  • We’ve got a walk around and review of the legendary the Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck. A Japanese Kei truck, the Hijet is a reliable workhorse with a tiny footprint and it does not disappoint!
    As an import to the US, you don't see too many Hijets on the road but that also means they don’t come cheap. In this high level walk-around and drive we'll dig into the controls and features this 4x4 mini truck has to offer and see how it handles off the beaten pass to help determine it it’s worth the price.
    Feel free to ask any questions that you got on it, hope you enjoy!

    What's funny is that quite a few Japanese are now aware that Kei truck is kinda popular in the states and love the way they customise.
    There is a trend happening which is to lift and put off road tires like they do in the states.

    It was great to see the modern version of my 1996 4WD Hijet. Some states allow the older kei trucks to be driven on the street but federal regulations (DOT for safety and EPA for emissions) do not allow the newer kei trucks to be driven on roads. I think the EPA exemptions are 20 or 21 years old, but the DOT regulation exempts antique vehicles after 25 years old. If you want to drive on the road, your state must allow it AND imported vehicles must be over 25 years old to be exempt from both EPA and DOT regulations.
    The federal regulations purport to ensure that Americans are driving safer, less polluting and more efficient vehicles but in practice result in Americans driving less safe, more polluting and less efficient old vehicles. That said, many of the 25+ year old vehicles from Japan are in surprisingly good shape with very low miles.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  ปีที่แล้ว

      “Don’t fix what isn’t broke.” They really don’t change too often with the design being as solid as it is! Yeah the 25 year rule is the easiest way to import them but the way we did this one is certifying an off-road truck and getting it plated. Depends where you live but this is not legal advise haha!

    the mini truck looks great! Question: I thought the import "rules" on these mini trucks was that they had to be at least 25 years old. At least that's what I see people say on TH-cam when they purchased a mini truck. I have never seen such a new mini truck in the USA before. How did you get around this rule?

    • @robertelmo7736
      @robertelmo7736 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you can import them but can't drive them on the road as they don't meet current safety regulations? I think....

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There are a few ways but don’t quote me on laws, I’m not a lawyer haha. The 25 year old rule is the easiest way to import them, that rolling clock is constantly letting the ones right at 25 years make it in. What we did for this one is it is imported as an off-road vehicle to be used as work truck, think like a tractor or a dirt bike. In some states, if they pass the requirements like blinkers, ect, you can then go and get them inspected and approved by a judge then registered a the DOT to get a license plate so it is street legal. I’m sure there are still some stipulations about driving to other states, but what works works! This one will stay off-road most the time.

    I noticed you said that it went 50 mph. How did you get around the limitation of 25 mph? I’m getting one in a few weeks and would like to get that limiter off without paying somebody $350 to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Excellent question! I may not be too much help as this one did not have a limiter on it, but here’s what I found. From what I’m reading there are a few options they do for limiting, but probably a device that communicates with the speedo detecting the speed and then clicks the fuel pump on and off based on your top speed. So first I would determine that in your location it’s fully legal to have it off, then know how comfortable you are removing your dash to find it typically behind the center. You’re going to be cutting/splicing the wires jumping past the box entirely or in some cases I’ve seen people say cut the yellow wire, which should be the speedo signal in, meaning the device never tells the pump to shut off at any speed. I know this answer is very vague but there is a ton of variability on which vehicle and which device, and without working on it myself I can’t be sure. If you’re comfortable working on harnesses then it should be doable, I personally would, but know cutting the wrong wire may cause it to die completely and you may be in a worse spot than paying someone to do it!

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve not personally noticed any limiter on this truck, it revs however you throttle it, and for me the speed limiting was due to the 660cc engine being maxed out going about 55mph. At that speed with these tires it was getting itself into a death shake and the little engine didn’t seem to have much more in it to gain any speed. Does it have a governor typically?

    No price discussion. But last time I checked pricing, I couldn't justify the cost versus a good used 4x4 truck that is street legal making it much more functional. Lift bed? If you gotta have one, there are kits to turn you bed into a dump bed. Even the 20+ year old versions are in a price range that gets too close to a highway driveable, REAL truck. Just me, but it's more in comparing these mini trucks to an ATV.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s a good take! You’re totally right and I don’t think a mini-truck would fit the need for most people out there, especially with so many other great options, it’s more of a UTV that can go on the road. Difficulty to import increases the price which why you don’t see too many of them, but just perks of a free market, if you have the money and the desire then you can get your hands on one. Neat experience to drive though!

      Maintenance is also fairly convenient as well! It’s only not useful if you need to haul people, but I’ve got a video coming soon on the identical van version of this truck!

    What states is it legal in?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a tough question because there are a lot of states and not a blanket rule, it would be easier to figure out what each individual state’s rules are for tractor/farm equipment vs ORV vs car. Usually google can get you the details on which state says what!

  • @KLFaber
    @KLFaber 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If you had left the stock tires on it, you would feel a lot safer travelling at 55mph. I'm told that driving on those tires is like riding on basketballs.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  ปีที่แล้ว

      A new one like this with the tires and dump can come in at around $25k but you can find a huge variety of prices based off of Year, 2015 for about $14K, the older the lower the price.

    You buy a 2022 and make it street legal, or do they have to be 25 years old?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this instance yes, but it depends on the state you live in on how they are classified. For it to be more equal to a normal car and not considered equipment in many states it needs to be 25 years old.
