you know things are bad when Oblivion NPC's are prettier than some of these new game characters Edit: welcome to the channel for those of you who saw the asmongold stream, and thank you for sharing your thoughts here with me as well ❤
I think it's a phase. A very long phase, make no mistake. But nearing 40 years old there is no way I can still enjoy the strategy games I loved in the 90s. Because the challanges are dominated at first try now, and the gameplay variety is shallow. Maybe I played only a few matches on Civilization 6 compared to the thousand of hours spent on Civ5, but I have to admit that Civ5 gameplay isn't as variated where in Civ6 some leaders change the standard game rules entirely. I also loved the soudtracks but I can listen those elsewhere. I love my 90s games but they can't be the best forever
I'm so glad more people are realizing that older games are good and that its not because of nostalgia. Older games were made to be entertainment and actual GAMES
A few years ago I thought that I had just lost my love of playing video games and then a friend gifted me the original resident evil 4 and in the past year I've played so many retro games because I discovered I didn't hate games, I just hate most newer games.
Corporations ruin everything they touch. Perhaps accepting this Wealth Distribution system based on Greed and Competition was a bad idea after all (it definitely was). It's not like the real Leftists didn't warn us before the Fascist uprisings a century ago, let alone people like me trying to get people in the 80's to understand how this road is always paved and how the 80's "neo-liberalism" (nothing to do with Liberalism) was just history rhyming all over again.
@@astralandreid : When Greed becomes the motivator, everything suffers greatly then withers away. Including the wealth of the greedy. Sometimes lastly, but always most spectacularly.
I miss the economy before the 80's. We had a hard time in the 70's because Nixon began selling of our manufacturing jobs overseas.. But back then a weekend job was enough to pay ones own way through a four year college, and a full time minimum wage job was enough to buy a house a 20 minute drive from downtown San Fransisco. We had the world's #1 public school system before the 80's too, & small businesses were everywhere!
There’s clear advantages when you play older games on a newer PC. 1. Must more affordable. 2. They take significantly less space on your hard drive. 3. They run smooth as butter.
4. Most important of them all: you can play them with a garbage PC. No need to have an overpriced high end PC to run a poorly optimized, bugs infested, microtransactions plagued, trash games from today.
5. And many of they are real games, meaning real stories and storytelling - focusing on gameplay. Not focus on micro-transactions, paying for being able to play multiplayer/online and no focus on in-game equality without a story, but instead focusing on the actual story. This video of Angelikatosh describes it in a good way, in my opinion. I have no problem with any character with a good story and gameplay. But not with a artificially unrealistically designed character randomly inserted without a story - actually not with any character without a story. One example is Battlefield V, where non-historical accurate characters appears without any backstory or explanation. When the gamers of Battlefield-series expect to play in a fictional, but somewhat historical accurate, game. There is a reason some good games from say 30 years ago have better gameplay than modern games. They had to have this. Story, background music, dialogue because of the limits in graphical hardware. Modern games, that are not good, focus on graphics, micro transactions and some kind of equality that the people buying the games don´t want. Br //M
I like how I can map old games' controls to modern control surfaces.. so I can play 90's flight sims with modern VKB sticks (which is way better than my Sidewinder 3D pro from back in the day).
Here's my reasons for sticking to old games. (And with that I mean playing old games I haven't played before. Not playing the same games over and over. I always prefer something new over nostalgia. I seem to be alot less nostalgic in general than most people.): 1) They're actually complete, polished and have their bugs fixed. 2) They run very well on a cheap PC. 3) They're past the hype/hate phase, so the ratings are more reliable. 4) They're dirt cheap. 5) No modern nonsense like not working without an internet connection or having to register somewhere. 6) Pay once and then actually fully own the game. You just get a much better deal overall and with less headaches.
So. Much. Truth. I'd also like to add that many of these older games have fun mods you can find and trainers that make the game easy and stress-free to enjoy.
Sorry for being late to the party! But you mentioned that a cheap PC can run most old games nowadays. I'm trying to get into PC Gaming without spending too much. How much do you think I need to spend to ONLY play games from 2015 and lower?
@@Sakai2001 my cousin has an i3 gen 7 , 8gb ram and a gtx 1050ti and he could even play assassin Valhalla at low settings, this config would easily run games before 2015 smoothly, but get yourself an ssd in case you wanted to play some esports like Valorant because loading times are so slow in Valorant on an hdd
Normalization. It's very powerful and can be very dangerous to society and a silent killer. Everything wrong right now will soon be normalized, it'll get worse and no one will know or care so long as people don't do anything to stop it.
Mobile gaming changed our ideas of what's acceptable. Today it's normal for a game to treat its players as addicts and enable their addiction and then profit off of it
Oblivion was just about the literal start of DLC, unfortunately. I just pirated my horse armor. Most Oblivion DLC was just an extra knife or whatever. They had the Knights of the Nine or whatever that had a quest at least, but I don't remember that being very long. I thought DLC was shit when that came out, and I haven't really changed my mind. Some games can't really even be properly backed up and preserved now since it's difficult to get all the updates or DLC for it. Games aren't even complete anymore.
People had more of a will to stand up to those things back then. Today we trade quality for convenience rather than quality over convenience. People need to start recognizing that.
