Unless they were practically giving it away...I'd steer clear. I believe in completing one project before tackling another...Kenny deserves ALL the LOVE.
Kenny needs a freind
smart approach
Amen !!!!
He would be stupid not to buy it
Maybe Kenny would like an N14 and 18 speed, nice long frame too!
I second this.
Yup. Cab swap.
Mike you brought back a lot of old memories with this find, I drove over two million miles in BC,AB and the Yukon in the 70's and 80's all in couple of Freightliner Cabovers just like that. The reason for the steel header for the rad is because its an Artic Cab. They used steel in Canada and Aluminum in the US cabs because of cracking issues. That cab is arguable the toughest Cabover ever built because it was built for Canadian roads!! As i have always said they built Freightliners for north of the border and Freight shackers for the south side.
Before you buy it I’d make an agreement with the seller, they invest in a new ECM and plug, see if they can get it running so you can hear how it sounds. If it starts and runs good and you hear no issues, you’ll buy it plus the cost of the ECM and plug. If it doesn’t run, or runs bad or sounds bad you walk away.
Great advice.
Concentrate your efforts on one truck instead of having to many projects.
I am sorry Mike. . .but unless it's almost FREE it's NOT running and you have NO IDEA what's wrong. With it. . . RUN! RUN LIKE HELL.
👍 👍
I'd put all my energy, and money, into the Kenworth. Just my two cents.
Totally agree, fix the Cummins and the Kenworth and just enjoy it. That freightshaker is kind of a pile. Sure, it's got potential, lots of stuff does, but that doesn't always mean you should buy it. Your Kenworth is a nice truck overall, especially for its age and with relatively not much work you could bring it back to quite a looker. Just my opinion, it's not my truck, and totally up to you in the end.
The mold in the cab tells me you should run for home!
Keep working on Kenny. Those issues on the shaker could be hard to fix.
Yes, could be a lot more trouble lurking in that engine than only the ecm.
There’s a company called the Day Cab Company that makes interiors for Rigs…. Maybe ya could get interiors for Kenny and this one
The first words I was thinking were: Run Forest, Runnnnnnn!
Agreed.
Hell ya Mike !!! That’s awesome. Love Freightliner Cabovers , that is a hell of a truck. That would be a hell of a truck for fixing up. And always remember, “There ain’t nothing finer then a Freightliner “. Lol. Good luck with ur adventure and be safe.
I gotta love your love for the old cabovers Because thats what i drove in late 70s early 80s.I do remember in 1980 i had drove for 14 hours straight and i was in a 79 transtar11 and pulled into reststop cause everything started to look blurry and i was so tired so i crawled over console to get in sleeper and 2 hours later i jumped outa of sleeper and jumped hard on brakes i thought i was still driving.when i realized i was safe it scared me to death.i wanted the 80 long nosed triple black new pete it was like 83 or 4 huge sleeper on it it was a beauty our company bought but to much fighting for it and boss said west coast only back then/ the dummies raised their hands i backed out of meeting slowly as not to disturb anyone.i remeber the guy that got it he was 23 they kept him out for a mnth at a time no thanks.2 days home and he was back out brutal days
Mike you need to find yourself a running, driving cab over as your first project, Hold onto Kenny but keep looking for a really good starter project something that runs, drives, has a decent frame and just needs odds and ends done on it. Kenny seems like a total rebuild at this point.
Thanks for taking the time to film and edit these videos. You’re doing a great job!
Just a suggestion, why don't you try to get a Pete cabover😊" should I buy it" ....No...Your a Peterbilt salesman have a cabover Pete sitting in the dealership.
Thats what i think he should have done in the first place, nice 352 or 352 H,.
YES!! I might end up with three Peterbilt Cabovers if everything I'm working on comes together. LOL, Surely I will be able to make one of them happen...
Run forest Run! look for a donor for the Aerodyne and build Kenny on another chassis
Get Kenny a friend, life's too short, it's an investment, man needs his toys, man needs a hobby, I got loads of good excuses! The times coming when you won't be able to do 'guy' type things like this! Following with interest from the UK 👍🇬🇧 🇨🇦
Damm straight brother
I would stick with Kenny and make him into a thing of beauty.
I drove and worked on those trucks almost 30 years ago!
spent many a night sleeping across the seats in ol F1.
I picked one up for myself from the auction about 7 years ago.
those trucks were meticulously serviced back in the day, I would know!
cheers 🍻
Very cool!
