Don’t be in a rush to get married. If you want country, you have to hear George Strait. He is called the king of country. Start with “The Chair”. He has 61 #1 hits which is more than any person or band in any music category.

Keith died very young, around 32,I believe, from alcohol poisoning… gone much too soon. Another song of his you might like by him is “Don’t Close Your Eyes”. Country music tells great stories. They sure can get to you.

The live version is even better. He said it was the most beautiful song he'd ever recorded. His second number 1 hit but sadly he was gone within the year, he had 3 more number 1's after his death. I love the duet with his wife Lori Morgan "When a tear becomes a rose"

I'm a southern Belle from Alabama and singer and musician. And of course I grew up on country music and I'm an 80s baby and personally most people from my generation who grew up in the 90s will tell you that the 1990s was one of the best last decades.
We had the best music and best movies and so mamy legendary country singers and pop and rock bands.
But country music has alot of heart. We live in God's country so when we run unto strangers and strike up a conversation, it's quite common to find out the stranger your talking to is also a Christian.
I love that about the south. Being around of God fearing and loving friendly down to earth people.
And country music has alot of gears and also circles around Christianity as well pretty often.
Alot of the legendary singers who had long careers were indeed Christians like Reba McEntire, Brooks and Dunn, Vince Gill, Randy Travis and Garth Brooks etc. The list goes on.
I could definitely educate you on alot of country music.
And although I have an appreciation for older country from before my time, I often listen to the 90s music for many different genres because that was such an awesome decade. Now the early 2000s had alot of great country music and rock and pop as well. And I've been to tons of concerts and met alot of celebrities in person, bands from different Genres, and it was truly some of the best times of my life.
And it's wonderful to see younger people reacting to music that came out when I was a kid or teen. Or even older music before my time that I listened to also as a kid and loved.
There is alot of great talented country singers out there.
    I love older country.
I'm not as huge of fan of country pop or today's country.
But I do like Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton and several others who are singing today.
But older 80s and 90s country is my fav. Then 60s and early 2000s country.
But yeah if you have an email to send requests to you.
I would gladly educate on some country music for you to react too. Point you in the right direction. Since I'm a bonifide country girl myself and know my country music very well.
But here is some info about Keith and his beloved wife Lorrie for you to check out.
Keith Whitley and Lorrie Morgan were a country music power couple in the late ’80s.
The two were married in 1986, until Keith’s tragic passing in 1989 from alcohol poisoning at the young age of 34.
Though Lorrie was initially warned about Keith’s alcohol problems by his manager, Don Light, she hoped against her better judgement that her love for him would be enough to help him overcome his struggles:
“I thought as much as I loved Keith, surely that would help him. I feel in my own heart I kept Keith alive a lot longer because I was there all the time. I put everything on the back burner, including my career, to help Keith.
I never, never expected anything as bad as Keith had it. I thought it would just take love and someone to help him to get through with it.
He wanted it that way. But something inside of him wouldn’t let him. It literally was like he had cancer and could not control.”
She always knew in the back of her mind that he was “a ticking time bomb”, and she lived in constant fear that something bad would happen to him:
“Every time the phone would ring it was in the back of my mind that there was somebody calling to tell me he’s been in a wreck or died of alcohol.
It was a living hell. I was on pins and needles when he was on the road. We had six great months of nothing but pure ecstasy. It was a heavenly marriage and home.”
On May 9th, 1989, the day he passed away, he had taken Lorrie to the airport to see her off on a promotional trip to Alaska. He gave her a hand-written letter before he left her there, which was not all that uncommon or out of character for him.
What he wrote to her, though, was almost like a farewell note.
When she read it again on the way home, in retrospect, she felt like he was trying to tell her something.
And it’s the most beautifully heartbreaking thing you might ever read:
“Would you like to know what I wish for you? If I could have any wish I wanted, this is my wish:
That in your life which is so precious to me, may worries, troubles and problems never linger. May they only make you that much stronger and able and wise.
May you rise each day with sunlight in your heart, success in your path, answers to your prayers, and that smile that I always love to see in your eyes. I love you, Keith.”
Okay, I’m gonna go cry for the rest of the day now…
And if you really wanna get in your feelings, check her out singing his stunning hit “Don’t Close Your Eyes” not too long after he passed away.
Written by Bob McDill, Keith released it as the third single from his album of the same name in 1988, and it peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

I'm a classic rock guy generally, but I can appreciate good music of any genre.
I like this original version, but I love the version by Alison Krauss & Union Station(1995). Alison has the most pure voice, and the guys of Union Station(blue grass band) are top-tier musicians and vocalists. Ronan Keating is an irish singer who released his version of it in 1999 - a hit in the UK. When I was on vacation in Belfast last year, I went to a traditional Irish pub and was very surprised when the folk band there performed this and everyone in the place knew it and sang along (at the time I was not familiar with Ronan's version). I was thinking: "How do they know this - not many in the US even know it". A few days later everyone at a pub in Dublin knew it also. Certain country songs have become an iconic part of Irish traditional music (e.g. by John Devner, Johnny Cash).
Check out John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads".

This man was everything to me. He died my senior year of high school, a month before graduation. I had already been working in country radio for a year at that point. Keith's first public performance was at age 4 in 1958. At age 15, he was playing with Dr. Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys playing bluegrass. Within a couple years, Keith became his lead vocalist. By age 20 in 1978 moved on to a lead vocalist gig with J.D. Crowe till 1982. Keith's first solo country album on RCA came out in 1985. He was my generation's Hank Sr.

My absolute favorite is Home Free. They are a country acapella band (no instruments) but they do other genres also. A good one to start with is Dive Bar Saints (original music) or Man of Constant Sorrow. They have a huge following on You Tube so it will get you a lot of new subscribers. They do everything from ballads to some pretty hilarious covers. I really love them because they’re just a group of really great family guys doing what they love. Good clean fun and incredible music. I’ve been to two of their concerts and will go again as soon as they come to my area. I’m following you and can’t wait to see your reaction to them. Be prepared to go down a rabbit hole. Love this reaction too!

Check out Ashley McBryde. She’s one of the new breed of country artist. Excellent songwriter and storyteller. She can do old school country as well as rockin’ country. She has an absolute stellar sense of humor. She rocks the tats which causes some to not listen or like her.

Doug, there is a lot of great country music out there and it's hard to know where to start when trying to suggest something for you to listen to next. I'm going to go with a song by Vince Gill called When I Call Your Narme. Yes, it's a hearbreak song but he sings with the voice of an angel. I think you'll enjoy it.
