- The big brother to the legendary Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck, the Hijet Cargo is the Mini-Van for the fam. A Japanese Kei Mini Van taking the soul of the well-loved mini-truck and enclosing it with a rear bench, the Hijet is an unlikely 4x4 off-roader with a lot to offer.
Even less common than the Hijet Mini Truck, you won't see too many Hijets on the road but that makes this machine all the more fun. In this drive and walk-around we'll bring the full micro-van experience to you to learn what this 4x4 mini van brings to the table, to see if this quirky little car is worth the hassle.
Feel free to ask me any questions you have, hope you enjoy!

It is practical , inexpensive , and obtainable for a working class guy , therefore it will never be sold in the U.S.
That’s one way to put it!
Sad but true.
This K car is the typical “contractor car” in Japan. Plumbers, carpenters, landscapers, painters and many other tradies use it. The best is to see the customization that they so to the truck, installing shelves, containers and other stuff to carry all your tools and supplies. They can be like a whole office on wheels.!
Thanks for the interesting info! It’s like the blank canvas F150s used for similar services in the US, but I’m sure they have some incredibly well built machines for very special purposes! I’d love to see some of those builds in person for sure.
In many parts of the world , these types of min vans are very practical. I don't know why it shouldn't be practical in the US.
I’d say mainly from our longer roads and distances, I’d never recommend one of these to someone over say a Rav-4 on practicality if you had to own a single car, unless you had a very specific need! But that aside, it is a lot of fun and a great in-town work machine.
In USA 80% of vehicles are considered light trucks so emission requirements are easier. 1975 rule to make cleaner cars that backfired and is why so many vehicles sold in US are unnecessarily large.
It's an extremely practical van in most of the developing world, Japan and Europe, maybe not that much in the U.S. or Canada. It might be difficult for you to imagine, but this van is used as an ambulance, public transport, or an SUV alternative to carry bigger families in many parts of the world.
Oh I believe it! You are right, I’ve been all through Japan, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, India and have seen them being used in tons of ways! Super great machine with tons of uses. It’s the US with so much long distance space that’s it’s not so practical that I’m speaking towards but thanks for sharing!
Very cool vehicle. I like small vehicles
@@michaelrice6729 it is a blast! Not the best option for most people, but still a blast!
K is just the vehicle that we actually NEED, no more, no less
It would be great if they were a stronger option on the market.
Great little van and is practical. Lots of uses. I once owned a custom small truck, as apposed to a mini truck, with a tiny bonnet. This was for a front mounted radiator, motor was mid mounted.
It’s a canvas that can be used in many ways. Sounds like an interesting machine! What was the brand that made it?
@@PhilipBlank It was a one of custom built vehicle. It was originally a 1970`s Diahatsu Delta 3 ton truck. A FJ45 series troop carrier Toyota 4wd was the donor vehicle. The running gear was taken from the FJ 45. Motor, gear box, axles etc. The rear section of the body from the cab doors back was also used.
OMG thank you so much for your review... I've been looking for an English review. I really appreciate it. I love Kei cars/vans/trucks..
Happy to share! Love sharing the drive experience of whatever the machine. Let me know if you have any questions on it!
Not practical? This is all the car most people actually need xD I need one in my life. Great review!
Haha that may be fair, just would really dread the chance of a roll over from daily use. But definitely a fun and reliable little car!
@@PhilipBlanktime to change that perspective forced onto you by our culture.
@@goclunker Maybe! They seem to do decent in the crash testing you can look up but still not my choice for a daily!
Yeah they're good. I've lived in Japan over 20 years and have ahd a few Kei cars, including now. I have a Daihatsu Move. Kei cars are actually restricted by Japanese law in performance and shape when they build them. The reason they are boxed shape these days is because they have specific guidelines on size/dimensions as well as engine HP output. Most modern Kei cars are at the limit of that size.
That being said, it is common enough for people here to tune them up... although technically illegally. They're not getting supercars or anything but they definitely become more practical for keeping up with traffic. Well North American traffic anyway. Things are a bit slower over here.
@@ZaWyvern that’s some excellent info! Info like this can be harder to find with me not reading Japanese or being able to see the rules there. It’s a great size though, makes since the class is regulated to keep them from growing too larger or too much power. Traffic is not something this is every used for! Mostly off-road with these tires.
Gotta love the built in heated seats, that's a premium feature on other cars 😂
haha just need the AC seats now!
You don't feel any heat coming through, from the engine beneath you.
lol. at high rpm you get massage chairs too.
this is the perfect bush buggy, awesome, some remos and off the grid bush fishing and hunting
For sure, it’s a great little machine! Now it doesn’t have the ground clearance for too much off-road or washed out terrain compared to a side by side, but field and trail use it works well!
nice vehicle... thank you for sharing the reviews👍👍
My pleasure! Thanks for the kind words.
Holy crap
That's very cool, I want one 👍👍
It’s fun that it’s unique! Little niche van haha
I simply love small cars/vans/etc...

