I went from a 08 Silverado 4.8 to a 2019 ram hemi and I used to go 280-310 miles on the Chevy and I go 380-420 miles in the new hemi. 13 to 18 mpg gain. Same tank size
Unit per distance might help you with the initial purchase in knowing the savings, but in daily life, distance per unit is way more helpful in my opinion. If you're running low on gas, it's super easy to look at how much you have, and estimate how far you can get on it. I know when my gas light comes on, I still have about 3 gallons left, which I know means I can get another 50-60 miles if I don't drive aggressively. That math is a lot easier to do (and a lot faster in the momentary panic of "Oh no, I'm low on gas!"), rather than "Okay, I have 3 gallons left, and I get 5 gallons per 100 miles, so that's 60% of 100 miles, which means I could get up to 60 more miles." I realize it's pretty much the same thing, but I'd rather know how far I can get on a given amount of fuel than how much fuel it's gonna take to go a given distance.
Just found this I have 2021 ecodiesel limited and upgraded from 2015 ecodiesel deleted. Best option is the 33 gallon tank and I cruise at 90kmph my truck has the higher gears and can pull 36mpg if I'm not pushing big head wins. My dash will say 1400 km and 1700 km when I fill up. Great real world testing.
When the rest of the crew does their MPG tests it's almost always at 70 MPH (112kph). Those extra 8kph might have been in the diminishing return area of the transmission.

1k km per tank is totally possible if you lighten your foot a bit. I have done it several times with my EcoD. Hand calculated L/100km needs to be pretty much 9.0, don't count on the computer display to be super accurate
The first time I saw gpm was the rating for a Sherman tank - try and get a sense for those mpg. Driving right into the heart of an off-highway industrial region.
I was super excited for the baby diesels because I thought they would deliver the best range. Nobody offers the larger fuel tanks with the diesels though, so the best range I could find was a 3.5 ecoboost with the 36 gallon tank. I always get over 650 miles to a tank (about 1,050 km) and the power makes it much more enjoyable to drive. So much potential but they’re hamstrung by the emission requirements that sap power and the DEF tank gets in the way of a larger fuel tank.
My Rebel Hemi on the hwy is about 20 mpg depending on driving style, but gas is also about 65 cents cheaper than diesel. $47.25 per tank gas vs $63.75 for 25 gallons or 16.50 more per fill up. 5 gallons per 100 miles vs 4.08 gallons per 100 miles diesel or a difference of .92 gallons per 100 miles. $9.45 for 5 gallons to go 100 miles vs $10.40 for 4.08 gallons to go 100 miles. Plus add the cost of DEF and it will cost less for the gas engine on the highway, but city driving is all together a different story. City for me is 13.5 MPG or 7.41 gallons per 100 miles which would cost $14.00 per 100 miles. Not sure what the diesel gets for the city.
Nothing better than a road trip with your old man in a pick up. Done it many a time for over 1000 miles one way. Best father son bonding you can get! I would have brought a jerrycan with me just to get that 1000 km lol.
How much fuel was left in the tank? Could you have made it? My Ram fuel guage is way conservative and when I think I'm on fumes there are still a couple gallons left when I fill up.
I would say about 1.5 L since the tank capacity is 98 L and it took 96.5 L to refill at the end. ( obviously there could be some variance for fuel in the filler neck and there is also some "expansion space" allotted when they rate the tank capacity)
But Stephen, it's the same 100 gallons saved, but it's saving 33% vs. 10%, and you're saving a ton already by going from 1000 gal to 300 gal. I think it's different but not flawed.
Finally sum gud back ground music. Problem wit diesels is the cost of the package. Their was a tyme wen the duesel engine was cheaper than the gasoline engine.
i dont care about how much money im spending over time on fuel, i care about estimating how much distance i have left in my tank before i run out. especially off-road. MPG is the way to go
I don't know why you are converting metric to an American gallon at 3.78 litres . If you are doing the mpg test in Canada you should be using the old imperial gallon at 4.54 litres. As you know that's what we were using before the metric system . I have a 2015 ecodiesel with a 3.55 gear out back . I drive at 120 kph and convert it back ,I get 32.5 mpg all day long.
He tried to explain the difference between l/100km and mpg and I still don't understand how they come out any different. 33mpg is 34% less efficient than 50. You convert it to l/100km, (~4.7 & ~7.13 l/100km respectively), and the 7.13 is still 34% less efficient than 4.7.
You said if you do not want to see bug guts all over your truck, do not buy a white truck. But the black grill you focused on was covered in bugs and showed up just as much.....
Have seen a few do that. Their is foam and sound damping insulation on the engine that catches fire on the previous gen. Many people just remove it to prevent fire.
