- Noob vs pro strategy Don't Starve Together, in this video I cover strategies noobs often use and pros often use to show the differences in playstyle, instead of just the difference in execution. This includes things like ruins rushing, and using football helmets and hambats, instead of spears, garlands, winter gear, and improved farms. This video covers some traps the game lays out for noobs, and how pros avoid them.

Noobs are very focused on immediate survival.
First, they will find a spot they want to build a base, this may be at spawn, or next to a herd of beefalo for protection, or near the pig king. They then will set up their base as soon as they have the resources.
Meanwhile, a pro has a different start, they will begin by either rushing the ruins, or exploring the outline of the world depending on what character they are playing. If they're playing Wolfgang, WX78, Wortox, even Wendy sometimes, it's a good idea to rush the ruins. If they're playing Wickerbottom or another utility character, they may want to outline the world instead. During this, a pro will gather a weapon and armor no matter which strategy they use, to make certain they can protect themselves. This is usually a hambat and football helmet, due to how easy they are to obtain and how strong they are. The ham bat deals 59.5 damage, and has infinite durability - although it will spoil, and as it spoils it will do less damage. The ham bat only takes a measly one pig skin, 2 big meat, and two sticks to craft. The football helmet protects from 80% of physical damage, and only takes a rope and a pig skin to craft.
Next, the noob will start on building farms or some other structure to help with food production, before even building a weapon and armor. Maybe they go out and search for gears for an ice box with no decent weapon or armor and end up dying here, or they may even die to the first hound attack here. Both of those are fairly unlikely though, even for a new player, but what is common is sanity getting low by this point, unless they restore it. They may start picking flowers nearby the base, and build a garland at this point. This is something a player should never do, as flowers are an easy source of health and hunger through the butterflies they spawn - a pro may even avoid staying sane altogether as being insane helps gather valuable nightmare fuel. Now, as the noob builds their farms or other food structures, they will have a heavy focus on restoring sanity, so they may even start to build drying racks here, which along with farms, are both very resource intensive and take a huge amount of time to build for what you get out of them. By the time they finish up their food structures, it's likely around day 15-20 if they are quick.
Now, the pro, they either just came back from the ruins, or finished their exploration of the world. The ruins rusher will have way stronger gear, such as the thulecite crown that protects from 90% of damage, and has a 33% chance to summon an invincibility orb every time the player is hit while wearing it. They'll also have a lot of gears, 15-30, a bunch of frazzled wires to give to the pig king, 30-60, gems, and a bunch of nightmare fuel. The player exploring will have gathered resources to build a decent base with a few crock pots, at least one ice box, a bird cage, and a fire pit, along with gathering other useful resources and knowing exactly where everything is on the surface map. The ruins rusher normally finishes the ruins by day 10, and will immediately start searching for the dragonfly desert to base in, and the pig king to turn in their frazzled wires for some gold. They'll normally have an okay base set up by day 15-20, but not as good as the one exploring the world. The world explorer normally finishes the map by day 8, and gets to work on a base, this is often times in the oasis desert to avoid spontaneous combustion in summer, but I would recommend the dragonfly desert as it provides more resources such as tumbleweeds and you can head underground to completely avoid the downsides of summer.

I honestly loved the beginners curve in this game. Every time you died you would come back a little bit stronger and make it past whatever killed you last time but then quickly get killed by something else. Rinse and repeat until you learned how to make intelligent decisions in the spur of the moment.

I would survive 3-6 days and die from starvation. Now I’m surviving over 200 days no problem. Now I have to learn about the caves.
Caves are good early game for bunnymen farm. Easy meatballs in winter.
I would rather cook them on a fire because the meat and three carrots cooked give you the same amount of hunger as a meatball but more hp and you don’t even need a crockpot

I once had a world where there were 3 to 5 moose gooses around one area, the result was well, exactly as you described infinite meat and feathers for weather pains.

