Vince Gill's Go Rest High On That Mountain started out being written about Keith Whitley when he passed (you were no stranger to the rain), but was finished when Vince's brother passed.
I was going to say that’s part of the reason his name was so memorable because it was all over the comments section of Vince’s Go Rest High On That Mountain ❤️
I would say the "you weren't afraid to face the devil" line was a reference to this song too, given that this song has the line, "I fought with the devil, got down on his level."
Whitley didn't hang around to become a superstar - alcohol poisoning got him at the age of 34. Watching the news of his death, Waylon Jennings said to a friend, "Hoss, that was the greatest country singer ever." How's that for an endorsement?
Coming from Waylon Jennings, yeah, that's one helluva endorsement. Reminds me of Hendrix talking about Terry Kath. "Yeah, he's better than me." I mean, I think those are strong parallels. - Keith
I remember the night he died. I had screwed around and ended up having to take a night class to graduate high school. Mom picked me up after class and this was playing on the radio when I got in the car. After the song played the DJ said that he had died. I will admit I cried all the way home. When you consider how he died the lines in this song "But when I get that foggy feeling, When I'm feeling down, If I don't keep my head up, I may drown" is really haunting.
This is the gentleman that Vince Gill wrote Go Rest High On That Mountain about. This has been my favorite song since I first heard in in my pre teens. Has been my life’s theme song from 30 to now 42.
He was one of the greatest vocalist if not the best. He was married to Lorrie Morgan. His son Jesse Keith Whitley is also a singer. I remember when he died it was one of the saddest days in country music. His voice resonates with a lot of country music fans. Don't Close Your Eyes is one of his best.
In my opinion, the greatest country artist of all-time. In the 3 years he made it big then passed away was the best 3 years anybody has ever had. If he had lived, we’d be mentioning him with Strait as the best.
You guys reacted to Vince Gill's "Go Rest High on That Mountain". The last line in the first verse of that song is 'You were no stranger to the rain". Vince originally started writing that song about Keith Whitney's death... he finished the song a couple years later when his older brother died (which inspired the second verse). In regards to Keith's guitar face, he was a gifted guitar player. He and Ricky Skaggs were both in Ralph Stanley's band as teens in the mid-70's.
Such a great talent gone to soon. He had a great voice and so many great songs but didn't live long enough to see them make it as big as they are. He died in 1989 of alcohol poison at the age of 34. He actually thought he wasn't good enough. And he before he died he recorded with just a tape recorder and his guitar a song called "Tell Lorrie I love her" and if you listen close you can hear the tv in the background cause his daughter was watching tv while he recorded it. The song was talking about Lorrie Morgan cause they were married at the time he passed away.
Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High” was written in part, for Keith Whitley. First verse for Keith includes “You were no stranger to the rain”. Most believe Keith had a short career but, Keith actually started traveling with bands in his teens as a musician. In his biography Keith talks about his painful stage-fright and, being exposed to adult contents that made him uncomfortable and loneliness thus, he started drinking. In his short recording career … Keith left a forever stamp! The lyrics of No Stranger is his story.
As usual this was a great reaction Keith Whitley was one hell of a singer. Unfortunately he went away all too soon. He passed in 1989 I think of alcohol poisoning. While he was in his thirties.
Have you heard "Go Rest High on that Mountain" by Vince Gill? He started writing that song for Keith Whitley after he passed, but didn't finish it until a few years later when his own brother passed. The first verse in that song directly references this song. "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain."
Love Keith Whitley. I know some of best songs, imo, have been mentioned but one I haven’t seen in the comments is Miami My Amy! You can’t go wrong with any of his songs!
After Keith Whitley died they found a song he recorded in his bathroom a few days before. It was to his wife, fellow country music artist Lorrie Morgan. Its haunting. Its called Tell Lorrie I love her.
In the bathroom a few days before? How does anyone know that? I always heard that no one knows exactly when it was recorded. Plus you can hear the TV in the background. I doubt you'd be able to hear the TV while in a bathroom playing and singing. Lol
Keith Whitley’s Tell Lorre I love her and don’t close your eyes are 2 of my favorites!!! His son Jesse sings tell Lorre I love her and sounds like his daddy! RIP KEITH!!!!
