Merphy, I know you're worried about moving onto the main points of a whole section but in all transparent honesty, all of us are here to listen to the "little things/details" that you felt impacted YOU. Your perspective is already such a different conception of the story we love, so we want you to feel the utmost of freedom to fully express those things.
Will add that if you follow the Op community the “takes” are done and over done to death so the fresh theories and ideAs from a new perspective is priceless. Even if already proven wrong, still provides context for the story we may have never gotten.
Agreed. It's refreshing to see a perspective from someone who is going through the story as blind as possible. Over the years the community has homogenized in a lot of ways in terms of where we expect the story to go or what kinds of things we look for (or overlook) in the details. Even though she often has theories I know are wrong it still often makes me rethink things, plus some of them are surprisingly similar to a lot of the fanbase too.
I love the Oda writing effect that he can't even do a small gag with an octopus without the community freaking out and wondering if this is a one off gag, or actually Oct D Puss, a man who sailed on Gol D. Rogers crew
It's his fault! Usopp tells a tall tale of a giant goldfish that eats islands, and whose poop can be confused for an island, it appears at the end of Little Garden. Sanji calls himself Mr. Prince because he is simping after Princess Vivi, you thought? Probably, but he's also the freaking 3rd Prince of the Germa Kingdom! Sanji's drawn wanted poster was a nice gag... Well, no... Duvall is a thing. Remember that gag character on one of the first SBSs that Oda created as an excuse for a door that got magically fixed in the next panel? Minatomo. That surely was just a joke. Until you arrive in Wano and see Franosuke working under his twin brother! With that rep-sheet, if you ask me, Oct D Puss was Roger's strongest and most loyal crewmate! This insane man doesn't even allow you to trust in jokes!
@@Ali-sh5sx thats weird just to think about 🤣 Watching Daniel play D&D with Tekking over at Rustage's chanel is already such a weird crossover event hahaha
Hi Merphy! Congrats on making it to Wano! Idk if you noticed but Tama, the little girl, taught Ace how to weave a hat. This is how Ace was able to make a similar hat for Little Oars Jr., the ancient giant of WB’s fleet. He was so happy with that hat too. RIP Oars Jr. EDIT For people asking if Oars really is dead: We have not heard from him since Marineford and the OP wiki says his status is currently “Unknown”. I’m counting him as dead for now. But you know, it’s Oda so he might still be alive.
Status say “Unknown” on the wiki page so I assume he’s gone. Him being alive would severly undercut the powers of thw WG in the war. It was a noble way to go out, tbh. But that’s just what I like to believe.
If you're worried about getting into all the "little things", don't. You're dealing with One Piece fans here. We love it. That's what we're here for, Merphy :)
PLEASE continue discussing details and specific scenes from the chapters you've read. We totally understand if you have to do it without showing panels; but hearing you point out and discuss specific details makes me remember these moments from the story and see them in a new light from your perspective, and is one of my favorite things about your reviews.
Agreed, that is what got me listening to these. The reactions to things, big or small, bringing back memories of similar reactions when first reading them. I sit there with a goofy grin the whole time listening.
When she said “Luffy was thrown into the shore and it suddenly became quiet.” That’s how alive the manga is by how Oda draws. You see color and hear sounds.
Merphy, one of the scenes that shook me the most in Wano was in Chapter 918. In that double spread (page 15, i think) where Luffy arrives in Okobore town, just before that a woman was about to murder her child because she didn't have any food to feed the kid. She's stopped at the last moment when Luffy brings food for the whole town.
This. Every time I think about Wano I just remember that scene with the grandma almost comitting suicide and that mother almost killing her child. Just shook me so much.
I've mention it in a previous comment but I'll say it again : Wano is filled with Japanese myths/legends, historical and cultural references. If something seems a bit too crazy for you, these three stories might provide you with some answers : - The Tale of Momotaro - The legend of Susanoo and Amaterasu - The Seven Samurais by Kurosawa (1954) (There's more of course, but I don't want to spoil anything)
Also interesting how Oda has split Momotaro into 2 seperate characters in Wano edit: in case someone want to read a summary of the tale -> According to the present form of the tale (dating to the Edo period), Momotarō came to Earth inside a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there. The woman and her husband discovered the child when they tried to open the peach to eat it. The child explained that he had been sent by Heaven to be their son. The couple named him Momotarō, from momo (peach) and tarō (eldest son in the family). Years later, *Momotarō left* his parents *to fight* a band of marauding *oni (demons or ogres) on a distant island.* En route, *Momotarō met and befriended a talking dog, monkey and pheasant by feeding them dango* _[anyone who is caught up will know who the first 2 are],_ who agreed to help him in his quest. At the island, Momotarō and his animal friends penetrated the demons' fort and beat the band of demons into surrendering. *Momotarō and his new friends returned home with the demons' plundered treasure and the demon chief as a captive.* Momotarō and his family lived comfortably from then on.
He also brings 3 animal including a monkey to fight the oni. oh yes the dog too its probably spoinlers whoitis thou. i think the peasent was already ther too.
Please don't stop making specific references to small moments you loved! 🥰 Trust me, we won't need to see the panel to know what you're talking about. I love how in-depth your reviews always are, it's my favourite thing about them! Panels or no panels, please don't change that! :D
@@furorteutonicus9045 he wanted to do it earlier then that. He put it off initially to not step on the toes of Naruto. He ended up putting it a lot further back then he anticipated considering this story is longer than anticipated as well.
@@furorteutonicus9045 Oda has planned Wano from the start of the series with Zoro's Backstory in Shimotsuki village (the only Japanese sounding and looking town in One Piece till we got to Wano)
@@dohtje5029 I would not go THAT far. This also can be something Oda came up with later and tied it in with the early chapters. We should not forget that Oda initially thought One Piece would only go on for about 5 years.
Luffy: Watch out--I’m good at sumo!! (Sumo wannabe pirate, Luffy-no-umi, record: undefeated vs. Usopp) Comedy in Wano is so good! I just really love little details Oda causally put in like this
Kinemon's way of talking and his way of being shocked by nami 's clothes is not due to the time travel but just the fact that wano is closed to the rest of the world
More Cowbell! Lol I really want funny titles for the timestamps. Which gives info about what's going on but also insight into your psyche lol. Idk I really enjoy the timestamps on Critical role.
I started reading OP because of Merphy's reviews and this is the first review of hers that I'm actually further ahead in my reading that she is. I think I started reading OP when she was in Impel Down so I've had to catch up but now I'm actually in Act 3 of Wano and I can't wait to hear he thoughts on it.