My grandmother survived the Great Depression, gave birth to 18 children and raised 33 children. She could pull a hot pot out of an oven without mitts or towels. She could grab a chicken in each hand give them a flip and instantly break both of their necks, and have them fried up ready to eat in an hour. Made pies out of anything and everything, made new clothes from scraps. Scrubbed, cleaned, cooked, sewed and tended sick children all day every day for decades. Cried when I graduated college (I was the first of her grandchildren to do so) and said it had all been worth it because the future would be better than the past. She was old fashioned and traditional, and people would call her misogynist and racist today. The woman who told me to be a good boy and not be cruel to women, and to not call people bad things just because of what color they were because people should be judged for who they are and not what they are. And she never, ever insisted any of her daughters, granddaughters etc. had to be like her, she just made sure they could be if they wanted to. She had to get one of her boys or grandsons to take out the trash for her because it was too heavy. Couldn't pull start a lawnmower. My dad and I would have to fix her house every time we visited. Strongest woman I ever knew. Her blood was battery acid. She survived so much shit that would destroy me and most other modern people. She would not be impressed by contemporary depictions of female power. And she'd probably laugh at most contemporary tradwives but more in the way a pro laughs at a rookie. I'm convinced most creators of modern media have never seen a strong woman and don't know how to depict one.
Strong women in media these days=arrogant, selfish, entitled and flippant. The issue is that many game devs are like that and they don't see the problems with this behavior. To them the idea of a strong woman who is a loving mother and wife is sexist and oppressive. They can't grasp toughness on this level, only in infantile "tough chick" terms.
@@maineportland4917There is no need to put down different types of strong women or push women into a single mold (and the one you personally select). Just let people be. Everyone is different.
@@jadziyadax1073 That's the exact opposite of my point. Im not putting anyone into a single mold, geme devs and movie/tv shows do that. Everyone has to be a warrior and physically capable. Like the "feminist" bs about dont be a princess, be a warrior/girlboss They are the ones trying to tell women what they should be and if you prefer traditional values you are "brainwashed" and "oppressed". But good writing would require talent and nuance.
@@jadziyadax1073 The types of "strong women" he mentioned are not "strong". They're just toxic, sexist, often times now also racist (against white men specifically), and there is no reason to defend it. I'm 100% sure you would not be defensive over really toxic men in the way you're trying to do here. Anyone who acts like that is trash and doesn't benefit society in any way.
@@maineportland4917I really like dragon age inquisition girls because they are very strong, yet they do have a soft side. Like Cassandra, she's a true warrior, but on her romance quest, you need to bring flowers to her and read poetry.
The sound of the wc3 menu chains dropping down is literally my favorite noise in history. I started playing wc3 when I was 5, and it truly is the greatest of all time
Indeed! I've added a bunch of WC3-sounds to the library of my D&D VTT. When someone gets Enlarged, they yell "for Khaz Modan!", or when a Barbarian rage they go all orc bloodlust "arhYarRAlyrglarg!" My players love it.
If you're not enjoying modern gaming, here's a list of retro video games that I think everyone should play through at least once (I consider any game before the HD era in the 7th generation as retro): 1. Resident Evil 4 (2005) 2. Super Metroid 3. Super Mario Bros 3 4. Ninja Gaiden Black 5. Metal Gear Solid 1-3 6. Chrono Trigger 7. Metroid Prime 8. Devil May Cry 1&3 9. A Link to the Past 10. Ocarina of Time 11. Rondo of Blood. 12. Resident Evil 1 (1996) & Remake (2002) 13. Half Life 2 14. Deus Ex 15. Doom (1993) 16. Final Fantasy VI & VII (1997) & X 17. Resident Evil 2 (1998) 18. Silent Hill 2 (2001) 19. GTA Vice City & San Andreas 20. Super Mario World 21. Super Mario 64 22. Donkey Kong Country 2 23. Yoshi's Island There are amazing games from the 7th generation as well (it's one of my favorite gens) but I don't really consider them retro. As someone who started gaming in the 3rd generation, I have to say, that run from the 4th generation to the 7th generation (1990 to 2011) is unmatched IMO. I honestly believe video games have already peaked during that run.
I'd argue that modern AAA gaming certainly is. Indie and AA is where it is at. It has all the advances of the past two decades without all the corporate bloat and BS.
@@rattlehead999 True, but there's so much that enough of them are better than most AAA. And I don't know if I'd consider Elden Ring AA, that was AAA in my mind (sometimes even they buck the trend).
Baldur's Gate 3 is a more than welcome break to all that post-modern bullshit. Incredibly beautiful, real characters, zero microtransactions, complete story without DLC.
BG3 has conflicts between characters, making them much more interesting because they have different viewpoints. For god sake, Baezel or Shart will end up being killed unless you intervene. And all those endings, you can be a goody two shoes or literally murder the whole world.
Another thing that breaks immersion in modern games is UI. They all have a modern look while old games are themed like Age Of Empire, Diablo II, Caesar/Pharaoh...
Even Diablo 4's UI sucks ass, it doesn't even LOOK like Diablo anymore. 3 Also doesn't, it really just kind of looks like a Diablo 2 mod made by completely different people (I mean, it was, but still).
Oh man, you’re speaking my language! Thinking back on old games from id, Westwood, and Blizzard, every single menu item, scroll bar, and button was crafted with a passion and talent that is nearly unheard of today. Starfield, I think, is the worst example of low-effort UI that I’ve ever seen. Todd Howard took one look at the Windows Modern Settings App, and told his artists to make his game look like that. Utterly devoid of all soul and creativity.
