Really, there are *still* people pulling that whole "OMG THE N64 CONTROLLER MAKES NO SENSE LUL" stuff? It's really not that complicated. Your right hand (almost) always stays on the right grip, and, depending on whether you're playing a 2D (D-Pad) or 3D (analog stick) game, your left hand is on the left or middle grip. Every grip has a shoulder/trigger button. Voila. You were never meant to use all three grips at the same time. Also I bought quest 64 a few years back because I remember renting it and being like what is this and why is it so hard. I actually enjoyed it now that I understand it lol
1080° Snowboarding truly was a classic! It solidified my love for snowboarding games. Paving the way for SSX Tricky, 1080° Avalanche, and a desire to pick up a copy of STEEP. Maybe someday, I can try to hit the slopes and get back into snowboarding IRL.
To be fair, the Switch takes “cards,” and SD Cards are common these days, while cds in the computer world have gone the way of the dinosaur. Not to over analyze a joke...
N64 controller is great! I don’t understand the problem… All these people saying “I don’t have three hands” blá-blá-blá Back then you didn’t need to use the stick and the d-pad at the same time at all! And the R button was there to replace the L button when needed.
Seems people don't realize there are three different configs for the N64 controller... Control stick and A-B & C buttons. The ABC buttons with a D-pad, and the D-pad with the control stick. You use different parts of the controller depending on the game and what button layout it supports. Seems like the D-pad & AB/C buttons were meant to emulate GameBoy games? I think you were able to play your version of Pokémon on Pokémon Stadium without a GameBoy so long as you had the cartridge adapter for it?
Coming from a PlayStation kid, I'd say this has to be my N64 list. 10. (Can't think of games that I spent enough time on to be worthy of this spot) 9. Goldeneye 007 8. Jet Force Gemini 7. Mario Kart 64 6. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards 5. Donkey Kong 64 4. Banjo-Tooie 3. Super Mario 64 2. Star Fox 64 1. Banjo-Kazooie
Never heard of Rogue Squadron, but I sunk a lot of hours into Shadows of the Empire. A nice little side story set in the time of the original Trilogy (ahhh, I remember the hope I used to feel, looking forward to new Star Wars movies...) But really, can't fault your list or the honourable mentions! Thanks for this trip down memory lane!
My college roommate had quest64 and he knew that running upped one stat so we used rubber bands to hold the joystick in a position where the main character would run in a circle and we just left it going with the tv off for at least a day while that stat went up
I feel like almost everyone ignores the existence of the Goemon games. Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure are like two of the most underrated games on the system.
Dont get me wrong, i still absolutely hate superman 64, but back when i had my N64 it was one of the few games i had so i played it and.....i found out that if you go into the settings before you start the game and dig pretty deep then you can change the difficulty and actually do missions and have a little fun instead of just flying through rings. Also turok 2 seeds of evil is one of my all time favorite N64 games bc it had the perfect atmosphere and gameplay for what it was
The N64 was my first console the Christmas it came out. I was 6 years old and couldn't be more happy. But if my memory serves me right I remember playing Super Mario World and Link to the past when I was 4 at my cousin's house who lived out of state from us.
It annoys me a little bit that Goldeneye always gets more love than Perfect Dark, when the latter is superior in every single way. I can only guess that it's because less people have actually played PD than Goldeneye.
Perfect Dark did not sell as well, and suffered from the fact that it was one of the few Nintendo 64 games that pretty much required the RAM Expansion Pak, so it was not as impactful. Goldeneye had a much bigger impact due to the fact that it had an attach rate of 1 : 4 (one copy of Goldeneye made/sold for every N64 ever made/sold), and being the third best selling game on the system.
I loved perfect dark. But I much prefer the singleplayer levels in Goldeneye. When I was a kid I got lost in Perfect Darks levels quite often. So much so that I didn't complete it for years. Most of my time was spent on the shooting range and vsing Bots in multiplayer
I have always said that Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye in everything except maybe atmosphere. To this day, Perfect Dark is my favourite ever game (with Goldeneye being second), but it seems that Goldeneye is almost always the game that people talk about in best game lists.
Luckily, you're not! And I'm happy that a few developers have made modern snowboarding games today. Hopefully the 9th Gen. systems will have their own amazing snowboarding games with similar visuals found in Black Myth: Wukong. Can't imagine a snowboarding game built with UE5... 😃
Those tricks were extremely difficult to pull off, though. I could never get past completing a 1080° spin before hitting the bottom of the half-pipe. 🙁
In all honesty, I still think the controller was the best design of the era. The placing of the Z-trigger really just felt RIGHT! And it literally is two controllers in one with the D-pad.
My honourable mentions: Killer Instinct Gold, Turok 2, Vigilante 8, 1080 Snowboarding, Extreme G, Wrestlemania 2000, Sin and Punishment. The list could be longer but nobody got time for that.
Ogre Battle 64 deserves to be on this list and it deserves to be praised as one of the best RPGs of all time. Such a compelling story with great characters, music, tons of replayabilty with its multiple story paths, endings, and character build possibilities.