@@rinkusan978 I was gonna keep it brief but I ended up writing a lot so I hope that's OK. The tl;dr is that it's not my first time reading manga but I was still not prepared for the absolute massive (both length wise and emotional) journey it has been reading OP and I'm so happy I did it. I've read/am reading Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Haikyuu. While I'm not completely a newbie to manga/anime like Merphy, I feel like compared to most OP fans I'd be considered a "normie" as I've only read/watched less than 30 series. As for my experience reading OP, I'll be honest, I was not expecting I'd love it this much as I had kinda assumed people were exaggerating how good it was. I feel like that may have been because the only side of the fandom I had seen were the toxic fans who would belittle you for saying that you enjoyed X or Y series so that definitely added to the hesitancy to start the series earlier. I was also hesitant initially because of the time commitment I thought it would take to catch up (I think it took me less than 4 months and I actually just caught up to the manga as of 10mins ago!) and I was unsure if I would enjoy what I had assumed to be a very light hearted series (boy was I wrong lol). Despite how most of the anime I've watched fall under Shonen or Seinnen, I actually don't really care for fighting aspects of them, so I was also worried that OP would only be about these big battles (again I was so wrong about that as there is such a perfect balance of battles with quiet moments that give the battles so much more meaning). That's why I started listening to Merphy's reviews as I figured if someone who had very little experience with the medium and genre could still enjoy it then I'd have no excuse to try it for myself. I was watching her videos until Thriller Bark before I decided to stop watching until I could read them for myself first and I think she had just posted Impel Down when I started reading it from the beginning. So I knew a lot of spoilers but I think it helped me reframe my mindset going into the series. Anyway that's probably way more than you wanted to know so sorry about that. I still can't believe that I've actually caught up and will now have to suffer weekly. The only thing keeping me sane now is the fact that I got my sister into OP too as so we're watching the anime together so now I get to experience the story all over again!
7:50 Did you recognize Franky's boss? This Minatomo is the brother of a joke character Oda created way back in the East Blue, on the SBS of volume 7, when someone pointed out an error he made in Romance Dawn with Makino's bar door being magically repaired from one panel to the next one. And since SBSs are not a thing in the anime, they included him in Loguetown and in the following filler arc 12:04 Tama being able to feed Kibi Dango (dumplings) to the animals to befriend them comes from the Legend of Momotaro, a Japanese folk tale. There's a million parallels and references between Momotaro and One Piece, ever since Long Ring Long Land, so I recommend you reading it 20:50 This sword was explained in Loguetown, when Zoro got his own cursed blade, in case you want to go to fish for the reference 23:03 The O at the beginning of names (female) or titles (family) is an honorific to add a level of respect. For example, the word meaning "mother" is "ka", so to address your own mother you can say "ka-san" (Mom) or "oka-san" (Mother). AFAIK, it's really rarely used in names anymore, but it was a thing in feudal Japan, so most females you meet in this arc will get that extra O at the beginning. So Tama = Otama, Kiku (tall samurai girl) = Okiku, Robi (the name Robin took as cover) = Orobi, etc. (Edit, thanks to the replies elaborating on this: Names longer than 2 syllables get shortened to 2 syllables, so Kikunojo becomes Okiku and Robin (3 syllables in Japanese, Ro-bi-n) becomes Orobi) 27:10 Don't worry, One Piece is NOT the standard. As with any other medium, you also have the pathetic of "say don't show", say it out of the blue when it's relevant and not one second before, with nothing pointing that direction, and have a spectator character narrating everything that's going on (Brock in Pokémon anime, for example) so that the idiot reader understands what's happening and so that it makes sense because it wouldn't otherwise. Of course, I'm describing the opposite extreme here, but only to give you the full spectrum. Manga is just the medium, you can expect the same from it as from any other one. Great authors, like Oda, making everything matter and match together seamlessly and cohesively, and mediocre authors that do the opposite
Well, thats why Oda set his goal to make One Piece the next hallmark of what manga can be And I must say, he succeeded, it became one of the manga insudtry titans, and at least in Light Novels more than anime and manga, many of the ones after One Piece are adapting Oda foreshadowing style, and many of them do become highly regarded
Want to point out that you're wrong about the sword. He got the sword from the legendary Samurai Ryuma in Thriller Bark. It was supposedly buried with him. Hence why Kinemom kept calling Zoro a graverobber.
Speaking in regards to the shonen genre of manga: the answer is yes - Eiichiro Oda is just that much better than the vast majority of authors. Especially in terms of the believably-delivered exposition you mentioned, which I've never seen any other shonen author do so well so consistently.
i can personally put him upper, to replace "shonen" to "manga", even to the best ones on "fiction, fantasy". Eeeasily, and i have loved and love loot of fiction but.. one piece is not just the level we are talking about, im also including the level of enterteinment and learning we can have reading lot of new stuff EVERY WEEK (almost)
Personally I absolutely love Merphy Narrating specific scenes in her very expressive way. She says it’s recent in our minds but Wano has been going on for almost 4 years at this point and is so densely packed with information that it’s easy to forget the small moments. Merphy has an incredible understanding of what Oda tries to convey with each panel and often points out things I might have missed or interpreted differently. It feels so refreshing to hear her take on every detail of this story and her descriptions are so vivid that I don’t really need so see the page she’s talking about to picture it in my mind. I would gladly listen to her describe every 20’000 pages of this manga.
The choice of having the early chapters just be about Luffy and Zoro was great. For the readers who were caught up before Whole Cake Island (I'm old so I've been caught up since Thriller Bark), we hadn't seen Zoro for TWO ENTIRE YEARS or something like that.
Zoro and Sanji didn't interact with each other since the early part of Dressrosa till Wano act 2. It was a good solid 5 years till they called each other Teme (Bastard) again.
I loved that throughout the entire series thus far no one has defeated Luffy in one punch (that I remember) and we all go in thinking that fight with Kaido is going to be insane and Luffy goes all out and its AMAZING and then Kaido just one shots. And when I tell you my jaw and heart dropped because I genuinely had no idea what Luffy was going to do. I mean he barely got through that fight with Katakuri so I cannot wait for Merphy to catch up and see just the master of story telling SOMEHOW make everything work and always go up another notch of intensity.
@@migglejoe1008 i don't think so man, big mom didn't knock out luffy, luffy got carried by sanji cause of luffy's still tired after all those fights and he is running out of haki, not because he got punched by big mom.

