Creating a Hairstyle with Yeti Maya & Zbrush

  • How to create a hairstyle using the Yeti plugin for Maya & Zbrush FiberMesh.
    In the first part of the tutorial, I cover how to use Maya Curves with Yeti.
    The second part covers how to use FiberMesh and create custom brushes in Zbrush that works well with FiberMesh (IMHO).
    There is a 2 minute clip recorded with Zbrush Forward History where you can see all the creation of the hairstyle (hopefully less boring than seeing me doing it in real time for an hour).
    Then we export FiberMesh as curves to Maya.
    And in the third part I put it all together.
    Thank you!

    This is one of the best fibermesh control tuts I've seen. Thank you for sharing your process! Your fibermesh sculpt already looks great, even before exporting the guides. A very quick question- During your fibermesh sculpting sped up portion of the video, at some point you drastically reduce the length of the hair (around sideburns for example). How do you do this? Is this the smooth brush with preserve length turned off? Subed and liked :)

    • @filmanim5276
      @filmanim5276  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I used the move brush with preserve length turned off like I did here 18:50 and yes probably the smooth brush as well.

    • @DrZw0
      @DrZw0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for taking the time to answer. Again, great content and great sculpting skill. Fibermesh itself has great potential, people often get frustrated and give up/under estimate it. But it can give amazing results by itself if you are not going for a game model and have no restriction on geometry. It renders amazingly close to hair.

    • @filmanim5276
      @filmanim5276  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, I was thinking about your question and I noticed that there is a way to create this root position in the attribute node (Surf_P). This might be the beginning of something. I still don't know how to use this attribute to generate bump maps

    • @dowjones3035
      @dowjones3035 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      indeed surf_P is the attribute to use! However getting those world position values back into UV space and somehow be able to scatter white points proved to be almost impossible. What I ended up doing was scatter tiny spheres at the root of every fiber and then transfer the diffuse map of the spheres to the geo. This didn’t give me a “usable” map out of the box though. Maybe converting fibers to curves, curves to groom and then “export attribute to texture” from yeti groom would work? I’ll have to test that. Thanks so much🙏

    This tutorial is extremely helpful to a total beginner, I really learned a lot, so thank you for taking the time!
    However, I am having trouble with the Yeti hairs not attracting to the guide curve in the same fashion as yours. For example, when in the curve Yeti attributes, I need to make the Inner Radius and Outer Radius very small values (like 0.2, and 0.3) for the hairs to clump to the guide with Tip Attraction. Could this be an issue with world scale or model scale? In other Yeti attributes I must use very small or very large values as well (for example, I must set density multiplier to 50+). Any thoughts? Thank you :)

Just select this node and from the Hypershade hover your mouse over the shader, right click and “assign material to viewport selection”. Unfortunately I don't have a Vray licence right now to help you further. Good luck!

      I'm not sure but it seems like some of
      your guides are floating above your mesh, and that might be a
      problem. So you could make your mesh live, then select all of your
      curves and in the select menu, use “First CV”, then you can use
      the scale tool slightly to slide those Cvs on the surface.