Wow when you got to Zelda OoT I got emotional, the memories of first playing that on Christmas morning starting in Links tree house, then out into Hyrule field...what a special game, and there is a reason why its ranked the best game over all time across any platform and console. I didn't complete the game for years and remember tearing up when I did. It was like a part of my childhood was finished.
The N64 controller was totally innovative. Plus, they gave you instructions on how to use it since it was the first controller with an analogue stick. All these lil digs he keeps saying about it is weird. I mean if you compare it to todays than fine, but this was the first. Diddy Kong racing was way more fun than Mario Kart 64.
People seem to forget the controller was meant to be held in three different ways. Middle and Right was the standard config for many N64 games. Left and Right to use the D-Pad instead of the control stick, and on *very* rare occasions, Left and Middle for a select few games that were developed without using the C-buttons or A & B or the right bumper. It gave devs flexibility on how they wanted their games to be played. To be honest, I can't recall any game that had people using the D-pad and control stick (Left and Middle) for their controller setup. And yes, Diddy Kong Racing is *much better* than Mario Kart! Xmas of '97 is one for the ages. Nothing can replace that day I saw the N64 under the tree and played tons of hours of StarFox 64 and Diddy Kong Racing.
Exactly, I remember the guide they gave to hold it like yesterday. Starfox 64 was amazing, so many gems on this console, which I still play to this day.
Actually the NES Max predates the N64 controller with a design close to the 3DS circle pad. But it was the first with analog sticks as we know them today.
The fact that Quest 64 was mentioned, even though it was a joke, is awesome. Nobody remembers that game. I had to turn my TV off and leave the console on cause I couldn't save. Great memories!
Gotta say that I agree with everything on this list. Banjo Tooie was my first game that was mine as a kid, and I loved it so freakin’ much. I think my catridge has a collective of maybe 500+ hours on it. It was great. Aso gotta say that I kiss the golden era of Rare. They had such amazing IPs.
I think you accidentally edited in some other list around 17 minutes. You were about to tell the world about Quest64's incredible implementation of RPG mechanics in one of the most unique, yet intuitive, hybrid realtime/turn based battle system, which also had one of the most interesting magic and magic/skill leveling systems in existence. How do you level your skills up? Well by using your skills. Do you want your defense to go up? Then take hits. Do you want to move faster and be more likely to avoid hits you take? Then run around a bunch. Literally just run around. Anywhere. There was almost always a brief moment to an enemy's attack in which it was possible to completely dodge, and if so, you could grind some incredibly powerful enemies with relative ease, and it always felt like you were some sort of god for figuring out the pattern. The most interesting part was how the terrain could actually end up playing an important role in combat, even though encounters were random, the area you fought in would still be exactly the same as where you were when the encounter happened. This could result in having very little room to maneuver for yourself, or even the enemies being obstructed and unable to attack properly. It could also create situations in which running away was problematic, as it would require getting past the enemy to get to an accessible zone in which running away was possible. Another interesting aspect was the strategy to grinding. When you first start understanding the mechanics, the natural instinct is to try to find the spirit stones as early as possible, but the way the mechanics work, the stronger you are, the harder it is to get stronger, so in reality, you want to grind as much as possible, track down and note the location of every spirit stone, and then only grab spirit stones at the last possible moment you will ever be able to access that location. Different spells and the proper positioning could also completely change the way a battle is played out. Spells would often have only a minimal amount of damage inflicted, but if you baited enemies into the proper position, it was possible to make a spell hit multiple targets and drastically increase your effectiveness per turn. You could also use your positioning to provoke an enemy into using a certain type of attack that you are more likely to be able to avoid. All of this was done without any grid system, which made it nearly impossible to learn the strategy and techniques simply by following a guide. Getting good required getting into the game and getting dirty. Those nuances made it incredibly unpredictable, and that gave it an unusual sense of reality for an RPG game.
Having a back button is a really good idea tbh. An oversight with modern controllers, is that most of your fingers do nothing, while most of the action is done with your thumbs.
just like you think tooie is better than the first, i think majora's mask is better than oot. i will die on this hill. also perfect dark was better than goldeneye. i will also die on this hill.

