Listen to Keith sing "Don't Close Your Eyes" from this same show and you'll be amazed even further. No telling how big he would've been if he'd lived. Probably the best pure voice to come along in country music in the last 40-50 years.

I was fortunate enough to see Keith play live in the fall of 1988. My favorite song of his is "I'm No Stranger to the Rain."
"I'm No Stranger..." is my favorite Whitley song, too. Great metaphor and clever wordplay and rhymes. "It's hard to keep believin', I'll even come out even."

I saw Lori Morgan in concert a short few years after he passed. She was equally a talented singer..... I couldn't stop thinking as I watched her how painful a loss it must have been for her to lose him. She put on a great show, very strong vocals. She and Keith were so good together.... 🌟
I remember when this song came out; the words so beautiful, great song then as it still is today. Amazing the restraint by his bandmates so we can listen to Keith sing and not have his voice overpowered by their instruments. What a skill that's got to be. Rest in peace Keith ♥️

I love Alison’s version of this song but, for me, Keith’s version is the definitive version for my life. Alison’s is absolutely beautiful but Keith’s gives me goosebumps.
I love Keith’s Kentucky accent.
When Keith name checks the songwriters, Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet, and says that he was giving a couple of unknown songwriters a break--in case anyone doesn't know--he's kidding around, because Schlitz wrote one of the biggest country hits of all time in the '70s--Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." And just a couple of years earlier, Schlitz and Overstreet had co-written the country song of the year for 1986, Randy Travis' "Forever and Ever Amen."
This song is the result of songwriting genius. Yes I think he was joking with his comment on giving them a break.
You can see a bit of a smirk when he says it. Don and Paul have many many songs to there credit, and did at that time already. The audience knew it as well.
Schlitz and Overstreet were monster songwriters, a Nashville audience would certainly have gotten the joke.
My favorite (hard to pick one), is "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". I am a huge and lifelong Keith fan. But I really want to thank you for your remarkable love and passion for breaking down music in so many genre's. You are amazing and so insightful. Thanks so much. I love your videos.

I was just discovering country music around 1987 and Keith's music was the reason for that. It was devastating to all of country music when he died back then and even worse for those of us who see him as the reason we discovered country. I have all his music on CDs and still to this day I never get tired of listening to him. He would have reached the heights of Jones, Haggard, Gosdin, etc. I'm still waiting for someone with the same/similar voice to hit country music. Likely not in my lifetime.
Loved this. My favorite Keith Whitley song is "I'm Over You." Nice fiddle, steel, and piano. Of course great vocals. I hadn't listened to that song in years. Brings back nice memories.

Not that it really matters but this performance is actually from his appearance on Austin City Limits. Keith also was a great bluegrass musician that started playing as a teen with the legend Ralph Stanley. Shame he had such a alcohol problem that killed him so young. ✌🇨🇦

Keith Whitley was one of my favorite Country Music Singer and had all his songs he ever put out. He is still missed to this day. I remember where I was at the time when he past away. My Wife, girlfriend at the time we were together when her sister came home and told us he had died. Thank you Fil for doing Keith Whitley, God Bless. Good piece. I didn't see it live. Keith Whitley wasn't just in bluegrass. He and Rickey Skaggs toured with the Stanley Brothers when they were teenagers. Ralph Stanley said he was the best interpreter of Carter Stanley songs and could handle the band's unique high baritone harmony. He also played with the innovative J.D. Crowe and the New South (Rickey Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, J.D. Crowe) blue grass group. He was a great country singer heavily influenced by Carter Stanley and Lefty Frizzell. (Listen to Keith and Lefty's versions of I Never Go Around Mirrors.) His career in country was short due to alcoholism. I think it was the 1989 Country Music Awards Show dedicated a significant portion of the show to Keith and to address discussing alcoholism.
Please do more songs like this and write and perform a similar old country song of your own for us loyal fans who have been by your side since the beginning! Keep it up Fil your the best ! :) 💯

Beautiful love song. Keith always brings a smile to my face, and a tear to my eye. He expressed honest emotion that one could see and feel. A rare feat for many, but that which can break ones heart. Keith singing with (to) Lorrie was beautiful, but sadly Keith could not defeat his darkness....even tho he expressed it with music.
Keith was born and raised about 10 minutes from my farm in Sandy Hook, Ky. His family are great people and were crushed with the news of his passing. Keith had so many great songs, even better When you say nothing at all. He died of Alcohol poison and was doing cocaine on the night of his death.

One of my favorite songs to sing. Even though I can sing it in Keith's register, I actually prefer to sing it using the Allison Krauss version which I believe has a slightly quicker tempo (in the recording). I'd be really interested in hearing the UK cover version you mentioned. BTW, I really enjoy your videos and how you explain things. I can't read or play a lick of music, but I like to sing.

