  • John Chrysostom, also known as Golden Mouth, is most famous for his amazing speaking ability. His Antiochene approach to Scripture and his love for the common people combined to create a very effective ministry. In this video, we look at the life and progression of Chrysostom from a lawyer in training, into the hills of Antioch, into the heart of Constantinople, and finally into exile.

John Chrysostom was born 349AD and after the death of his father, he began training under Libanius. John quickly rose to the top of his class, but as he was introduced to Christianity he slowly started to change his future plans. After the death of Libanius John decided to join the ministry as a Lector. Soon after becoming a lector, he decided to try the monastic life. After spending a few years in the Mountains trying to live out the monastic life, he had to give up and return to Antioch because of health issues.
After arriving back into the ministry he quickly rose through the ranks of the local church. In 386 he finally became a presbyter and two years later he would finally take his next step into stardom. In 386 an event known as the Affair of the Statues sent Bishop Flavian to try and beg the emperor not to kill everyone, and in this time John stood up and calmed the entire city. After this John became known as a man of the people and an amazing speaker.
Fast forward a few years and John was called to be the Bishop of Constantinople. Immediately he began making changes to combat the people using the Church for the wrong reasons. He sold expensive Church items, fired people, and started creating infrastructure to help the poor and needy. While doing this he created many enemies, but also found a very prominent friend in Olympias that would help get him through the hard times of ministry. But all of his enemies began to converge as Eudoxia, who felt attacked by John ruled to exile him, and the Church met to exile him as well.
His exile would be rough as his ill health made this very difficult for him. He stayed in contact with many of his followers, but his impact would slow down as his time in exile increased. Eventually, his body started giving away as the issues he struggled with his entire life began to take hold. Finally, in 407 on the shore of the Black Sea, he passed away.
The legacy of John Chrysostom can still be seen today in both Eastern and Western Church tradition. Hundreds of his sermons still remain today, and the work that he put into his messages, and connecting them to the people of his day make them still very practical for modern audiences. The teachings of Saint John Chrysostom conflict with all Christian sects that aren't Orthodox.
Only the Orthodox faith has preserved the truth ☦️

Four years of detachment or ascetic detachment greatly serve a person who is on the way to what is called Self-Realization.

Yes. Thank you C.B.! Another tortured Doctor of the Church who "graced" the world with his presence. It is said that emotional turbulence raises consciousness. John Chrysostom was marched to death under guard.

    John Chrysostom
    Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος
    c. 347 - 14 September 407
He was an important Early Church Father who served as archbishop of Constantinople.
He is known for his preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, his Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities.
The epithet Χρυσόστομος (Chrysostomos, anglicized as Chrysostom) means "golden-mouthed" in Greek and denotes his celebrated eloquence.
Chrysostom was among the most prolific authors in the early Christian Church, although both Origen of Alexandria and Augustine of Hippo exceeded Chrysostom.

2:29 He said, " To what was the accepted path at that time by entering onto the monastic life." This is a strange statement, as if this lifestyle was not led by the Holy Spirit or no longer the acceptable to God. Was it not the Holy Spirit leading and guiding Christ for 40 days into the wilderness? Or was it just," The accepted path of that time?" And what about John the Baptist? He lived hundreds years before Chrysostom he was called to this life by the Holy Spirit. Paul the Apostle was called to this life for a few years as well, that Christ may teach him. Discernment heard this statement and a redflag went up...Matthew 19:12 there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

I completely agree with your statement. It might not have been as clear as I planned in writing the script. I was trying to point out that as John leaned into his calling from God to join the ministry, the most accepted way of doing that was by joining the monastery. It is not to downgrade the move, matter of fact, John's teacher Libanius, a worldly philosopher, thought his move was foolish, but John knew this call to the mountains to be an extremely important part of his calling to become closer to God.

"Chrysostom" is not his last name, as you implied in the first moments of your video. "Chrysostom" MEANS Goldenmouth.

“ Saint John Chrysostom, the famous Bishop of Constantinople, ascribed the origin of enslavement to the insatiable greed of man and insisted upon Paul's view that in the Church the social distinction of free and slave did not exist…”