I'd kill to have one of those!
Hopefully you don’t have to haha
These are pretty neat;
Very neat indeed.
I love it
Me too!
I wouldn't mind having a left-hand drive version.
For sure, right hand is always a joy though.
In Kenya these are used as tiny sharetaxis. The operators add a bench seat to the rear of the cargo area to make an 8 seater (Yeah, it's a squeeze). They are really good at that and fares are cheap, especially for areas where buses or matatus don't operate.
Seems like a great use! 8 people is a lot for sure, that would not pass the safety rules in the US haha but super reliable and the things just keep going!
And thanks for sharing! It’s always great to learn more about these neat cars around the world!
@@PhilipBlank And thank you for the great content.

Where do you buy one in the US and how much do they cost? Can these bad boy do 70 on the freeway?
1: Depends on the state but online is the place to start. 2: $5-25k, depended on the milage and year. 3: Thank goodness no with these tires, the thing shakes like nuts haha but most off-road vehicles are not allowed on a free-way.
Perfect little run about vehicle… shame it is virtually impossible to register for street use in most states… kinda like the Mahendra Roxor. If anybody knows states where this is possible, please chime in.
For sure! I’ve not driven a Roxane yet but it does look like a blast for simple trips! Part of being simple and not a certified car I suppose.
日本の軽自動車はピックアップトラックほど頑丈ではありませんがオートバイよりかはるかに安全です!

Of course it is almost impossible to register this type of vehicle in most states because American motor companies are scared of the competition. The answer is American motor companies must start making vehicle like this one.
Bring here in PH
small and light weight, this seems like it would be perfect to pull around behind an RV
Maybe so! Lacks a bit of the Luxury’s of a US car, but it could do the trick for very short trips. I would be weary of laws crossing state lines though, may take some extra planning.

Great Video!! Are you a dealer in the US? Are you able to order Hijets and import to the US? I know they are conseidered off road only for import.

Thanks! I am not a dealer, just a fan but I put a link in the description. Best bet is Google for mini-truck dealers in your area, they’ll be best at keeping all the rules.
At a quick glance, it looks like it would make for a great little camper conversion, but as the presenter states, it is a little too short for an average adult to lay down inside.
For sure, very niche if someone wanted to have fun, but it’s no substitute for a full camper van if road worthiness and distance/comfort is the focus!
Does this model and the Toyota Pixis van have the same engine?
It should be just about a mirror image, at least on the standard, looks like you could get it with the 658 cc KF-VE I3 or
658 cc KF-DET I3-T engines, the second being turbo charged but only on international variants.
Would sell A BUNCH IN USA !! BET
Value is higher because of the difficulty to deal with laws, but with would sell well if restrictions were reduced, though when does the gov ever walk backwards on rules.
Do you have a link to the aftermarket wheels qnd suspension?
I don’t have a link to the shocks but the tires are ITP UltraCross R 23x8.00-12, an off road tire. Here is an Amazon Link: amzn.to/3RTeOSm or check out MotoSport’s website. The rims are ITP SS212: amzn.to/3RW5XPS
I want one lol
Haha they are out and about if you want to try and find one!
when you said "its turbo variant is not available for U.S. markets" K cars are legal now in U.S.?
Yes and no, this one can be imported for off-road use in many states, and then can get a plate for some road use but the turbo can not be imported in any way.
This thing needs a frunk for a little more fender bender crash space and storage.
They say they pass their crash test but I sure would not want to be in a crash in this!
I don't see any 4x4 on/off switch on the dash. Is it safe to assume this is actually only AWD and not 4WD?
Actually right above the shifter, to the left of the steering wheel is a toggle switch that says 4WD Lock and 4WD Auto, so it’s definitely more 4x4 than AWD.
Answered my own question after some research. It appears the van in the video is actually the Atrai Wagon model which only comes in full time AWD. The HiJet cargo is the model with true 50/50 selectable 4X4.
@@dune7824 yep! This is the Hijet Cargo with the toggle switch, you can see it on the dash at 12:00 below the hazard light button to the left of the steering wheel, just has some small text on it.
@@PhilipBlank Oh cool, I stand corrected. I see the switch now. Some of the models had a larger button that says 4WD so that's what I'd been looking for. Thanks for the reply and awesome content!