Mike, if the price is cheaper than cheap, I'd say buy it. Get it running then possibly move it on to someone else that's looking for a Freightliner. Keep Kenny is the message from your fans. If you need another Cabover, find a runner that you can enjoy driving until Kenny is finished. Mike from Lancashire 🇬🇧.
Yes! That's exactly what I will do 😉
I just spent a year fiddling around with electrical with my N14, great engine for sure , but I kept saying would rather have a mechanical big cam when they get to be 25 to 35 years old , like Kenny ! (Hint) 😀
why don't you Replace the Injectors and the Fuel pump to those of a Big Cam and you have a Mechanical N14,
sure is work but will work since the N14 is basically an Electric Big Cam with upgraded Block.
Get the Freightliner to keep Kenny company. The interior of the Freightliner will clean up and once the ECU is sourced and fitted you may be able to use it regularly. Possibly even use it to take Kenny for any work he needs if you can also find a low loader semi trailer. One of the trailers next to the Freightliner would suit Kenny.
With Kenny maybe concentrate on fixing the Cummins and getting him road legal. Then you can drive him to where he needs to go for any further work (sandblasting the frame, extending his frame, fitting a fifth wheel etc).
Peterbilt cabover next please.
Love the old Freightliners !
Running and driving, with the stacks in the sleeper I would think it wasn’t running. Those were a nice truck in the day, engine is probably capable of 460 h.p. Biggest issue I see is the water intrusion into the cab. Was a great truck back in the day. Had a 1992 FLD 120, was a great truck. Never had an issue with the engine. Like the colour scheme, needs a lot of body work, but the engine itself was very reliable, they called the N14’s bullet proof, at that age I could see an ecm and plug needing replacement. Good luck with your decision. Too bad your 500 miles away, would love to help you with the engine in Kenny. I agree with your buddy, the cam May last a long time with your application, what C P L is the engine in Kenny.
my humble opinion is to buy this semi truck because she is in far better condition than kenny.she has some rust issues at her cabin but she has solid frame and far better looking than kenny.her issues are more easy to adress than kenny's.so, my recomendation is to buy this beautyfull lady for peanuts(if they ask more money than 1k...hit the road jack :p ) and to park her until you finish your project with kenny.after a couple of years these trucks are going to worth a fortune no matter their condition!greetings from the sunny athens-greece mate.
Love the truck content....keep Kenny ..and save this one
I love to see cab overs brought back to running and being used again.
You’ve obviously never spent months on end driving them.
@@bctw9004 I know very well how terrible they are compared to today's trucks. That does not change the fact people love them and like to see them being used again. Thanks for sharing an irrelevant comment and missing the point entirely.
Loving your channel. If the price is right, why not buy the Freightliner. You’ll be able to double the content of your channel with two different trucks and gain a wealth of knowledge in the long run. Plus I have a soft spot for Freightliners. I drive a FL112 with a sleeper cab here in Australia. Has a Detroit 60 series in it. It’s quite loud, rough and mildly uncomfortable but I love it.
Buy it ! You have more to work with than Kenny. I used to drive Freight-shakers in the 90’s. And early 00’s and I loved them, 2007 I got a new Kenworth W900 and I wanted my Freight shakers back, my guess is most these guys commenting have not ever driven a truck or the old school Freightliners, which were great trucks.
Buy it 👍🏻 from Yorkshire 🇬🇧
With it being a 93 having a N14 and last in service and inspected n 14 and having literally all of the parts and basically just needing a body overhaul cleanup and some engine maintenance she would make a good addition to the fleet... A LOT of good old parts clearly still all there
Mike there are certainly some good parts on that truck to help kenny along for sure!
LOve the Freightshaker. Aluminum you just scuff and weather proof with paint later on. If you don't like the cab you can always pop that one off and get one with a bigger bunk from a wrecker and pop it back on [check out the auction places for crane trucks as they can go pretty cheap and you can wheel the cabby's outside to unhinge and lift off and on with a crane truck [or eventually get a gantry hoist on wheels like the salvage yards all have that peeps use to grab motors on pick and pull days at the yards]. You can wheel the Cabby's back inside of your shop for engine work if you're going to in frame Kenny without having to worry about roof clearance issues]. Definitely keep Kenny :-) Both trucks are works of modern, industrial Art :-)) Maybe your Cummins tech friend could help you with the in frame on Kenny [Bearing kits aren't too expensive]. What did he say about Kenny's Cam? Can you replace the one lobe? There's in frame videos out there for sure. :-)) Anyway, Kenny is a ROCK START Mike! Keep him alive and give him the love bud! Makes for fantastic videos! Patching holes in aluminum with a tig welder shouldn't be hard after you clear all that nonsense off the roof of the Freightshaker. Be cool if you could find the old Canadian "White Freightliner" emblem ;-) Or will that be an older one for later down the road? :-)) Got me going at any rate! NOICE!!