When you first talked about Kinemon talking and acting old fashioned, that just made me appreciate Oda's writing. The anility to drop hints like that, but still have no one (although there was someone who theorized there had been time travel before it was revealed) is amazing
well, but kinemons behaviour isnt really because of timetravel, more the fact that wano in its isolated state never progressed from the edo period. Their traditions and manners are just not in contrast to the rest of the world. you could argue, that the most progressive thing, are weapon factories at the moment there. thats why devilfruits are seen as magic and witchery, while in fact they are just a part of the world but just here they are not.
@@rawrproductions5963 its possible thats what Oda intended, but the fact that when she read it and had an inkling how he acted was due to some kind of time situation is very interesting
@@rawrproductions5963 i think his way of talking is interesting foreshadowing, for whatever Oda intended to do, the point was to realize the he isn’t from the modern world
One thing I adore about Wano is that the 'seedy underground' we usually expect is instead blatantly out in the open while the good guys and search for justice is the underground element. Wano is broken with little hope for revival precisely because of how apparent the corruption is. Risk it all to care or become despondent are the average persons only options in this country.
The first two acts of Wano are pretty short but act three is longer and still ongoing so you can divide act three into two or three videos since a lot of stuff happens in that act. Also, the One Piece community is divided into those who read the official translated releases on the Shonen Jump/Viz Media/Mangaplus app/website on Sundays around 10 or 11 a.m. and those who read the fan translated scans on pirate manga websites on Fridays. As someone who reads the official scans I have to usually avoid social media from Fridays until Sundays since some people post panels on Twitter or discuss spoilers as well as TH-cam since some manga and One Piece TH-camrs have spoilers in their titles and thumbnails when discussing the current chapters. So if you're following anyone especially on TH-cam (since I know you don't use much social media) who reads the OP manga becareful of some of them since they might spoil things for you.
Definitely do the flashback as its own video then the fire festival as the final video of the series... maybe split it into pre roofpiece and post roofpiece
also there is the spoiler reading group on like wednesday so there‘s spoilers wednesday fan translations friday official translation sunday i‘m in the friday group
Samurai abide to a very strict code called bushido and in that the hunger thing is mentioned. It is a disgrace to feel hungry. So it's not because Wano is a wasteland and they are used to being hungry, it's their code, their way of life. Even if Wano was a very prosperous nation they would still be living by that code
Tama taught Ace how to make hats, and he made a huge one for Oars Jr. Just a small link demonstrating how this little girl had an impact in Marineford!
Yeah, regarding the whole time travel deal, I believe Oda added a specific "rule" to it so it doesn't make the concept needlessly convoluted. I think he understands how time travel can negatively impact a story, so he created a counter measure for that. We'll see if it works or not, but I trust him. 👍
@@wiselettuce8715 not really , alot of scientist believe you can go backwards , but the cost of fuel to do that is equivalent of a star energy which no way near possible to do it curently or even in near future , but time travel to future is quite possible with with less power or just being in space , the astronout basically time travel 1 mili second into the future just being in space for a full year
@@wiselettuce8715 no, you can go back in time (well, not physically, but you can see back in time) if you travel faster than light, events happened here can be seen. Just like how we see dead stars still shining through the night
In regards to Zoro's swords, Zoro has the Sandai Kitetsu (3rd generation Kitetsu) and the sword Luffy had was the Nidai Kitetsu (2nd generation) which is 2 grades higher in quality than the Sandai. It's the same grade as Zoro's other swords Shusui (the black blade) and Wado Ichimonji (Kuina's sword) we haven't yet seen the Shodai Kitetsu which is one of the highest grade swords, the same as Hawkeye's sword. I'm pretty sure the only time these swords were talked about was all the back in Loguetown when he got the sword.
The thing i love about act 1 of Wano is how luffy grows as a person. We see luffy as a little brother all the time, now it's time that he plays the 'big brother' part to tama at the least
She has arrived in Wano finally It's crazy to think She started her journey And caught up And we are all still in Wano. Imo what makes this arc special The anime extends a lot of the content and improves on it And while I dont expect her to watch every ep of the Wano arc People should list key episodes for her to watch
This includes her re-reading the beginning through the sky island saga and her adoption. If you include all of that, the speed at which she's catching up to us is astonishing
@@Ali-sh5sx She's gonna be like, "Why did I catch up so quickly?!?" That's definitely what I was thinking when I first started One Piece. I started when there was around 300 episodes, maybe less, of the anime (I started with the anime, then took a break when I caught up, then switched to the manga because of the atrocious pacing of the anime) and thought there was no way I would catch up so quickly. I think I caught up to the anime with the episode where Garp visits Luffy at Water 7 several months after I started watching OP.
I completely get the trepidation about time travel, a very hard concept to write well. I'm a little less worried though because up until this point in the story the time-related power has only been shown to send people FORWARD in time and not back. I feel like a lot of the less palatable time shenanigans tend to involve traveling to the past, not the future.
I love that you're actually talking about 909. Its such a perfect start to Wano, and its about Pops! That panel of Marco holding back tears talking about how much of a cheapskate Whitebeard was, is just so perfect. I feel like Oda has likely lost some people close to him, because it feels so insanely true to life. And chapter 920 is nuts too. Oda is essentially calling his shot here.
12:51 Outside of the story, the real world inspiration for the samurai not feeling hunger comes from the teachings of Bushido. Summed up in an unsourced quote found online: "when the stomach is empty, it is a disgrace to feel hunger." I believe the origin of that tenet stems from the absolute dedication a samurai would have towards their lord, for to obey one's body is to serve another master, and disloyalty is one of the greatest "sins" of Bushido. That's how this American has come to understand it through manga/anime, at any rate.
Yup. Because of the early chapter release (of 1036) that usually happens around Christmas/New Years and a following WSJ break, the next chapter is not 14 but 18 days later now😭 At least now it's only a week left until ch.1037, early spoilers for it are out & most importantly, Mercy dropped a new video🥳
@@asap4bri Well, it will be worth the wait at least. I heard 1037 is huge and is already trending on twitter in France after the spoilers came out (which i did not read of course but the hype is still there :) ).
I think its worth seeing some of the scenes here in Wano Arc in the anime. The visuals and OST is just great and some scenes actually add more to what the manga has shown. Wano is a very fun arc and I can't wait to see your reviews on the other parts!
Yay you’re finally in Wano! Don’t worry about the panels just hearing you gush about the scenes is enough for us :) Love how much you love Oda’s writing style hearing you talk about much you can tell he love’s his own series is always fun to hear from new readers!
Don’t get overwhelmed by the whole Time Traveling aspect Merph, but believe in Oda and keep reading. He’ll explain a little bit more in later chapters on how things work
Just wanted to say that the chapter where zoro and luffy reunited was one of the most wholesome things every. For the weekly readers at the time, we havent actaully seen zoro for 2 YEARS real time so that moment was so precious😭
It's completely fine to have no panels up, don't worry about it. The "currently discussing" panel really works well - and the jokes you put into it were hilarious ;)
just be wary of the comments. Never extend the responses to a comment and overall, be cautious with people trying to explain stuff. There is a guy somewhere in the comment section who spoiler some big character moments and how some stuff that will be explained after Act 1 works. It's always a gamble
Its cool. Spoilers dont bother me a whole lot. I tend to stay away ftom them but if i happen to find out its not that bad. Im still gonna go through and see for myself 😊 everyones experience is different i figure
Merphy: you should upload all the audio of your one piece episodes to SPOTIFY!!! I'm one of those people who's been using your videos as podcasts and probably went through all of them at least twice just looking at it a couple times for reference or to have a better look at your reaction. So I think it'd work as a spotify podcast
Congrats Merphy you've reached the current arc! It's sad when catch up with One Piece but now gives freedom to interact with whole fan community not worrying about spoilers.
I love that you have noticed how direct and purposeful Luffy is with combat. He is not academically intelligent, but I've always said Luffy is a tactical genius.
@@merienda4958 A great example is the difference between a Tactical Victory and a Strategic Victory. Say for example that Allies want to bait the Axis into a fight to drain their resources. The outcome is immaterial to the Allies, they just want the Axis to waste time on a fight in one location to get an advantage elsewhere. Then the Axis takes the bait but the Commander of that Battalion is brilliant and makes a landslide victory, they win the fight with minimal losses and take the territory. Meanwhile the Allies are able to accomplish their other goals having successfully drawn their attention. This would be a Tactical victory for the Axis, but a Strategic Victory for the Allies. TL;DR Tactical is small picture, Strategic is big picture.
