  • Check out the second test with internal cup upside down. • Multi Fuel Testing of ... Several people asked what the little metal tray/dish that comes with the 20 dollar eBay Wood Gas stove does. I really didn't know but others said it holds either alcohol or Esbit type fuel tabs. Another person asked if it would work with a Traingia burner. I tested both the metal try and Traingia burner using denatured alcohol for the first time. The burner worked well however the metal try not as god though this wasn't a scientific test and it was done during a snow storm.

    Brother...flip the inside piece that you put the bowl on. That piece can either be put in the way you did for wood or flipped to raise the fire. That brings the bowl up higher and closer to the bottom of your tea pot.

    I just purchased one of these. The instructions say to flip the little insert upside down so the alcohol cup is closer to the top. I haven't tried alcohol yet, but flipping the insert upside down works perfectly! :) The design is great! The burn of the alcohol will be a lot more efficient.

    Thanks for taking us along on your hike. It was beautiful out there! That's a nice little stove. Seems to be a clone of the SilverFire Scout stove, at a much more reasonable price. I made my alcohol burner stove following the "Fancy Feast" pattern on a TH-cam video, and made a windscreen for it out of two beer cans. It works really well. Not as hardy or as heavy as yours, though. I'm looking forward to seeing how the tabs work. I've never tried them.

    Hello there,
    Just wanted to send a quick message to say I have really enjoyed watching your videos. Pretty much very down-to-earth, realistic, and what the average guy like myself can enjoy.
    Always look forward to the "sacred bacon." Usually, I use the sacred bacon as a form or grease on the cast iron fry pan when cooking some tasty moose steaks or sausages in the woods. Nothing outs a better taste on woods cooking than bacon.
    Looking forward to more interesting videos of your adventures.
    All the best.

    Hi Woodswalker,
    great Video. I like your happy attitude.
    In the cold Trangia burners need some drops of Alcohol spilled on top of the side rim or body. Thus it will heat up the alcohol inside a little bit. It helps starting the alcohol to vapourize out of the jet holes.
    An additional windshield helps to reduce the amount of alcohol needed for each boil a lot. Especially under those windy circumstances.
    As being said, the middle part of the Lixada stove needs to be put upside down to have that sweet spot if one inch for the trangia.
    Try the Fancy Feast Stove by Hiram Cook. It is much more fuel efficient than the Trangia stoves. And it is a stove stand on its own. so you can reduce kit weight through using a pot, a windshield and the burner only.
    Greetings from Germany!
    Stefan

    A little alcohol stove is a must-have accessory for the wood gas stove. Lets you make a quick cup of tea/coffee/hot meal or sterilize water without building a wood fire. Flipping the inside basket, as others have mentioned, gives you a bit of heat control. Some things cook better on lower heat (like eggs), and some alcohol burners work better closer or farther from the pot bottom. You can also flip the alcohol/solid fuel cup over to adjust you burn height, I've built a number of beer can stoves and use two just for my wood gas stove. One burns hotter with a shorter burn time, about 18 minutes, and one burns a bit cooler but has a 30+ minute burn time; good for simmering or keeping the coffee hot. I set the alcohol burners in the little cup that came with the stove to use as a priming cup. All-in-all, a great system; very versatile.
    Thanks for all of your video's,,, and KEEP THE BACON SACRED!

    I have a warning for you. I did the exact same setup using the Trangia that you did, but on a hot day. After a minute or so the gasification process kicked in and the stove took off like a jet engine, burning up all the alcohol in about a minute and creating a very dangerous situation. I suppose that didn't happen to you because it was much cooler weather.

    +1 in flipping the solid fuel dish inside the stove to raise the trangia. It'd probably boil like a mad man then. I think for solid fuel I've seen the stove set up as normal. The dish goes on top sort of covering or filling the hole the wood would be in. This puts the fuel tab just a little below the pot. Similar to the set up catering companies use.

    • @MegaWoodswalker

    Sorry if someone already suggested this, I haven't read all the comments, but I'd have found something like an upside-down empty can of some sort as a platform for the stove to raise it hire in the burn chamber of the gasifier stove. I think I've heard its best to have a smaller gap between the alcohol stove and the pot for best fuel efficiency. Though I guess it works fine the way you did it with the trangia.

    Wild turkeys forage for acorns in the snow. Winter time it takes much longer to get liquid to a boil. You will need at least double that amount of alcohol for that amount of water. In warm weather it takes 1 ounce for 1 cup of water. So in winter it is going to take much more and longer time.

  • @MrWmburr7
    @MrWmburr7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have to get the alcohol dish within about an inch of the bottom of the pot for maximum efficiency. Same for the Trangia burner. You accomplish this by flipping the burn chamber upside down inside the double wall ring. It will then be at the optimal height.

    I laugh at people who say you need to let water boil for 10 minutes. Water borne disease causing parasites and bacteria are rapidly killed in water at 140F, most viruses at 150F. By the time your water hits a boil it's at 212F and has spent a few minutes at and above the temp required for pasteurization. Really the only reason to hit a boil is for a visual indication that your water has reached a certain temp, since most people don't carry kitchen thermometers in their packs. At 10K ft the boiling point is 192F (and lower as you go higher) so to be very safe you might want to leave the water boiling for a minute but any longer than that is just wasting fuel.

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. About 156 F just about everything dies which could hurt someone drinking water. I think there is a wax thing in a little container which melts once something is within the pasteurization zone. I was going to get one for my solar over. Thanks for watching!

    You have to flip the coal holder in the bottom upside down to make the alcohol pan closer to top. Try it it was in the description pictures on the one that I bought on Amazon so if I hadn't have seen those pictures I would have never figured it out myself. If the flame would have been closer to your pot of boiling water it would have been boiling halfway through the denatured alcohol burning out.