Brought some frogs to two beefalo herds in frog rain once. There by the time the rain stopped we had a net of over 250 frog legs.

I remember the 1st time I killed Deerclopse... Not really knowing much about anything, and sacrificing about 10 pigs and 4 of their huts in the process. I was so happy when he died. I gathered all the meat, stuck it on my drying racks. Never knew what to do with the eye... So I ate it. I remember thinking, "That wasn't even as good as the mandrake soup from earlier" *facepalm*. Oh the noob days lol

To be fair, I'm not sure if rushing the ruins to get all the good gear is a noob or pro move. It's more of a challenge to slug your way through the game with crappy equipment.
The video did include the non ruins rusher playstyle though, exploring the edge of the map and building a mega base in the oasis desert
I blame world generation for not giving me enough light bulbs near the cave entrance and now I can't explore the ruins
I like how it's still the same type of content but it's not actually triggering and more "suggestion" based rather than obligation.

Pros focus more on valuable resources and always prepare for the next big target like seasonal bosses or dfly while the only thing noobs care about is to stay barely alive and run away from danger all the time

1000 plus hours into the game and never felt the need to rush anything, ruins, bosses or anything.
Never looked at DST as a pro/noob game. Next thing sims, animal crossing and something else is supposed to be played a specific way :D

The reason you have 1000+ hours is because you didn't rush things. If you rushed things you would have done everything in the game more times than you can count by your 250th hour and moved onto a new game.
The only exception to this is content creators like rick who continue playing for the sake of blessing you fools with glorious knowledge and challenge runs.
Out of that 1000+ hours you have spent on this game, a large percentage of it was spent just doing nothing/ boring repetitive tasks and passing the days, and probably using sgm to afk for drops. Sounds boring as shit time well spent!
Every game has pros and noobs. For this game it comes down to efficiency, as DST at it's core is a game about time management.

No, DST barely has any content to really be played like sims, animal crossing or whatever. Realisticly, if you play like super slowly, by the time you get to day 400 or so, you probably did everything there is in the game.

Honestly, the best thing you can do early is just map out the world. Run around the edges, gather resources on the way but not in abundance, just as much as you need and take opportunities that are given to you. See a bunch of grass gekkos bunched up? Run into them and get 10-ish grass. Move on. Just don't spend days chopping trees and picking twigs etc. But most importantly, have fun and play however you want man. Everybody has their own preference on how to survive in the Constant :)

Fuck that. Anyone with half a brain runs the roads in search of the 1st segments of key locations. Swamp/PK/Desert/Quarry. You literally get set up in 1/8th to 1/16th the time with all of the same things as the fool running slowly around the edges of the world. By the time he circled the map, the road runners have a full base with everything they need.

One of my friends complained to me that the game was impossible to pass day 1 since the darkness kills them immediately. Then I asked them about torches, then they replied "There are torches?".

Football helmets are op for their cost btw 80% damage reduction for one pig skin and rope. In conclusion football helmets are god tier items.

I don't like playing it like the Pro strat.
I like to keep it simple, build my base, then fight bosses. I like to explore my world and see how long I can survive.
But I can make a world just trying Pro strat.
I don't fully follow Noob strat either. I take time to build base, rush food, rush recourses, make sure I can survive winter and summer, and I do good. Just finished summer, 2 times. It's harder to rush ruins or anything else when you're on console like PS4 because of lag, harder to kite, you can't teleport as far with Wortox, etc.
It'll be my first time rushing on a world.