Kenny and Frida 🤣 You should get it. Absolutely...
She’s a good prospect for sure nice old truck 👍🏻
if it´s cheap and you really love it, buy it. BUT guard it and finish Kenny first! Only if you´re a "rich" guy you can do the two at the same time.
Spot on with your comment. Totally agree.
Mike you can find freightliner cabovers pretty cheap here in Texas.
Too many unknowns on this one. That mold may be indicative of all sorts of problems with the cab. No matter what you 'think' about the engines condition, without it running, you can't 'know'. There are still plenty of old cabovers around and I'm sure if you want another, they'll surface soon enough.
Don't get distracted Mike, double down on Kenny, get the inframe done, rip the back end off and make some big steps! Don't go and do a Bruce Wilson on us now.... Any project will have tough spots and problems, form a plan and go for it!
I don't know what Bruce Wilson did but Im committed to Kenny
@@mikethetrucknut Great stuff. Looking forward to the build!
wish you could find a 1980 pete cabover it was a cummins 400 13 speed i drove one for 2 years wow it was such a upgrade from the 79 transtar 400 cummins 13 speed it had air ride the transtar had leafs.the ride difference and the look inside cab plowed the transtar
Thats a beauty im 19 and i used to work on these with a freind of mine and they are just solid trucks rhat have a great history factor and are just fun
It's only got 196,000 KMS driven to church on Sunday. If we were NOT crazy all this rusted Gold would go to the metal crushers, and NOT be hopes and dreams of the future, or lawn orinments.
Famous last words it ran before it was parked. Say $1200.00 fast and it does not hurt the wallet as much.
Sharpe Truck either way your wife will love it
You have your hands full with Kenny. Get Kenny done and there is always another one down the road. There is a Freightliner coe on RT 701 in North Carolina just north of the SC line for sale. It' a southern truck.
Keep Kenny and search for a Peterbilt big brother cab over. They are out there. Too many unknowns with the Freightliner plus the cab/mold issues!
I'am Your Newest Subscriber Great Videos John In Florida
$1500 just to see if it runs, and that interior with all the mold? NO WAY! Spend your $ on Kenny
Take the Freightliner. That's the attraction of screwing! The Interieur, that can make the Daycab Company. Yes, it is a lot of Work to do Mike. But when it is finished you will have a wonderful Truck.
No no no. Do not buy that truck! A peterbilt man with a buggered old freightliner. Get a buggered old K series least you can use it for spares for the one you have.
Well Mike it's clearly your decision. They stuff called RMR86 on Amazon to get the mold & mildew out. You stated that they had truck running and found needs a ecm. Then running not issue, the bubbles in paint are where the surface wasn't clean when painted and they make a primer that will seal out corrosion places. Good luck like your channel.
Don't get rid of Kenny!! He needs you. I think there are better trucks out there. Keep looking
Nme this one (Lenny),i am watching you all the way another good piece of history machine to preserve.
BUY IT, MIKE....... you definately need to be a fleet owner........ GO FOR IT
Kenny needs a friend she’s a beauty and has the right drive train
Yes
Cab swap the freight shaker, keep the long haul tank, and itll be great. It depends on what your doing. A fuel tank that big would be pretty sweet for camping purposes.
Nice color combo. But a not running engine and corrosion in the cab is a risk. If you can buy it cheap it’s maybe intresting.
If you do buy it, I hope you keep that black, white and gold paint scheme. That looks pretty sweet.
I love the old winch truck.
It's pretty sweet but has mildew in the cab
Twin stick junior.
Good morning Mike good look buddy take care
I love Kenny, I might fell in this later.. but not now :) So Kenny would be my first choice!
Check the cab Frame Rails to see if they are rusted out those surface bubbles can be straightened out with sandblasting wash the interior with some Bleach to get rid if the Mold find the leaks and repair them probally from the light bar on top.....