That last sentence is a terrible lie. Lol I watched the video of his son singing it to her and couldn't keep myself from cringing. He didn't inherit an ounce of singing talent from his dad or his mom.. People who say otherwise are only doing so out of their sentimental feelings for Keith. This comment is blunt, but it's the truth.
Vince Gill wrote the iconic “Go Rest High on that Mountain “ in honor of KW, his brother in music, and his own biological sibling. This song is referenced in VG’s song. A potential superstar lost too soon.
I knew Keith Whitley before he was country. Wish I could post the album cover of him when he was with Ralph Stanley and the Stanley Brothers. Keith Whitley was a Bluegrasser before he was discovered.
Glad yall liked this one, Keith Whitley was a great country artist back when country was all country, loved listening to him. He has several other wonderful songs like Don't Close Your Eyes and When You Say Nothing At All.
No, he would've been one if he'd had stopped with the alchohol. His albums had multiple songs top the charts, so your comment doesn't hold considering those two things.
Keith Whitley had a smooth classic country voice. He died way too young but he left a good catalog of country songs . The death of Keith Whitley was the reason Vince Gill started riding the song Go Rest High On That Mountain. He even makes reference to this song in the lyrics when he says you were no stranger to the rain. Vince didn't finish that song for several years until the death of his brother. Hopefully you'll look for other Keith Whitley songs to react to.
I think he only had 4 country albums some of my favorite songs of his are kentucky bluebird , tennessee courage, when you say nothing at all, homecomig 63 and dontnclose your eyes
In the words of Morgan Wallen’s ‘Keith Whitley’, “Things I love gotta way of gettin’ gone too soon, kinda like good whiskey, Keith Whitley and you.” Gone much too soon. R.I.P. Keith 💔🪽♥️
Keith Whitley is top 5 of the best voices ever in Country. Y'all should listen to him singing Revelation or Long Black Limousine. They are acoustic demos but vocals are chilling
Keith's "Don't close Your Eyes" was literally a singing in the shower song for me. Great voice. Didn't know he picked that well. Beautiful wife. Everything to live for. Damned shame.
Y'all talking about the Jamming Face reminded me of my sister. She is an excellent Classical Pianist but growing up we teased her and the faces she made when she was really concentrating on a difficult piece. She would scrounc up her nose and kinda chew her tongue. She had to work hard not to make as many funny faces! Me on the other hand, I had to remember to not be a robot and actually show some emotion while playing. Maybe that's why I was so terrible and could never seem to pick up playing the piano. I got a good musical foundation, but I've always struggled with playing instruments.
Kind of ironic. A bourbon reaction channel listens to Keith he was on his way to country super stardom when he died from alcohol poisoning drinking bourbon. He would have been bigger than George Strait.(Was well on his way). Try “Tell Lori I Love her” written right before he died and an eerie sound to it like he knew what was coming. Love your guys channel.
His last show or one of his last shows was at The Armadillo dance hall in Brazoria Tx! The story goes that the owner would cook for the entertainers! They had BbQ the band came to eat but he never did. The word is he was drinking a lot, but I heard he still put on a good show! I never did go to the Armadillo, but a few times. To big for my liking! The dude could sing, and write some good songs! You should check out Lori Morgan.
Keith Whitley died in 1989 at the age of 34 his wife is a country music female powerhouse named Lorrie Morgan one of Lorrie Morgan's biggest hits is called something in Red
If you do Don’t Close your eyes you have to do Keith first then watch the duet where they mashed up his and Alison Kraus’ cover of it. I like Keith’s better than hers but I do really like the mash up.
A song you have done, Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill, has a reference to this and other songs by Whitley. Vince wrote the first verse after Keith died at 33 from alcohol poisoning. He later wrote the 2nd verse when his brother died.
Love Keith Whitley! I believe you have done Alison Kraus's cover of Keith's When you Say Nothing at All. Another singer songwriter you might enjoy is Avi Kaplan, all of his music has a positive vibe to it, it is all extremely personal to him yet relatable to all. If you can't fit him in to react to do yourselves a favor and listen. I would start with When I'm a Fool Live at Sunset Sound.
There are only three other singer/songwriters that are on par with Keith, those are Merle Haggard, Don Williams and Tom T. Hall. Those four are the mount rushmore of country singer/songwriters.
Happy New Year BCR! For your information I sent two different requests over to Vine & Table. Hoping you get the message as well. We'll see soon enough guys. Hope things work out! The Amelas One Millinocket, ME

