When I used to go to Barrow-in-Furness, I used to love the indoor market as it had seabrook crisps in hundreds of different flavours. Also, and I might be wrong, but was there not a shop that sold really good jeans in different colours and obscure sizes? I love when you do these videos. It brings back amazing memories for me. Especially as for the last few years my disabilities have stopped me travelling up there. Hopefully you are far enough from the horse fair so it doesn’t cause too much hassle with the traffic.

Disabilities, in the plural, have stopped me from travelling just about everywhere apart from local shops, now that the idiots in control have ruined the trains and made them unusable. And I've been to barrow in furness once or twice and they had the same paving flags as amsterdam in the netherlands, I know 'cos I've been there too.

There was Maelstrom a friend of mine worked there. I used to get most my jeans from there. We had Jeanster as well in Portland walk. Didn't last long.

I haven’t been back since most of my family that were there have either moved themselves or passed away and this is absolutely heartbreaking to see. That’s why it’s important we always pay Cash if and where we can . They want to move us into being a Cashless Society. Unfortunately if we just pay directly without Cash, we don’t realise just how much we are losing control of our own spending . Even Martin Lewis advises us to resist and pay in Cash. Just withdraw £50 and you will notice how you are becoming spending savvy, and are putting more thought into your purchases .

No worries for ,we ,the good people of planet earth ,have our own reset .With unconditional love , freedom ,creativity and unity ,we have already tipped the balance in favour of peace .Follow your heart ,follow your passion and most important ,learn to still your mind and know your thoughts .Really knowing yourself in these times is key .

Lived on Walney Island while Vickers finished off HMS Sovereign. My old man was part of the original crew (and made the commissioning cake). My only real memories of Barrow are seeing him working on a butchers stall in the market on Saturdays for a bit of extra cash (and meat) and learning to swim at the local baths. You can get to a Barrow and Whitehaven , Cockermouth etc from Gretna via Metal Bridge , we turn right when we get into Carlisle. Now I understand why we have been giving good old Barrow a miss. I really pray 🙏 Barrow picks up and starts fighting back , like Stockport and Altrincham.

The British high st has been struggling for years with internet shopping plus councils charging small businesses extortionate business rates it's hardly surprising to see many places closed down. We should all get out and shop more and support our local businesses. It's all too do online shopping but that's only profiting mainly big multinational companies and shareholders.

That’s so sad to see everywhere boarded up like that in such a relatively short space of time. Whilst the big store closures have happened elsewhere the huge own goal is the rampant vandalism which is kind of sealing the towns fate. I was in Lancaster today and it still has a great vibe with the large former BHS divided up into 3 newly opened restaurants. It’s tough to see how Barrow can turn this around

Hi Gareth , unfortunately loads of Towns in England have come to this, Ghost Towns. Just like in your Video of Barrow-In-Furness today most of the Shops and Businesses have either gone Bust, or left and are boarded up. I live in Bolton, I moved to Bolton when I got married 40 years ago. It was a lovely Town fantastic Market and Market Hall, besides all the little independent shops and businesses that were open and bustling, there was seven Department Stores. There is only one Department Store still open M&S, and I would say at least 80% of the small shops and businesses are gone. The Market is a shadow of it's former self and most of the shops in the Market Hall are shut. It really is a sad sorry state. Building are falling into disrepair and boarded up, it is so depressing, in fact I don't often go in now. Does this mean the High Street will eventually disappear, and all we will be left with is online shopping and retail parks. VERY SAD .

I always found it intriguing to have to take my passport in order to get access to the on site unit within the VSEL Shipyard. Happy times but sad to see the devastation in the retail area, very much like our local town Stockport. The charity shops are always worth a mooch around though - sign of the times. 🙁☹️

I remember visiting Barrow in 1978 to look around the shipyard and visit Invincible and Spartan (which they were building). The shipyard was fascinating seeing how they shaped and welded the plates to build the submarine hulls. At the end of the day the whistle went and you had a swarm of workers leaving the yard marching over the bridge. It was a staggering sight.
The hotel and the pubs were rather grim. I didn’t explore the pubs as the whole area seemed rather dodgy. Quite an experience.
BAe Systems now have a huge hall were they are building the ASTUTE Class. I guess that you probably worked on that. I had close connections with ASTUTE or B2TC something that I am extremity proud to have been deeply involved in the design, making the business case, with DPA and as customer in MoD MB. What was your role?
Next time that you go into town can you take some video of the shipyard? Do they still have swarms of workers leaving at the end of the day? You could link it with beer and bacon sandwiches.
Thanks for the video. Has changed and still looks bleak.

@@thomfisher4926 ahh my name sake. I did most of the studies for the B2TC (now ASTUTE) business case and ST2076. I later moved to MoD MB working in the DEC.

There's nothing like getting out and about my friend... Especially now that the weather has picked up... Hopefully we'll see more trips out into the beautiful Cumbrian Countryside... Sadly more shops are closing everyday Gaz... In a small shopping precinct like that... Once one of the larger shops like Debenhams closes... The surrounding businesses tend to suffer... This is mainly due to the loss of the expected footfall from Debenhams customers... Who would normally frequent the neighbouring stores... And unfortunately the downward spiral continues until it costs those remaining stores more money to run their business... Than they're taking in at the tills... So places like this will sadly become like ghost towns... Only when the economy starts to thrive... Will businesses start to return in numbers... Thanks for taking us all on your shopping trip pal... Having just experienced a huge difference between British raspberries from Lidl and Morrocan raspberries from the Co-op, it would be interesting to have some flavour tests on fruit from different countries. In the UK we have multiple sources for basic fruit and veg but they can be very different quality. Lidl stuff is usually great value and quality. There's a parade of shops near to my house in Nth London and in a short period of time, all the leases were coming to an end. The new landlord wanted to treble the rents so one by one, the business's left. That was 2 years ago and the shops are still empty, boarded up and looking terrible. You'd think the landlord would rather have something than nothing but it appears they are happy with nothing. Local authorities should come down on the landlords as these things can really drag areas down.

It was in all the Newspapers 📰 and that was particularly Barrow in Furness.we are fortunate enough to have a garden and we’re able to focus on that. But, people in the Barrow Terraces were not, many died of the Rona . They were families, and became more and more disadvantaged.
