    To stop the lagginess especially in Offline Mode in DST, you currently have the option to turn off Lag Prediction, which was the whole reason it existed.

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +259

      I actually forgot to mention that in the video, but yes, all DST players should turn off the predictive lag setting. However, I don't think it makes any difference if you are in offline mode. There still is that slight input delay when I have tried it.

    I don't really play any game beside a casual mobile game, but when I saw volx(?) dont starve gameplay, I decide to give it a try in 2015, and that was when I fell in love with the game. they have everything I wanted in a game: survival, sandbox, and really unique! also, I really like the game design, they're cute but has a horror touch on them, and that is amazing! I must say I'm not really good at boss fighting and spend most of my time to build a mega base, but that is why I love dont starve, you can just leave alone the bosses and fighting them later whenever you're ready. not to mention the dst content is top tier with their story line, the short animated videos, everything is *chefs kiss.

    Minor footnote: the Switch Version is the least updated version of DST, on launch on Switch it only had every update until the Webber Character Refresh (which was the first version of DST Switch), then came everything up to the WX refresh like Klei said, but Wolfgang's Mighty Gym is bugged, and finally we got the "A Little Drama" update, while the Maxwell Rework is on every other version

    This guide is fantastic, well laid out.
    As someone who has all versions on steam, Xbox, and a few of them on switch and PS4, I want to add 2 things -
    If you are console ONLY, console versions of the single player games have some glitches that were patched on PC years ago, but the console ports weren’t fixed for (there’s a seasonal glitch that happens with caves). It’s a huge pain late game but you can still get 100s of hours without having the problems. But, for console, DST doesn’t have those glitches, so I’d suggest DST if you’re going console only.
    The lag in DST he mentions IS a thing but you wouldn’t even realize it’s there most of the time unless you played solo for a while and switched. It’s more like input delay, just the tiniest bit always there, but he is right, the solo games are just a smoother experience. But the seasonal events in dst are great and the developers constant updates are great too.
    Fantastic video recap

    Controller was a great experience overall coming back to the game many years later, but there are minor issues with specific characters. Some can be fixed thanks to small mods though.
    For example Wendy can attack her ghostly sister and despawn her because there is no "force attack command" that prevents you from doing so (losing 50 sanity and a few days in the process) but a simple underrated workshop mod prevents it. (modding in the workshop is easy, just a few clicks really)
    On the other hand, Willow's lighter's command to light things on fire is the same as the one to start cooking things on the crockpot.It is easy to destroy it and lose ressources, food and time this way. I haven't found a solution to this one and i always end up doing it again at some point. (a simple torch also does this but you don't just walk around with one since it consumes itself).

    I have 400 hours in Don't Starve, loved the adventure mode especially, and the Shipwrecked DLC really clicked with me. Sure the endgame isn't quite as extensive as Reign of Giants or especially DST, but something about navigating the seas with relative ease (at least compared to DST) really did it for me and I sunk so much time into it. I still might get back into it and do playthroughs with more challenging characters. If all you know is DST then I can't vouch for the single player experience enough, especially Shipwrecked and Hamlet if you want that completely new experience.

    16:43 there are some mods which can change a few things so game is less "laggy" (don't starve alone is one of those) and you can even get mods that cut in half all monsters hp and can change some stuff so it is easier/better for solo playthrough. if there is a factor left unmentioned, it is couch co-op. As the internet rises, couch co-op is becoming a rarer feature, yet for the T in DST, it would go a long way to have couch co-op for pricing consideration, even if it was the singular advantage of console over the modding potential of PC. Probably not that hard to find on my own, but it is a key factor to consider for those who still enjoy playing with siblings, dorm-mates, party guests, etc., especially since vocal communication will always be more engaging without being a distraction compared to text.

It is much easier to convince people to buy a game if they can share the experience with others locally WITHOUT asking them to buy in themselves, and the environment of talking with someone in the same room about a game is vastly different than reading a text log when in a safe enough spot to interact with it.
      If continuing with a terraria comparison, one way to make a new player is to have a veteran in a world alongside a noob, explaining the basics without telling them to take a deep dive on a wiki. As the veteran prepares the noob and themselves for progression, the noob can wander around doing whatever they please while learning the controls, and the veteran can glance over to their side of the screen and try to break bad habits before they stick. Once the noob gets hooked, they are much more likely to buy it for themselves, and it is much easier to get a noob hooked if they dont need to make that initial buying investment. The flip side is if someone anticipates enjoying the game enough to become the veteran for someone else (like a younger brother or some other person they live with), the money investment becomes time-based potential instead. Couch co-op/split screen is a very niche factor, but for those who benefit, it is a very appealing one that can make a difference between purchases. Heck, for some, they buy a game exclusively because they can share it with those in their house and it satisfies a very specific itch for co-op or rivalry based game play.