This has been my favorite Gamespot video. Give this person and their team a raise.
The voice over is a woman she said it at the beginning of the ocarina of time entry.
Agree 100% the person doing this review should be doing their own TH-cam channel they were great!
@@willjohnboy who said she wasn’t?
Not to mention with Pokemon Snap taking your cartridge to Blockbuster, buying a sick looking Pokemon themed credit card from the cashier which you also wanted to collect all of them, and printing your best photos!
Diddy king racing is one of my favourite games of all time, so underrated
Loved the humour and the list. Don't agree with all of your picks but video was great. Thanks!!
Goldeneye, Mario64, Majora’s Mask, Starfox64, Mario Kart 64, Waverace, F-Zero64, 1080 Snowboarding, Perfect Dark, Ep.1 Racer, Shadows of the Empire, Ocarina of Time (Water Temple betrayed me).
Wtf... this is one of the coolest video of Gamespot in a long time!
Putting clayfighter next to superman is a crime.
Never had so much fun as back when I had an n64, what a blessing to be grown up with it
I personally think the n64 has some of the best games ever created. If these gems were updated withe the latest graphics and controlls they would outshine so manny modern games.
I’m sure it was a tough list to put together, but I appreciate the honorable mention of Jetforce Gemini at the end ❤️
"A more child-friendly focus!"

I'm just glad that Nintendo added an expansion pass to their online services. This will allow me to play Ocarina of Time again
How is this possible? I thought it was only NES and SNES games that you could replay. Do you have more info on this service? Thanks in advance.

@@azeplays3563 yup i know emulators are good. I just wanna support the developers by buying their products :)

DK 64 is extremely underrated these days. Was loved back then and replaying it made me fall in love with it again despite people trashing it these days for some reason.
Top 3 should be DK 64, Perfect Dark and Ocarina of Time
I never got into zelda but ocarina of time was a game were I remember fully immersing in the world, having the choice to go wherever I wanted felt so freeing and the music is just so amazing the sounds and music straight pull me back to my childhood and the feeling I had in that moment all those years ago. The feeling is really indescribable but full of joy.😌
Banjo Kazooie is my best childhood memory with my dad!!! Really an awesome game! Felt a bit of an heartache when we are looking for Banjo Tooie in almost every malls and dont get any 😥😥 planning to set-up and play our N64 console this coming Holiday break and hope it is still working 👐🏻
I watched this list and the entire time didn't realize paper mario wasn't on there. That speaks to how good these games were. To me certain days some of these games are higher and lower. Also I bought quest 64 a few years back because I remember renting it and being like what is this and why is it so hard. I actually enjoyed it now that I understand it lol
The resident evil relationship with nintendo also brought the re 0 which was a 👌 game
GameCube remake and zero was amazing
YASSSS!!!!!! Your list is literally perfection!!!!! Nintendo needs to pay attention to this video for their Switch N64 ports!
5: Mario Kart 64
4: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
3: Super Mario 64
2: Goldeneye 007
1: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Shadowman, Beetle Adventure Racing, Mystical Ninja, 1080 Snowboarding all amazing too
1080° Snowboarding truly was a classic!
I don’t understand the problem…
All these people saying “I don’t have three hands” blá-blá-blá
Back then you didn’t need to use the stick and the d-pad at the same time at all! And the R button was there to replace the L button when needed.
I think people that hate on it, don't know how to use it.
10. (Can't think of games that I spent enough time on to be worthy of this spot)
9. Goldeneye 007
8. Jet Force Gemini
7. Mario Kart 64
6. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
5. Donkey Kong 64
4. Banjo-Tooie