As a female gamer, I agree with your points so much. I get message from my Steam friends regularly asking "You're still playing Cyberpunk 2077?", and I'm like, hell yeah. It's so easy to make my character look so good in this game, especially with outfit mods. I think so many devs have forgotten the fact that many women around the world grew up playing barbies when they were kids. We love dressing up our characters, making them look pretty. And if we can't customize our female characters in the game, we still want them to look beautiful while being badass at the same time. That's like the ultimate female power fantasy.
This reminds me of a comment I saw on a video once. The op said he had a friend who didn't want to follow societal patterns when raising his daugther, so he gave her toy cars instead of dolls. But she ended up treating the toy cars like baby dolls (and putting them to bed and tucking them in, etc)... Some people forget we have instincs that are deeply ingrained into our DNA.
I’ve only played Cyberpunk 2077 one time, right at launch week, and it was an amazing experience. Maybe not the greatest game ever made, but great game anyway. I only encountered one almost game breaking bug too. I’ll probably play it again soon.
It the nostalgia talking, I grew up with a NES and I prefer modern games. You just pick the obviously good. I can't go back to anything from the late 90s and 2000s except for Resident evil.
@@axiss5840 not a problem, facts. Modern gaming added amazing quality of life features plus better acting and stories that just couldn't be told by just text or limited dialogue

Whenever I think back to Oblivion, I always think it's cozy too. Particularly Chorrol, like a place you could just fall asleep anywhere in that city :)
Oblivion and chill 😊 guess it's because I've played it so many times I just look for these things in-game. Definitely Anvil, I think my top three are the great hall in Cloud Ruler Temple, the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary and the Bloated Float by the waterfront. Definitely, my favorite sleep locations 😅
I agree with most of what was said here. I've said this on stream a few times, but my gaming library is large enough that assuming no new games ever came out from now on, I'd have enough games to cycle through and not be bored for the rest of my life. Growing older has made me understand that I only benefit from not buying a game on release in waiting to see not only is it good or bad, but also how the developers patch it. Preorders and day one players are paid beta testers. Unless you are a graphics snob, which I don't think you or I are, mechanically older games in general have more to offer. With RPGs specifically, they aim for more of a tabletop simulation aspect, as opposed to the more modern action-adventure focus. Honestly? I like both. But I'm not devastated anymore if a new game I like doesn't come out, or a new game that comes out isn't for me. I'm not the target audience and that's ok.
There's something very funny about the sentiment, not just in this comment but in others, about quality control and patches on a video from a channel that is primarily about Bethesda games. And I say that as someone who absolutely loves Bethesda games. Obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have found this channel.
@@Angelikatosh Yep that was a MAJOR oof on Ubisoft's part. They should've waited to patch the game until a few months AFTER everyone got their early access time in and the few days head start they had vs everyone else in terms of progression had normalized. Then it wouldn't have felt like they wasted their money. The sad part is that one of the rewards they doled out as an apology was a skin/outfit for the game that couldn't even be used because it wasn't compatible with the newer game version!! It's a shame really because Outlaws was the first SW game in a long time that wasn't published by EA and although Ubisoft hasn't been much better recently in terms of people having faith in them as developers, I was really looking forward to playing it, but the ugly look they gave the protagonist and the myriad of frame rate issues and repetitive stealth portions and puzzles you have to solve in order to progress really turned me off...I want no part of that game now
@@Computerspieler64 So, I need to clarify that I'm not normal and I have THOUSANDS of games, that is not an exaggeration. What is relatively new to me as an individual doesn't have to be recently produced.

If these tools are applied correctly, it could benefit all of us greatly.
As someone who have played games since early 80s i think its been rapidly going down hill sometime after 2010 or so, i rarely find modern games all that good or well written.
Yup, I'm getting into PC Engine/ TurboGrafx games now, since I missed out on them as a kid. I haven't even thought about AAA games since basically covid.
Racism can make games more interesting. Imagine playing Skyrim, and having to do quests in a city where you're not welcome because of your race. Imagine the guards at the gates of Solitude aggressively not letting you in, and you having to figure out another way into the city. You might even be limited to only wander around in the city at night with stealth. It would open up so many interesting gameplay possibilities, and it would make different races more interesting and meaningful, and add a lot of replayability to the game, and maybe even a lot more depth to the game's world. Heck, it would even end up being a great way to illustrate why racism is bad.
EXLUSION IS ACTUALLY GOOD, i am serious, morrowind is a much better game because you cant do everything like join every house every guild and do all the quests, instead of spending 100 hours on "must do" content, just spent 30 hours and then make a new character.
Racism in stories has ALWAYS been a way to illustrate why racism is a bad thing. I mean Dragon Age did it with elves and using slurs like "Knife-ear". You'd ultimately end up feeling bad for them and wanting to help. Putting reasons to dislike villains and antagonists is not a bad thing as you SHOULD be encouraged to dislike them and think what they're doing is wrong.
Surely, the entire concept of Workd of Warcraft is based on the premise that the Alliance factions (races) and the Horde factions (also races) don’t get along. I guess WoW should be flushed down the toilet for so much hate mongering.
Dev here. A big part of the reason games are the way they are is because we've hired people into Diversity and Inclusion roles. And arguing with the D&I folks = a talk with HR. ...on top of that, you get bigger bonuses if you get rated higher on "cultural values". I think things are finally starting to turn around now tho -I can see the cracks forming. Execs are paying attention to the type of games and movies that are failing and succeeding, and money ultimately wins.
yeah so many people in the industry leak stuff and say its worse than we thought, especially in ubisoft but eventually they get fired because the games dont sell. Then the rats jump the sinking ship and go to another one, so they fail upwards. Seems the only solution is to stay indie.
