What a fantastic video. It’s cool to see someone use a product seriously then come back a year later and provide a truly thorough rundown of the good and the bad. Thank you.
Thanks for the one year review! I was really hesitant to stand my hobie but now I do it without even thinking. Looks like you can’t beat that pelican for the price!
I have found that when standing up, if I am fast I am more stable from the start. Just do it like you are saying. Now sitting, I tend to go a little easier. I have come close to flipping over the side a couple of times by miscalculating the kayak's movement 🤣
Are you saying you don't win them all? The guys I see finish at the top of the events are almost next level. Is there a place where participants with channels can be found?
Man a year went by that fast. Man I'm happy to hear that you are in love with your kayak. I am looking to upgrade to a pedal drive kayak. Weight capacity & how wide are the pedals is one of my main concern. With me being a 300-pound dude I like the fact that it can hold me. I am down to 273 Ibs right now but I think that's going to be shortly before I'll be right back to 300 lbs. Every kayaks going to have the issues regardless of what kayak that you have. I would definitely buy this kayak for sure. I love the funniness in the video man. I think I might have gotten you a new subscriber. My wife's co-workers husband was just watching this with me & he like the video. I told him to check out your channel you are very funny & and a really cool person. Good video buddy thank you for sharing.
It really did, and I have had this video since Jan 🤣 Congrats man. I am doing great over hear as well. Since Jan I have got down to 241, as of this week. Another 25 and the target weight is achieved.
@@TravisDoesKayakFishing Thank you buddy appreciate that. And congratulations to you 👏 man. That is awesome news to hear. We are working on this together man. That's where my Doctor would like to see me at is between 200 & 225 Ibs. I don't know if you got the message of me responding about my shoes. But I really do appreciate you asking.
Nothing wrong with the Pelican. It holds up, the support is good, and it's great for some serious recreational fishing. I just wish they would drop the price back down. 1500 is pushing the price you can get some mid-range kayaks from Grady's. My Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL was 2100 ya know. I am not trying to discourage you, it's just that everything cost so dang much right now ya know.
Nice review Travis! Still looking to get something like this for the kid so he doesn’t feel left out not having a pedal drive when we take the Old Towns out.
Was debating if I needed to upgrade my Pelican. Ur review was so thorough that I'm good for a few more seasons. Thanks for the killer review nice to know there are Hobie alternatives.
You rocking this same model? If so, what are you considering the upgrade? I was thinking maybe a kayak from Lightning, but I am digging the Lynx style. Going to use this one until at least next year, maybe two.
awesome review! and looks like an awesome kayak! don't have one with pedals yet but I will certainly be looking to get one in the future and this one is now on top of my list!
The time of year is right my friend. Keep an eye out for kayak demo events. I see them popping up in Upstate South Carolina already. If you go with this model, let me know if you have any questions. I would be more than happy to give my thoughts.
Great review. Kayaks are getting very pricey these days . My buddy has the same boat and he had a tone of issues with the drive. He found a great deal on a mirage drive 180 and has not had any problems.
I have heard of a few having a tough go. Other than me being hard on the drives, they have been reliable. I also know of vidoes where people do what your friend did. They love it and gain reverse. I might try to trade my fish finder for one. Gaining the reverse would be awesome.
How is it turning on yours had mine put away for about a year took it out on the water yesterday and the turning was terrible I checked cables they were good but steering was not working it could completely turn me in a circle I was like what the heck is going on . My wife vibe sea ghost 110 turns a lot better
Yeah, I used it for a couple of years and never had that issue. Was it a matter of it just changing directions when it wasn't supposed to or poor turning in general? Sounds like the rudder is not going down all the way or staying. I know a guy who installed a rudder extension, homemade, and it boosed his turning from bad to amazing, on his Pelican.
Good video. I think you're about my size (6'0''/ 270) I am scared shitless to stand up in my catch 100...so because of that I don't put any storage in the back cuz I don't think I could really get back there. Am I overreacting? haha. Also, is it quite the leg work out or what are your thoughts on that given our size?
I waw 277 when I started and 205 now. The pelican catch series will never be the most stable. Standing always felt wobbly compared to my Old Town. I sold the catch when I was at 230 pounds but had no mobility issues. The drive was plenty fast and I never felt like I was sinking. The workout isn't bad and you can adjust the tension cables. It's like a 10 speed. You can be loose with the pedals and a little slower for longer or power pedaling for speed in short burts. Somewhere in the middle was the sweet spot for me.
