- Exit the Gungeon has received a lot of negative reviews since it's release as it was a lot different than it's predecessor Enter the Gungeon, but is it actually that bad?

If Exit came first, people would love it. The problem is it came after Enter, which is a masterpiece, so anything that isnt legendary will fall short. Exit is a great game, but not a masterpiece.
Tbh its just kind of boring. I love the roguelike genre but just found this one to be lacking. There are certainly worse games but it had the potential to be a much better game given its legacy.
I didn’t even know people said it’s bad! I’ve played Enter and Exit and highly enjoyed both. I thought it was a really unique and creative way to bring the game to mobile platforms!
The normal game would work just fine on mobile though lol
Thanks for doing this - I had stayed away from this game just based on some discussions online, I thought it would be lame, plus it looked more like platformer to me just looking at the screen shots, and I'm not a huge fan of that style of game . Even so, seeing some of the game play and your review, I think I'll at least wishlist it and pick it up when its on sale at some point. Of course it won't be as good as Enter, but playing it as a stand alone and not comparing to Enter, it looks fun in its own right. Great vid!
I think if it was a stand alone game it would have a lot more positive feedback. Thanks for supporting and watching as always!
The game got such a bad reputation because of how it was originally started. This game was literally unplayable, and it only became what it is now after a lot of patches
So it’s a similar situation to No Man’s Sky or Cyberpunk 2077?
@@autismandgaming4532yep
Gamers be like: waahh this game is slightly different than the previous one, literally unplayable
People tend to like consistency so I can understand the dislike, but really this game is incredible
Frfr
yeah. i agree.
I think it being mobile first is the bigger factor here
Darkest Dungeon 2 got the same reception despite being a great game as well. Old game good new game bad is the motto that stays with every fanbase and it makes me sad
good video. I might give Exit another chance again. But to be honest, I still think my main issue with the game is the fact that it's a platformer in the first place, instead of what you highlighted ("you will normally play with Blessed Mode on, although you can turn it off" -> which turns to be a non-issue, when you assume this is the main issue despite the fact that a solution has been baked in the game via an update)
I personally just think games have different paces. If we're talking about Bullet Hells, something like Nuclear Throne is more on the "quick but simple" side, with how most of enemies attack you (although there are some exceptions), while Touhou is on the other spectrum of "Bullets are really slow but they are as complex as firework sparks",
Enter the Gungeon falls exactly in the middle.
Which was, enough complexity to make me engaged, but not too complicated to make me overwhelmed. It was the sweet spot for me, personally.
Exit the Gungeon, on the other hand, heavily leans more towards simplistic-but-quick patterns I feel, and while it is valid that you liked it for being reminiscent of EtG moves, I still think this alone changes the game entirely. I didn't like Nuclear Throne, so it follows that I don't like Exit. This is not a fault of the game, mind you; it is a platformer. Since you are always fighting against gravity, of COURSE the bullet patterns has to be simpler. It would be too hard otherwise.
But that's exactly my personal issue aside from the pace: you will ALWAYS be fighting against gravity, and the ledges / platforms are not numerous enough to give you the same feeling of being in a "free floating" Touhou level, or the feel of a top-down 2D shooter like Enter; where in both cases, you can position your character anywhere instead of relying on ledges.
THIS, is my main issue with the game. That's literally it.
So it's not a bad game despite that; it's just not for me considering how much of the core design is different. It's meant to be a mobile game in the first place.
I would personally still much rather prefer to play a game with complex bullet patterns that lets my character free-float in positioning, rather than a more simplistic, quicker-paced one that makes me constantly fight against gravity.