Right SM 64 and Pokémon Stadium🥰🥰

Never heard of Rogue Squadron, but I sunk a lot of hours into Shadows of the Empire. A nice little side story set in the time of the original Trilogy (ahhh, I remember the hope I used to feel, looking forward to new Star Wars movies...)
But really, can't fault your list or the honourable mentions! Thanks for this trip down memory lane!
My college roommate had quest64 and he knew that running upped one stat so we used rubber bands to hold the joystick in a position where the main character would run in a circle and we just left it going with the tv off for at least a day while that stat went up
Oh, wow. I honestly never knew that.
The style of this video gave me life 😂. Well done with the script, voice over and editing 👌
I feel like almost everyone ignores the existence of the Goemon games. Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure are like two of the most underrated games on the system.
It would definitely make my number 1
What was those playstation games shown at the beginning
Jet Force Gemini will never get the recognition it deserves... such an amazing game
Bodyharvest always gets overlooked. Was an highly experimental game that had massive shortcomings but when it shined it shone bright.
Also turok 2 seeds of evil is one of my all time favorite N64 games bc it had the perfect atmosphere and gameplay for what it was
Amen regarding Turok 2.
@@justinratcliffe947 THANK YOU! Its such an under appreciated game
The N64 was my first console the Christmas it came out. I was 6 years old and couldn't be more happy.
But if my memory serves me right I remember playing Super Mario World and Link to the past when I was 4 at my cousin's house who lived out of state from us.
Bruh, Christmas 1996, being 6 and experiencing 3D for the very first time with Mario 64. Can relate.

64 yeah
@@GreyWolfLeaderTW True, but this list isn't called "The most successful N64 games" or "The most impactful N64 games", it's "The BEST N64 games"
I loved perfect dark. But I much prefer the singleplayer levels in Goldeneye. When I was a kid I got lost in Perfect Darks levels quite often. So much so that I didn't complete it for years. Most of my time was spent on the shooting range and vsing Bots in multiplayer
I agree with you. PD is superior in every way.
I have always said that Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye in everything except maybe atmosphere. To this day, Perfect Dark is my favourite ever game (with Goldeneye being second), but it seems that Goldeneye is almost always the game that people talk about in best game lists.
Man, you almost made me cry with the OOT presentation and the music. 😢
Great video ! Gamestop is lucky to have people like you, very entertaining the way you talk about the list keep it up young padawan
Am I the only one who remembers 1080 snowboarding?
Luckily, you're not! And I'm happy that a few developers have made modern snowboarding games today. Hopefully the 9th Gen. systems will have their own amazing snowboarding games with similar visuals found in Black Myth: Wukong.
Can't imagine a snowboarding game built with UE5... 😃
Those tricks were extremely difficult to pull off, though. I could never get past completing a 1080° spin before hitting the bottom of the half-pipe. 🙁
@@ElderStatesman you'll never get the gold rider with that attitude...
Im so glad its coming to the switch, I've been wanting to play banjo kazooie/tooie and star fox 64 so badly.

This was an amazing list by an amazing and passionate gamer girl 👏
I remember that we had to keep the 64 on all night to keep playing quest because didn’t have the memory pack
Good list. Sad there was no mention of Blast Corps though. It was such a good game.

This video was awesome
Mew is a cat.
Meow. Mew. Cat.
Yes, same with Mewtwo. Literally looks like a cougar on two legs.
Banjo-Tooie is announced on the Switch Online ! I’m excited to discover it, I’ve never played it
The editing and jokes in this are hilarious! I am LOVING the pieces you do.
This is one of the rare ranking lists which i mostly agree with
Having a back button is a really good idea tbh. An oversight with modern controllers, is that most of your fingers do nothing, while most of the action is done with your thumbs.
just like you think tooie is better than the first, i think majora's mask is better than oot. i will die on this hill. also perfect dark was better than goldeneye. i will also die on this hill.
All the games selected are good in my opinion, I just think the order could use work. Pokémon stadium 2, Mario Party, and Paper Mario should have been mentioned as well. Other than that, thanks for bringing back such great memories.
The Pokemon Stadium games and DK64 obviously should have been on here, but leaving off Paper Mario is literally criminal.
Donkey Kong 64 I think is very underrated and deserved a place in this list
Got mine when Mario Kart 64 released and have many fond memories playing multiplayer games with friends.
But I do believe it’s one of the harder consoles to go back to. I can go back to SNES and be amazed how well so many games look, but the blocky style and muddy look of so many games really stands out.
