What Does Bubble Tea Do To Your Body? The 30-Day Drinking Test

  • Is frequent drinking of bubble tea bad for your health? In Singapore, there are over 400 bubble tea stores - from MilkSha, Gongcha, Koi, to Tiger Sugar - each promising creative flavours and ingredients such as Brown Sugar Milk Tea, Milk Foam Alisan, Mango Matcha Latte and Creme Brulee Strawberry Latte.
Studies show that a cup of milk tea with pearls contains 8 teaspoons of sugar - 33% more than the daily recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO). Besides sugar, this highly sought-after beverage also contains a significant amount of caffeine.
But to what extent does consuming bubble tea have on our health?
In this month-long drinking test, #TalkingPoint host Steven Chia finds out the side effects and health risks of consuming bubble tea, by drinking 3 cups of bubble tea a week - the average amount a bubble tea lover in Singapore drinks. His weight, inflammatory markers and cholesterol level were closely monitored over the course of these 30 days.

So, I used to work next door to a boba tea shop in a mall. I love boba tea. I got it at least once, sometimes twice a day. usually it was an iced black tea, non-dairy creamer, no sweetner, honey popping boba (and coffee jelly if I was feeling fancy). They eventually started making the tea when they saw me in line. And eventually we became friends and they stopped charging me altogether. (Love my boba tea friends you are the real MVPs) I lost 20lbs because I wasn't eating garbage and filling up on tea. If you are get 100% sweetener, it's not really a surprise; you're gonna have a bad time

bubble milk tea is basically dessert in a cup. its caloric value is anywhere between 200 and 300 calories depending on type and size. it's equivalent to consuming 2-3 scoops of ice cream daily. I personally don't get milk tea with boba every day - maybe once or twice a week. So I'm sure I'll/we'll be alright. And let's be honest those who do love boba milk tea don't actually have it every day...unless of course, you are crazy and have given up on life.

But my BBT is just tea (green/black/oolong, etc), without milk, no sugar because I have the sugar from pearls 🤔

  • @lithong1200
    @lithong1200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I love BBT; it's food for the soul. But I always order 0% sugar if I am adding toppings, since most pearls are cooked with sugar and subsequently soaked in sugar water, so 0% sugar brewed tea with toppings is already mildly sweet. Tips for ordering a healthier BBT: 1. Plain brewed teas have the least calories, compared to flavoured teas, macchiatos and milk teas (with the same sugar level, toppings added). 2. Choose 0% or 25% sugar level (lesser sugar added, lesser calorie). 3. Choose FRESH Milk Tea over Milk Tea (milk teas are, in general, made with creamer - artificial + unhealthy). 4. Avoid drinking macchiato (the foam cap is basically whipped cream - fattening) 5. Ask for less toppings (pearls are carbohydrates; the lesser you consume, the lower your calorie intake). 5. Choose healthier toppings like Konjac Jelly over Tapioca Pearls (Konjac Jelly at least have fibre, which can help you to feel full). 6. Opt for flavoured BBT made using FRESH fruit juice instead of those made using flavoured syrup (because it's artificial). P.S. I still LOVE my BBT. 😍

To be honest unless you're ordering a more traditional tea such as Jasmine, Assam, Oolong, Earl Grey, Ginseng and others like that (with Camellia sinensis) then what you're drinking isn't really tea, it's just an artificially flavored powder with dairy-free creamer.
Source: worked at a bubble tea shop. Strawberry, Honeydew, Taro, and other milk teas were artificially flavored mix powders. Matcha really depends; I've been both the Matcha essence and the artificial stuff. But yeah, way to be safe is to avoid these more complicated ones. Sorry guys, Taro made from the actual root isn't even a thing in probably 99% of bubble tea shops.

Although now I would like to see a video on a person living off coffee because you were doing a comparison. I'm genuinely curious and think that would make an awesome follow up video. 0 sugar and less ice for me. Because i add some toppings, and the toppings and the milk used already sweetened the tea.

Knowing how much sugar goes in bbt, i just cant bring myself to consume it.
Have not bought a bbt drink for more thn 3 years now.
I make my own macha latte at home if i have a craving for something sweet.

For someone that doesnt drink bbt at all to 3 times a week as a replacement for black coffee is a huge jump that is probably why his body reacted so much.

I had it pretty much every day for the last four weeks. I don’t sleep as good when drink it I’m tired more I also noticed I have to workout a lot more cardio to keep figure I want but pants still too tight. Wen I stopped a few days plus workout my figured went back to normal. If you want to stop and are addicted get it get it 50 percent-sugar then 25 percent sugar to get off it. It’s addicting. Then try to stop! I can’t see it being any better than Starbucks either … so atleast you can ask 25 percent sugar i I “think “ it’s less chemical than Starbucks. Some places make Thai tea and with 25 percent sugar it’s still good. You can get no sugar too Also there is truvia or take real honey with you too add to it yourself, Atleast your body knows how to digest honey and you get that feeling of driving and sipping something cold and good. ❤

There was an article where someone gave up drinking bubble tea for a month to save money to travel overseas. And she did, she managed to travel on first class, that was how much money she managed to save.
On the other hand, to be honest - when I saw the host at his house, he seems to have lost weight already.
