Here is an easy fix for Ford, have a "low oil warning" notification well before it becomes catastrophic for the owner. Problem solved, a win for both Ford and the customer.
The low level indicator is known as the dipstick. It is manual and involves opening the hood and pulling out the dipstick ... Wiping off the oil and reinserting. Pull it out again and read the level and ta da you know the oil level in your engine. I understand the five minutes it takes to do this but how much does a new engine cost?
Great video, Ford covered it in the literature. I think it's all about oil vapors, that's why the type of driving effects it. This is why extremely high performance engines run dry sump systems with multiple pick ups and a huge reservoir. This is simply what happens when you make race cars available to the public. Yes oil level is critical, don't learn the hard way.
I have a 2019 Nissan 370Z sport coupe 6M with about 14K miles on it. During the first 1500 miles I kept the revs below 3500, accelerated gently and varied engine speed as I drove. I also did an early oil change at 500 miles and another early oil change at about 1500 miles before going to a normal 3K mile oil change interval. The result: the engine runs like a finely made swiss watch with virtually no noise and is currently using oil at the rate of about 1 quart per 10K miles. I also sweep the bottom of the oil pan with a telescoping magnet when I do oil changes to try to remove as much of the iron and steel wear particles that have accumulated there.
Ford recommends first 100 miles to keep revs below 4500rpm. 1500 miles is unnecessary. These are modern engines. They’re built to run perfectly from the showroom floor
The 12-13 Boss 302 has an amazing engine and sound too! Love the Gt 350 but also love my Boss. As a result I loose some oil as well and have to replace about 1/2 quart roughly ever 2 to 3 months and it’s daily driven. Don’t forget the Boss was built to be a track driven car also, and did pretty well even though it had a live rear axle setup. Great review
I owned a 12 Boss 302. Got it with very low miles. Drove it sparingly and tracked it a couple of times. Started to consume oil heavily (before tracking). Ford replaced the long block under warranty. Stood by the product. LOVED the car!!

They don’t consume the oil because it’s a flat plane crank! If your going to make a video about a specific issue then you should actually have some of the facts. Richard Mountford Correct. But there have been many reported issues from owners that their cars have used 2 -3 quarts of oil per 500 miles. Aaron Clark, absolutely correct. The design of the crank has nothing to do with oil consumption it has everything to do with the rings. So many people have no idea what they are talking about.
Running a better oil will solve the consumption issue. If you track the car. Use either pennzoil platinum full synthetic or royal purple full synthetic oil both oils don’t burn off as quickly as other brands and the both have the best wear protection on the market. And also installing a catch can would also help with the oil issue.
Check your oil. You would not believe how many people never check the oil. I'm talking about sports cars it's crazy. Something I knew to check at 6yr old on my go kart
interesting... but false info. I checked my oil at every fillup, and it started not using oil, but by 5500 miles it started using up to 1 quart every 120 miles. Ford replaced the motor in February 2019 the cause was "excessive oil consumption" currently the new motor is not using oil. the issues seemed to show up worse in the MY 2017 cars more that others. the bore scope pictures on my 2017 GT350 showed cylinder wall damage in #1, #2 and #3, #2 showed Ring failure and glazed cylinder walls. To correct the guys Video, it comes down to break in procedure.. read the manual on break in and follow it. for the first few hundred miles, do not let it idle for extended periods, do not use cruise control, vary the RPMS, don't baby it but don't hit redline until a few hundred miles.
I believe the harmonics of the engine strain the internal components more overtime than an equivalently sized crossplane engine (like the 5.0 or 5.2 supercharged). Ford had to change the oil filter design from a spin on, to a cartridge design, because the engine shook the spin on design loose. I wouldn't be surprised if the new GT500 proved to be more reliable.
Mine was verified to consume 1 quart every 125 miles, by my local dealer. I got a new engine, if the second motor eats oil they will buy it back and I’ll head back to Porsche 911. It started to consume oil at 8k miles. All compression, leak down and dye tests were normal. Ford really ought to address this in a public manner.
That is what is wrong with most people now they never read the owners maual or take care of the cars. Then always wonder why they have issues, take care of it and it would be good to you.
If you listen to ford manual on oil change intervals then you have no common sense. I dont own that cat but a 2014 5.0 and its oil change say evey 10k. Are you crazy. I dont rev and my oil is full synthetic is burnt at 5k. Ford says change the ATF at 100k. Once again their crazy. It looks good on paper for sales but kills the life of the engine. Use common sense and know your car.
@@daniejames2591 I have a GM car and a Subaru. Neither burns more than a half pint between 5000 mile oil changes. With today's technology no car should be burning oil in copious amounts like these Fords.
So loose clearances or not, where does the oil go? It gets burned. Is it possible to to a harder engine break in and seat the piston rings better and lessen this oil consumption? I did this with my camaro and I don’t believe it has any oil consumption issues. I could be wrong though
I hear a lot of them having rod knock I assume bad rod bearings probably due to the high rpm and the crank on a flat plane is not very good for vibration which causes premature failure.
Greg Williams Well you’re going to have high heat and wear when you run it at higher rpm than not. All vehicle’s will do this under the condition he is driving. The oil goes away because of the heat and that turns it into a vapor which goes by the rings or elsewhere in the engine. The heat is the killer of a engine and it doesn’t matter what you want to say about it shouldn’t be using that much oil. JMO
Hey Joe, sorry to hear that man. Any other details u can share? Mine blew on Saturday 11/20/21….. and Im trying to diagnose the issue…. I check my oil often also…. And im only 500 miles from my last oil change. Happened so fast…..