Go for it 👍
Looks like a good doner truck for the KW.
IDK if you bought it, but I hope you did. It looks bad but nothing that can’t be fixed, I think it dose have potential. I love the color scheme to, black and white with those gold lines.
Ooh a peterbilt 352 double bunk would be sweet...worth more money too
wow that View is beautiful its just too windy though..that freightliner looks good try to find some parts for kenny if possible
If you are not going to ditch Kenny, I suggest sticking with fixing Kenny. A second project truck would be a distraction and another money pit.
Keep Kenny but don't buy the Freightliner. 1200 dollars for an ECU and it still might not work too much of a gamble.
My current moto is 'Use what you've got!'.
You've got one fix it first.
My memory of old Freightliner cab over was the company that hauled cement powder, where I worked there is a long steep hill you knew the truck was coming straight piped Series 60 Detroit. The driver knew how to drop gears we all know what the jake is on a 60 series aka loud. Truck was the same era as the one in this video.
Thats a good looking truck man. Yea i would have to pit old kenny tonthe side and work on that one first. That one appears to need less work. Im a pete amd kw guy but thats the cabover i like the most. Its just something about the way it looks. That n14 is a good motor. If you take care of em they will run a long ways. Get rid of those flashing lights on top..
Its a nice truck for it to be 29 years old
I net it was a pretty truck back when it was newer
Brother Mike, I am a supporter. If we were best friends, I'd repeat what your other fellow brothers and sisters below are saying in Comments. Kenny is a keeper. Your K100 Aerodyne is special, especially when you some day repaint in handsome "BJ & The Bear" colours. This Freightliner is not special. I'm with the others -- you should pass on this one. Concentrate now on fixing Kenny. I like the idea of you buying another vintage truck. Just not this Freightliner. You are, after all "Peterbilt Mike". I'm a Kenworth person. That said, seems your next logical cool vintage truck find should be a 1970s - 1980s Peterbilt. Either cabover or conventional. You found an interesting Peterbilt cabover earlier, at the same site as Kenny. What happened with that?
It's tied up in family issues, the fellow that owned it passed away and his Ex wife is involved. I'm still trying for those ones.
Bye it and take your time doing it up you may have a good truck
Don’t do it Mike
Yep spend all the Love one Truck. Do it for Kenny!!!
Glad you aren’t going to kill Kenny!!
Porter greetings!🇺🇸 I like a Freightliner cabover…they have style and character too! I’ve never heard that about the N14 Cummins connectors. I’m sure it happened though. Would it fry the computer? I’m sure you will find other issues but it doesn’t seem to be too bad so far…nothing that can’t be fixed. I haven’t seen a couple of your last videos so I’ve missed something for sure. Hope to see this rig added to your list of toys. 🤩 Question is…Do you have room for it? Even the KW with the steel cab sounds interesting. We’re those trucks specifically made for the oil field or something like that? I always thought that the cabs were all aluminum. Learning something new. 🤩😳
Kenny needs a friend... So does Freddie... They would be great company for one another!!!!
Don’t buy this one by a peterbilt cabover
I think that I would buy a parts-truck for Kenny if I was determined to buy another truck. One with a longer chassis and the engine parts that you need. It doesn't even need to have a cab on it.
Get it!! You NEED 2!!
Seen this truck on the oilfield roads .passed it maney times. Big company
Buy IT for parts... At the scrapyard where you found the parts you could buy a cab or some parts for cheap... But you could buy a cabover thare again OR keep looking for a better one
That's a nice Fruitliner. Yeah, it shows it's age and use, plus living in a damp environment. But the bones are there and it is a cool end of an era vehicle.
If you have the room to store it, and your wife is cool with it, buy it and set aside until Kenny is running properly. Kenny will look out and see the "replacement". It'll make Kenny behave :-)
Do you have the time for 2 project trucks?
Kenny needs a friend. FREIGHTLINER!!!
Yuppers, get Kenny a friend so if one goes down for a major repair you e got a backup in the barn.
Not to mention a spare engine that's better than the Cummins.
I would buy 2 of the same model and build one good one out of the best parts or go to a truck show and spend more money on one that is fully restored and for sale, sometimes you can buy them for half what it would cost to restore and you have a 10/10 truck.
That truck is for somebody really desperate for a truck. That is not you. If you want another cab over, while you concentrate on Kenny, keep your eyes peeled for a nice 372 Pete from far south of the Rust Belt. One that has nice components and is in pretty good shape. Then you will have something with nice performance that not everybody else has. Step Up to Class.
