way to fix the bathroom or change room sitchuwation witch alows any one in the process of change or non binary can use. And insisting that "cis" is a gender or "bi" is wrong since those are sexual preferences.
Ten years later and I'm still using this in delivering professional development education. It's still comprehensive yet concise, still framed beautifully, and still very relevant.
I'm a sometimes-feminine, sometimes-masculine, bisexual woman who is biologically male and in a straight relationship. I think this video is pretty cool. It's so extremely well put and I'm tempted to link this to people whenever they just can't understand trans people. You're the best vlogbrothers!
You are a woman that is in a straight relationship. But in the same time, you are a man. So are you in a relationship with what? Wait + and - is - so - + - which is + So you are in a relationship with a woman? Which means you are just lesbian
10 years after I used this in my BA thesis I thought I'd check how well it held up, and this is still one of the most simple, straightforward and nonjudgemental explanations for people new to these concepts I have heard. Thank you, Hank.
When you assume someones gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, straight..etc. You, unknowingly, attach certain stigmas you and others hold over said orientation. So I'd rather just do as I please and not have an orientation placed upon me. I don't need to identify with certain buzzwords for you to ascertain some information about me that isn't necessarily true whatsoever.
That's not quite how it works. Whether you want to be something or not doesn't magically change what you actually are. For example: if you're a man who's only attracted to other men you're a homosexual. What other stigma is attached to these "buzzwords" is irrelevant, it doesn't change the fact that (when used correctly) they apply to almost everyone.
Saying Homosexual, Heterosexual, etc. Is faster than listing every possible orientation to the smallest spec. We would be here all day if he was like "Biological males that identify more with female mannerisms attracted to biologically males, and Biological females attracted to biological males who identify more with female mannerisms..."etc. x1000.
personwhoesrandom123 I think the color spectrum analogy applies very well here. Even though at no point is it possible to say "this is where red ends and pink begins" with any degree of integrity, there is a point on the scale where something is defiantly red and defiantly pink, so we draw a box around "red" and "pink" and pretend the gradient in between doesn't exist.
To all the homophobics: Not only -homo-sapiens are known for a specie that has homosexual individuals. In over 150 different species (ducks, cats, dogs, lions, tigers, horses, etc.) homosexual individuals have been found. There are two homosexual ducks near my house right now. Those two male ducks are always near each other and sometimes they even fuck. Humans never looked at homosexuality before. They thought it was strange because most of the people couldn't fall in love with the same gender. Anyways, I consider it natural because many wild animals (you know, those living things ouside. In the nature) have gay individuals. And explain the definition of 'normal' to me. I think it is normal to listen to nightcore while playing battlefield at any moment it is possible. Many people don't think that that is normal. But for me it is. That means 'normal' is not 'normal'. It is not 'normal' to be gay. But it isn't abnormal or wrong either.
***** If a gay couple acts the same as a hetro couple, then there is nothing disgusting and annoying. If they expose it a lot and if they want to show everyone they are a gay couple, then it is annoying. If they walk hand in hand, then there is nothing disgusting. A little kiss every once in a while is also normal. It is disgusting if people almost have sex on the street. No matter if they are gay or not. One can not be a majority with everything. You are currently a minority because the majorty thinks there is nothing wrong about homosexuality.
niklavs skuaj Indeed. TreeroyJ, I do not completely agree with you. You have a point though. (I do not agree, nor do I disagree..) A person can kill someone. But they can choose not to because people will loose their loved ones if they do. People can rape someone. But they can choose not to because it will traumatize those people. People can be gay. But they can not choose to fall in love with the other gender. They can choose not to show it, but I assume that that is hard.
TreeroyJ Your point is a better way of addressing that argument, as it deconstructs the idea that "natural" is by default "good". I like it. Animiles Have you ever tried not loving someone you've fallen in love with? Give it a go and come back later.
I do my best to understand the whole gender thing. It just seems that the whole idea is to include everybody (which is good) by creating countless labels and identities. Wouldn't it just make more sense to kind of disparage the whole social construct of what makes a man a man and what makes a woman a woman? Oppose the system as a whole
The whole ideia of Woman and Man is socially constructed. What we call "Woman" and "Man" today had not the same meaning of what we would call in the 16th century. Many cultures, actually, didn't have the idea of genders at all. Every definition is arbitrary and subjective, what doesn't mean it's not important, but still will try to fit individuals in unfitting boxes. The Gender Theory, aka Queer Theory, (the one referenced in the video) is a nice way to describe how we socially construct the idea of gender, sex, sexuality and others, in our contemporary western culture, and how to deconstruct those ideas to understand better ourselves.