Oil consumption is NOT normal!! The only way its normal is if Ford designed it that way in order for it to hopefully fail!! That way you will spend more money at the dealership. Stupid cost cutting crap!! I hate the automanufacturers when they do stuff like this.
I know this has been said already but crank causing oil loss? Where do you think the oil goes? Loose bearings it'll still just run back into the pan... Large ring gap is most likely the cause, which is odd because hellcats and zl1s use oil but they run larger gapped rings for the boost. More boost/nitrous you run the more ring gap. But the gt350 being n.a. shouldn't be gapped so much. But nice car though and cool to see you actually drive it like it's meant to be
Some drivers just flat out abuse these cars. They over boost the block which overextends the capabilities of the actual platform. Listen, you cant expect a 80K car too preform like a 200k car. You get what you actually pay for.Treat it as such and you will love the results.
The blocks were bad in the 1st gen Ford supposedly fixed it in later models.. sad to spend that much and wait for the $17000 engine. The real reason the filter can come loose is the crossplane crank has internal vibration issues. Ford built a race car for the street but requires alot of maintenence that the average person wont do.
Every powerful engine I've ever had used oil. What will help is a dropped oil pan so your crank is not whipping it up into the bottom of the cylinders and flooding the rings.....I'm saying this unless the Shelby uses a dry sump (which would be a lot better for everything, especially track use) and would better serve the engine at high rpm's. Even then, certain tolerances in this engine will have to be opened up, due to the heat it will experience and the rpm's it operates at.... If it has forged pistons, like the engines I have built, the top end will generally be set up looser due to more expansion of the forged pistons.
It has, like every car, a windage tray. Regardless, the oil level will be the same with a deeper pan because the sump has to be able to draw oil. Thanks for playing, Tom.
Your correct Tom, unless it actually does have a windage tray. I wonder if you can run thicker oil in this motor. I know a guy that runs 15-40 rotella because he was having oil frothing problems. How he figured that out idk.
I love my Chevy Big Block 🇺🇸.... 496cid... 1.7hp per cid... have had it in a 69 Nova & a 69 Chevelle.... I swapped the cam once for a little bigger one when comp cams came out with a new line... it went to 7200-7400rpm regularly and it never uses any oil...
How many miles do you have on your gt350? And how many miles per quart is your car burning oil? Has the burn rate changed at all over the 3 years? I do have a 17 gt350 and I just found out mine is burning oil too.
The owners manual for my BMW E 46 M3 says it's normal because of the engine tolerances for this vehicle to use a quart of oil every 500 miles. Red line was 8200 like you're talking about that's why
Not the end of the world as per American car manufacturer standards a quart every 500 miles. Could be worse if that’s the only issue with the gt 350 then so be it. Definitely the coolest mustang to date.
95% of all mechanical issues are abuse or maintenance related but owners are quick to blame the vehicles and not themselves, not all vehicles are maintained or operated the same so it is up to us to learn and operate them accordingly.
"95% of all mechanical issues are abuse or maintenance related" I guess but isn't the GT350's up-down-up-down crank configuration with heavy counterweights on the crank very unusual for a high-revving V8? Is it definitely not torsional problems (bearings going out of round at high engine load) due to Ford's unusual engine design contributing to the issue?
My daily 600wheel 11 tvs 5.0 burns 2.5 quarts every 1k miles. It spins 7200rpm like a swiss watch. It burns oil more when i drive it hard. Ford used low tension rings for decreased friction and more power. I check oil weekly. Not a big deal. Blows no smoke and runs great at 94k miles. Destroys clutches though cause its set up for drag but driven as a daily driver pump gas machine
Yep. You are one of the smart ones. These Ford guys here think its ok for an engine to consume 🛢 from brand new. Poor suckers they are. Fell right into Ford's trap. Ford is just waiting to make boatloads of off poor victims who don't know any better.
Like your style, Speed. Your commentaries helped convinced me to buy a GT350...I convinced myself to buy an 'R'! 500 miles from new. I don't mind keeping an eye on the oil level. Will be rather pissed if JR551 (build date May 2018) blows up, though I surely don't abuse cars. At least it's under warranty for years. I do NOT, however, believe from any credible source there is a clear root cause analysis for why this happens to various 350/350R....YET.
