Man… I haven’t seen the full ending of Isaac in quite a while.
I started to tear up a bit I mean… Edmund has outright said Isaac is canonically dead, so, if this is the true canon ending, it’s happy in a sad way.
It’s like this entire game is Isaac stuck in an endless loop throughout purgatory after his passing, but his father joining him is what allows him to finally ascend upwards for once instead of constantly going downwards.
And then he gets a happy retelling of his life to put him to sleep one last time. Right in the feels.
would be a better ending then "odd bedtime story"
To be fair, I feel like this is one of those cases where the text of the game contradicts the Word of God sufficiently that you can arguably pull a "Death of the Author" card, because, sequentially, all the endings that allude to Isaacs death, etc. ultimately reach... This ending. This, of a note, is relevant as the ending sequence, in order, mostly does build towards "Less Isaac's fantasy and more true" as you start to see less visions and more, like, his mother putting up missing persons posters, etc. as it goes. Granted, in that sense this ending does contradict, uh... One of them? Potentially? But it's quite established most of them don't entirely reflect reality anyway so what can you do?
Anywho, you go through all of that, and then you reach this ending which says that Isaac is a creative kid who has been making up all this terrible stuff to deal with, to contextualize the traumatic stuff that's happened in his family, who feels so guilty about it, like it's somehow his fault, that he can see no repentance for what he perceives himself to have done except to die. But that he now has someone in his life to tell him that that isn't true. Which is sort of the other thing that makes this feel like it has to more reflect "real" events than the others. As we know from The Ascent, Isaac's father abruptly left their lives as his mother descended into very extreme fundamentalism.
In all other endings, his father is just... Gone, there is no comforting male voice in his life. This isn't an experience he has to draw from, it wasn't how his life was. With this context, the only way for this to make sense is if it's a... New event, something happening in his actual present, because it's something that's absent from his past, it's not something he'd reasonably be expected to imagine or make up (I mean, we've seen the sort of stuff he makes up, yeah? =P).
And, to the comment above, I don't really see how "It's a dying vision" is any better or worse, insofar as the "truth" of a story, than any other form of "it's a metaphor/story/dream." Why does Isaac need to specifically be *dying* for this to have impact as a way he's dealing with what happened to his family.

I suck so bad... 4 years on and off and I can barely beat a run... I love watching your show, it keeps me going... it is very rare that I suck so bad at a game that it affects my experience, so thank you retromation for being the wind beneath my wings to keep dying and dying and dying!!!! Love this series, keep it Going!!!!
Genuinely one of the best showings of your skill in the Dogma + Beast fights, damn. Essentially sight-reading the bosses on a run that isn't completely broken like most runs that make it there (I genuinely didn't recognise some of those attacks because of how rarely the fight lasts that long) and winning was incredibly impressive, and I was genuinely on the edge of my seat.
The Beast has less telefrag you attacks than it looks on first glance, but you have to know them more in advance - she always shows up in the lava before she jumps up, but there's not a super long delay between her appearance and the attack, so you need to know to watch out for it and then to hang out in the middle of the screen so you have time to get out of the way. I actually think the Beast fight is one of the most genuine skill-based fights in the game, once you recognise most of her attacks (I think a lot of the Repentance content is fantastic in that regard, actually - Mother is like my favourite fight in the game) but it takes a few attempts to get the patterns down

Holy hannah. Haven't seen 'this' side of Isaac content before. Way to clutch it out at the end.
I am 100% with you the dogma fight is so cool! But the beast fight really showed your skill at this game, i never lived long enough to see some of those attacks, because I only made it that far with very overpowered builds, but you managed to do it with just a "good" build. Hats off to you
I definitely never saw a lot of this content back when it came out. So glad I’m seeing it with this new series

increased planetarium on floor 3 was from 8 Ball
So after seeing a few other runs from other creators, I'm apricating this series even more. It is insane how much more there is to unlock. I feel so lost trying to understand half the things that were happening.

I would have liked to try that one. I have no idea that was the book of virtue effect with placebo. Also also you asked what you should do.. yesterday? Day before maybe. I forgot to comment but I still want to see you do onan’s streak. I’m not sure what it adds, just a rune I think so no trash for the pool.

Wholesome fact for the day: Rhinoceros have the personality of a Labrador, so much so that handlers need to be careful they aren’t crushed when a rhino rolls over for belly rubs
I just beat the devil in the FIRST binding of isaac the other day, I was not expecting the game to turn into a flying bullet hell.

From what I can tell there seems to be equal positive/negative pills in the pool everytime but not necessarily the +/- of the same type every time. Still dont know if it's accurate but that's the best of my knowledge.

You talked in a recent video about not liking choosing meta currency vs current power. Question to pose to you then. Is that not what choosing to spend coin money in Isaac on the machine vs buying things in the shop pans out to being since its debating working towards a meta unlock vs buying power?
Yeah, and I hate it. The donation machine / greed machines are probably one of the worst designed things in the game to me. Alleviated slightly by the ability to bomb the machines, but barely. The game would be improved by their removal.

Sadly this is not the canonical ending.
Nah it is.
It’s just the interpretation of the ending is usually incorrect. I think people assume it to mean that Isaac didn’t die and his story changed, but I don’t think that’s the case.
My interpretation of this ending is that Isaac has been trapped in an endless dream cycle forever and ever after his death. He’s been in purgatory unable to move on because he’s trapped by his emotions.
My interpretation is that his father couldn’t handle the guilt of leaving his son to die, and.. well.. he joins him. Repentance is his father guiding him back up through everything to give him a final bedtime story so they can pass on together. Instead of Isaac traveling down deeper and deeper, his father’s note is what starts his ascendance.
It’s still a sad ending, but I think it’s the appropriate ending.