This format you're trying is just fine Merphy. There are issues with paneling for a lot of TH-camrs but I think they aren't too necessary for your videos. You always go into so much detail about everything that I can remember the pages clearly, I love it!! But your pointers to the pages being referenced is a good touch, and I found your back and forth with the page numbers when you couldn't decide which topic to talk about first was hilarious. Keep it up Merphy, you're doing great 😉
I just recently found this channel about a month ago and I just CANT CANT wait for her to catch up to all things Wano. Merphy made me love One piece more than I already did
The reunion of Luffy and Zoro was so amazing, because at that point in the manga it had been a couple or few years since we've them together like this. Also, the anime during this arc is absolutely amazing. There are a few slow and annoying moments in the first act, but all together the anime has been the best it's ever been and, at times, better than the manga...which is something I never thought I hear myself say lol.
Facts. People should finally respect that and accept that One Piece is in the same league as Berserk and other masterpieces. Just because its a shounen aimed at teenagers does not mean it can not be an outstanding work of fiction. It angers me greatly that there are still many people out there who try their best to downplay One Piece just because its not primarly aimed at adults.
Honestly even without the panels just how invested you are into the series makes one can easily remember and imagine the panel. Thank you for the reviews. Wishing you a happy new years for you are you family. 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
Finally here!!! Congrats!! BTW, when Luffy kept saying "verily" and weird words to emphasise stuff, he's saying "guzaru". He did it as a way to "blend in" with the samurai folk. Because samurai say "guzaru" at the end of sentences to emphasise a point or something but Luffy, of course, gets drunk with it and puts it everywhere inappropriately. It was more clear in the anime.
20:26 The sword Luffy has is from Kitestu Set, there are 3 Kitestu Swords, Zoro has Sandai Kitestu (3rd Kitestu) & Luffy is holding Nidai Kitestu (2nd Kitestu) There is also a Shodai Kitestu (1st Kitestu) which is not revealed yet but many in fandom believe it is with Samurai Gandhi of Gorosei (One of the 5 elders of WG who look like Gandhi)
I'm rereading wano with you because there's just so much even in the opening part it's crazy 😧 I still can't believe how good oda is at managing all the threads of this story he must have flow charts to keep it straight
Thank you so much Merphy, I've received some pretty bad news today, but seeing you so enthusiastic and passionate is really welcome today. I love your videos and I'm always looking forward for the next. Thanks for doing such a great job at consistently putting a smile on my face
When it comes to manga as a whole, One Piece is seen by most as a kind of pinnacle when it comes to specifically; worldbuilding and characters. Even by people that don't read/follow the story.
Merphy you dont understand just how amazing it felt for us week to week readers to see Luffy and Zoro reunite, i remember legit getting goosebumps when I was reading that chapter.
So glad you've reached Wano and you like it. It's genuinely my favourite arc so far and it's cool to hear more thoughts about it. The small details are what's best to get into I think. Deep diving and talking about this fantastic story is great fun.
Oda has been excited about this arc since way back. He has been excited to draw this arc like this is the arc where it really gets intense and the story of the series will get more interesting, more lore and more backstory Wano started with a banger. Act 1 is amazing 🔥😎👌 Oda stated that his favorite moment was the start of Wano arc
Having no panels is fine, but please don't feel pressured to keep your videos concise. The fact that you discuss the little details and go on rants about your favorite moments is a big part of why I enjoy your reviews!
We all got nervous when time travel was introduced, but believe me, Oda knows how to handle time travel in the best way: by furiously putting limitations on it.
I'm watching the anime and the Wano arc is so intense. One Piece had built itself up to be an amazing story and there's still so much more. One Piece is a different animal
I really enjoyed the way this was done. I liked the ramblings about events and how they were impactful, all the call backs being noticed, all of the predictions and guesses, and insight on themes and plots. I don't mind the panels being missing, I really like the chapter and page being notated I'm going to go back and re experience a couple of those.
The Sunny reaching Wano is amazing in the anime!! People who only read the manga should definitely watch this scene even if only for how the music blends in with the animation and panels. A really wonderful introduction to the arc! PS: Should also consider listening to the anime's soundtrack. Totally amazing 🧡
Agreed on this. The "welcome to Wano" sequence along with the act transitions are fantastic in the anime and worth watching on their own. I'd also add Kaido's arrival with the ominous music as the storm approaches and then he drops through the clouds as Luffy is stunned into asking "wtf is that" and Law replying that it's Kaido.
The intense and important scenes for wano are some of the best to come out of the anime in years! I really enjoyed them. The only issue I have is how much what goes on in between can drag, if they don't do anything interesting with it, and it's just reaction shots and drawn out struggles that weren't in the manga, coz in the manga they were quicker and didn't have at least 30 seconds of the characters just flailing their arms around in order to not fall over as the crowd reacts.
@@bethanybrookes8479 Some of the padding in action scenes I'm all for it. Sanji vs King was pretty quick in the manga, but in the anime they made longer and more interesting
Merph I absolutely love these videos. I’m excited for the closer analysis when you ultimately catch up. If you decide that you would like to perhaps read another Manga, my personal recommendation is Kentaro Miura’s Berserk (R.I.P). This story is extremely dark and deals with very heavy themes, however it has some of the most human characters I’ve ever seen in all of literature. The way he depicts the struggle of living and working through trauma from the past is something truly special. On top of that his artwork is absolutely gorgeous.
Miura's the GOAT and I would adore this. Unfortunately she's picked up the first volume in the past (black swordsman arc) and dropped it due to a content warning from one of her friends. She said while she's heard great things, the story containing depections of sexual assault makes it not for her.
Loved this video. So happy you're here. It's so bittersweet though, because I know this means less One Piece Content from you soon 💔. But I'm very excited to be able to talk theories with you! And maybe do more deep dive discussions on characters and moments from the series 😄. (Whatever you think is best/have the most interest in doing) Selfish request though: I would still love it if you had an episode talking about or ranking the One Piece Openings. I know of course you can't play them, but I think a discussion would be very fun.
Merph happy to see how far you've come in the story. You're almost one of use you just need to see the words all one piece fans dread. Break next week.......
It’s a mixture of happiness that he’s taking breaks but sadness because how can you have such an awesome last scene and then tell someone to wait two weeks!
27:30 About this, saying Oda is the best Mangaka isn't something that everybody is going to say, so we have to see it as an opinion, in my opinion it is, to meeeee it is... I don't know how many mangas i've already finished, but One Piece is the only one that makes me feel "in love"
@@DharcVasquez yep Kentaro Miura was artistically better by FAR. While I like One Piece better and understand that the plot is superior I can’t in my right mind say that it’s better than Berserk or not yet at least. But with Utasawa he’s been lacking since Asadora! imo
@@7a81chanel7 he drew more detailed pictures but i dont think his layouts and blocking are as good as Oda's, and i dont like berserk's story as much. i feel like other artists are great at specific things but only Oda is the goat at like, every aspect of story and art together
20:35 the guy Luffy got the sword from is a famous sword smith. Who’s named Kitetsu. Zoro has sandi ( grand ) keitestu. The sword luffy has is the nidai ( great grade )keitestu.
I think discussing the details won't be that big of a deal regarding copyright etc., the real problem seems to the showing of panels or anime scenes/screenshots. Really sad that creators get limited that way especially because I love your reviews were structured
God and the anime has put so much more love and care into this arc than they have for awhile. I’ve been consistently freaking out every week for awhile now with how incredible the animation has been, even for the littler things!
It is all going to be better each chapter from now on^^ Just to clarify what I think was a misunderstood point, Zoro did not KNOW that the sword Luffy was using to be some great sword or something. He just felt it.
I think it’s unprecedented in all fiction that 1000 chapters and 20 years into something the writer is coming up with what could arguably be their best stuff. Wano has been unreal so far.
Catching up to One Piece is a feeling you can't get in many other places these days, once you're totally up to the week-week schedule you'll be able to just deep dive into the theories and fanbase without worrying about spoilers because... we would all be at the same place! 😂
Too bad it doesn't end there with spoilers coming out 1 week and scans 2 days prior to the official release. And seemingly everyone in the community is fine with that so it's hard to discuss new chapters without getting spoiled.
@@see_yl the creator community is pretty good about not talking about that stuff for 'just long enough for the unofficial scans too come out. Not saying it's not still an identifiable issue, just saying that participating in this community is pretty easy if you ignore rant comments