As a direct comparison, I just recently went on a road trip with my 17 Whipple GT and my friends 17 GT350. We drove 7000km from Alberta, Canada down to San Diego, back up the coast and home. Along the way there was many times on the beautiful Interstates that we did some hard roll racing and pulls. When we made it back home I had used maybe 1/2 a quart of oil. He used 3 in his 350.
What I want to know where did he get his harness from. 2017 uses only 1/4 quart for two track day., but I have change oil and filter after three months or half the driving season.
This is one of the reasons I sold my Shelby GT350. I went on a long tour/rally of Switzerland and Austria in mine (2k miles total). I brought along 5 quarts of oil. I drove the piss out of the car all through the Alps. Mine consumed all 5 quarts 3/4 through the event and I still needed to finish and get home. Luckily some of the guys on the rally gave me a few quarts so I was saved. Still after that I was pissed at the car and sold it. Now I heard Ford will replace the engine if its consuming as much oil as mine was. Thats ok I wouldn't want it without the original engine anyway.
I was a Mustang/'71-'73 Cougar fan for 40+ years. My experience was wrapped around 302 and 351-C engines, inc. both 2 & 4 bbl heads. 50 years of being an enthusiast and a DIY'er tells me that no engine consuming oil at a rate of more than 1 qt every few thousand miles, would be acceptable to me! Period! Ever! Furthermore, I would build for a particular rpm redline and derate that by a thousand rpms as a safety factor. This engine is clearly overrated and the owners can't seem to recognize it. IMO, 450-500 hp in a street car is way more than enough and anymore is insanity. I'm beyond all that stuff these days. My "toy" is my 2013 Challenger R/T Classic w/6 speed. I don't race and my insurance is dirt cheap.
My 98 Ford Escort can go 5000 miles and doesn’t use a drop of oil but it only has like 100 hp. Also I have no idea what the redline is, I don’t even have a tach. It will do over 100 mph though I have confirmed that 😂. Sweet car but that oil consumption would freak me out a bit. Seems like the nature of the beast.
hey im looking into buying a gt350r 2019 what do you think is a good deal example sticker or how much below?, i used to have a gt350 17 i paid invoice for it.
New cars nowadays have far better tolerances than in decades past thus lower oil consumption. I thought the days of new cars consuming oil were gone. Apparently not with this one.
A 10 minute video about the need to check your oil is something I'd expect from a mustang owner. Like you needed to devote that much time to this as if it's some sort of eye opener. Didn't put the oil filter on tightly enough? Really? Couldn't manage that 20 ft-lbs, huh? Gotta look out for that one lol. Fuck's sake. I see a mustang and think clown immediately. This is part of the reason why.
Hey Speed Phenom. I noticed your airbag light is on, as is mine. It came on around 1000 miles. I have 4000 now. Any insight on it? Have you had the dealer look at it?
Pop the hood, see that dipstick? Pull it and Check your oil....what an amazing concept 😑 too bad most people need a light or something to tell them what’s going on. Oh nooo let’s blame the car for owners negligence...
I know only one guy that has a GT350. Unfortunately, the one guy I know with a GT350 had his engine blow up...Ford won't fix it because he had installed solid bushings in the rear suspension. True story.
I’ve been busting wrenches for 60 years. I wish young non mechanics with not busted knuckles would stop offering bad advice. It’s well known that the GT350 up to 2019 had oil issues. It had nothing to do about driver input. You look pretty young but rich to run the vast release of info. No hard time building or fixing !
GREAT VIDEO. AND VERY INFORMATIVE. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THIS--- COMMON SENSE !! GOD BLESS!!! 😎🙏🇺🇸 THANKS FOR YOU HARD WORK AND YOUR VALUABLE TIME. LATER!
I have a supercharged gt350. Built originally by Hennessey - has the HPE 850 package. But worked and tuned by DBR High Perf and Lund Perf. Mine consumes oil. Had a discussion about that with some folks and thought maybe it had to do with the blower. Maybe partly, but it’s that high rev. The oil, so I’ve heard (no expert here) gets by the rings because unless you are shifting at a high RPM consistently, the rings aren’t necessarily sealing. Even regular track use, you still street drive it and I assume most of use hear the absolute screaming and short shift. I do. I know I do. And I consume oil. I know that too. So I check my oil....ALL THE TIME.
I love these cars and yes it’s kept me from buying one. I have a E93 M3 V8 revs to 8400. Burns NO oil. I have lots of other cars they burn no oil. I have a V8 panamera Turbo it burns a little bit if driven very hard. But it’s 130k miles. Love the GT350 and might go for it. I believe it the best mustang ever made and probably ever will be made. Cheers boys.