@@darienlizama7449 There are definitive strategies that improve rates of survival, to say there aren't is foolish. The methods outlined in this video shows the inefficient playstyle of a new player, vs. a pro player. DST is a race against time, anywhere that you can move faster to gather more items is better. Just because a game doesn't measure what better play is does not mean your incredibly inefficient play style is fine and just the same as better play styles.
@@EdgyRick DST is not exactly a race against time, you can take it as slow as you can. though being faster is a great strategy it is not the completely necessary, also there are many ways to be fast without going to the ruins, and even one of your examples didn't involve speed and more involved exploration. not only that but my "inefficient" play style has in fact allowed me to survive for very long. a noob vs pro" example is not accurate as there are many things a "noob" can do that might stick or even help players further in their experience with the game. one thing i want you to know is that your examples aren't the best and they aren't meant for everyone. we all have play styles that can differ and still be just as effective as the other. please try to see your strategy as an opinion instead of straight up fact. i apologize for the long rant though i don't want you to take it as me saying your play style is stupid, just that it isn't necessarily the number one choice.
@@darienlizama7449 My playstyle isn't meant for everyone yes - but also just because you survived for a long time doesn't mean you are good or playing in an efficient manner. My playstyle is the most effective playstyle, period, full stop. This is why I can do challenge runs such as survive with my maximum hp modded to 1 for 100 days without much issue (th-cam.com/video/FbFo4CA_1pI/w-d-xo.html), whereas for a normal player that would be a hellish experience. I also finish much more content in a much faster time period than a normal player would and "finish" the game, faster than one would (by killing the Ancient Fuelweaver.)
On this channel I only teach the absolute best methods because everything in-between is simply a waste of time if you can skip right to the end - the absolute best tactics. Some players will never be good enough to handle such tactics, or don't want to play fast - and that's fine, but this channel isn't meant for them, and it wouldn't be fair to the players who want to learn the best tactics for me to water down my content by adding some unnecessary garbage to the mix for them.

I’m such a noob! And I love it because I’m having fun and enjoy the game my way. Nothing worse matters pro or noob it’s just a label, having fun is the important thing.
I do farm, live somewhat near beefs but far enough so they dont make my life a pain during spring, don’t really rush the ruins much and I usually only live for around 150 days so I may be a noob and tell me if I am
i think it's a good playstyle, if you know how to kite, how to survive all seasons and know the important crockpot recipes i think you should be able to survive forever. you're probably not a noob, Edgy Rick just has his very Ruins-rushing playstyle that he just can't live without for some random reason
Basically anyone can survive indefinitely, also don't prioritize beefalo as basically anything they do is superseded by things like bunnyman farms and pig lightbulb farming. Also I see alot of people are afraid of going to the ruins, but you really shouldn't be, the loot there is amazing, and they aren't hard if you are prepared.
no 150 days is rather good farms are good dragonfruit pie is great after it is rolling just one dragonfruit and 3 twig for 40 hp is good also ruins rush is not needed it can help but is not needed

@@venturoes1912 as a wx main who fully understands the value of ruins loot more that most others, I still usually don't rush the ruins unless I don't come across any clockwork in the overworld while looking to camp. Usually I can fit about an entire base on the go while looking for a spot to camp (2 crockpots, 8 dry racks, alchemy, fire pit, lightning rod, 2-3 chests, 40 pinecones, 50 grass tufts and 30 saplings). After basing on about day 3-4 I mass pick flowers til I have about 50 to feed to the pig king's villagers for poop before I hammer all their houses to bring home and rebuild like 5 pig houses while grabbing a tier 3 spider den from the set piece on the way back home. Then a net for fireflies and a beefallo horn and wool by like day 8-9 and I'm pretty much set for winter. I usually then go for tentacle spikes but not always. Where I go from there is usually where I try different stuff cuz at that point everything needed to survive spring and summer just falls into place.

Well the noob start does work though, I got to winter with my friend until we accidentally aggro'd like 30 hounds at once.
I find both ways as a good fun, ruin rushing can get repetitive tho. If you already have the best loot you tend to lose the drive to keep playing. Boss rushing is the most fun in my opinion get in a world to boss rush and repeat it's different every time. Makes me wish there was more challenge modes like in adventure.