It's always about money, that's what every business/company (that isn't a recognised/registered charity) is all about. The sole purpose of a business is to return profit to shareholders... These Diversity people are basically nutjobs who demand equality of outcome which itself doesn't make sense. They are also trying to gender swap already well established IPs, such as forcing a female James Bond and female lead remakes we've seen such as Ghostbusters, etc. Ultimately these attempts offend more people (large numbers of women) by doing this than the number of people who were offended originally by not obsessing so much about Diversity. People, regardless of gender or identity, enjoy a compelling story and characters and as long as developers are given the freedom to create them, then they will be created and the general public will endorse the best creations of the current time with their wallets. People are fed up of pandering to the diversity cause and all people want is captivating original content being made.
The problem with that mindset is that at the end of the day, it's the product that matters and the product that should come first. Diversity is *NOT* a necessity for a good product. Lisa the Painful for example has one female character total, as it's a major plot point for the story. That doesn't stop the game from being an absolute banger. The game had great gameplay, great humor, and really unique and funky music that was surprisingly catchy. Of course money and results will catch up to that. It's like if one company is selling a toilet plunger that works and gets the job done easily, and another country sells one that's cheap quality, breaks frequently, but they plastered the LGBT flag all over it and proudly claim they donate 5 cents to Palestine after every purchase: dude I don't care if your TOILET PLUNGER is pro-LGBT, I just need to unclog my ****ing toilet! The product and service comes first. *Always.* Those that fail to recognize this will die out on the free market. Yes, it's taken remarkably long for this to finally happen (feels like DEI and "woke" measures showed their face in 2012), but this year has been an absolute bloodbath for such media. Even Disney seems like it's starting to recognize the problem it's insisted on for years now.
@@Longknife The funny part is that companies never truly believed in DEI for its own sake. They were merely tricked into thinking that featuring more diversity would translate to increased market share, and all they really care about is increasing profits year over year.
I just retired, I'm 62, I dug my (adult now) kids old PS3 out of the basement, and played Infamous for the first time, AND HAD A BLAST !!! I've been buying old PS3 games on eBay since, lol.
I always thought the PS3 was cool, even though I only had a PS2 back in the early 2000s. I was finally able to get Resistance Fall of Man playable at 60 fps on my Steam Deck. It's freaking unreal. 🙂
I feel the exact same way. I really resonate with this video; been trying to tell people the same thing IRL but it never came out as elegantly... I just have them play mirror's edge and BG&E and compare to modern stuff.
Just immediate subscription from me! A person who speaks common sense. It's a big pleasure to listen to. Will take a look at your other videos. Old games is my theme too!
Older games just had more passion behind them. Rare few companies still focus on making great games like FromSoftware but so few exist. But sales don't lie. Wukong and Elden Ring proved that.
As corny as this sounds, older games truly had soul, not all of them but the majority of them. Of course cash grabs happened then as they do now but direction, art, sound and story had so much passion poured into them, I feel as though games are now made by committee, check all the right boxes and if you don't like it you're misogynist/racist etc or games are half baked and full of micro transactions but the library of old games is still so long, and our PC can actually run them Glad to see a new video on such a unexpected topic Angelica, do you think you'll ever touch on the fallout series? If anything, for its odd fashion
nah, its pure nostalgia. We always remember the memorable stuff and glamourise the past. Doesnt matter if its games, cinema, literature etc. If you think back to the 80s music for example you may think of some of the greatest hits or iconic songs - not of the mountain of forgettable slop that was also produced at the time. same with games. Give it a couple years and we will already look back foundly on some of the recent releases ^^ Monetization is getting definitely worse im with you on that but its also been a gradual development since the early 2000's. gaming aint that old anyway compared to other media
@@allanredhill8682I think earlier games were more creative, maybe it’s because they had to do more with less (like when you only got 64KB memory and a floppy disk)
@@jadziyadax1073 I think its mainly because the medium was fairly new. We currently reached a point where most gameplay systems used are fairly derivative. Thats not a knock on modern developers, its just that we developed a kind of language for the medium that is tried and true. Unless there will be radical shifts in technology I dont think we will see too much innovation. also dont underestimate nostalgia. There are a lot of old games that simply dont hold up anymore. And many things we thought were novel back on release might seem pretty crude or plain by todays gaming standarts. But thats just my take on it
That's a reason I like old janky games where some of the game/level design decision made no sense and were quirky, but that was the real magic behind it. It was some dudes coming together and making videogames with a passion. Nowadays a lot of games are so hand holding and stripped away from their good classic elements as there are corporations who want to take the safe road, extremely sanitize the gameplay to avoid confusing the average player, it's a soulless production machine. Only indie games sometimes capture that old feeling of people coming together in small teams or as lone developers to work on their own passion.
That's true but I feel like alot of gamers, including Angelica are living in a little bubble sometimes, happens to myself as well. Because there's so many damn good modern video games across the past 5 years. Even if you're only a RPG fan. Disco Elysium and BG3 are two of the best roleplaying games I've played in decades, Disco Elysium being a personal favourite. Other games from across genre's being Outer Wilds, Stray, Road 96, DOOM Eternal, Half-Life: Alyx, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ghost of Tsushima, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Crusader Kings 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Hades, Elden Ring, Marvel Rivals, Aliens: Dark Descent, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Alan Wake 2, Hi-FI Rush, Planet of Lana, and Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon to name a few. VR titles alone are really impressive, starting to feel like we are in the golden age of VR gaming. I've been playing alot of amazing Indie games, not only cheaper (student life) but they seem to be far more creative compared to alot of AAA games. I find more trouble trying to decide on a game than trying to find one I enjoy. There's so many all ranging in quality.