I remember getting Enter The Gungeon for free during the pandemic on ps4, its an absolute masterpiece and its still my second favourite rouguelike of all time, just behind ROR2, which is also a fantastic and unique game on its own, i seriously think that these two are worth WAY more than what their actual price is, to the point that even a 60 dollar tag wouldn't make them justice on how good they are
They are defiantly games that you get much more bang for your buck
I just got Exit like a week ago. Had no idea it was available for PlayStation until stumbling across it in the store. Been playing Enter for a year or so and I’m highly addicted to it and was kinda excited when I found out Exit was available on console. It’s fun and i enjoy it but it doesn’t hold a candle to Enter. It’s still a fun way to get a quick Gungeon fix and another game I’m now becoming addicted to 100% completing. I do really hope we get a true sequel to Enter one day though!
Thank you for the very articulated and in-depth review!
I don't play Gungeon (although I've seen videos here and there) but your commentary left me engaged until I barely noticed the video nearing it's end. I don't really leave comments but after taking a peek at the sub/comment count on what I would've thought to be a big youtuber I had a change of mind.
Keep up with the good work and hopefully this comment will help with the Almighty Algorithm.
Thanks for the very supportive comment, these types of comments are always a nice breath of fresh air. Thanks for watching the video as well! Means a lot
I completed it as well, its very different from the original, but still quite fun.
I gotta give to them that the art of the game looks fantastic.
Agree 100%. Always love Dodgeroll. They know how to make a great game
People should learn the difference between a spin off game and a sequel. Exit the Gungeon is not a real sequel and it was only available for the apple arcade at first for a reason.
Due to the lack of new assets, I strongly feel like they just made it to ride their high and pump something new to Apple Arcade quickly to stay relevant and the mobile-y arcade-y feel doesn't line up with the original game, so I understand why players of Enter would reject Exit. Doesn't make it bad, just not remarkable to justify playing it.
Woah i though this channel had like a million subs, you deserve them! the edition and commenting is perfect! new sub
Thank you for subbing! And thanks for the kind words, really means a lot
Nice. I actually own Exit but haven't played it yet. Will definitely need to give it a whirl soon.
Just as addicting, just has way less content, so it gets more repetitive. The thing that takes away the replayability the most is the gun constantly changing, you pretty much see 90% of the guns in a single run, even if only for a couple seconds, so you dont get satisfaction of finding new and wacky guns as you play.
I think Enter the Gungeon is better but Exit is pretty fun. I wouldn't call it bad but the lower amount of content (item/gun count, challenge modes) makes it feel less replayable to me. I'd say it's the type of game to wait for a sale to get
I'd say the main problem with the game is that it's way too easy (although makes sense for mobile, it kinda sucks on pc) as well as lack of variety. Every character has exact same path they follow. I mean yeah, you can technically play as different character on another route, but that's not the same as branching paths. And also there's only 2 final bosses, so once you beat those as every character, there's nothing in the game left. I mean yeah the game is nice to play, but it's really nothing but a simple mobile game to spend your time with, not a full thing (also considering they abandoned the game extremely quickly)
I played this on Apple Arcade and was really bad at it, but it was fun anyway. I think the only problem with it being an Apple Arcade exclusive is the small screen on iPhones, So I’m glad they released it on steam.
IS there an easy mode?
This game needs an endless mode. Where after the boss, you are taken to a random stage.
I think the fundamental flaw with Exit the Gungeon is that you get invincibility just for jumping. To balance how absurdly strong this is, just about every enemy and especially every boss has absolutely ridiculous attack patterns that basically just come down to figuring out how to not land inside of a bullet while spamming jump, and you can't shoot while jumping. This is extra baffling because there's already a way to perform a normal roll out of a jump. The insane amount of air control you have would make dodging bullets mid-air be fun and rewarding like the original Gungeon's gameplay, and if enemies were tuned around this mechanic instead of being balanced around a gungeoneer who is invincible 90% of the time, the game would be much more engaging. There are plenty of other flaws that pile onto this, but I think the invincible jumps and balancing being done around it is the number one factor holding it back from being even close in quality to the first game.
I loved Exit the Gungeon when it came out. My only problem with it was that it was a little bit too easy for my taste.
Damn too easy? I will say I got the hang of it fast and beat the game with everyone fast, but felt the enter the gungeon skill transferred over.
Did you play a lot of enter the gungeon?
