  • How to change the oil on a Volvo Penta D2-55 diesel engine. On this week's Fix it Friday we do an oil change on our Volvo Penta D2-55 4 cylinder diesel engine aboard our Bavaria 47 yacht. We use a fancy oil suction pump to drain off the engine sump, replace the oil filter and refill with new fresh oil. It's quite a simple process that anyone can do as long as you have a few necessary tools.
    Fix it Fridays are extras to our normal episodes and feature some of the little jobs/projects we do aboard the boat on a daily basis. These are for entertainment purposes only and may or may not be the correct way to do them :) It's just the way we did them. Some of these episodes may be out of the time line from our normal episodes.
    Hope you enjoy them.

    Hi enjoyed this video. The reason the pump wouldn t suck from the dipstick is because the pipe was not in deep enough.With your Pella pump there is a thinner pipe that will go all the way to your sump bottom through the dip stick hole.I normally push it in until it reaches bottom then lift up about a mil. 6 strokes is all you need. Then you can enjoy a cup of tea while it drains by it self. ps i also marked the pipe with the correct oil level so if you slightly overfill its easy to accuractly bring it to the right level

      Thanks Noelio. Yes I figured that was the problem, but on this engine the drain tube (which the hose is the right size for) is fitted to the sump drain plug. Not something i'd seen before on previous vehicle oil changes, it's normally the drain plug I remove. I had to give it a few pumps every so often as the seal around the top of the oil pump wasn't perfect so air was escaping thus losing the vaccum effect.

    Might I suggest a large disposable baby diaper or nappy, I think you might know it as laid down to catch spills and easily thrown away. Additionally, one or two silicone 23 X 33 cm (9" X 13") baking pan (or whatever size or sizes might fit) can be squished into the space beneath the engine to catch any leakage. It/They can easily be cleaned with one of the aforementioned nappies or a turkey baster if there's a bit of a puddle.

    Can't wait till you guys set sail!
    Try a plastic bag on the oil filter for the next change.

      Cheers, yeh know the plastic bag trick, but got away with it. the drain pump got it nearly all out. :)

      Hi Keith, we are planning on a shakedown sail in the next couple of weeks, then we have a trip back to the UK to take our van back. We will then be setting off for a few months cruise at the end of April/beginning of May. We are planning on heading over towards Rhodes where we are picking our daughter up, sailing up towards Kos, where we drop her off, then heading up North exploring the islands as we go on the Eastern side before the strong Meltemi takes hold. That then allows us to sail back downwind towards Crete checking out the other islands with favourable winds on the way back, arriving back in Crete around mid September. Glad we are helping you to live the dream.

      Thanks Keith, there'll be plenty of video footage to edit and put out. It will keep us busy though. And we thought we'd come here to retire lol! We probably spend more time filming, editing and social media than we ever did when we had a photo and film company lol!

    We mention it in the video, but the rubber belt oil filter wrench worked where the metal strap one wouldn't, probably due to the fact that we couldn't get enough torsion on the metal strap so it kept slipping. Got it off in the end though :)

      Volvo Perkins is new to me. In the home country of Volvo all marin engines are called Volvo Penta. Now your oil change is a bit scary to me. My old Volvo Penta 70D with 6 cylinders and 120 Hrs has 30 liters of oil according the manual. That will take some time to drain.

    • @CarlandJennySailingAdventures
      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mats Alm, thanks for your comment. Okay, You are correct that the Volvo engines are Penta, however depending on which Japanese factory, yes they are built in Japan, sold the engine it sometimes goes to the Perkins factory first and then sold on to Volvo. So my engine is the Volvo Perkins/Penta D2 55. It has both Penta and Perkins stickers on the engine. I had to research online to find this info. Your 70D 6 cyclinder engine is a lot bigger than the D2-55 4 cylinder. The minimum oil capacity excluding filter is 8.9 litres and Maximum oil capacity excluding filter is 10.6 litres. Hope that helps. I have edited the tile to clear any ambiguity :)

    D-2 engine have dedicated oil drainage pipe from the bottom of the sump pan. Use that instead and an oil change Will go faster. I can highly recommend to change position and alignment of the charge separator. To have it like the bavaria yachtbau made.. makes it run hot and will fail under some circumstanses. I usually put it under the nav board instead an aligned so the air can Flow throught the heatsink properly. In The engine compartment it is to hot to operate the unit.