Not noticeably! The AC could easily overcome any heat on an incredible hot and humid day.
where you get the wheel from and rims thanks
The tires and rims are UTV tires from ITP and can be found at most off-road stores such as Motorsport.com. The tires are Ultra Cross R’s.
How did you get that in America? because it does not look like it’s 25 years old
This was imported new and is a brand new van, it’s classified as an off road vehicle, but in some states can be plated and used on-road. Restrictions still apply so it’s not a car.
Nice car. Whats the tire and mags size? How many inch is the lift
The tires are ITP 32 x 8.00-12, little bitty guys. The lift is about an inch.
I wish they would just give us a left side steering option.
Can confirm: the right hand is a blast, but an inconvenience in a drive through.

Kann man den auch in Deutschland kaufen?
I would imagine it would be similar rules to the rest of Europe, but I can’t say for sure sorry!
The nameplate lists this as a cargo van. Why are there rear seats?
Sometimes people might be your cargo! lol Really though, it’s handy having the bench to throw some extra people in, and it flips down flat to where you wouldn’t be impacted by them so I’m glad they have it for optional use.
@@PhilipBlank Understood and I agree. , Real utility then,

That’s a maybe. No because it is sold for off road use, but there are many states and counties that will allow it to be plated. In general though it’s not good to be state hoping unless you know the rules and polices of where you’re going, definitely not highway legal!

@@PhilipBlank OK thanks I once was a builder and I had a mini van called an Honda Acti. I loved it. Was good for my needs .very funky. This looks better
How is it legal to import before 25 years?
It is being imported under a different set of rules than the DOT’s DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which is the regulation setting the 25 year mark. This is being imported as equipment is the same class as say a tractor. It does not directly fit as a car and in many states can only be driven off road on your property. Some states/counties allow it to be registered as a mini-truck and then driven on the road or between two off road locations. Rules vary by state.
can i legally buy one and get it registered street legal in virginia??
I couldn't say as I do not know their laws, but these vans are intended for off-road use and I doubt they can be registered as fully street legal car.
the looks woulldn't be an issue for me but the very low horsepower would be a deal breaker.
it would not fare well in a crash either. time will tell. they laughed at the vw when they showed up here. the busses were very slow too.
Yup the power is nothing of significance for sure! But it’s a handy little get around machine for short range. No desire to see how it would do in a crash either!
Engine 0.660L?
Indeed! 3 Cylinder, .22L each totaling .66L
What about 4 x 4?
It’s got it!
Imo that thing looks like death trap
Hence the resistance for the DOT on importation haha. But it’s actually decent in crash test ratings and has airbags but in general this is not used on the road much.
10-15 seconds 0-60 is normal. Why do you need more? What are you speedy racer?
Haha most the cars I drive regularly are in the 3-5 second range so 10-15 is a bit more than that, but I agree it’s fine for this little machine!
No cup holders. Amazing.

Road legal in certain areas in certain states, not really a easy rule across the board. You can find any range of them from a few k up to a new one like this being $25k. All down to miles and year!

@@PhilipBlank the japanese web site indicates 80 tests including side collision test, rear-end collision test, hip point test, a pedestrian head protection performance test, pedestrian leg protection test, headlamp leveling test etc. details are terribly nonsensical such as misstatement of VIN number, falsification of test results and change of weight, mileage or number of tests etc (shrug).

How is this passing the 25 year rule?
The 25 year rule is coming from the DOT’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which is the regulation for importation of a motor vehicle, This is not being imported as a motor vehicle but as equipment or an off road vehicle like a Polaris Ranger. It does not directly fit as a car but in many states it can be registered as a mini-truck and then driven on road similar to a golf cart or side by side with lights and a plate. Rules vary by state and county so always do research on specifics for your area. The primary focus of this one is off road though.
