Great topic, Jeff. I have to constantly remind myself that my hobby is *growing* houseplants (not Buying, not Rescuing). We all have a finite amount of time/energy and what you devote to triaging one plant takes away from another that's really going to benefit from that care. Love how practical and eco-conscious you are: using what you have. Thank you for your videos.
One of my covid lockdown projects was learning to grow cacti from seed. I planted over 1000 seeds (!) and managed to get around 300 baby cacti. When they are tiny that's manageable, but as they grew over the next couple years I had to "cull the herd" periodically. Like you, I find the process kind of therapeutic. I now have about 100 of my "covid cacti" left and they are around golf ball sized. Cacti require patience lol. I really enjoy your channel 😀
OMG! Thank you for showing me what a thrip looks like. Ive watched tons of plant care videos, but they never showed what thrips actually look like. Very helpful.
I have definitely thrown out plants. Plants that I just wasn't enjoying and plants that weren't growing no matter what I did. Tired. I got new plants to see how gorgeous they will be 😊
I guess I’m one of those who feel very guilty of disposing of plants. But I’m happy to hear that plant supposed to make you happy and there’s a lot of plants that I own that don’t and gets me frustrated. So thank you for the video. I’m encouraged now to just feel happy with the ones that are doing good. And tossing out those high maintenance ones.
You were not alone. Sometimes it's difficult to make that decision but honestly..... Line up a few plants and huck them.... Just full-on quarterback trow them! Lol
This time of year, a lot of my houseplants will start migrating outside for Summer Camp. Anything that I've been contemplating tossing out, definitely will go outside for the Summer. At the end of Summer, I will decide who can come back inside, who will be given away, and who will go to the trash!
I've been downsizing a lot of my tropical plants and houseplants lately so I can make some more time for growing vegetables and herbs 😊 It was way too much to take care of 300 plus plants on top of a home, a husband 3 dogs, chickens and my mother in law. When it gets too much it's not enjoyable anymore. It is really hard to throw away plants and give up on things but it's the right decision sometimes ❤❤ I definitely need to go through my succulents and start giving things away.
I have zero problems binning plants. My collection isn't nearly as big (I'm at about 60 or so right now and I give them the best care possible. Pests haven't been a huge issue for me outside of certain species of Alocasia. I've been honing in on the plants give me the most joy (Monstera, Philos, Syngonium, Pothos, Aglaonema) and have either given away or trashed the problem plants. Life is so much better this way.
I love this - honing in on the plants that give you the most joy. I’ve been doing this gradually over the past couple of years. I’ve gotten my collection down to a dozen plants now, but each of them have consistently provided me with joy over the years I’ve owned them. The plants I felt lukewarm about I either gave away or trashed.
How many humidifiers do you have for all your plants?? I find that if you just take them and spray the leaves with whatever you use for pests, and give them fresh soil maybe that they will recover. But if you choose to discard them, do that. I have all my plants in leca and I have O pests. I never keep a new plant in the house until I remove all the soil it was in. Quite often the soil is loaded with fungus nat eggs and that's a BIG PROBLEM not only for you but for ALL YOUR PLANTS. THANKS😅
When i threw out my Pink Princess... Man that made me so happy! 😂 Thanks for sharing Jeff, there's no shame in tossing a plant that doesn't make you happy.
Good timing on this video! I feel bad throwing them away but I threw some away today that had trips and they just don't look good! I do feel better! Less stress!
Xlnt Jeff! Yes it's OK to throw away (or pop into your outdoor garden like I do) or give it away. Your mental & physical health is far more important than a plant! Plants should bring us joy not stress, so cutting down or cutting out should always be an option.
Thank you for this video! I've been throwing problem plants out for years (feeling a bit or a lot guilty!) but it's nice to know other plant people do it too! Makes me feel a lot better!🥰🥰
So impressed with the M. deliciosa in the jar!...just love those roots & leaves 💚. My late elderly neighbour (not a great lover of houseplants) got frustrated and dumped a potted Monstera in his back garden in a North facing corner of his house wall, and it survived many British (London) Winters, and its adventitious roots 'cemented' themslves into the brickwork! I think it was trying to get to the roof for more light :)
I, too have given away houseplants that I did not love. If they are in nice pots, the recipient doesn’t know that you fell out of love. It just got ‘re-homed’. I have a beautiful cat I adopted from the NYC shelter. Same story. And we love each other!!!!