Congratulations on making it to Wano Arc! We'll definitely miss your Arc Reviews once you caught up but also looking forward to your in-depth Chapter Reviews moving forward.
Instead of using panels, would fanart be an option? I think since you're mostly caught up + have a supportive Discord channel, fanart seems viable as long as you credit the artists. That would be a great substitute
Hey Merphy, so Kaido has a number of facets to his drinking issues. Firstly, I think we can establish that his habit of drinking like a fish is no secret to the rest of his crew given that he has been constantly drinking in the majority of the scenes we've seen him in; not to mention rank and file crewmates have commented on his drinking habits and how frequently he is drunk. I think the tone of Jack/Tom's comment of asking if he was drunk was more apprehension than surprise. He was probably worried that Kaido would accidently destroy parts of their territory on a whim (kind of in the same way Big Mom did during her hunger pangs) and Kaido did end up doing just that when he fired his lazer at the castle that the Strawhats were hiding in the moment Hawkins mentioned it. That said, I think you are onto something in that Kaido does not simply drink because he likes drinking. Remember when Kaido was first introduced after Dressrosa, instead of introducing him by his epithet of the strongest living creature, he was introduced as the man looking for a place to die. They listed all the losses he had suffered in his career as a pirate and about how he had lost many crewmates over the course of that time and Kaido himself lamented that he had not yet managed to die like Whitebeard had. So I think it's safe to say that Kaido is seriously struggling with some very severe depression issues and suicidal tendencies. I would even suggest that this war that he wants to ignite is merely another attempt at trying to find a way to die as well. Either way, at this point in the story, we do not know any more core reasons for his drinking habits beyond what they told us in his introduction. Looking forward to your next video!
I realize that you probably have even less time than before but honestly, even just the Luffy and Zoro begining in the anime is FANTASTIC!! The voice actors are amazing the score is great and wano is the most beautiful arc to date
So with wano, it just keeps getting better and better and better and you think it can't possibly get any better but oda has a perfect chapter after another and being so consistent. I'm excited for you this arc is such a ride and it's so awesome!!
When you catch up on One Piece, the next manga you should read is Bakuman. In short, it's a manga about making manga. In long, it delves into the various stages of the writing process, from coming up with an idea all the way to dealing with editors and publishers and fans. It's amazing and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
You absolutely HAVE to see Luffy and Zoro reuniting in the anime, it’s so great and really captures the feeling Oda was trying to portray, just pure joy out of seeing one of your best friends after a long time!
Agreed
Will add that if you follow the Op community the “takes” are done and over done to death so the fresh theories and ideAs from a new perspective is priceless. Even if already proven wrong, still provides context for the story we may have never gotten.
I would watch her videos even if 3hrs long.
@@AeneasSaturn I wish her vídeos had all 3hrs long hehe
I love the Oda writing effect that he can't even do a small gag with an octopus without the community freaking out and wondering if this is a one off gag, or actually Oct D Puss, a man who sailed on Gol D. Rogers crew
Oct D Puss is amazing lol

