'The History of Byzantium' is a podcast telling the story of the Roman Empire from 476 AD to 1453.
This is part 1 of a 4 part series on the Byzantine
Bishop John Chrysostom. John grew up in
Antioch and eventually rose to be the Archbishop
of Constantinople itself.
By following his journey we learn more about
daily life in Byzantium. In part 1 we look at

The eastern provinces, pre plague, must have been one glorious voyage for the wandering tourist. Constantinople, still growing, Antioch, ancient, well established, Alexandria, vibrant and leaned even after the anti pagan violence in Theodosius' day. It all must have been a sight to behold. I love history. Even when I come away from my studies thinking, "gods, all we've lost."