The whole idea of a sexual dichotomy isn't socially constructed it's biologically so. Yes, you have rare genetic mutations, normally resulting in side effects which would end your genetic lineage. Gender is often reflected based on the average of the sex in question. So the things that the average biologically female person does is called the female gender. The things that the average biological male person does is called the male gender. Very few, if any, people are individually representations of the whole gender (at the average)... Simply put, gender is a social concept, build from the average behaviors of the biological sexes at that time. You also seemed to have missed the part where hank said that there are infinitely many "gender" boxes. Granted this is probably more accurate to call these personality boxes, in the way of having infinite. "Gender" boxes are basically a one size fits all box, if i say female, i mean right on the graphic at 1:38, male i mean the left, if you're arbitrarily close to the middle, feel free to call yourself bi-gendered (personally i think using the term "non-binary to signify the middle of a gradient is just nonsensical). All boxes have a center, but being inside the box, doesn't mean you must be at the center, if the box is large enough.
I personally beleive that the easiest way is to not even go into it just use queer if you wannna be more clear maybe say gender queer or sexuality queer but do we really have to label it? just leave it at that
UndertakerU2ber Nope just facts and common sense which he went over pretty thoroughly in the video but I mean if that's too hard for you to understand just say so pal
+Jack Of All Trades (Akanebae) If you think you're a wolf or make up your own genders/pronuns you're a special snowflake. If you have a penis but like to think of yourself as a woman you're just expressing yourself. There's a big difference in there.
I know. But then there are people who say I'm a special snowflake for being trans male :/ or even those that call hermaphrodites special snowflakes even though they kinda can't help how they were born.
You know what would be easier than arguing about which pronouns people should refer to others as, or creating dozens of new ones? Adopting a-gendered pronouns. There are tons of languages that only have one third person pronoun. For example, Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, Turkish, and Armenian all have genderless pronouns where the word for "he" and the word for "she" are the same word. Using that system in English would be much easier than trying to invent a dozen new pronouns. It would also eliminate all confusion.
While I appreciate what that would achieve, some people prefer gendered pronouns. I don't think making everything neutral for people too lazy/ ignorant to understand how to respect someone, is going to really fix the underlying issue.
we sort of have that pronoun already. the singular 'they' is a non-gendered pronoun that could be used in order to be discrete before finding out how someone wishes to be addressed.
***** how would you feel if someone used 'it' as a pronoun to describe you or someone you cared about? My idea with using 'they' is that it's respectful and socially acceptable as a singular pronoun. This person isn't writing an english essay so just let it happen out of politeness.
It's worth noting that chromosomes, genitals and hormones are also all separate aspects. There are people who have a Y chromosome but a vagina and more female-typical hormones, and people who don't have a Y chromosome but a penis and more male-typical hormone profiles. As far as I know, every combination is possible here. Intersex really messes up the gender binary. Once you begin to appreciate just how wildly diverse even so-called biological, physical gender is (and intersex people aren't even all that rare; it's just their true prevalence is vastly underestimated by most people, and tons of intersex people are even themselves withheld knowledge about their own condition by doctors), the idea that a woman and a man have to look like a particular norm starts to look quaint, and the concept of trans, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people in general becomes a lot more natural and obvious. And genitals become a whole lot less important. The Genderbread is a nice illustration of the complexity of gender.
I've read up on intersex ppl not long ago for one of my classes and from what I read, people who are born with a combination of sex attributes are due to a mutation or something going wrong when the chromosomes are not separated correctly. From what I know, it's pretty rare for a human to be born with both genitals being functional but it does happen. Humans and most other animals are separated into male and female because, when everything goes well during meiosis and the development of the fetus, a person will be born as male or female. The most likely reason for why most animals evolved to have two sexes is because 1st sexual reproduction has an advantage over asexual reproduction and while it would be possible for a species to involve more than two partners to reproduce, two is the simplest for sexual reproduction. Basically, life is complicated but the most beneficial way is usually taken because it prolongs the species survival.
