    gentl.mn/aviator-guide
    Aviator sunglasses were developed by Bausch and Laumb in 1936 and were originally meant for pilots. Pilots had complained about the sunlight at high altitudes and so Bausch and Lomb wanted something that covered the eyes completely so pilots could focus on what's going on without being blinded by the sudden burst of sunlight.
    To achieve this effect, they had the hallmark teardrop shape which allowed the sunglasses to sit very close to the face without any gaps and keep the eyes covered at all times. During the war, many servicemen wore them and even Gen. McArthur became well-known and eventually, Hollywood picked up on it and it became much more popular.
    Also, when soldiers came back from the war and they wore them, they had a certain military cache which helped to engrain them as a desirable sunglass in the general population.
    If there's one movie that's associated with Aviators, it's most likely top gun. Lead actors Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer wore them in various situations and it became an iconic style that everybody wanted to have at the time.
    What makes aviators, aviators? Technically, it's the size. You want an area out of your lenses that's about three times as large as your eyeballs. The second hallmark is the thin metal frames with a triple bridge or a double bridge. You want either a cable or bayonette ear piece and you want adjustable nose pads. Of course, you want a tear drop shape to cover the eye and you want a convex lens.
    So who can wear aviators? Ideally, people with oval, square and heart-shaped faces look really good with them. At least, that's true for traditional sunglasses.
    In general, aviators work really well with all kinds of casual outfits and are definitely a statement piece. Classic finishes include gold, chrome, or gunmetal. Apart from that, you can also find them in plastic, acetate, or horn, but the most traditional way is a metal frame in gold, brown, or green lenses.
    What aviators should you buy? Basically, the vintage Bausch and Lomb are the most original versions you can find but you have to go to eBay, vintage stores, or flea markets to find the real deal.
    Of course, sometimes the lenses will be scratched but if you go to the optician, they can exchange them. Another options would be Ray-Bans, which I'm wearing here, right now. This is a more modern shape with less of a tear drop, you can also find the original shape from them. They're usually quite pricey so people sometimes want to go with different brands.
    Personally, my favorite aviators are from Randolph Engineering, they're American-made, rather heavy and solid. The Ray-Bans have lasted for way over five years and they're still going strong. With polarized lenses, they're just very functional and they look stylish.
    In case you're intimidated by aviators, bear in mind, there are lots of different styles and materials and I truly believe that there is a pair of aviators for every taste, no matter if you like it bold or more subtle.

      @danbarb9728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What do you mean with balance his face shape? That particular model dont look good on him because it has that wooden part which makes it looking fat on the small sized aviator. His aviators looking very small for that model almost like the ray ban cockpit

    One more mistake to avoid: getting aviators that are too small for your face and/or don't suit you

    • @andr3970
      @andr3970 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’m 20 years old and i buy the 52mm lens because my face is small. Most of aviators are so big for my face and I end looking like a fly. But the 52mm fits me very good.

      Yep, typically for sunglasses you should go with what matches the nose-to-temple width for the frame and the lenses should just barely cover your eyebrows.

    You've forgot to mention American Optical both the Original Pilot and General models. The true aviator sunglasses, actually worn and beloved by the US military pilots, made in America, great alternative to modern Italian Ray Bans and also reasonably priced

    • @dat_spartan_gamer7322
      @dat_spartan_gamer7322 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Randolph's have been standard issue eyeware for all american military aviators since 1978. american opticals are good too

    • @BC08
      @BC08 ปีที่แล้ว

      American Optical actually designed the first aviators, not Bausch & Lomb. AO also designed the HGU4-P squared aviators that went to the moon.
      No sunglasses company has more history in America than AO - Randolph leap frogged AO in quality but AO is as iconic as it gets.
      PS. JFK’s “Ray-Bans” were American Optical Saratogas which AO recently brought back. Made in America too…

    I have a very angular face (high cheekbones and distinct jawline) and I'm going to buy a pair of AO original pilot and rayban aviators. For the raybans, I'm gonna get the gold frame green lens combo, but I'm not sure whether to do the same with the AO. I may get the grey lens.

    • @danbarb9728
      @danbarb9728 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, at least they dont offer a model right now similar to the ones in the movie which are similar to the ray ban aviator, just look at the top gun pictures and see yourself.

    • @larrysmith6797
      @larrysmith6797 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cruise wore Randolph Concorde with AGX lenses. Randolph Engineering calls their teardrop shape glasses Concorde, Ray Ban calls theirs Aviators. Concordes are current Randolph Engineering production. Randolph Aviators have a more rectangular shape and are the design currently issued to military pilots. The teardrop shape glasses were not issued to Navy or Air Force pilots in the '80s when Top Gun was released (1986). You can see both on Randloph Engineering's website.

    • @danbarb9728
      @danbarb9728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Again, the concorde model looks totally different to the one cruise was using in the movie. The only identical looking model is the aviator from ray ban

    IIRC aviators aren't supposed to have polarisation, it messess with your ability to read the cockpit gauges.

    • @NWA744
      @NWA744 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cockpit windows are also polarized to an extent which causes a rainbow effect when viewed through polarized lenses.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The big deal is modern cockpit display screens. Polarized lenses play havoc with those. Traditional needle-pointer gauges are just physical objects like anything else, so a plane equipped with those will be just like any physical speedometer in a car - no problem. Of course, now iPad Syndrome is hitting the cars too so the real gauges are all getting replaced with screens. But misreading your speedometer may result in a ticket; misreading your airspeed indicator may result in a smoking crater.

    I still have a pair of aviators that I got over twenty years ago. It makes my nose and ears start to hurt just thinking about how heavy those things are. They just crush the nose after a few hours.

      mrtodd3620
      I'm sure that you can get lighter ones. But my old style ones with steel frames and glass lenses are pretty heavy. They would be a lot better if they distributed the weight across the nose instead of the old pads.

    • @jerm2867
      @jerm2867 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @dinuguan510
      @dinuguan510 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but a pilot requires optical perfection.... i.e. glass. Plastic lenses like Oakleys have no business in an aviator. Ever heard of a Nikon or Canon lens made of plastic? Me neither.

    Bou did you miss the boat on this video. I am actually surprised that you failed to mention American Optical aviator sunglasses, which have been making pilot sunglasses since the era of biplanes. Also, they were worn by all Apollo astronauts, the military issued them for decades, and... they are American made. Randolph engineering is a Johnny come lately that while they make good sunglasses, they are not superior to what American Optical puts out for around 149 dollars.