So Pros fight the guardian next to the void and lose Guardian"s horn. Interesting.
Its disturbing how accurate this is to what I see on public servers.
This has helped me a bit, i've rushed the ruins with WX-78 for a fully upgraded robo-boi but i needed tips on winter, due to the fact that i set up a temp base at dragonfly to kill him for the scaled furnace and gems, so i make my base in winter.
Other players: burns tree for warmth

I never researched the game to the extent to allow me to play on a pro level micro-wise.
However over many attempts at the constant my macro got good enough where I would do many of these noob strats and had zero trouble surviving as long as I want.
The problem is you don't reach the games full potential despite being able to survive consistently. That can get boring after your first year.
Your vids have opened up some new play styles but to claim those strategies as "noob" is a little too naive.

I don't see why so many people died to Deerclops. I find him really easy, like one time I was playing Wendy and I hadn't really prepared for the Deerclops fight at all, I didn't have sanity food or anything, all I really had was a football helmet, a couple pierogi's, and a tentacle spike. So I was really not very prepared, but I still easily killed him, keep in mind I was playing Wendy who is famously bad for giants because she does such little damage and Abbigail is pretty useless against them. The only part I really had trouble with was dealing with the shadow creatures after the fight, because the fight went on for so long and I had nothing to raise my sanity, and I was getting dogpiled by like 3 terrorbeaks, but I still pulled through that and went on to summer.
summary: just play however u want and if its fun, then u doing it right :) dont be toxic bc someone isnt playing right, they will get it eventually

Ye. Ima probably just do what is fun. Rn I am enjoying a world I started as wortox. I played a game a WX once. Honestly, the only things I can recommend is have fun.

Base by day 8? I usually don’t start mine till day 14, but by that point I’ve got so much pre-built and tons of supplies because part of my strat includes building a science machine while exploring to get some key recipes, then smashing it before continuing.

Carlos Augusto dragonpie still are good food for hunger, maybe best to use farm plots on but Pierogi is still better early game

This is great for people like me who are not 100% a noob, but not really a pro either. I am a wicker main and usually try to set up base near a swamp, but suck at kiting and die from a tentacle, even though I can get other things to fight them, but I want to learn and get better at kiting and the same thing happens during winter. Bad kiting usually leads me to dying from Clops.. At least I can admit I am not a pro or a noob. I have the knowledge with the game, but need more practical experience by trying out what others have done. Thank you Rick for these videos!!!

Whereas "noob" is a term that can be used in this game to a certain degree (until the point you can actually keep yourself alive indeterminately), "pro" is a little bit more controversial. There is no real meta-game. No real way to say "yes, this is what a pro does". Knowing a single build order for a specific subset of characters does not strike me as a "pro gaming", in any game. It's like saying "i'm a pro age of empires 2 player, but I only play with the best three civs and use only this techniques". But, at least there is a clear and concrete end in an AOE2 game. There are ways to know if a player is pro or not (time, accuracy, speed, score, strategies, build orders): a pro player, knowing all the aforementioned factors, will behave in a similar manner to the rest of the "pro players" while evolving alongside the metagame. (for the ones who does not know what "meta game" means, it is just the "most efficient tactic available". The word itself says it: the most efficient tactic available, which means, to achieve some goal.
But in DST, there is no concrete end nor goal, one can say that dont starving isn't even the whole point of the game. It's up to the player to decide what to do. Rushing ruins is as valid as, say, making a megabase on the overworld, going full nomad, making a megabase in the caves, or a sea base, or whatever. And all this styles of game are totally valid, and they all have their complexities if you go to the high end spectrum. For example, making a megabase, maintaining it, and making it aesthetically pleasing (which can be an important factor for a player, and can also have the same relevance as another aspects of the game as well) can be hard, and requires a different level of focus and commitment, than, say, rushing the ruins.
After knowing all the mechanics, internals, details (from the basic stats and day cycle up to knowing spoilage times, cook recipes, combat, character-based strategies, team combinations, etc... the list can go far), you just have to do whatever the f**k you want, and you can become a pro in doing what you do. Maybe you just want to be the best at, idk, exploring the world? That's totally valid.
So, actually being a pro cannot mean you "rush the ruins and blabla wolfgang/wicker/wendy"... You should be good at every fucking single possible gameplay style, just as it happens in every game. You may be not the best in every style, but saying that "pro equals one style" is not acknowledging what other gamestyles can offer regarding complexities, richness or experiences. And I didn't speak about the social factor of it, because only applies to DST.
This is why I think the "pro" term in this game is, as minimum, controversial. I play regularly with a friend who likes to base ASAP, and he practically gives a f**k about the location! And, hey, this can make things more difficult, and maybe as a result of the added intensity of the gameplay (not having everything you need close, for example), the experience tends to be more fun, a little less "comfort-zone-ish" overall. So, you may end up thinking about surpassing things you would not be facing having you selected "the perfect base spot".
So, make whatever the f**k you want. In the end, after having some knowledge (apart from the basic ones), there are multiple ways to have fun... and you know, you bought the game to have fun. Don't forget that.
Said all this, I do like a lot your videos, they're fun. But can be a little intoxicating for people who swallows everything the hear/see. They may end up trolling or being aggro to other players because of not accepting the freedom of the game.