I remember watching this a decade ago and really resonating with the message. In hindsight I can now say that this was an epiphany in my life, this was the first time I really started seeing things as continuums. Life is colored in shades of gray. Thanks Hank.
I remember when this was posted. I was starting my Junior year of high school and was extremely confused about both my gender and my sexuality. This video gave me language that I didn't have, but--more important to me personally--it made feel calm, supported, and loved... Like everything was going to be okay. That was not something I was used to feeling back then, and it makes me emotional every time I think about it.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, in fact I doubt you will. But words cannot describe how much I appreciate this piece of media. Knowing a cis white person can have this sort of world view... It fills me with joy and hope. Thank you Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
Another cis white person here, if you wanted to hear about it: I know shit's real tough right now in a lot of places but know that we're pulling for you out here however we can. I hope if it ever feels like you've got nowhere to turn, that you know that you have more friends out here than you might realize, and we want the best for you. Really hoping you've been doing alright
I’m here almost 10 years late but this is still amazing and I wish I had found it back then as a very confused middle school kid. Thank you so much Hank!
I'm no scientist (although sometimes I wish I had gone down that path), but I have traveled a lot and I've met and interacted with all sorts of people over the years and while all I can go on is my own experience, I have been convinced that the complex relations between human beings...including human sexuality, is an extremely varied and complex thing not even close to, at least the up to today, culturally viewed (subjective) norms of who's attractive or who isn't, who's meant to love eachother and who isn't, or the clean categorization many minds still sort of cling to (although that's human nature.)...nor is it a black and white "procreation or nothing" scenario, we may be made from the same stuff but we're not exactly like other animals either. The reasons people fall in love, or become attracted to each other, is so dependent upon a multitude of individualistic factors and I think in part thanks to the digital age, many old mindsets and traditions on the subject are being challenged or in the least, put under a microscope constantly right now. I do believe we're right on the cusp of a bit of a revolution (or battleground really, depending on where you're coming from) on what human intimacy is all about. Like I said, I'm no scientist or sociologist, but I do feel like there are signs of this everywhere. It's one of many examples of institutionalized widespread mindsets of some sort being re-examined.
Trans guy here. Lovely explanation and some new info even to someone who has actively explored these both internally and practically. The intensity axis on gender was especially interesting to me along with sexual behavior as separate from orientation. 9 years after this video I'd love to see Hank or John address current transgender topics. Your 4 minute videos on marriage equality I think have done more good than hours of prosthelatizing by politicians and classic advocates. Love you guys!
Hank this is actually one of the most amazing videos I've ever watched :') this makes me really happy to see that people actually understand how this kind of thing feels. :)
"I am a straight white male who doesn't have to deal with a lot of the hate" Right then, I noticed the unicorn in the background. I figure that, even if you did, you could not care less.
This video should be shown to everyone. Whether they understand these ideas or not, people need to learn to accept them. Just because some people may mix and match in the different "boxes" of society doesn't make them any less inferior to their fellow man. And the people who believe they are better than others just because they stay in the most stereotypical roles (eg. Male sex, male gender (roles), and heterosexual sexual orientation and behaviour) are in a way actually making themselves seem even worse. To anyone out there who will listen... Be yourself. And be proud of who you are! You are a beautiful human being and don't let anyone take that away from you! :):) All my love and support xx
I keep coming back to this video as my go to explanation for people who have questions. It's so affirming. Sometimes I watch it just to remind myself, and get back to basics, letting go of some of the residue from difficult conversations.
Honestly, disregarding how anyone person feel about anyone of these topic, I have to say that I have never seen a video be so clear, objective, and obvious as this one in regards to lgbtqia+ spectrums and concepts.
It's crazy how many people get angry at trans people for literally just having media like this to help them with their own personal mental health. Imagine getting triggered by someone trying to get help.
Keep in mind, this was 10 years ago, and people still don't understand lol. Being a trans women, I resonate with this video but like goddamn, this man should have been the reason Ben Shapiro don't exist lol
What he FUCKING said. If only everyone could be so accepting. "Oh so you don't identify as a male or a female? Oh so you are pansexual/asexual/demisexual? Okay." Sadly, it is difficult for a lot of people.