      Oh, wait - I somehow put a response to a different comment on your...not sure how I did that....
      But yeah, couch co-op on consoles is definitely a big factor to consider that I totally forgot to mention. I probably would have gotten DST on the Switch (the only console I own) if it had 4-player so I could play with the whole family. Maybe if we end up getting a second switch at some point I will!!

    As you said on the video, there are items and resources that don't exist on DST. For example, on Shipwrecked there's Tar and Bioluminescence. Tar is the best fuel in the game, because it has the burning power of Boards, stacks up to 40 and you can collect in big numbers if you don't fear the Quacken. And Bioluminescence can fuel Lanterns and similar items the amount as Fireflies, but it's even more abundant, while also being cheaper to collect because while Fireflies require Ripe and Silk, Bioluminescence requires Rope and Bamboo, and Bamboo is easier to obtain than Silk. There's also the Cutlass Supreme on SW, which deals the same damage as a Dark Sword but does not drain Sanity. There's also Obsidian, which can be used to craft more efficient tools plus weapons and armor that can be taken to RoG to better fight the Dragonfly.

    I didn't even know this game existed back then, one of my friends gifted me dont starve together, we played it with like 5 people and it was a lot of fun! 2 of them quit after about a day because they lost interest in the game, but us 3 reached day 100 for the first time after months of constant dying and creating new worlds.
    Sadly, it was a few years ago we all quit so they wouldn't even remember this game but, i gained back a lot of interest for this game the past months and discovered i've done almost nothing in the past playthroughs. So recently, i have slayed almost every boss, played almost every character and actually learnt how to play them instead of mindlessly running around, did more boss speedruns etc. Now i take it slow, have about 600 days in 1 world and 800+ hours overall...
    So yeah... I'd definitely say Don't Starve Together is a clean choice, also not only does steam mods have insane QoL changes, theres also the "Uncomprimising Mode" mod which, literally offers much more quality, challenging content than a dlc.
    Theres also a lot of custom characters, weapons, enemies, bosses and so on.
    Another reason i would easily recommend DST is, the characters. They're so different from what they're in other games, so uniquely reworked and have much more replayability value.
    (!!One Last Thing!! i don't know if its illegal or something lmao but theres literally the shipwrecked version of dont starve in steam mods... so yeah...)

    If anyone is planning to get DST on steam, wants mods that add shipwrecked and hamlet content, and has a decent pc I recommend getting a mod called "tropical expericence".
    While it can be laggy, it adds both dlcs' contents and a little more additional stuff. If you want even more you could also add "creeps of the deeps", which gets addition content from the other mod.

Developed by Zarklord who later became a klei dev and a couple other notoriously skilled modders, it is the most bug-free and 'perfect' DST SW experience you'll get. They even have a functional seaworthy that links 4-shard servers which I don't believe TE has.
      Currently, Hamlet is also being developed.

    Honestly, I have no intention on playing DST anytime soon (No friends to play it with, and there's NO way I'm playing that one by myself. XD), but I recently picked DS 1 back up, and I gotta say, I'm having a decent amount of fun with it. Honestly, just changing some of the world settings makes it feel like a totally different game (I wouldn't recommend "Houndpocalypse" if you're a new player, though. Just trust me. XD).
    Yes, it's hard. Yes, you'll probably not last the first week in your initial runs. Don't feel embarrassed about it, though. That's part of the experience, and almost every player's been there. XD
    But you'll learn, and do better next time. (Or you can look at guides and wiki's ahead of time if you're not here for the "experience".)
    But yeah, good game. You'll def get your money's worth out of it.

      Yeah - for me learning the game was full of all sorts of frustrations, but that only fueled my desire to try again and do better, learn more, try again, do better, learn more, etc, etc. And yes - single player is a FANTASTIC game!! No need to jump into DST now or ever really. You'll have plenty of fun with the original, especially if you branch out into its expansions!

    Buy both. They always go on sale, always. Sam's for the shipwrecked and hamlet dlc. I got DST last year because my interest was peaked by the Terraria crossover update. Obviously me and my friends were terrible at it to start and ended up dropping it after a few games. I’m not usually one to give up on a cool game eventually so I came back and was really fascinated by how complex and deep everything in the game was and was determined to get better at it.
    Eventually I heard about don’t starve single player and retroactively bought the ultra pack (at a discounted price because I already had DST). I heard that the dlcs have a pretty linear difficulty progression with vanilla DS/pre ROG being the easiest so I’ve started there.
    I really love all the differences between versions like how farming is different and more complex in DST and how all the characters are preserved in their original states in classic DS. All these small differences add even more replay-ability imo which is great!
    After way more hours than I’m willing to admit I’m finally getting a little bit better at surviving and the DS series is quickly becoming one of my favourite games series even though I know I’ve only seen probably less than 5% of what is has to offer, which makes me so excited to keep going!