EDIT
For people asking if Oars really is dead:
We have not heard from him since Marineford and the OP wiki says his status is currently “Unknown”. I’m counting him as dead for now. But you know, it’s Oda so he might still be alive.
Little oars jr is still alive?
@@handle0158 not confirmed but probably
Status say “Unknown” on the wiki page so I assume he’s gone. Him being alive would severly undercut the powers of thw WG in the war. It was a noble way to go out, tbh. But that’s just what I like to believe.
I loved reading that scene. These little details are gold!
Do we not find this out in later chapters?
If you're worried about getting into all the "little things", don't. You're dealing with One Piece fans here. We love it. That's what we're here for, Merphy :)
PLEASE continue discussing details and specific scenes from the chapters you've read. We totally understand if you have to do it without showing panels; but hearing you point out and discuss specific details makes me remember these moments from the story and see them in a new light from your perspective, and is one of my favorite things about your reviews.
100% agreed. The things that excite her the most and get her attention are the highlights of her videos
Agreed, that is what got me listening to these. The reactions to things, big or small, bringing back memories of similar reactions when first reading them.

Keep in mind that Toki's fruit only allows to travel forward in time, so it doesn't involve any paradox or plot holes
When she said “Luffy was thrown into the shore and it suddenly became quiet.” That’s how alive the manga is by how Oda draws. You see color and hear sounds.
true, i prefer the manga sound design over the anime
Merphy, one of the scenes that shook me the most in Wano was in Chapter 918. In that double spread (page 15, i think) where Luffy arrives in Okobore town, just before that a woman was about to murder her child because she didn't have any food to feed the kid. She's stopped at the last moment when Luffy brings food for the whole town.
Crazy…
Yes that panel was unsettling in the realist way possible I'll probably never forget it.
This. Every time I think about Wano I just remember that scene with the grandma almost comitting suicide and that mother almost killing her child. Just shook me so much.
I've mention it in a previous comment but I'll say it again :
Wano is filled with Japanese myths/legends, historical and cultural references.
If something seems a bit too crazy for you, these three stories might provide you with some answers :
- The Tale of Momotaro
- The legend of Susanoo and Amaterasu
- The Seven Samurais by Kurosawa (1954)
(There's more of course, but I don't want to spoil anything)
Also interesting how Oda has split Momotaro into 2 seperate characters in Wano
edit: in case someone want to read a summary of the tale ->
According to the present form of the tale (dating to the Edo period), Momotarō came to Earth inside a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there.