First rule of kayak fishing club is never talk about where you get your crate!!🤣😂🤣😂Great review Travis 👍 I still love your rig and if I wasn't such a cheapskate I would buy one solely from your review honesty is rarely used these days in lieu of getting something free!🤜🤛 tight lines my brother 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
The second rule is.. I know, I know lol. I couldn't find one in the stores when I was looking. In the end, they won. I tore my jacket retrieving it. I really do like this one. It just doesn't let me down. I think in the next year or two I will get something a little heavier, but this one is holding up super well.
Dude I'm loving this kayak... I had a Oldtown Sportsman PDL 120 a couple years ago.. had to sell during the pandemic unfortunately.. wanted to get back on the water... Found an old man selling one on Facebook marketplace... He used it a couple times.. basically brand new.. he let me have it for 550... Killer deal... Not as good as the Old town.. but I'm not complaining one bit it's a sweet yak!!
I actually went the other way. I went with the Old Town PDL 106 after the Pelican and can still say, I don't regret getting the Pelican at all. The Old Town is different animal, but in the price range and the features included make it unbeatable IMO. What you paid is what non-pedal drive models go for used. Super nice pickup!
@@TravisDoesKayakFishing awesome brother!! The Old town is a Cadillac!! Super nice... But yeah for 550.. I'm gunna use it until it breaks down on me then I'll probably get another old town or hobie.. enjoy brother!!
Good video...Enjoyed the review. I just bought a used Pelican Catch 130 with it's original HD drive. It shows very little use, but I'm sure the drive will let go at some times. The little black plastic pieces are still there. Any suggestions what to do when it does let go would be appreciated. I'm open to any suggestions. I did subscribe & like your video. Thanks!!!
I would try to register the kayak at the pelican website. If you can get it warranted, some people don't register so I would try, or ask that they give you the info you need to get support. Pelican support is amazing and will send you replacement parts with just a couple of questions ( I think it's a 5 year warranty on the drive and lifetime on the hull). Those pegs, really do nothing in the end. They are meant for a guide the drive into the port. The only issues that really took my drive down was the cable broke. Those are less than 50 to replace. The good news about this drive, is it's simple. Pedals - A nut to hold them on Fins - Really just the rods that go into them. Those can be broken. Contact Pelican and they can quote them, part is like 12 dollars if I remember and you get two. Tension cables and nuts - You can get a couple of spare nuts from any hardware store. You might want to keep at least one spare cable. This is where I had failure once. If you get 5 miles from the ramp and the drive breaks, it's a long paddle back in this kayak. Chain - Grease twice per year, I do it in Jan and again in July, this just keeps it smooth Rudder Cables - replace every other years IMO, you will notice they get loose and frail. If these go down on the water, you an still pedal and use the paddle to steer The chain, nuts, and fin rods, I would get them ordered and keep them with me, unless you are just recreational cruising, then you likely won't go more than 1 or 2 miles from the ramp.
I ended up selling when I changed my water behaviors. I went with an Old Town that cost a little bit more, but the reverse, stability, and ease on endurance was a must for me. I think if I had my Pelican still, I wouldn't be competing big tournaments.
I was 275 when I had this kayak. You can absolutely use it. Your weight will not be a problem at all. Standing is just tough on this kayak but to sit and fish, you are good in it.
Yeah man. Sounds like the tension cables are uneven. If they were installed at the store, this likey is it. I would do this... Check the tension cables on the rudder. Loosen both, put the knob straight and pull them evenly. If you can get someone to keep the rudder handle straight it would help. You can also adjust the cables under the rudder knob but it's tough to get to get it even from that way. It's really that simple. It's a two cable tension system that just needs adjusting. This video might help getting the rudder balanced correctly. It says install but explains how it all works. About 2 minutes in you can see the way to adjust the cables at the install. th-cam.com/video/OaycaZ2KeS4/w-d-xo.html

I got the same kayak. My fat ass is at 330. And there’s probably a inch of water that pulls on the bottom. Does that happen with you on your way? I think I might just be too heavy for it.

Thanks. I really like this kayak. Seems like so long ago.
Pelican did step up with those kayaks. Very nice yak
Fully agree. I have yet to really be disagreeable with anything about it. Hard to believe this a budget model in the pedal kayak world.

I have my transducer mounted thru the underseat sculper hole. High quality waterproof tape and tight cable draw holds perfectly.
I see a lot of people like that and they seem to like it too.
Excellent review exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
It's a great recreational fishing kayak. I loved it.
One thing I can say about QCKBF, You’d be in good company finishing last.

IMO, you need anything to get back on the water at this point. Time to get back to tank hunting.

Hello 👋
When you upgrade to the 130 I'll take your 100😁.

You are the first person to call it out. I painted that years ago.
Are the others yours as well? If so I like your work! Oh, and back to the point, great review! I’ll probably get the non-pedal version.