Regardless of how long the oil has been in your car, you should change it. Being that the engine is in break-in mode. 550 miles is enough for the first oil change. Flush out any of those break-in particles. Examine the used oil and look for metallic flakes. Also, a lot of people are recommending Amsoil. Saying it helps with oil consumption.
@@DH-zj9jb thank you man.. Very good advice.. I will defiantly do that.. Hey I wonser if the oil filter is something the auto parts stores carry. Cause its a special spec as I can tell.. Do you know offhand?
Yes 550 miles change the oil it is a new car with its original oil still in it. I run Redline in my Boss which is a little less expensive than Amsoil and a better oil.
Mustang Scott76 you could check with your local parts store. Or get the filter online. Late model restoration sells um. It’s my understanding that pre 02/17 models use spin on element FL-2069-ST. Post 02/17 cars use the cartridge style unit FL-2062. Maybe just open your oil filter access door and confirm b4 you purchase.
I like how Fords response as a way to blame you first, in it's response to oil consumption..."did you tighten the oil filter"😂😂 Come on Ford.... @@hairedesigned3833 5W - 50 ... is recommended "only" for the 5.2 engine. Read the manual closely! The 5.2 is purpose built as a high performance engine (whether you drive it hard - or not)! This does not cover uses in dusty, high stress, high heat or racing applications. If you are regularly going to stress your 5.0, common sense suggests that you make 'other' choices. Stress can 'reasonably' be assumed if you are running an after market supercharger, blower; matter of fact - if you install any of the popular superchargers - they commonly recommend / require that you need to use 5w - 50 (synthetic) oil.... due to the higher heat caused by extra power as well as 100 lbs power adder siting on top of the intake.
I got rid of mines it was drinking 8 quarts every 1000-1100 miles I only drove the car on the weekends hard. Not only are the cars more fun to drive, they'll also be much more valuable. Sorry you got stuck with the Getrag. You should have at least gotten a Mach 1.
What I never understood was why didn't Ford put a shift light in that crazy complicated gauge package. I'm mean really you can know head cylinder temp but no shift light on a 8200rpm motor. My Honda si had one. My $15000+ over the honda GT and the gt350 does not. Makes no sense
You guys really believe this crap? obviously there's a ring/piston issue, or could possibly even be valve issues not sealing oil properly, but I think it's a poor piston ring design and 8250 rpm has nothing to do with oil consumption. 4 stroke dirt bikes rev from 11 000 rpm to 14 000 rpm and don't consume oils, street bike revs over 14 000 rpm and they don't consume oil. my procharge 3v gt revs 7800 rpm makes 771 whp and doesn't consume oil. I really wanted to to buy a gt350 next year..... but I guess I'll pass. Now is this harmful for the engine having high oil consumption. Yes and no, if there's too much it will gum up valves, start fouling plugs and eventually might result in low compression and excessive blow by, but it doesn't mean the engine will blow up in thousand pieces, but it means in a few more KM the engine needs to come out and you will need to replace or pay someone to replace all piston rings, and hone the cylinders. to get the engine to seal properly again and so far looking at all the excessive oil consumption problems, they happen around 30 000 to 50 000 miles so every 2 - 3 years. that is pretty sad. Only thing that might get me to buy this car is if an aftermarket company makes aftermarket piston and rings that have a better seal then OEM. Good luck on your top end rebuild. it is coming
What makes me laugh is that the same ass clowns that gave rotary engines a bad rap for eating out (by design) are not saying that same about this car. I guess if it’s a Ford it’s okay. 😂 I have a GT350 and an RX-8 and appreciate both.
People go from Honda Accord to a GT350 and assume the oil is full and never check it.