It was specifically mentioned in Marineford, that Ace learned how to make that strawhat for him in Wano.

The woman, the myth, the legend, Merphy Napier is in Wano. We did it boys, we did it.
Woop woop
I started reading OP because of Merphy's reviews and this is the first review of hers that I'm actually further ahead in my reading that she is. I think I started reading OP when she was in Impel Down so I've had to catch up but now I'm actually in Act 3 of Wano and I can't wait to hear he thoughts on it.
Act 3 has been one hell of a ride.
Oooh i want your review tooa
been a long ride
Was this your first full consumption of manga? How was it? If you may answer that in a short sentence.
And since SBSs are not a thing in the anime, they included him in Loguetown and in the following filler arc
12:04 Tama being able to feed Kibi Dango (dumplings) to the animals to befriend them comes from the Legend of Momotaro, a Japanese folk tale. There's a million parallels and references between Momotaro and One Piece, ever since Long Ring Long Land, so I recommend you reading it
20:50 This sword was explained in Loguetown, when Zoro got his own cursed blade, in case you want to go to fish for the reference
23:03 The O at the beginning of names (female) or titles (family) is an honorific to add a level of respect.
(Edit, thanks to the replies elaborating on this: Names longer than 2 syllables get shortened to 2 syllables, so Kikunojo becomes Okiku and Robin (3 syllables in Japanese, Ro-bi-n) becomes Orobi)
27:10 Don't worry, One Piece is NOT the standard.
Pokémon adventures manga slaps.
Damn...thanks dude since the runtime of the vid is suprisingly short. So thanks again.
No one is reading that
Well, thats why Oda set his goal to make One Piece the next hallmark of what manga can be
And I must say, he succeeded, it became one of the manga insudtry titans, and at least in Light Novels more than anime and manga, many of the ones after One Piece are adapting Oda foreshadowing style, and many of them do become highly regarded
Yep Oda is on another level, at least in my opinion. Even death in One Piece has some sort of consistency.
He likes Toilkein so of course his world building and story telling would at least be Toilkein Level

When you first talked about Kinemon talking and acting old fashioned, that just made me appreciate Oda's writing. The anility to drop hints like that, but still have no one (although there was someone who theorized there had been time travel before it was revealed) is amazing

It's so refreshing to view Wano as a whole arc and not by just a single chapter every week, great review!
So if you're following anyone especially on TH-cam (since I know you don't use much social media) who reads the OP manga becareful of some of them since they might spoil things for you.

can anyone please share links on where to read it? the anime is what got me hooked but now that i've reached wano i want to switch to the manga
It's not just a made up rule. It's the only theory about time travel that is acceptable in real life.
Rule is you cannot go back in time only forward.
Oda made sure time travel is to only go forward. If she can go back from the past, then we'll gonna have One Piece multiverse.
Thanks for the info mate
I thought Luffy had Shusui as his katana
The thing i love about act 1 of Wano is how luffy grows as a person. We see luffy as a little brother all the time, now it's time that he plays the 'big brother' part to tama at the least
42:20 I also loved the alternative translation: What kind of a king did you say you want to be...brat?
She has arrived in Wano finally
It's crazy to think
She started her journey
And caught up
And we are all still in Wano.
Imo what makes this arc special
The anime extends a lot of the content and improves on it
And while I dont expect her to watch every ep of the Wano arc
People should list key episodes for her to watch
Crazy right? ☺️
This includes her re-reading the beginning through the sky island saga and her adoption. If you include all of that, the speed at which she's catching up to us is astonishing
@@ilsukdyang8134 cant wait for her to experience
"One piece break weeks" >:)
@@Ali-sh5sx
She's gonna be like, "Why did I catch up so quickly?!?" That's definitely what I was thinking when I first started One Piece.
982 and that other one she absolutely needs to watch. And we are not only in the same arc but also in the same act lol
The Luffy/Zorro reunion scene is genuinely one of my favorite scenes in OP. Just genuine love and excitement between two friends, so good.
12:51
Outside of the story, the real world inspiration for the samurai not feeling hunger comes from the teachings of Bushido. Summed up in an unsourced quote found online: "when the stomach is empty, it is a disgrace to feel hunger."
I believe the origin of that tenet stems from the absolute dedication a samurai would have towards their lord, for to obey one's body is to serve another master, and disloyalty is one of the greatest "sins" of Bushido.
That's how this American has come to understand it through manga/anime, at any rate.
The coincidence considering the latest chapter lmao