@@Burr_ I did (although I wasn’t any good at it). I play a lot of roguelikes though, so I’m pretty used to learning a games mechanics quickly.
I’m a bit late to this, but I feel like a big problem with Exit is that it’s too easy, especially after playing Enter. If you’ve gotten good at Enter there’s not much to learn and improve at in Exit, which (to me) is one of the most fun things about roguelikes.
I’ve only played three or four runs after getting the game and won all of them, none of which were particularly satisfying or memorable. It’s a good game, but I feel like there just isn’t much reason to play it if you already have Enter the Gungeon outside of specifically getting it for mobile.
This is a very underrated indie channel
Thank you for the kind words! Always doing my best to make videos on any games that pique my interest
Can you make vid for best fps/tps roguelike games? basically like risk of rain 2? :)😅
It's one I've always wanted to delve into, but feel I still need to play more shooter roguelites for it
I am a fan of Contra, this was my jam! The overall gameplay is much more suited to me than ETG. So i feel like i have to defend this game every time it's brought up. This is not a whole sequel. It is a much smaller, much different game, deliberately. Yes, the default way of playing "blessed" may not be to people's liking, but otherwise it suffered from undue expectations and waaay too much undeserved bashing.
I agree it gets undeserved bashing. I was expecting some horrible experience when first playing, but was surprised with how much I liked the difference. I can always appreciate when developers are willing to try something new when their previous entry in a series does so well
for mobile game standards exit the gungeon was amazing
I play exit exclusively on the phone, don't worry, every dodge slows the game down.
I thought that was too easy so I connected a co trailer to my phone and began playing that way
Interesting. I had no idea the game slowed down, make's it sound a lot more doable
I played both enter and exit, and at least in my opinion, I just didn't like it as much, even having played it before enter, but it isn't as bad as some say it is in my view
I agree. I LOVE Enter, but people made out Exit to be a horrible game when in reality it's a pretty damn good game that just so happened to have one of the greatest games of all time be it's predecessor
Exit the Gungeon is not a sequel and should not be treated as if it was. It is a mobile (apple arcade) game ported to pc
Great video! I've enjoyed watching you stream this game a lot!
Thanks for watching here and on twitch! Always means a lot
reminds me a bit of shovel knight dig. similar game with similar "eh it's alrightness"
I just don't get how I can be so good at bullet hell games and so absolutely trash at platformers. I've got like -60 to jump somehow
Takes time to learn a whole new style of game. Exit the gungeon is definitely a hard platformer
honestly, enter the gungeon is my 3rd favorite rougelite of all time
(number 2 being barony and number 1 being streets of rouge)
but yeah exit the gungeon is a really good game, i would highly recomend getting it on sale if you enjoyed enter the gungeon
forgot to mention this but the advertisement for these games was some of the best gaming advertisements of all time
Dodge Roll is a team that seems to be filled with tom foolery and I love it. But I also think they're owned by Devolver Digital, so , it makes sense
Streets of "Rouge" 😂. So cute
@@jfbarabe6785 whats so cute about a game where you can commit genocide as a gorilla?
How have i never heard of exit
I watched this with interest (thanks for once, related vids) since I smelled something scummy from this game.
You jumped in genuinely and with a random approach as you should and you went through without making a stupid long 40 mins vid that simply needed 5 to make the point valid. I really enjoyed clicking it.
Seeing this it's like comparing Guild Wars 1 and 2: it's not to say that the 2nd is bad (and it's a bit more complicated). It's just that the 1st has a much stronger and original character.
This feels even heavier on exit the gungeon since it looks pretty similar to enter the one (heh) and, at least for me, it gives a sour taste of a soulless cashgrab on a 1st look.
I feel kinda bad for thinking that now I saw this because it looks like they genuinely tried to simply make a genuine silly sequel to answer a "what now?" question.
A sequel that genuinely got it bad instead was super meat boy. You just don't turn anything into an autoscroller...
