    That looks like my 1996 4WD Hijet with the HI/LO transfer case, TwinCam12V, and no A/C, just like yours, but mine had 44,000 miles when I bought it and was in a little rougher condition. No major issues just a couple of tiny spots starting to rust and a tiny scratch/ding on the left lower door. Mine developed an intermittent fuel pump problem that was cause it to stop a few times. The fuel pump was hot so it was stalled and not pumping. I ordered the inexpensive electric fuel pump on Amazon and was planning on hacking into the original fuel pump wiring to replace the fuel pump but it has never failed since then. I guess the impellers chewed up a little piece of rust that was jamming the fuel pump?
    I used Medium Quartz Gray Monstaliner polyurethane truck bed liner to paint the entire truck in October, but I still need to pull the dash, seats and door cards to paint the interior when it warms up this spring. I was going to heat the front bumper to eliminate the white aging but there were a couple of little gouges on mine (it was a farm truck near Yokohama) so I filled them with 5 minute epoxy, sanded the bumper and painted it with Rust-Oleum Trim and Bumper paint. Ditto for the rear view mirrors, and the triangular plastic accent panels inside and out.
    It's a great little work truck. I use it as a half ton pickup, same as my old Tacoma. I filled the bed to overflowing with freshly cut water maple firewood and hauled it to my buddy's farm 25 miles away... four times. I cut down a couple of trees in my back yard and piled the limbs TEN FEET above the bed, tossed three nylon cam straps over the top and cinched the limbs down until they were even with the top of the cab, cinched another nylon strap around the EIGHT FEET of limbs hanging out the back to keep them off the road, put a red flag on the back of the load, crawled up the 45 degree hill from my back yard and drove it 23 miles to the compost pad at the local dump. These kei trucks are *real* work trucks.
    People don't realize that the bed on these tiny kei trucks is slightly larger than a standard US pickup truck bed. There are no wheel wells jutting up into the bed to steal cargo space and make it difficult to carry drywall without it snapping in half when you hit a bump. The bed is low so it's much easier to load heavy items. The sides fold down to facilitate side loading, and the sides and tailgate can each be removed with a single 10 mm bolt. The numerous tie down hooks on the outside of the bed are much more useful than tie down hooks inside the bed.
    That Sony single DIN stereo looks great in there. I bought a double DIN ATOTO and four 6.5" marine speakers that I'm planning on adding in the corners of the cab ceiling to get them up out of harm's way and to take advantage of the abundant vertical space in the cab that's tiny in all other dimensions by American standards. I mostly got the ATOTO for the backup camera, DVR and Android with GPS to run my OSMand GPS navigation app. The stereo installation is slated for spring when the dash is removed for painting, as well as the other electrical work - heated reupholstered seats, remote entry central locking system, and lots of LED auxiliary lighting front and rear.
    I need to get some of those rubber rail caps for the tailgate and bed sides, but shipping from Japan is a killer on stuff like that.
    I've designed and 3D printed a lot of different things for my Hijet. 🙂
    My Hijet cost $265 plus $1935 for shipping, but the clutch was blown so I needed to put a clutch in it. It's my daily driver and I love it. I hardly drive my 4Runner, unless I have two passengers or, as you said, I need to tow something... like the one ton trailer and 1500 pound Hijet that I picked up at the port.

      Wow!! That’s a lot to read but it was a good read. You have done a lot more than I have to my truck. I’m still deciding on what else to do to it. The fuel pump was replaced with a cheap one and that resolved my stalling on hills. I love these little trucks and I drive it all the time. I paid a little more for mine, $2400, but it only had 6K Km’s on it and the interior looked new. One spot of rust on the tailgate but that’s it. You can probably get them cheaper now, bought mine at an auction in Japan during the pandemic.

      @@southerntraveler - You got a far better deal on your Hijet. The price has only gone up and continues to increase as Americans realize how great these little trucks are, as states (probably pushed by crony auto manufactures and dealers lobbyists) work even harder to outlaw kei trucks.

      @@Liberty4Ever The prices have gone up a bit. Some liberal states are trying to outlaw them and it sucks but they allow motorcycles. Not sure of the logic involved. Haha I agree, they are great lil trucks for the money and they will go, especially in the snow. I use mine way more than I even imagined.

    Thanks for sharing your HiJet truck. I've wanted one of these since 11 yo after seeing one at a WA State Park in 1969, it was a Cony 360. My dad had a Jeep FC150 very similar vehicle, very practical and handy work truck. What brand name of tires are you using?

    Heat with a butane torch? How close and how long do you hold it there?

    • @southerntraveler
      @southerntraveler  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I held it about 4” away from the bumper and went back and forth slowly. You’ll see the color change from old to new really quick. It’s easy to do and it looks great once you’re done. Just don’t hold it in one spot to long or else it will melt.

      Hey Jacques,
      I bought my truck from Japan with only 5K miles on it and it’s a 1996. The interior looked brand new, it came from an auction over there and took about 6 months to finally get it. I love the little truck and I drive it all the time.

      The Honda’s are really nice also. I wanted one of them but I found mine and it was low miles. The fastest I’ve had mine was 72 mph on the interstate. It’s wound out at that speed, the hills here are tough on the truck also and kills the speed.