Just when you are feeling down that One piece is on break, in comes Merphy with another One Piece review.
Yup. Because of the early chapter release (of 1036) that usually happens around Christmas/New Years and a following WSJ break, the next chapter is not 14 but 18 days later now😭
At least now it's only a week left until ch.1037, early spoilers for it are out & most importantly, Mercy dropped a new video🥳

Don’t worry about the panels just hearing you gush about the scenes is enough for us :)
Love how much you love Oda’s writing style hearing you talk about much you can tell he love’s his own series is always fun to hear from new readers!
Don’t get overwhelmed by the whole Time Traveling aspect Merph, but believe in Oda and keep reading. He’ll explain a little bit more in later chapters on how things work
Basically, trust Oda, he knows what he is doing.
I finished wano part 1 this morning. Found this channel just now. I didnt know i needed a place to gush with others until just now.
You lucky bastard😂....
Thanks 😁
just be wary of the comments.
Yah and/or apple/google podcast platforms
Same lol.
Congrats Merphy you've reached the current arc! It's sad when catch up with One Piece but now gives freedom to interact with whole fan community not worrying about spoilers.
I loooooove your pfp
I love that you have noticed how direct and purposeful Luffy is with combat. He is not academically intelligent, but I've always said Luffy is a tactical genius.
and before people try arguing, tactical and strategic are different things!
@@Felipera_ how are they different?
TL;DR Tactical is small picture, Strategic is big picture.
i don't think luffy ever had academics
@@sheepboy2560 gee I mean it’s like he was raised by mountain bandits or something.
Looking back it's crazy you started One Piece when Wano was still in act 3....and still is
I think Act 3 by itself is gonna be larger than most arcs, plus there is so much content within it.
Keep it up Merphy, you're doing great 😉
YOOOOOOOO! It’s time for Wano!

982 was the last good ep

The reason one piece is at 1036 chapters and going (with no end in sight), is simple. ODA IS A GENIUS. He Created a masterpiece
Keep talking in details and referencing the page numbers as u did ! its an awesome way to go with having 2 screens is such a win 😉
20:26 The sword Luffy has is from Kitestu Set, there are 3 Kitestu Swords, Zoro has Sandai Kitestu (3rd Kitestu) & Luffy is holding Nidai Kitestu (2nd Kitestu)
There is also a Shodai Kitestu (1st Kitestu) which is not revealed yet but many in fandom believe it is with Samurai Gandhi of Gorosei (One of the 5 elders of WG who look like Gandhi)

He has been excited to draw this arc like this is the arc where it really gets intense and the story of the series will get more interesting, more lore and more backstory
Wano started with a banger. Act 1 is amazing 🔥😎👌
Oda stated that his favorite moment was the start of Wano arc
Having no panels is fine, but please don't feel pressured to keep your videos concise. The fact that you discuss the little details and go on rants about your favorite moments is a big part of why I enjoy your reviews!
We all got nervous when time travel was introduced, but believe me, Oda knows how to handle time travel in the best way: by furiously putting limitations on it.

@@phenomenonnarutokun yeah, like I said, the intense stuff is great. It's when you get stuff like the sumo match that it starts to drag.
Yeah, especially with the new style that was introduced it felt so very fresh and exciting!
I can’t believe your on Wano! So exciting! I can’t wait to see her thoughts on the beginning of Act 3!
Loved this video. So happy you're here. It's so bittersweet though, because I know this means less One Piece Content from you soon 💔. But I'm very excited to be able to talk theories with you! And maybe do more deep dive discussions on characters and moments from the series 😄. (Whatever you think is best/have the most interest in doing)
Selfish request though: I would still love it if you had an episode talking about or ranking the One Piece Openings. I know of course you can't play them, but I think a discussion would be very fun.
Merph happy to see how far you've come in the story. You're almost one of use you just need to see the words all one piece fans dread. Break next week.......
She need to make one piece topic videos in advance then...
It’s a mixture of happiness that he’s taking breaks but sadness because how can you have such an awesome last scene and then tell someone to wait two weeks!
im very happy for oda being able to take as many breaks as he needs
It's mix feeling , I'm happy Oda-sensei got break, but sad as fan because I can't read new chapter next week.
I was worried when time travel came up also. As a "caught up" person and without revealing anything it's done well - at least so far. Oda is the man.
27:30 About this, saying Oda is the best Mangaka isn't something that everybody is going to say, so we have to see it as an opinion, in my opinion it is, to meeeee it is... I don't know how many mangas i've already finished, but One Piece is the only one that makes me feel "in love"
He sure is a top class mangaka, imo Kentaro Miura and Naoki Urasawa are the top of all time
Oda’s the goat
@@DharcVasquez yep Kentaro Miura was artistically better by FAR. While I like One Piece better and understand that the plot is superior I can’t in my right mind say that it’s better than Berserk or not yet at least. But with Utasawa he’s been lacking since Asadora! imo
I feel Oda as a Mangaka is a solid top10, like it or hate it. It has its flaws of course which doesnt allow him to be on Top5 imo. But pretty close.

I'm in love with the passion for Oda's world building you had during the 30 minute mark
Your One Piece content is gold, continue doing this amazing job, even if you need to change some things for your channel.