Mike, I am in Saskatchewn and got fires going here too with smoke everywhere, last count for fires here was 147
If the trucks cheap buy it for the rear end and possibly the motor for Kenny. If not don't waste more money on bigger problems. Spend the money to restore the aerodyn .it's a rare truck.
My opinion only, Midwest ECM is great to use for an N14 ECM
Buy it IF the price is right, & they'll deliver it. I can't believe that the manufactures of the cab overs never motorized the cab lifting mechanism. The water leaking in the cab would concern me.
Cabovers came with air operated pumps for lifting if you chose that option. I had it on all my coes.
I wouldn't spend the time on this Truck STAY on one project at a time. You have a hard time focusing on one project your all over the place. Plus you are a little impatient but We all are you want these Rebuilds done in months when it sometimes takes year's. Most of all if You don't have the money don't do them Good Luck with your Truck
Yeah I have a few trucks on the go. It's going to be a lot of fun though. I will just have to stop at three... Maybe.
@@mikethetrucknut LOL 😂😂. Hell YEAH Brother Awesome attitude towards the Truck's Love it Enjoy your Day
It's a old horse , cant expect too much , but for it being where it is at It is in good condition I've seen worse that are newer, good luck .
Take the $ you were going to spend on it and getting it home and put it into Kenny. Go through the 444 and find a frame somewhere that isn't eat up with rust and build Kenny. All that corrision and Mold/Water damage scares me. If you want a playmate for Kenneth lol. Buy that Pete that you showed in a previous video, the one that was some kind of special build for somethin local I don't remember what you said it was.
Yes you should buy the freightliner cab over.
Your idea of looking fine and mine are in completely different galaxies... As a person that has restored a couple of old cars... RUN AWAY.
Stop trying to justify blowing your money on something that will really be a MONEY PIT.
I am okay with the engine and the plug ordeal is no biggie, that eighteen speed would have my checkbook out, the rear ends are not bleeding to death and as for those tires, easier on the pocket book. I thought you said the air conditioning was unhooked so it might bite a little. Has steels on the back and that to me is a good thing as the old aluminum wheels die a hard death on the insides. No grease streaks on the wheels or frame and even the engine and transmission doesn't have high mile grease and oil buildup. I didn't see you grab a wrench and check the boxes or rear ends for foam and white goodness. As for the cabin, its really solid or everything on the insides of freightliners would be falling down. All prices will move and with wet interior and other little blemishes you can tell the owner that really its just so much to get road ready and they come down quick as it doesn't owe him money being that old. If its under ten its workable and if its under eight at the house, its easy money in the bank as a flip. I don't think that the ECM is bad, just the connection dies. Tooth brush it and fix that plug as they are rebuildable. Just push the little clips and wires will come right out. Cleanliness is godliness so one wire at a time with some muramic acid and then the electric grease stuff on each one so it doesn't do it again... its best to cut the ends of the wires off and replace each pin so the green up the wire doesn't visit again for a long time.... they all do including the Pete. If your not gifted as a mechanic at all then run away because paying someone else is crazy. I also have a loony idea.... get them side by side and swap that eighteen into your truck and dump the nine into the fruitcan. As for mold, we all have breathed some air that would take paint off of a brass mule statue. I won't tell you where my nose was in mexico just before I went to nam but I did have something in my eyebrows that moved. Lucky me that was all.An ozone cleaner would suck the oder out but thread will put the headliner back where it belongs. I can see that the truck hasn't seen much off road time or the bumper and grill would be a unusable one. Did the front axle look like it had took out any speed bumps?? After you left home, you got a free peek at some cool old rigs and he has quite a few that are not earning revenue so he will take what you offer most likely if its not too insulting. I would offer no more than five as a start somewhere as the parts are more than that. Your stuck on Petes so forget the I want another truck Mike, as I just really don't see you excited enough yet.I believe most of that interior was good and the door cards are easy enough. Go back to some of the other junk yards that seperate pieces and parts.... that might of been Tim Gentry of Gentry and sons that has me thinking it was you in the yard with parts galore .... its on you Mike and Tim is wanting to build his fleet to two hundred trucks.
Amazing post great info!
I think staying with Kenny until u get it further along is the best option. The FL needs too much work already & u haven't even gotten deep into it