Well,, pansexuals, asexuals and demisexuals (and all the others sexuality) can identify as males or females or another gender. I wanted to speak about gender in the first question (male/female/other) and sexuality in the second one. Just the kind of response I would like to see from everyone: acceptance of gender and sexuality.Demon de la Katzu Inaba
Soup Nazi Agender, genderfluid... internet will tell you better than me about it. Ultimately, whether you agree that those exist or not (I personally identify as female), what matters if that people feel good with themselves. If someone says "I am agender" or "I am genderfluid" don't tell them they are wrong, even if you think it, let them be whoever they feel happy with being. That's way more constructive.
These comments are really full of kind, compassionate people, but also a bunch of ignorant assholes who are afraid of what they don't understand. You'd think that this video would help educate people more, which it really has, but some people are s little stubborn unfortunately. One common misconception people seem to have is confusing transgender and transsexual as the same thing. Transgender is the identity you have in your brain while transsexual is when you physically change your gender. Transsexualism is usually caused by someone's transgender feelings, but certainly not all transgender people go through a sex change. Also, people who are saying that being transgender or gay or whatever is a choice, it's not. If you had these feelings you would know it's not. A gay male liking men controls his attraction just as much as a straight man liking women does, which is none. Same as how a man who feels like a man can't control feeling like a man while a man who feels like a woman can't control it.
Then explain to me why some people chhoose to be gay because they can't get a woman? Explain to me why every living thing is meant to reproduce, yet there are some who "can't" because of their desired gender.
MC Castellanos hey there :) I, by no means, am an expert on any of the things that Hank or Baby Metroid discussed, but I'd like just throw in my own two cents - I have no intention of starting an argument, so I hope my comment doesn't lead to one! Firstly, I've never met anyone who has consciously "chosen" to have an other sexual orientation other than what they have always felt, and have never truly discussed it with anyone. What you are referring to seems more like what Hank said when he talked about how many people have different sexual orientations, sexual behavior or gender identities, etcetera, as time goes on. A person may be attracted to a man for his/her teenage years, and many years later, find that he or she is attracted to a woman, or not attracted to anyone at all. Personally, I don't find anything "wrong" or "weird" about this, but I understand how some people (maybe you) may, depending on your personal beliefs. I probably don't agree with those beliefs, but I understand them. Secondly, I do think every living thing is meant to reproduce. This belief is obviously personal to me, and I don't expect everyone to share it, but I know that some people do share it. Procreation is a defining characteristic of "life", but not everyone believes in destiny, nor does everyone have religious beliefs. This is why I do not think saying "every living thing is meant to reproduce" is an accurate statement. From an evolutionary, or biological, standpoint, I can definitely see the point you are making, however. Thirdly, I want to address your word usage. When you used the words "they can't get a woman", I was a concerned because your words, to me, were used to blatantly objectify a person. People, regardless of their sex, are not objects. To read that people feel they can possess a woman is not startling, but it is an unhealthy mindset that I want to raise awareness of. I feel like I am going into a whole other topic, but I just wanted to relay to you that phrasing your words like that is offensive, and maybe how you, or people you know, view women is a little skewered. I'm sorry if you are offended, and I sincerely hope that we both learned something from each other's comments and this video!
Stray Kitten Yes! I can't agree more. This kind of stuff is seen with many animals. Also, humanity would be better off if more people chose not to have kids since overpopulation is already starting to become a problem and it will only escalate from here. If everyone just mindlessly put out kids because they were "made to", the world would be in a sorry state.
Why you should you care about if people get the 2 trans confused? Since when has actually looking at what your genitals say you are stopped you from believing in radical bullshit
@cajunking5987 acknowledging that there is more to something doesn't erase anything that came before it. No one is trying to get rid of biological sex
i realize that this is almost exactly five years late and it's not likely hank or john will read this, but i wanted to say thanks. i use this video when i have to come out (particularly to older family members) because it explains gender/sexuality as a spectrum better than i can articulate sometimes. of course attitudes have changed, we've learned new things in the last five years alone, but still. at the end of showing this to someone, i usually then say "and it's EVEN MORE complicated than that, but you get the idea." anything beyond gay or straight is a new concept to some people, i appreciate how this video breaks it down efficiently and in a way that doesn't condescend to a viewer who might not know uch about the subject. so thanks again.
