Rob Thomas, vocals and most importantly, songwriter. He wrote this for Carlos Santana. When he took it to Carlos and sang it, Carlos only agreed to record it if…. Rob did the vocals. The woman in the car and apartment, is Rob’s wife Marisol.
I went to a Santana concert, about halfway through their set I looked at the back of the stage and saw a man wearing blue jeans with a guitar sneak in, plug in his guitar and started jamming. I told my friends Eric Clapton just joined the band, everybody thought I was crazy. 3 songs later Carlos said "I'd like to introduce my friend that stopped by to jam with us, Mr. Eric Clapton. That was so awesome, they did some of Clapton's great songs and Santana's songs. Eric and Carlos side by side making their guitars sing.
The song you mentioned at the beginning it’s “Maria, Maria”, of course a Santana song. A reaction to this one would be great too. And no, it’s not a rap song…. They took the riff from Carlos.
@@othello106 Actually, I believe the entire album features guest performers. Santana wrote the music and the guest vocalists wrote the lyrics. Rob Thomas is a very talented writer and singer. You need to listen to the song he wrote for his wife and her struggle with with various illnesses. The song is “Her Diamonds” Is an amazing song.
Rob Thomas was actually a far bigger name (as lead singer for Matchbox 20) than Santana was at the time this came out. This was a huge comeback album for Carlos, with different singers featured throughout the album.
Oh come on....A Bigger Name? Really?? Yes .....Rob Thomas and MB 20 were very hot at the time this came out.....and yes the album was a comeback for Santana. Rob Thomas wrote the lyrics to the song- “Smooth”with another guy (can’t remember his name) and brought it to Carlos Santana who I think wrote the music(?).
Yes, the "you remind of a Westside story" (Maria, Maria) is a Santana song. It is off the same album as this song. I cannot recall who the featured vocalist was.