Thanks for giving it a shot and genuinely enjoying it! Comments like this really help a lot and makes me more happy with how this video turned out.
I also, didn't even know Super Meat Boy had a sequel. I don't think I ever even beat the original back on Xbox
They sacrificed synergies for more customization and imo the best 2d character controll
Game seems very good, thanks ill give it a try when on sale since i loved enter
I’ve never heard anyone call it bad. I just personally dislike it since it’s just not my vibe.
That’s understandable and respectable. Not everyone can like the same game
I mean its a good game but for me- way to hard i beated it like 2 times (7 hours in) but I hate few things in this game there is almost no space, jumping on moving platforms while there is a horde of monster just is so unfair, beating a boss dosen't feel rewarding and as you said weapon system. Mostly this is just a skill isue.
Those are understandable complaints and I agree the most with the lack of space. When theres a lot of enemies on screen it's just almost a guarantee that you will take damage and you just sit there thinking "what could I have done?"
I really love exit the gungeon it's what i wished metal slug to be
This dude forces himself to never use the g sound for some reason.
sorry i was born in boston
Exit feels like a different game trying to hard to be enter the gungeon, however its definatly a good game
I loved exit the Gungeon, not as much as enter the Gungeon, but it's still good
Wait wtf i watched this whole video thinking it was a Hutts video 😭😭😭
i hope the realization didn't disappoint you
Exit is fun, it's just a lot easier than enter and has a lot less content since it was originally for apple arcade. If you're coming from Enter, you'll be able to kill most of it in a few days probably. Definitely worth the buy when it's on sale for 4 bucks
I found it easier to start compared to Enter, but i also had 100+ hours of Enter experience so i felt that carried over, but i do agree a LOT less content, but still a great time. I can't fathom playing it on mobile, unless you somehow have a controller connected
@@Burr_ I definitely waited for it to come out on xbox first
while I don’t think exit is as good as enter it’s no where near bad, it’s a decent game in it’s own right. Too bad people wrote it off for not being enter the gungeon 2.
I agree. It's a fantastic game for what it is. Love those short runs as well
Gungeon! Hell Yeah!
LOVE Gungeon!
*A* B U L L E T
ngl i like exit more than enter
Exit the Gungeon definitely worse than Enter the Gungeon, but its still a good and fun game, and its more chill than Enter the Gungeon, bcs you dont have to think about everything that much, just get in a run and play, sometimes entering a shop
I agree. I want to play more of it
I was here pog
Thank you for being here
@@Burr_ any time
the game is good, but compared to its brother😅
Exit the gungeon isn't bad
But
It doesn't add much to the game. It feels more like the opposite. There might be a few additions but in comparison to enter the gungeon, it feels like it is just missing more things.
I can see that point of view and agree. It would be near impossible for them to add as much as they had in Enter the Gungeon. The new things they had with gameplay and mini games was enough for me to be satisfied with it, but nothing like NEW comes to the game
Exit has the problem of being literally a mobile port. PC gamers don't like mobile ports.
Well this game is pretty darn good for a mobile game I’d say
@@Burr_ That doesn't really matter for the Steam crowd.
Literally nobody says EtG is bad? It has Overwhelmingly positive review score on steam....
I never said people said Enter the Gungeon was bad. I said that I was told Exit the Gungeon was a not so good game when I played a lot of Enter the Gungeon which made me think it was some kind of disaster which it's not. i think both games are fantastic, but Enter the Gungeon is one I enjoy more
Nobody said that though. How did you screw this up this badly???
900th like
Thanks for liking! And hopefully enjoying the video
Neither are good actually.
That is an opinion I don't agree with, but respect as it's yours. Not every game is made for everyone and that's fine
Enter the dungeon is also bad. The bullet patterns are trash.
Get good
It’s okay they’re both trash, play Isaac instead :)
It's an opinion I don't agree with, but won't try to change your mind
Isaac is better to me as well. But I won't "trash" the others 🎉. Happy gaming
@@jfbarabe6785 I was making a joke lol I don’t hate the game