It should NOT EVER consume 🛢 unless it had mayne a few hundred thousand miles on it.
interesting... but false info.

Does anyone know why there was so much consumption?
@@gtrance3567 the piston rings that are badly designed can burn oil. most likely a poor design

So loose clearances or not, where does the oil go? It gets burned. Is it possible to to a harder engine break in and seat the piston rings better and lessen this oil consumption? I did this with my camaro and I don’t believe it has any oil consumption issues. I could be wrong though
The oil pump was another reason 5.0 and 5.2 mustangs blow the engine
Checking the oil level is car maintenance 101. You should be checking it along with tire pressure every week no matter the type of car.
A fresh built NASCAR engine will use 2-3 quarts in a 500 mile race
I hear a lot of them having rod knock I assume bad rod bearings probably due to the high rpm and the crank on a flat plane is not very good for vibration which causes premature failure.
Greg Williams Well you’re going to have high heat and wear when you run it at higher rpm than not. All vehicle’s will do this under the condition he is driving. The oil goes away because of the heat and that turns it into a vapor which goes by the rings or elsewhere in the engine. The heat is the killer of a engine and it doesn’t matter what you want to say about it shouldn’t be using that much oil. JMO

@@extremedrivr ALL cars consume oil.. some more than others.. The gt350 does consume an abnormal amount
I check the oil in my 08 GT500 once a week and after i drive like a teenager.
See that!!
Thank you for having a properly designed engine.
So true. Good Video 👍🏼 no worries with the 2016 GT350
Question, should I buy a 2017 Shelby gt350 with 25,000 miles? The more I read the more I wonder if I should. This Shelby is being sold at a dealership
This does make a lot of sense. I check my 2017 gt350 oil level at least once a week or more, especially after driving higher up in the rpm’s.
I have a 17 Gt350. It’s at the Ford dealer now waiting for Ford to get involved. It’s consuming one quart or oil every 157 miles.
I qt every 500 miles?!?!?!? WTF ! My ZL1 is a trackcar and eats gas and tires but not oil

As a direct comparison, I just recently went on a road trip with my 17 Whipple GT and my friends 17 GT350. We drove 7000km from Alberta, Canada down to San Diego, back up the coast and home.
Damn that sucks
Other than the oil consumption, was it fun to drive on the tour?
I had an old Chevy in college that used a quart a week. What’s the big deal? LOL!

This made me laugh pretty good.

Mustang Scott76 you could check with your local parts store. Or get the filter online. Late model restoration sells um. It’s my understanding that pre 02/17 models use spin on element FL-2069-ST.
