I was thinking a year of community service. The community service would be mandatory (unpaid) nighttime security at target. Also their access to social media would be restricted during working hours so they couldn’t vlog it. You know, since spending the night at target is so fun for them.

We could spend hours talking about what we would do and eat and where we would hide. Obviously we thought it would be just the two of us at the park, able to ride all the rides (because of course they would leave all the rides running overnight and no one would be suspicious of two little kids riding on a freaking roller coaster when the park was closed)! 🤣🤣🤣 This cracks me up to think about now - we were so stupid!

Speaking as somebody who works in retail at a store not much unlike Target & with similar protocols:
    - Yes, the music stays on 24/7, unless there is a signal problem. The "radio" is not usually controlled by the store at all, but rather the district office and then streamed to the stores in that district.
My own store once got trapped on a children's music playlist for an entire weekend because of a mistake at the district office. It was a horrible weekend of the Frozen soundtrack and Dora The Explorer songs.
    - Most stores do have motion detectors. And when those detectors are set off and the alarm goes off, not only does the alarm company alert the local police, but the manager of the store is called as well and is fully expected to drive /back/ to that store in order to follow up with the police, do a sweep through the store, and file a report. It doesn't matter how far away that manager lives or what time of the night it is, once they get that call, they HAVE to follow up on it or they will get fired.
On top of that, the risk of the manager or the closing staff getting fired over this kind of "challenge" is incredibly huge because the corporate officials could have easily spun something like this as being the fault of the employees for not properly ensuring the building was fully vacant prior to closing. While yes, it is the responsibility of the employees to make sure the store is empty before leaving, we aren't trained to look behind every box and shelf for idiot vloggers, but that sort of distinction really does not matter to corporations. All a corporate office will see is "two "customers" were left in the building after the staff had locked up for the night, so obviously this is the employees fault."
People like this are not only incredibly stupid, but also annoyingly insensitive. Retail workers deal with enough shit, we don't need this kind of shit.

I would generally do that after the store closed, mainly because that is when I had time to do so. One night, unbeknownst to me, another employee unlocked the restrooms for a “customer” not too long before closing time. When I entered the men’s bathroom I immediately attempted to enter the single stall in there, but couldn’t because it was locked. Looking through the door crack, I could see someone in there. I announced myself and said we were closed but did not get a response. I then jumped up to look over the stall wall and saw a guy passed out on the toilet.
Left the bathroom and reported it to the shift lead, who called the police. 5 minutes later the police arrive go in and arrest the guy. Apparently this same dude had done the same thing the week before at another store nearby and got away with stealing some things. This time he was promptly arrested and hauled away. The only things he stole from us was a muffin and a drink. The cops also said he had heroin on him when they searched him.

I understand why they are facing such a long time tho. In this time and age the rule is to "up the anti" every time. If they were to go free or with a lower sentence, some "maverick" would do worse just to test the limits. As a retail worker who often does closing shifts I'm always wary of seeing out every last customer (we also have a "nr in&out" on the door) and checking out motion detector before closing. I don't want some sh*thead to wreck out the place or, worse, jump out once the store is closed with the crew still inside and potentially harm us.
Before lockdown we had a customer who, being old, didn't ear the closing message. I almost sh*t my pants when, goin to the back to change my clothes, I found him in the back of a shelf. The poor man was terrified as much as me, and it ended with a laugh and a pat in the back, but man I almost punched him LOL.
People need to find better way to be remembered.

they’re probably just going to get fined for this and serve no jail time. assuming neither of them have criminal records. i’m assuming they don’t because they were released from court on a 25,000 bond but they’re due to go back to court later this month. they’re gonna end up spending a lot of money on lawyer fees alongside the fines. the woman was asked if she regretted doing the stunt outside of court and she said she didn’t. this is strange to me because i can’t imagine they made enough money from the video to cover even a fraction of the money they’re going to have to pay to their lawyer/the court. they’re gonna get in trouble for the trespassing and also for setting off the alarm, making police waste their time going over to the target to see what’s going on.

Visiting any store that isn't of the mom and pop variety is an entirely manufactured experience. It's not live radio. Where each customer ends up shopping, is for the most part, controlled by what products are placed where.
It's unreal how well they can predict what will work best where. The level of psych and crap that goes into planograms (or whatever resets are called these days) is both interesting and creepy.

While I do agree about how unfair the sentencing is in this country, I can guarantee you the harsh sentencing is there for show. With the way challenges like devious licks and tide pods blew up once they got popular, target was probably afraid of this couple kicking off another popular string of criminal tiktok challenges, and so they said, "scare the shit out of them." There's plenty of places that have overnight staff restocking, unloading, taking down and putting up new signage and sales. If retailers don't want to have to pay for even more security until the challenge dies down, the cheapest and easiest thing to do is to make an extreme example out of this couple to deter anyone else from trying. It sucks for this couple to be the example, but that's why most people fake this shit or don't do it in the first place. They're lucky they got stopped here cause if this challenge took off in popularity and had tons of copycats, retailers could be vengeful and petty and sue the couple for damages for starting this whole thing in the first place.

One night I was doing a walk-thru making sure everyone had left. Upon entering the bathroom i found a teen who was trying to stay unnoticed so he could stay after we closed. He was trespassed indefinitely. Some Days we had as few as 3 people working while other days roughly 15 or so. Now I work alone in a store and the bathroom gets locked up an hour before i close. I agree that up to 7 years of prison time is outrageous, and that it should probably just be a large fine, probation, maybe some community service. Hell, maybe even a few months in county, but not 7 years in prison. They did admit they were expecting a fine though, maybe the threat of up to 7 years in prison is to discourage any other vloggers who don't think a fine is a big enough deal to NOT spend the night in a target. That sounds like a terrible experience to risk jail time for, cus it's not like you can use any of the products in the store without adding larceny to their list of charges. I mean, far worse/more ignorant things have been done to get clicks and views.

If someone has like the max score (I think 5 idk) they're getting smoked like they're getting hit with the max but some regular never been in trouble person no way they getting the max or even close unless they go off on the judge or some other extenuating circumstances

At the Target in my town, the store is almost never empty. The night crew does all the unloading and stocking and they're locked inside the store.
Also, these people should get at least a couple months in jail just for being obnoxious, and a couple more months for being idiots that are wasting people's time and causing unnecessary headaches for the people who work at this store. Six months seems entirely fair to me (they won't serve the whole sentence anyway).
It's easy to say "they face up to 7 years in prison" and act like that's excessive, however that's the maximum sentence which is never given to first time offenders, and they're likely to get a WAY lighter sentence. Plus, unless you're a real piece of shit, you're not going to serve the whole sentence. The law is "excessive" for exactly that reason.