That’s good gas mileage for a pickup. The Ram is a beautiful truck but long term reliability and diesel maintenance are keeping me away. I can’t afford a new one but there are lots of nice used ones for sale and that’s the problem...why so many on the used market?
I’m sold …. Just need some 2021s to make it across the border, some zero percent financing and the bank will be a proud new owner of the truck I’ll be driving.
I'll never get why French native speakers are so uneager to have only a minimum of other languages in their life. Pretty much everywhere in the world a stop sign says 'STOP' but for some reason it says 'ARRÊT' where French is spoken. At least it's the same color and shape.
when your dad was digging into them poutine fries, all I could think about was Norm "PIG" Summerton and his French Canadian poutine fries recipe video. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Keep it that way! You'll thank me!
Ok…. If I had a car that got 1mpg then upgraded to a car that gets 2 I just saved 5000 gallons. As mpg increase the number of gallons used decrease and vis versa. It’s simple math. Personally when I look at a vehicles fuel economy what I’m thinking is how far I can go without having to fuel up. And MPG is far easier to calculate. 24galX25mpg gives me 600 miles of range. Doesn’t get easier than that.
TFLoffroad , Can you review Ram Rebel EcoDiesel on one of those muddy beautiful trails. It's most torque of all the line up. Should be best candidate for off road fun?
How is it flawed? The way you look at and interpret data can be flawed, but 2mpg vs 3mpg is just data. MPG data is useful for when you want to estimate how far you can drive when you buy fuel. Which is much more useful in every day life. If you only know the gallons/100 miles, that makes it more difficult to quickly estimate. EG, if you're getting 50gallons/100miles, how much fuel will you need to go 40 miles? 50/100 = x/40. 100x= 2000. Divide 2000 by 100 = 20 gallons. vs 2X = 40. X = 40/2. X = 20 gallons MPG is a more practical data point because you want to know how far you can go on a tank of gas more often than how much fuel you will burn per 100 km/miles.
Steve,..you actually trusted the Ram's gauges to tell the truth? I thought you might have re-filled and calculated the TFL-T way. Not bad fuel usage for a pickup though,.I am impressed!
The mileage on this diesel is not that great. My dads 5.3 v8 silverado can do 10.5 on the highway with a range of 800km so maybe like 1 litre per 100km more

i have taken it a bit further and in my mind use the marine terms of gallons per hour, my truck burns about 2 gallons an hour... and sure i could use half throttle pulling out on to a road with no traffic but if i use full throttle and merge with traffic it winds up being a a little better than if i wait... the best thing i can do for fuel economy is get where im going and shut the engine off
1k km per tank is totally possible if you lighten your foot a bit. I have done it several times with my EcoD. Hand calculated L/100km needs to be pretty much 9.0, don't count on the computer display to be super accurate
Do you thing the 3.92 rearend is too low for the diesel?
The grand Cherokee diesel will do the 1000 km Which equals 621 miles on a tank. The grand Cherokee has a 26.5 gallon tank.
I agree my 2018 ram eco 4x4 with a 26.5 gallon take has given me multiple mileage over 600 one or two over 650.
Excellent description of how to understand fuel mileage best I've ever heard
The first time I saw gpm was the rating for a Sherman tank - try and get a sense for those mpg.
Driving right into the heart of an off-highway industrial region.
Wonder how well the F-150, diesel does on same test
My friends CRV gets 9.7L/ 100km on the highway ... Didn't expect a half ton truck to have the same fuel efficiency
Isn't that similar to percentages, just a wild guess on my part! Keep up the great work .
So did I calculate this right? About 2.5 gallons over 62 miles?
Thanx for representing Canada! I wanna see if this truck could drive from Edmonton to Vancouver without fuelling up!
I’ve done Kamloops to Edmonton with just under a quarter tank left. Regular stock tank also
@@christopheracheson4731 that's awesome!!
Well that rain didn't do you guys any favors on the way back.
Never realized I already used this calculation until now.
Great video!
Always thanks for putting it in miles and how miles per hour.
All cars do that now haha, when I fill up at 1/5 of a tank vs when I'm all the way at 0 it's basically the same amount 😂
Yes! The good 'ol days before the ENVIRO-NAZIS. Imagine how good the diesels would be without all of that crap on the motors. Sad.
Steve can you run a road trip MPG test on the Colorado Diesel?
i dont care about how much money im spending over time on fuel, i care about estimating how much distance i have left in my tank before i run out. especially off-road. MPG is the way to go
That's why I use L/100 km. It's the same and you can easily convert
You would have made it easy I went 30 past the numbers given in my Eco diesel.