I've heard this song so many times but I don't think I ever really listened to it. It's wonderful.
Keith Whitley was amazing. Gone too soon. RIP.
I remember the night he died. I had screwed around and ended up having to take a night class to graduate high school. Keith had one of the best and most recognized voices in country music
In my opinion, the greatest country artist of all-time. In the 3 years he made it big then passed away was the best 3 years anybody has ever had. If he had lived, we’d be mentioning him with Strait as the best.

Such amazing talent destroyed by alcoholism!! RIP Keith!!❤❤
After Keith Whitley died they found a song he recorded in his bathroom a few days before. It was to his wife, fellow country music artist Lorrie Morgan. Its haunting. Its called Tell Lorrie I love her.

I always heard that no one knows exactly when it was recorded. Plus you can hear the TV in the background. I doubt you'd be able to hear the TV while in a bathroom playing and singing. Lol
@Gutslinger the story I heard is when he was working on a new song, he would sit in the bathroom because it had better acoustics.
Tell Lorrie I love her is my favorite Keith song. Just because of the feelings that you feel just listening to it 😊
Keith Whitley’s Tell Lorre I love her and don’t close your eyes are 2 of my favorites!!! His son Jesse sings tell Lorre I love her and sounds like his daddy!

The song was easy listening, pleasant in a word.

I’m over you, tell lorrie I love her, love from 10 feet away. Really any of his songs. Can’t go wrong with my fellow Kentucky boy!
The man had an amazing talent. Another gone way too soon. I love his voice. I can only imagine what he would have done if he'd had more time.
Vince Gill's 'Go Rest High on That Mountain ' is a tribute to Keith Whitley. Even makes a reference to this song.

You got the wrong song. You're thinking of "When You Say Nothing at All".
Yes, lost Keith about 35 years ago. It's great to see that his music lives on. Drank himself to death at 34 years old. What a shame!
A song you have done, Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill, has a reference to this and other songs by Whitley. Vince wrote the first verse after Keith died at 33 from alcohol poisoning. He later wrote the 2nd verse when his brother died.
Plus, he married country singer, Lorie Morgan! (SOMETHING IN RED). What a beautiful woman?
I don't know any of her music, but I do remember she was quite the smoke show back in the day. - Keith
Love Keith Whitley! I believe you have done Alison Kraus's cover of Keith's When you Say Nothing at All. Keith Whitley's widow is Lori Morgan you should react to something in Red
man I love that Barrel top in the background!!!!!!
It's darned nice, isn't it?
Keith Whitley left this earth way to soon. You need to check out his son Jessie Keith Whitley he sounds so much like his dad
There are only three other singer/songwriters that are on par with Keith, those are Merle Haggard, Don Williams and Tom T. Hall. Those four are the mount rushmore of country singer/songwriters.
If there was a Mt Rushmore of country, Keith would be one of the faces
Had he lived he would have been the next voice of country music, the next Jones. Still so sad. Dammit
Can't afford to send a bottle. Ashley McBryde Light on in the Kitchen the official music video is a good one
Happy New Year BCR!
For your information I sent two different requests over to Vine & Table. Hoping you get the message as well. We'll see soon enough guys. Hope things work out!

I'll try to head over there today and pick those up. - Keith
Keith Whitley died one month before Garth Brooks released his first album. I wonder if Garth would have been so big if Keith hadn't died
You they say George Strait wouldn't even be the king of country music if Keith Whitley hadn't died.
Have y'all reacted to each states' bourbon? Or the ones that have bourbons
P.S. I have no idea how many states even have distilleries.
So, you’re saying it’s basically the same theme as “Tomorrow”, the big song from “Annie”? 😊
Please check out Chris Melanson from Canada the song is Room's For Rent it is the best REAL country song I have heard in a long time it was released in September 2022 ,
Please react to Sturgill Simpson. I suggest Call To Arms or You Can Have The Crown.
Like Hank Sr., gone too soon
Gone too soon passe away in 89
I think the subtle music helps draw attention to Keith’s voice and supports it, as opposed to being a star of the show.
Hi
Keith Whitley has a great voice and some really great songs, but when I hear him, all I feel is sad. Alcohol got him, and he left his wife and kids behind. And all the songs he could have done. It's just super sad.
He overdosed on alcohol binge the husband of Lori Morgan you might want to check out tell Lori I love her
Poor Keith Whitley, drank himself into the ground way too young.
Keith has been dead since 1989. He was 34.
Another Kentucky boy gone all to soon. You should listen to Hard Liven and then When you say nothing at all.