Great job Fil I watch a lot of your analysis videos and always learn things. This song really defines the word subtle and you bring out so many facets of that. I have been trying to do this song on acoustic and vocals for a long time and just couldn't seem to get it, but your comments and demonstrations on guitar gave me some really good ideas.

The first time I heard this song, Billy Bob Thornton had been up to Philadelphia Mississippi to visit Marty Stuart when he got back he had a demo of this song on a cassette tape. He borrowed a portable panisonic cassette player from his high-school library. At Thomas Jefferson Academy. This was around 1972. I thought he was going to wear the cassette out.

His voice was untouchable
Keith knew about 'dynamics' which is very important in good country music plus he had a new and better producer Garth Fundis at the time. Garth said he rarely had to do anything. On his last album most of his vocal tracks was first take, I think Garth said the most tracks he did vocally was 3 takes. No I was not on this show cause i'd taken a year off in the summer of 88 for personal reasons. I was to join back up in June of 89. You couldn't call Keith a perfecionist,,he was just that good always. hardest thing I ever did was went to his funeral. Thank you for spotlighting Keith. By the way,,he's in the Country Music Hall of Fame now. Long time coming.

Keith was going to perform in my hometown of Victoria, Texas but the show was canceled because of his death just a couple of days earlier. Was so pumped about seeing him, but that didn't come to pass.

I just love Keith Whitley. I also just love that the two (two?) guitars worlds can co co-exist. I can keep myself very interested at this level but it is not for everyone. I just mentioned to one of our FB supporters about the upstroke, and now Fil mentions it. Thanks Fil.
My cousin played Guitar (the other Acoustic Guitarist) in this band and video. That's him to Keith's right. He also taught me how to play this song on Guitar. He (my cousin)also played little short runs (single picked notes) also in unison with the piano licks under the dobro. Its little more complicated, than your showing here but not much.

Hey there! Love this. One correction, Carson Chamberlan who mostly plays Steel Guiter, is playing an instrument invented by Steel Guitarist Paul Franklin's Father, and it's called a Pedobro. Basically, a pedal Dobro. I worked for Keith, and can tell you that there's no Steel Guitar in this song. Love your review!

He died of alcohol poisoning in 1989. I'll always remember because I was pregnant with my youngest daughter. Heard it on the radio & everything just stopped. Very emotional.

Wings of Pegasus analyzing Keith Whitley? Oh yes now we're gettin' somewhere! My all time favorite singer with a golden voice that is unmatched! This was a fantastic performance Keith Whitley had on the infamous Austin City Limits, the Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble show from 1983 was the first time I've seen the Austin City Limits stage, countless bands and artists have been playing there for decades to this very day and both Keith and SRV's music have been a massive impact on my life for as long as I can remember and left way too soon, I don't know the man I would be today if I hadn't heard or grew up with their music. The best live performance of this song I heard from Keith was the Ralph Emery show where he was playing his first two #1 hit songs that same year and it's also on TH-cam, this is my favorite video I've seen from you yet.
PHIL! Keith is from my tiny little hometown of Sandy Hook in Elliott County Kentucky. When I say tiny, I truly mean that! I know a lot of his family and went to school with his cousins!
He originally started out in Bluegrass music. He and Ricky Skaggs(who's from the next county over) got their start with Bill Monroe and Dr. Ralph Stanley.
His accent is definitely familiar as a Elliott County accent!
My parents ran a country store and his mom would visit the store several times a week. One his brothers was killed in a motorcycle accident. Another brother is still singing.

Excellent points about the band's role. Also, I noticed that Keith got so much range while hardly seeming to move his head. Your point about his microphone proximity explains much. Keith came out of Blue Grass and much of the discipline is there, but I am still glad he went Country.

Great analysis video on Keith Whitley. I can only guess that the reason Keith has a "Modified" G chord and "Barred" A chord is probably learned from his Bluegrass days with Ralph Stanley and Ricky Skaggs. The tempo is lightening fast on alot of those songs. Even just playing rhythm you would have to be quick on the change while playing Bluegrass. Alot of "Boom Chuck" (Bass/Strum-Bass/Strum) That sounds like a good Analysis video to do. The Bluegrass Boom Chuck.
If you really want to hear a master class in country Honky-tonk music please go listen to Keith’s final album “I wonder do you think of me” his vocals on songs like “Talk to me Texas” “Between an old memory and me” and also “Tennessee courage” and “ Turn this thing around” The nuances in his vocals with that album is superb. Keith is so missed. They called him the Kentucky bluebird for a reason. Thank you so much for covering Keith.🎶
