    Grew up in rural North Island.
    Had an old Maori neighbour (Poto, God rest his soul) who i used to visit on the daily.
    He had pictures of his father and Grandfather with some of the birds they used to hunt together.
    He would tell me stories about how his father was sad and torn to watch the extinction of birds in his area. To see men destroy the very thing they rely on.
    He also spoke about the fact that if European Men had not bought cattle, sheep and pigs, the Maori probably would have starved out since the had cleared the land of food and had to go to the ocean to eat. That was an eye opener.
    Although he understood the reverence of a Chiefs cloak, did it have to be used with the smallest feathers from a sacred Kiwi.
    He used to pause, like in deep thought,when speaking about this subject, I always respected this Man as a father figure, and it was the first Man I'd seen weep talking about his love for nature.
    Sorry about the rant, just bought back memories, this video did...thank you Sir.

    If New Zealand and Madagascar weren’t colonized by human, it would be a very specific island with a lot of exotic creatures

    Thankyou Tui1x for an oh so sad look back at what was once ... Heartening to know that like in Australia many people are devoted to preventing further extinction of native species. Can you imagine hearing the dawn chorus before the arrival of humans and their impact on the land ?

    It is heart-wrenching. All the long way through evolution and then... as if they would not have a right to be here. When the birds fall silent, what do we want to hear?

    There were so many species of birds in the pre Polynesian days the people would sail from island to island following the birds different species went to different islands to nest or feed and the pre Polynesian people knew this and inhabited the pacific that way but always kept the populations at a good number. When the Polynesian arrived the were friendly with the locals and did what was required to stay but they were big breeders and in a few short generations had out breed the locals and would kill the rest then they would need more food and killed out 1000s of species. Then they couldn't visit there nabours because the birds they followed had gone

    The vast majority of these were pushed to needless extinction by the Maori through overhunting and habitat destruction. It's hard to have any respect for a culture that intentionally caused so much irreparable destruction, and yet people think the Europeans are the only ones to blame.

      It might not really be a Yellowhammer, yet the beak and body structure of the yellowhammer is very different compare with this small little bird that is displayed in the background of this video. The small little bird in this video actually reminds me of a thrush species cause of its beak and similar body.

    Why are there so mush extinct birds in New Zealand? How come?

    • @huntaway1256
      @huntaway1256 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They introduced a lot of rodents like rats and stokes only land mammal in New Zealand before humans were bats and most of these birds layed eggs on the ground and in the case of the hawks humans killed all the moas and that was their food sauce

    New Zealand is where I come from and i absolutely love it but sadly things go wrong. Our culture and family’s bring happiness and joy and when we do that we spread kindness and love….Soon then our animals go extinct since white people came and brought predators (animals, and I’m not trying to be racist)our land was supposed to be snake , spider , crocodile free until they came :c but our land still supports everyone who comes to join

    Why are Brown Goshawk on this list? From what I can find they’re a bird alive and well in Australia, with no fossils found here
    Edit: Guess the author of the photo collection believes Norfolk Island is part of NZ

    • @Tui1x
      @Tui1x  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, yes! I'm not sure why they added it, but that's what prompted me to include it. They appear to be alive in Australia, but are still considered extinct in New Zealand.

    • @SuperHuia
      @SuperHuia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      while Norfolk lsland is Australian territory politically it is nonetheless geographically and biologically part of the NZ archipelago of many hundreds of islands. Hence its inclusion as with Australian held Maquarie Island and its species.

      Bird bones don't generally fossiluze due to them being hollow and very brittle.