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, between DS and its DLCs and DST there is no shortage of options for playing the game. And the replayability value is insane!!

  • @minos_enjoyer

    Another consideration for people playing on steam is that there's already a very faithful SW port to DST (Island adventures), bugs and performance issues of which have already been dealt with. Smooth-running four-shard servers interconnected by a seaworthy are available, and it is compatible with mods like UM.
    Next up on the to-do list is an equally high-quality hamlet port.
    DS is more appealing for Hamlet and RoG ruins(wholly different experience, believe me on that).
    There's also tropical adventures; but unfortunately, that one doesn't have a very good reputation for reasons... (poor performance, incompatibility with updates(maxwell can't get fixed at all), interiors are pngs.)

    The more time passes, the better DST becomes, while DS is considered complete and won't have any expansions. There's really no reason to go for DS unless you have already played thousands of hours of DST, at that point you may want to see something new like the expansions DS has.
    I don't suggest DS to any of my friends even if they are more of a solo player, there's really no reason to go for DS as it hasn't received any updates since hamlet and that expansion was kind of left in a partially buggy state. Everyone has a decent PC now and playing DST there isn't that much of a difference in response time if you host your own server.

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I see it, it's kind of like going into an ice cream shop and picking a flavor. Do you go with the current new flavor of the month that has a fun mix of ingredients and is updated every month, or do you just want a tried and true rich and creamy vanilla? Both are good choices, but to say that you should never get vanilla because there are other flavors is a bit silly!

    • @000petar000
      @000petar000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@salendrak While that is true, DS will not get any more updates since klei decided not to work on hamlet.
      They decided to put full focus on DST and DS will keep getting outdated by DST like all the character refreshes that made all the characters much more fun.
      If DS was getting updated, i would have a reason to suggest it to my friends that have never played DS/DST, currently DST is just superior and it isn't just about the money, there's just too much content you are missing out on if you play DS.
      All DS/DST fans that have thousands of hours like me should play both DS and DST but for anyone new it isn't a good idea to get into DS first as there exist mods that make the game more accessible for solo play with new players like boss health scaling that mitigates most of the issues a new player would have.

      Treating the video as a "what are the differences between X and Y" I'd give it a 4/10 (Since well, detail was sparse to save time, and hell, we both know listing everything is unrealistic. Granted that'd be an instant 10/10.)
      Either way, good video. It won't prevent questions, but it'll answer them quickly at least.

      @@K-C-D-A Yeah, it really was intended as a surface-level overview for prospective buyers, so listing all the differences between the games not only would have made the video ridiculously long, but probably would have just confused the viewers that are the target audience. I generally find that making videos like this is an exercise in the art of triage - having to decide what to keep, and what to cut. And as I have a tendency to get pretty long-winded when I start writing something, I generally end up cutting a lot of the stuff that I originally thought I might want to include.

      Personally I think learning to survive a full year in Reign of Giants is the best way to learn basic survival mechanics. Once you can do that comfortably, you're ready for everything else! Though the other single player DLCs certainly do present new challenges, but that's half the fun!

  • @NefashusLP

      @salendrak  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally agree! They've done monetization right!

  • @ham8426
    @ham8426 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm definitely biased against DST due to its balance changes, some of which don't really make a lot of sense even considering multiplayer, as well as performance issues. But the prevalence of cosmetics puts me off the most as I just generally find such monetization to be predatory and user hostile even if it is "optional" and i don't personally need to engage with it, it doesn't stop it from ruining my experience when I open the game and get smacked in the face with login drops and ads for skins on sale. The fact that there are whole playable characters locked behind the same mtx scheme really sours it for me and I hold the glacial pace of "earning" the characters rather than paying for them as just more of a downside than a plus as again its a predatory way of encouraging paying rather than waiting.
    If you want to play with friends you really don't have an option but I would honestly recommend Raft over DST if you want a multiplayer survival game. For just enjoying the loop of a survival game without worrying about playing with friends then Don't Starve+Reign of Giants is the definitive experience, Shipwrecked and Hamlet are entirely optional and as mentioned in the video offer totally different experiences from the base game.
    It's worth noting that Shipwrecked was also an outsourced job and not inhouse Klei. I would argue to avoid shipwrecked as it was somewhat stunted in its development as it was initially going to be standalone like DST is, but the outcry from the community pushed them to integrate it into the base game which ate up a bunch of dev time and the features they focused on for Shipwrecked likely suffered as a result, and many of the gameplay loops of Shipwrecked feel unfinished or not well thought out, poison for example feels very poorly designed and will likely hit you frequently in the early game.
    I have no opinion in regards to Hamlet as I have not played it myself.