In my opinion, we’re living in the low bar era of gaming but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few diamonds out there anymore. I hope the industry improves and gets better but I’m not holding my breath. I wouldn’t go out of my way to JUST play older games but a balanced approach seems to be the best way for me at least.
I agree, I find a lot of good games still. I can go through my steam library if you want examples. Indie devs are still doing great work, though many miss the mark, but that's just how game development is, it's really fking hard and only the best of the best will make it big.
Yeah, for example most capcom modern RESIDENT EVIL games, characters are beautiful and gameplay is excellent. Some censorship had been put on it, unfortunately but I guess they want to sell their games, still great.
Love your videos. Have you ever considered playing Kingdom Come Deliverance? It's a very immersive game that has some very cozy atmospheres as well as giving you a lot of freedom. One of the best thing morrowind offers is having a personality as dump stat and just have everyone hating on you just for them to slowly turn around as you level up, raise your renown and fame, rise through guild ranks slowly making a name for yourself in the world. And then all of a sudden you realize how much nicer (almost) everyone is towards you. Also factions friction and disposition lowering when you join one or the other. And you can wear different gloves on each hand and robes over armor and pants underneath it? What a mindblowing concept! Also having original theme with tight vision, not just some UE5 free shop accessories just slapped together to create "a game". In short, my faith in BGS died long ago, their trend of what they gonna do with next game(s) is clear and they just gonna shit on their golden goose formula even more, possibly even outright killing it instead of building upon it/polishing it. Anyway, it won't matter coz people gonna buy it just like they did Midfield and think it's great stuff. I’m sick of realism and story focused games tbh what happened to art design and focusing on making the game fun first and foremost and definitely agree with everything you’ve said in the video especially about the female characters acting more masculine an example that hurts me in particular as a resident evil fan is Claire redfield and Jill valentine who were so sweet and caring yet powerful and really likeable in the og games now Jill has much sharper features and is angry all the time she feels like a completely different character Claire while not as extreme still swears alot and is overly confident in certain situations
There is a reason for this, back then, games were made by actual gamers and nerds. Now, they are made by businessmen in suits who couldn't care less about video games and just want a profit.
Correct. Same with the Internet of today. Its so boring, white backgrounds, and stale. Every website looks the same. I so very much miss the old internet. Same with games. I miss when gaming was something that wasn't cool. If you played games you were a "loser" nerd lol. I wish I could just live the early 2000s again even just for a week.
Recently, a friend invited me to play retail WoW. He tried to persuade me by saying "Come on, it's not hard to level up." I realized that is my fundamental disconnect with modern games. I WANT the journey. I WANT challenge. I WANT my progress to mean something in the game. I WANT to earn that sword that makes me look badass. Now, the game is all wow tokens, level boosts, store cosmetics, and getting on an endgame hamster wheel where your progress is reset every few months. Anyway, thanks for voicing my grievances.
bg3 is one of the only games in like.. over a decade that i can think of that's captured the feeling of comfort and at-homeness the way older games did, while still making realistic and likeable characters. it's a modern game that doesn't feel modern, and it's wonderful how well it worked
@@ZodaSoda see on one hand i get what you're saying, on the other hand i'm still asking Halsin to wild shape in that one scene with no regard for modern concepts
I'm 18 and I'm enjoying old games more than the newer one, not out of nostalgia. Some actually really age very well like Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex, Planescape Torment, and more.
If you liked Planescape Torment, you should try Disco Elysium! It`s a dialogue-based role-playing game with insprirations from Planescape torment, crime series and detective novels.
I impulsively bought myself a 4080 Super thinking it'd re-ignite my enthusiasm and get me out of my rut. The first thing I played on it after a lot of deliberation was KOTOR (that being my 3rd playthrough). :/ So many modern games just bore me very quickly now. Cyberpunk, Days Gone and HZD were very good but I'm being drawn back to the golden oldies again. I'm considering an overhauled Morrowind playthrough at the moment with all the pretty mods. I hate how everything isn't just uglified now, it's also massively dumbed down. I like having stats and stuff to fiddle with!
Lack of media literacy is definitely at the core of a lot of this. Hit the nail on the head there. Just wanted to appreciate you being able to articulate that nuance in a way I don't know if I could have.
Nice video. I really find myself gravitating back to older games. I feel like something was lost from those times. Depth and immersion are two things that I really enjoy and modern games are losing those things. Thankfully, indie developers feel the same as we do and are helping recreate those amazing experiences. Remember the Thief games? Those were some of the most atmospheric and immersive games ever made, with unparalleled level and sound design. It had so much character and the environments and world itself told a story. You knew you were in this dark steampunk world and you didn't have to have hours of exposition vomited at you when you start the game. I will always appreciate someone that enjoys the classics!
Yes, Thief the Dark Project! Imagine a world where they made that with modern day technology. I'd be drooling. Instead we get cash grab microtransaction "games" :(
10:27 Exactly! It's so ridiculous that people don't understand that depiction does not equal endorsement. It's like when Doom was released and some christians were crying about demon worship and the dev was like "bro the entire game is about KILLING DEMONS". So stupid.