If you pass by Montreal , Gibeau Orange Julep it's a must
He tried to explain the difference between l/100km and mpg and I still don't understand how they come out any different.
Not far! We had one burn to a crisp on the side of the road in Manitoba a couple days ago.... 2019 Ram 1500 eco diesel.... Just went up in flames!!
What was the cause? ANything clearly the culprit?
Have seen a few do that. Their is foam and sound damping insulation on the engine that catches fire on the previous gen. Many people just remove it to prevent fire.
7:29 You haven't seen bugs until you've driven through Florida during love bug season, no color will hide that!
@@NHDude haha "love bug season" lol 😂😂
Litre to gallon, if anyone was wondering. Is 98 litre is 25 gallons.
That’s good gas mileage for a pickup. The Ram is a beautiful truck but long term reliability and diesel maintenance are keeping me away. I can’t afford a new one but there are lots of nice used ones for sale and that’s the problem...why so many on the used market?
There's even more f150s for sale used
How much does the truck diesel cost from empty to full?
What is a better truck? Ford or Ram?
Distance per volume of fuel speaks to me more because I want to know how far I will go, not how much fuel I will burn.
RAM-1500 KING OF TRUCKS
I LOVE these MPG tests.
Did you work out your mileage by hand? I'm always leery of the onboard computers.
Did anyone else notice the black bear? I'm loving my 2020 gen-3 ecodiesel! The 33 gallon optional tank is awesome!!
Any issues with the truck. I’m planning to buy one
@@fernandotalamantes471 Zero issues after two years of ownership. I love this truck!
Good Morning My Good Friends Of The Fast Lane Trucks & The Fast Loff Road
Dodge used to have a 321 rear gear I think it was . Hat might pick up mileage if available on the eco diesel but may affect towing capacity
They still do. I've been doing a lot of research on these 1500's.
I’m sold …. Just need some 2021s to make it across the border, some zero percent financing and the bank will be a proud new owner of the truck I’ll be driving.
Great video, this is interesting. Good editing as well. :)
I think you should have gone for it, that is why we watch this to get real ideas. Dad next time take one for the team.
how big of a tank and where are you driving too?
Father and son super tame 👍and nice truck man
Save yourself the drama.... 10:49 ..... 587 miles to the tank, 24.5 mpg
Much better than the Hemi. I test drove one and found it hard to keep it above 14mpg. Average was more like 12.
Can you do a Colorado diesel ZR2 MPG test? I cant seem to find real world results.
I'll never get why French native speakers are so uneager to have only a minimum of other languages in their life. Pretty much everywhere in the world a stop sign says 'STOP' but for some reason it says 'ARRÊT' where French is spoken. At least it's the same color and shape.
fantastic! I never realized the difference!
when your dad was digging into them poutine fries, all I could think about was Norm "PIG" Summerton and his French Canadian poutine fries recipe video. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Keep it that way! You'll thank me!
I can do math, no problem. MPG works just fine.
You can look at it any way you want, the amount of fuel used is still the same!
was that a 98 litre tank or 121 L?
the 98l tank he dais that at the begining
How much was that truck all in?
You guys have different shirts on??
TFLoffroad
, Can you review Ram Rebel EcoDiesel on one of those muddy beautiful trails. It's most torque of all the line up. Should be best candidate for off road fun?
Love the fact you guys got some poutine....
So if I get enough mpg I could get 0 gallons?
How awesome you get to kick it with your pops. Whens the next trip to Colorado
When you guys do the Ike and get 2 mpg in the first truck, then 3 mpg on the next truck it sounds small but is 50% more fuel used. MPG is flawed
I disagree that it’s flawed. Fractions don’t care about your feelings
50/100 = x/40. 100x= 2000. Divide 2000 by 100 = 20 gallons.
vs
2X = 40. X = 40/2. X = 20 gallons
MPG is a more practical data point because you want to know how far you can go on a tank of gas more often than how much fuel you will burn per 100 km/miles.

@@Jeffreypark thanks for saying this.
Love the music!
I don't think anyone in the US is care about measuring to be that correct that they want to switch to gl/100ml .
Hand calculated 10.21 l/100 I get that with my hemi 1500 . Tbh I'm a little disappointed
Steve,..you actually trusted the Ram's gauges to tell the truth? I thought you might have re-filled and calculated the TFL-T way.
Not bad fuel usage for a pickup though,.I am impressed!
Typical lie o meter, says it's going to go further then it does, on my 14 hemi one tank said we could go 1100kms and only ended up going like 900 lol
The mileage on this diesel is not that great. My dads 5.3 v8 silverado can do 10.5 on the highway with a range of 800km so maybe like 1 litre per 100km more
great fishing in Quebec
