These guys are an enigma for me. When i was a kid, they would curve into a ball whenever i touched them. Twenty years later, in the same house, the same trees and soil, they're still there but they don't make themselves a ball anymore no matter what and I'm too lazy to investigate why

The roly polies are a family of species that are part of a larger group of terrestrial isopods commonly called woodlice (unfortunate, since they're not parasitic like and imo icky like lice). There are a lot of common species of both, so you were probably encountering different species that look alike.

There are likely multiple species of isopods where you live. Where I am (upstate NY) there are 2 main types: Armadillifium vulgare are the ones that roll up, and the Oniscidae sp. don't roll up. Some people call those ones sowbugs. They look nearly identical at a passing glance and live in the same places

This is by far the best version of this trend i've seen. they're all overdramatic and sound like a darksouls boss in chiptune (although i get thats part of the joke, it doesnt make much sense) however this *feels* like a roly poly song.