(also, my grandmother asked me to email this link to her so she could show her friends, "the fast-talking guy, i like him")
Ohmygod they liked this comment! Hope you are doing well :)
My health teacher assigned my class this video and it makes me happy to know she's supportive because a lot of people at my school are very homophobic

This video in particular actually helped me a lot personally. As a heterosexual white male, with little to nothing in the way of physiological "quirks", information about sexual orientation was kind of something I kind of had to seek out. with asexuality - is it that you can romantically like/love/want to be with a person, but you would never have sex
or is it that you aren't attracted at all
or neither
I'm just curious
asexuality means that you don't experience any sexual attraction; not related at all to romantic attraction! and not all asexual people are averse to the idea of having sex either, so they still might do that, whether it's for the pleasure of their partner or another reason.
This video was so ahead of its time!

"What's really important is that we trust ourselves and we understand ourselves and we love and respect ourselves and we grant that same understanding and respect to the people around us."
Too often we find ourselves being judgmental of others, and more often than that we are judgmental of ourselves. +Echoes yeah it's called wanting friends..
haha! but I strongly believe in soulmates and platonic relationships
+Jared Greenwald I just want to clear this up- there are four main types of attraction I'm aware of, and I've done a bit of research. your four are romantic, platonic, sexual, and aesthetic. Here is a quick breakdown:
Sexual: wanting to have sex with someone, finding them "hot" or "sexy"
Romantic: wanting a romantic relationship with someone- this can be defined many ways but usually involves cuddling, hugging, maybe kissing.
Platonic: a desire to be friends with someone
Aesthetic: not necessarily finding someone hot or cute, but appreciating that they look nice
It can be hard to differentiate between romantic/sexual for a lot of people, but think of romantic as wanting to date someone and sexual as wanting to have sex with someone. I'm asexual, and I've done quite a bit of research on this. AVEN is a good resource if you want more information!

Most people wants to live a normal life without having to think abot these sort of things.
If being able to define what you are gives you a better idea of who you are and the ability to function through life then you are fine the way you are.
this is done SO well and it’s SO clear and brief UGH everyone deserves to see this video 🥰
This guy was talking about gender, sex, and sexuality over a decade ago, yet people think it's an idea stemming from hatred for donald trump.
You watched too much futa porn

I wish this was shown in schools. Under 4 minutes and people could become a lot less ignorant and a lot more accepting and cooperative.
Impossible, the ignorant are forever ignorant. But I view the glass as half empty.
Jake Schenk thats pretty pessimistic, when you think of how far society has come
I would say this is an OK version but not what it should be taught at schools.
This is probably the best video i have ever seen on this topic. Short, simple, fun.
Wait + and - is - so - + - which is +
So you are in a relationship with a woman?

GreedyCapybara7 Exactly.
I would really like to see an asexual human
To all the homophobics:
Not only -homo-sapiens are known for a specie that has homosexual individuals.
I like Ducks. I like yellow ducks.
TreeroyJ Well yes, but the "it's found in other animals" argument is used against people who say it's unnatural.
niklavs skuaj Indeed.
TreeroyJ, I do not completely agree with you. You have a point though. (I do not agree, nor do I disagree..)
A person can kill someone.
Yessir straight man. Nothing to see here.
+
I personally beleive that the easiest way is to not even go into it just use queer if you wannna be more clear maybe say gender queer or sexuality queer but do we really have to label it? just leave it at that
gender is not a social construct, that is why it cannot be disparaged

I didn't know that. Very cool, thanks for sharing :)
anything for a fellow nerdfighter
***** how would you feel if someone used 'it' as a pronoun to describe you or someone you cared about? My idea with using 'they' is that it's respectful and socially acceptable as a singular pronoun. This person isn't writing an english essay so just let it happen out of politeness.

+Political Revolution This is useful because it helps you understand and accept yourself and those around you.
When hank started talking about the sexual habits of priests I thought it was going in a VERY different direction.

Hank - HELLO
Since when has actually looking at what your genitals say you are stopped you from believing in radical bullshit
tons of kids on the internet you know.