Yeah 100% agree with you, I like older games too, Oblivion is one of my favourites, VTM Bloodlines 1 also, games like that. Modern games are suffering from issues these days, there are a lot of real world issues being brought into games, it is a little tiring tbh. Everywhere you look "the narrative" is being pushed. I don't know about you but I play games to escape reality for a little while and immerse myself in a world of fantasy, not to be reminded of issues going on in the world. Older games didn't suffer from this, there was a freedom in the creative process that just isn't allowed in a lot of cases. Thanks for the video, it was a breath of fresh air. :)
I never played skyrim becuase oblivion sucked,. but isnt it the land of the nords? If anything everyone else is the colonizer. Morrowind was about colonization and an evil god and a plague, i dont know what skyrim is about but just like the creator of fallout had to come out and says its about human tribalism and not about critiquing capitalism even though its clear as day thats what about as in the intro it says "war never changes" but i guess modern audiences are so stupid they have to say "capitalism" 30 times for the "modern audience" to get it like the saints row reboot or how skulls and bones also blamed capitalism when its a pirate game so capitalism did not exist yet and then you have the dead space remake changing a graffiti from "f this ship" to "f this is its a capitalist corporation". Seems to me the "modern audience" which judging by sales does not exist, needs everything spelled out to them. Most of the people whining about "colonization" or any other nonsense are just repeating what they heard on tik tok and have no idea wtf they talking about. Which means if the culture changes to nazism, they be repeating nazi propaganda.
Warframe, Path of Exile, very controversial but I will also count in Star Citizen. Even though ships cost hundreds, all you need is the 45 USD starter pack & you can pretty much buy most ships with in-game currency. Even if the game is buggy, theres quite a bit of fun to be had, and stability wise........well........it's a hit or miss, depends from patch to patch.
It isn’t helped by the absurd videos that “anti-woke” gamers spam on TH-cam, with silly sensationalist thumbnails about studios going woke. It’s nice seeing someone just sit down and talk about it like a normal human being.
Well said. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you give Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines a go. Spooky season is almost upon us, a perfect timing for that gem.
I only play video games a few times a year, and for the last handful of years it has been exclusively games that were 10-25 years old. I've gotten to a point where I just know what I like to settle down with. These games will never get old to me and have much more heart than almost anything that I've seen today. They're also just cozy for me.
3:25 Suddenly changing to the scary cave music is just such a chef's kiss moment... Thank you for the video, always great to see your thoughts on stuff like this
I seriously couldn't agree with you more. As time goes on, I find myself installing and playing games like Day of the Tentacle, Curse of Monkey Island, Freelancer, Outlaws, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, the original Call of Duty, Red Alert 2, Half-life and Half-life 2, Diablo II, and of course, Morrowind and Oblivion. The list goes on. What brings me back to those games is how much I find myself immersed and invested. Even real old games like Day of the Tentacle is still just hilarious and fun. The point of gaming is to lose one's self in an entirely different world, and give us that brief moment to leave our stress behind. Now all that stress is just built into the games. Ugh no thanks.
Excellent point about Abby body in a post apocalyptic society. I have read thousands of apocalyptic theme series. At six months after the event usually. Everyone is starving. There are not built people surviving. Most are skin and bones. A lot starve to death.
More people need to be brave enough to express their (absolutely valid) opinions, as you have done here. I applaud you Angelikatosh, and you have my subscription.
Fully agree! Been gaming since I was a kid in the mid-late 90s and I find the games from that era and until about 2008, or so, to be the golden age of gaming. Edit: That WoW Tavern music at 9:42 washed me with nostalgia!
For me it comes down to immersion and escapism, and most newer games just aren't immersive. From yellow paint and uncanny valley faces, to trading IRL money for stuff in MMOs, to forced current-day identity politics and the erasure of both strong men and attractive women, I just can't suspend my disbelief.
PAM TAT TS.. .YOU LEVELD UP, TONS OF POPS IN THE SCREEN, quest markers everywhere, constantly being reminded that you have points to spent, npcs that are goofy and make jokes and break the fourth wall constantly, if you who made the game dont take the setting seriously, why should i? Yellow paint, buy the new skin pack now, premium currencies like its a free to play game and of course blm posters and rainbow flags. Pacific drive takes place in the 90s and you drive a station wagon, it has podcasts which did not exist in the 90s and it has stickers that you can put in your car, but i am not making this up, the vast majority of which are pride flags and blm stickers, then they released a space themed stickers dlc and its expensive. People who will defend this will argue that its escapism for them, to which i ask escape what exactly? Everything in modern games is exactly like real life but even more gay and cringe. Star wars came out right after the cold war and at the height of race riots, it was about a galaxy far far away, it didnt constantly remind you current day issues and insulted you for not agreeing with middle upper class liberal politics. I dont watch movies or play games to be lectured but to have fun...and i am not having fun with modern games.
I can barely stand to get past the tutorial in half of these new games. It's like 4 hours and explains everything from clicking the mouse to wiping ur a**. like just let me play, if I wanted to read a thousand words I would've bought a book instead.
Great take. I agree with many things you've stated. I believe most of us just want to enjoy games without the outside noise of the world always trying to enter everything in life we do. Sometimes we just want to escape in a realm that usually never represents us. Many times thats the point. Nothing wrong with loving yourself but not everything needs to be a direct reflection of you as a person.
hi Angelikatosh here from asmons video, just wanted to hop over and say this is an amazingly well thought out video and great job. look forward to watching some more from you.