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  ปีที่แล้ว

      What?! Shipwrecked is great!! I've never really had much of a problem with poison personally. Usually the only times I get poisoned is when I wasn't being careful, but getting cured is pretty easy, and even the effects of the poison are pretty manageable so long as it isn't in the first day or two.
      As for Cosmetics, I totally get what you're saying! DST isn't nearly as bad as many other games these days, but overall that is still a practice that I don't particularly care for in modern games. I rather miss the days when you would buy a game, and have all that the game has to offer just from the purchase. My how times have changed!

    • @ham8426
      @ham8426 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not fond of SW, it feels very empty and hard to get things done, food is difficult to come by as are alot of other resources.
      poison can be handled easy if you can get to the one spot in a big empty map to find the item to craft the antivenom. The problem isn't so much finding that its avoid poison, randomly getting a snake dropping out of a tree, wandering onto an island that has poison gas geysers, and then you're stuck with an oppressive and performance destroying vignette till you get it sorted, and it likely will kill you if you don't have the cure ready or enough healing foods to survive long enough.
      Ocean combat is tedious and difficult, trying to use the canon is an expensive and unreliable option.
      And there's essentially no way to get the world to work for you, one of the brilliant parts of don't starve is recruiting pigmen to chop down forests, or getting hounds to throw themselves at a herd of angry beefalo. There's boars in shipwrecked but they're stuck to whatever island they spawned on, i can't really think of too many other ways you can leverage the world to your favour in the SW space.

    I just started playing days ago and I think you overlooked a very important aspect. The difficulty. Someone who started with the base game might not realize how hard it is to jump straight into ROG as a beginner. I got the full solo bundle because it was cheap, for future proofing, but my intention was to only play ROG until I mastered the game. And I have considered reverting back to the base game because of the new seasons. The spring rain and summer heat is unrealistically harsh, which really caught me off guard. How to deal with the summer also is a bit unintuitive and I had to do some research to figure out that you could craft those cooling reverse fireplaces. With the base game you can just focus on getting used to the mechanics, things to build, base building, learning to fight and managing HP and sanity. You still need to deal with the winter, but the winter feels more realistic and intuitive and this is how the game was initially designed. It's pretty clear that ROG was designed as a challenge for players who already were quite good at the game.
    I think ROG is worth it for the extra content and mechanics, but the base game should be less overwhelming when you're starting out and learning the ropes. Another option would be to turn off spring and summer. Then you still get access to most of the new additions from ROG but without having to deal with the crazy weather.

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was more of a buyer's guide though, not a discussion of what order you should actually play the various versions per se. My general recommendation if you do buy the single player version with all DLCs is to start out playing just Vanilla, and then quickly transition to Reign of Giants once you're able to survive through the winter in Vanilla. Once you feel you have a good handle of Reign of Giants, feel free to try out Shipwrecked, and once you've got a good handle of that one, try out Hamlet. But yeah - all of these games are pretty unintuitive in a lot of ways. That's a big part of the fun!!

    DS is also getting updates now from Klei to make it just a little more in-line with DST on some bosses, bees are not spiders anymore and so on and so on. They even added the integrated backpack and that's a MUST for me.
    To me though, to get to a good level on DST to play it alone you must invest a LOT of free time, while it's easier to learn and do things on DS because each game is balanced to Single or Multi player.
    The problem with DST is finding people who are cool into helping you learn the game or people who are interested into actually playing the game as a team. That's the sole reason I prefer DS over DST.
    I don't like the Hamlet DLC for DS because it is a very hard DLC, the difficulty spike is insane there. That being said, both games means you will be playing a freaking lot.
    I just wish DS had an option to NOT delete a world if you die, just like DST with the Endless mode. Frankly it's annoying when a single mistake breaks your game over 300-500 days on it XD.

    • @salendrak
      @salendrak  ปีที่แล้ว

      I always found that losing a longer day-count world both made me mad, but also made me feel challenged to start again and do better the next time. Which is a big part of the appeal of rogue-like types of games. And yeah, Hamlet is quite the early-game challenge, but once you get used to its quirks, it's not to bad.