I think this is the first time rick mentioned that something a pro can do is megabasing. And i think its also the first time Rick mentioned living further than day 35. Usually he kills all the raid bosses he likes by then and deletes the world.
I still really dislike the idea behind megabasing, this game just does not work well for it. There isn't much room for creativity and it actively tries to destroy your work.
Also, killing raid bosses and deleting world is what DST is made for fight me.

In all seriousness, DST is really poorly made for any sort of endgame. Megabasing is just bored casual players trying anything they can to squeeze out more content from the game.

I pick flowers you only need one in your general location and they provide decent rot for grass toughs and you get the same amount of butterflies from just one also I would recommend not going for berry bushes as you can get tons of perogi/ meatballs with cactus and spiders/hound mound.

I think you mean how effective it can be to completely circumvent the games challenges. There are plenty of players that are exactly like described in the video. Beating Dark Souls doesn't make it easy. It means it is beatable challenge.
I don’t really get your dark souls comparison. Getting end game gear quickly and easily means you have the skill to do any boss, and end game gear to kill them with.
@@SVJLuna with DST the point isn't to kill the bosses. It's to survive the longer. So when you're the god of your world you can pass to the next or makeup your own goals. So having the endgame gear doesn't make sure you'll be able to do everything you want.
And by the way noobs like me are not good enough to actually kill all those bosses even with endgame gears as timing is of the essence and it's not as easier said than done. 😋
Its mainly due to how easy it is to acquire a ham bat and football helmet. Pig houses give too many resources from hammering them.
Isabelle Colmont Well you can survive infinitely but there are endgame bosses to fight, the “hardest” challenge of the game. If you can ruins rush you can do anything else, with the op gear to survive anything that happens. If you somehow can’t kill deerclops with thulecite gear you will not be able to ruins rush in the first place.

Frog rain? Easy, go to mose gose or beffalo (If go to the beffalo and have near your base you can get 60-120 frog meat ;)

Thing about sanity is that I dont have a problem with being insane but the sounds it makes. Cant stand that but I like the other game sounds .
You can actually turn it off with a client side mod.
I also recommend a mod to mute the sound that the flies on top of manure makes.

Frog Rain + Beffalo Hord = Endless Meat production
Quite long frog rait will result in many frogs and they easily kill one Hord. It's best to use them on Moose/Goose untill they kill all of them around. Another options is to run away from frogs and they will dissapear next morning because they jump into a pond at evening if rain stopped.
I'm glad I'm still a noob that doesn't know much and do all the noob things. The pro route seems like just going through the motions and very boring if you know all the tricks.
To be fair this game is extremely beginner unfriendly and takes a ton of trial and error to get better
bruh i keep playing with some of my new friends and they don't notice when their football helmet breaks it's frustrating as they expect me to know everything and i am mediocre at best