I too have grasped the safety of older titles in gaming. I tried my hand at modern gaming, and all I witnessed were ways I could spend more money for almost nothing. I felt as if I was not stepping into another adventure...That adventure was stepping into my wallet. It was a sad reality to process which made me step back all together in my way of life. Yes, I took it that far. I began despising modern advances. I purchased a CRTV and a DVD player, I cancelled my expensive internet and stuck with a 10 dollar a month plan, and I even purchased an old Dell laptop for 50 dollars to play titles from my childhood. It's been so long since I actually was allowed to simply enjoy a game. Now, I enjoy titles such as Baldurs gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Oblivion, Dark Stone, Diablo 1 and 2, Warcraft 3, Age of Empires, Arcanum...I can go on and on. To sum it up, these titles allowed my love for simple gaming to be restored instead of abandoning gaming all together due to boredom or expense. I get tempted once in a while of titles like Baldurs Gate 3, but I keep myself mentally in check that I may be let down again. True gaming is not what it was anymore, but thanks to sites like GoG or for console players any local Disk Replay or vintage gaming store, we can go back...and go back with a smile.
I agree with a lot of sentiments here, but I would not shut of modern gaming completely. Rare games like Baldur's Gate 3 are still seemingly untouched by the crap that plagues most modern releases, and the studios developing them can only continue to do so if people support their games and ideals and vote with their wallets.
@@Zero-Sun I have heard a lot of great things about Baldurs Gate 3, and perhaps someday i'll give it a try. I think the new image of modern gaming has cast a shadow over games like BG3 to where the unfortunate expectations cast away many from giving it a chance. Sadly, thats where I currently stand. However, I'm sure there will come a day where I I finish the older games on my listing and decide to say heck it, and give it a try.
you know things are bad when Oblivion NPC's are prettier than some of these new game characters
Edit: welcome to the channel for those of you who saw the asmongold stream, and thank you for sharing your thoughts here with me as well ❤
1:21 case and point
It's a great time to return to the PS2 era
Same with Fallout 3/NV and Fallout 4. Some of the Fallout 4 NPCs look downright DUMPY.
@@Angelikatosh how dare you?! Oblivion NPCs are beautiful
I'm so glad more people are realizing that older games are good and that its not because of nostalgia. Older games were made to be entertainment and actual GAMES

And some.of them not just games.
Not just games. Films, music, series, comics, action figures, absolutely EVERYTHING was better before
Corporations ruin everything they touch.

2005 - 2015 a lot of great games.

Also they have like 2,000 mods.
Unless they're Hogs of war. In which case, forget it.

I seem to be alot less nostalgic in general than most people.):
1) They're actually complete, polished and have their bugs fixed.

The sound of the wc3 menu chains dropping down is literally my favorite noise in history.
I started playing wc3 when I was 5, and it truly is the greatest of all time
Both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne's menus are amazing. I find them relaxing to listen to
Indeed!
I've added a bunch of WC3-sounds to the library of my D&D VTT. When someone gets Enlarged, they yell "for Khaz Modan!", or when a Barbarian rage they go all orc bloodlust "arhYarRAlyrglarg!"
My players love it.
Wc3 is one of the greatest games, campaign, characters, the graphics is just magical and dota 2 or even league of legends exist because of it.
its the Starcraft(broodwar) scene/UI sliding and countdown that does it for me. Broodwar is the GOAT (S. Korea has immortalized it)
I also like the sound of chains ..just, you know, it doesnt need to be w3
If you're not enjoying modern gaming, here's a list of retro video games that I think everyone should play through at least once (I consider any game before the HD era in the 7th generation as retro):
1. Resident Evil 4 (2005)
2. Super Metroid
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Ninja Gaiden Black
5. Metal Gear Solid 1-3
6. Chrono Trigger
7. Metroid Prime
8. Devil May Cry 1&3
9. A Link to the Past
10. Ocarina of Time
11. Rondo of Blood.
12. Resident Evil 1 (1996) & Remake (2002)
13. Half Life 2
14. Deus Ex
15. Doom (1993)
16. Final Fantasy VI & VII (1997) & X
17. Resident Evil 2 (1998)
18. Silent Hill 2 (2001)
19. GTA Vice City & San Andreas
20. Super Mario World
21. Super Mario 64
22. Donkey Kong Country 2
23. Yoshi's Island
There are amazing games from the 7th generation as well (it's one of my favorite gens) but I don't really consider them retro.

@@nicholasrova3698 less than 1% of indie games are actually good, but AA are consistent. Elden Ring was fantastic for example.
Wait that’s true! It really breaks imemrsion to hve bland modern UI
Even Diablo 4's UI sucks ass, it doesn't even LOOK like Diablo anymore. 3 Also doesn't, it really just kind of looks like a Diablo 2 mod made by completely different people (I mean, it was, but still).
It's because modern UIs are about forcing you to view what they want to sell you, not what you want to interact with.
Ah, you reminded me, i need to finish my wonder in Age of Empires 1 ❤
Oh man, you’re speaking my language! Thinking back on old games from id, Westwood, and Blizzard, every single menu item, scroll bar, and button was crafted with a passion and talent that is nearly unheard of today. Starfield, I think, is the worst example of low-effort UI that I’ve ever seen. Todd Howard took one look at the Windows Modern Settings App, and told his artists to make his game look like that. Utterly devoid of all soul and creativity.