I have resigned myself to when you have nature inside, we’re gonna get everything that goes with that, which means bugs. It’s inevitable. So now it’s all about not letting it too out of control -- but I don’t get upset anymore. It’s all part of the hobby.👍🥰
This is exactly my mentality as well. You are always going to have bugs....just manage it the best you can. And if you happen to let a plant or two be the sacrifice then so be it haha
Yep, thrips are stressful. I tossed several when faced with treating the entire collection, it was so overwhelming that any plant giving me grief went right into the trashcan. So many plants look amazing with minimal care......I lose patience with the ones that just struggle and look horrid😂. I refuse to waste my emotion on guilt over them.
So glad for this video, I sometimes feel overwhelmed with my collection, I'm going to get rid of duplicates, and the ones that just don't bring me joy, I too am getting rid of my Pepperomia Hope, It just won't grow! I usually like to find them homes if I can
I just had this thought today. I have thrips and I just want to get rid of plants that I'm taking care of that I don't want anymore. This confirms that my paraiso verde needs to go in the trash. I don't want to pass on pests and I can't be bothered anymore.
I have very limited space, so I’m already rehoming some that are fine. They just don’t do it for me. If they don’t bring me joy, they’ve got to go to make room for those that will.
I know that when I have too many plants. They die! It's easy to throw out. I keep tabs on the plants that I have success with. I don't purchase any plants that I kill. I figure out that I don't have a "green thumb" for that species of plants.
That monstera is beautiful!!! I’ve finally reached the point where I am able to discard plants. I have a pretty nice syngonium collection, multiples of many varieties and they’re mealy bug magnets! I’ve decided not to fight losing battles anymore and threw out a few. I’ve way too many plants now and taking care of them has become more of a chore than joy, so I’m getting ready to give some of them, and cuttings, away. How’s your pothos competition coming along?
Love this! Totally agree @ “if a plant doesn’t give you joy, it’s got to go”. I’ve had that approach from the outset as I’ve usually only bought plants that make me happy. But, fell out of love with my peperomia hope - which looked a lot worse than yours when I finally gave up and dumped it. 😏 But there are others I couldn’t bear to give up on, ie. my Jade plant, even though the sight of its denuded straggly stems depressed me. 😖
I agree about throwing away plants that are dying, diseased, or ugly. I am wondering about putting diseased plants in the compost bin. Will the pests survive and end up in the composted soil? Also the planters: they should be thoroughly washed before reusing. Your monstera in water is amazing. Do you fertilize the water? .
I have no problems tossing plants that don't grow or have a bad insect infestation. I have given away plants and now I only buy plants that can live with a little neglect like Sansevierias and Hoyas.
sometimes i plant some of my "tired" or "no joy" plants outside in early spring and by early autumn if they look better i may take them in again.. if not they go the way of the annuals...😎
I still have a problem throwing out a plant. I did finally toss a yucca tree that wasn't doing well. Tossed it in a corner of my yard - went to pick it up other day and the top part has rooted in the ground lol
@@tonyabrown39 I wouldn't be surprised if it grows in spite of the cold and returns yearly. They can actually be a bit difficult to get rid of. Ask me how I know lol.
I would advise against giving plants with thrips away. People who have not had them before might underestimate them and then it would ruin the plants that they already owned as well. Same for root mealybugs, though they are much slower in causing damage. When water is shared between plants they will be a lot of work to get rid of. As for other pests it would be more manageable if the new owner isolates them until all pests are eradicated.
I have no guilt throwing plants away. I don't buy expensive plants so it's never a financial loss for me, and like you they go in the compost (not garbage).
Im about to toss my neon pothos.Ive tried more light, less light, watering when totally dry, watering when its about 70 percent dry but no matter what i do i get small leaves that are a very pale yellow.First i thought it was to much light but nope, these yellow leaves come in randomly over the plant. Its not rootbound etc.I have never been able to get those bright leaves on it for whatever reason. There are no bugs and i fertilize it.To the trash its soon going.

Hey Jeff, funny every time I see a thrip it’s white not black 🤔, pretty sure it’s thrips because of all the signs. I use « kill this plant » recipe for thrips but I’ve decided I’m not spending money on plants anymore, when I see signs of thrips I go nuts so, no more plants for me lol. Some are easier to keep than others so I’ll keep those 🥰