Damn angelika did not hold back in this video. Must be the post apocalyptic steroids kicking in ✊😔

Cyberpunk is an amazing game. Especially on pc when you can put flying mods In. There isn’t a game out right now with a story as good.
1+ from a guy that's still playing Cyberpunk 2077 over new games.
I’ve only played Cyberpunk 2077 one time, right at launch week, and it was an amazing experience. Maybe not the greatest game ever made, but great game anyway. I only encountered one almost game breaking bug too. I’ll probably play it again soon.
It is weird to me that Cyberpunk 2077 is considered old, wtf 😂😂
There’s just something so comforting about the atmosphere of older games that newer ones can’t quite replicate

Its honestly shameful how they can take that early access money and then just not deliver because the game is unplayable
@@Zhakaron I don't know if we'll be around to witness it, but I like to believe that the current industry will learn from the mistakes made so far.
Bloodborne, rdr2, dark souls 3, gow (2018) and ragnarok, mafia DE, sekiro, nioh 1&2?
Yes inclusion actually ruins diversity in the long run. Look at china.
You're dangerously close to finding out the purpose of telling stories.
Thank you for sharing!
yeah so many people in the industry leak stuff and say its worse than we thought, especially in ubisoft but eventually they get fired because the games dont sell.
Wow I relate to this content.
I just retired, I'm 62, I dug my (adult now) kids old PS3 out of the basement, and played Infamous for the first time, AND HAD A BLAST !!! I've been buying old PS3 games on eBay since, lol.
I honestly think that the PS3/xbox360 era is when AAA games peaked.
I always thought the PS3 was cool, even though I only had a PS2 back in the early 2000s. I was finally able to get Resistance Fall of Man playable at 60 fps on my Steam Deck. It's freaking unreal. 🙂
How have you not gotten on my feed before? Instant sub. Great vid
Your reaction was also my reaction! High five! As I feel the same way.
Older games just had more passion behind them. Rare few companies still focus on making great games like FromSoftware but so few exist. But sales don't lie. Wukong and Elden Ring proved that.
Back when games were still growing, before it was an overcommercialized mess.
As corny as this sounds, older games truly had soul, not all of them but the majority of them. Of course cash grabs happened then as they do now but direction, art, sound and story had so much passion poured into them, I feel as though games are now made by committee, check all the right boxes and if you don't like it you're misogynist/racist etc or games are half baked and full of micro transactions but the library of old games is still so long, and our PC can actually run them
Glad to see a new video on such a unexpected topic Angelica, do you think you'll ever touch on the fallout series?
I totally agree, i love your way of thinking
In my opinion, we’re living in the low bar era of gaming but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few diamonds out there anymore. I hope the industry improves and gets better but I’m not holding my breath. I wouldn’t go out of my way to JUST play older games but a balanced approach seems to be the best way for me at least.
I agree, I find a lot of good games still. I can go through my steam library if you want examples. Indie devs are still doing great work, though many miss the mark, but that's just how game development is, it's really fking hard and only the best of the best will make it big.
I am sure the new stalker game wont be woke
yeah plenty of indie games that are good, they got issues but "we are an indie studio please understand"
Yeah, for example most capcom modern RESIDENT EVIL games, characters are beautiful and gameplay is excellent. Some censorship had been put on it, unfortunately but I guess they want to sell their games, still great.
Yeah! That's my take on it as well. It's not the best time for new games, but that doesn't mean that there's literally zero new games that are good.
Both of the people who liked Concord will be really angry about this.
What I realized about older games is it's not nostalgia. Sure you can feel nostalgia, but I find myself enjoying older games in general that I haven't played growing up too. Neither is it simply nostalgia for another time in our life. It's because that era is a part of us. And always will be.

So many modern games just bore me very quickly now. Cyberpunk, Days Gone and HZD were very good but I'm being drawn back to the golden oldies again. I'm considering an overhauled Morrowind playthrough at the moment with all the pretty mods. I hate how everything isn't just uglified now, it's also massively dumbed down.

It's so cool seeing someone that reminds of my friends group back in the day, playing the games we played. Great channel!
Jesus christ, Skyrim a pro-colonization narrative? That is someone who must have failed every reading comprehension test they ever took.

The point of gaming is to lose one's self in an entirely different world, and give us that brief moment to leave our stress behind. Now all that stress is just built into the games. Ugh no thanks.
Day of the Tentacle is still my favourite adventure game of all time. Just as good today as it was 30 years ago.

Edit: That WoW Tavern music at 9:42 washed me with nostalgia!
Lovely take. I enjoyed it.
Almost everything you said is quite bullshit
They politicize our games, which are meant to be escapism from our already far too politicized lives.
@@arkgaharandan5881 Very well said.
I like retro games too.
Mods for old games are our only hope, if you want something done right ya gotta do it yourself!
You've earned yourself a new subscriber, really appreciate your take on this new weird era of gaming, keep it up!!
hi Angelikatosh here from asmons video, just wanted to hop over and say this is an amazingly well thought out video and great job. look forward to watching some more from you.
Amen to that. Couldn't have said it better myself
All I have to say is: thank you for this video? I agree with you in 100%!!!!! Thank you so much to have the courage to make this video.
Gotta love it when people gaslight you into making you think having your opinion is a bad thing and that you should feel bad for it.
Thx for all the fax spoken in this video 😤🙏 Talos bless you
You echo so many of my thoughts. Liked and subbed
This girl is spot on!