    Next time, maybe tip the oil container into the empty bottle outside the boat unless you want many TH-cam views and a big mess to clean up! 😃 keep up the good work

    The SPHERE device should have a TUBE that fits entirely WITHIN the dipstick opening...allowing it to REACH all the way to the SUMP. (not just the beginning)
    Thus, NO need to loosen ANY fittings to extract the oil.

    • @CarlandJennySailingAdventures
      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not on ours lol. The pipe with our Sphere device ONLY fits the drain pipe built into the engine, so no need to use dipstick tube.

  • @normanboyes4983
    @normanboyes4983 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Was that a pukka PELA pump or a no name copy? The PELA normally comes with a thinner pipe that will go all the way down the dipstick, yours looked as though it entered the tube but did not progress down to the sump so therefore could not work. On the pump side of thing once you have pumped a vacuum charge in the unit that should do the transfer, maybe repump once during the transfer that’s it. The fact that you were pumping so much suggests you were losing vacuum from the chamber or your hose end was not fully immersed in oil. Maybe examine the seal in the top of the flask?

      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on the make Norman, it was on the boat already and it's now stowed away again under the front berth. See my reply to Noelio a few minutes ago. I answer what you have just mentioned :)

    • @normanboyes4983
      @normanboyes4983 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl and Jenny Sailing Adventures Carl it is worth persevering to get the PELA working - as a first step - I would contact Pela and ask if they sell a thinner tube separately. Once you have this working it is so quick and controls the mess it really is worth getting sorted. www.pelapumps.co.uk/default.aspx?a10page=contactretail&a10type=retail

    • @CarlandJennySailingAdventures
      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Norman, we don't need the thinner pipe. Our engine has a drain tube on what would be the usual sump drain plug. It has a rubber cap that simply pops off and the pipe we have fits in perfectly. It goes straight to the bottom of the sump. You can see it on the video The only minor issue was that I had to pump every minute or so as there was a slight leak on the seal where the pump joins the bottle, could have been user error. We didn't have any mess. Not like when you do an oil change on a car or motorbike and you unscrew the sump drain plug and get an arm full of oil lol! This was so much easier. Thanks for the link.

    C+J been looking at your marina prices on the website, do you know is that including VAT or not.

    • @CarlandJennySailingAdventures
      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave, pretty sure that’s including vat. You also get a discount each year if you book 12 months and if you have a Greek tax code. We will be coming back here for next winter so have booked 12 months. It is only €50 more and we have the reassurance we can come back any time in the year if we need to.

      This is a great place to winter. Right in the town center which has quite a bit going on. Nicely protected and a great group of people. Early booking is essential though. Next winter is almost booked up. We will probably book the following year also before we start heading West.

    • @davecollins494
      @davecollins494 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The prices in Croatia this year have gone through the roof, plus the massive hike in Cruising tax, I was interested that you got a ferry from Venice, as I live in a place near Deggendorf in Germany (Ex Rochdalian) which is 7 Hrs by car and I never thought of that for getting down to Greece. I plan do go down to Sicily Next year and hop over from there, but need to find a nice place to keep the boat and a good cruising area as then I should be just retired.

    • @CarlandJennySailingAdventures
      @CarlandJennySailingAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well everything suggests that the cruising tax in Greece is going to be implemented this year, but we'll see. A lot of people think it won't happen but personally I think thats just wishful thinking. If we can get away with it for another year then great but I think people have to accept, it's coming! The Ionian might be a good place although it gets busy in the summer. A lot of the charter boats from Turkey have now set up there! I think Crete is great for a winter berth, and then go cruising for the summer months elsewhere. If you've not seen our earlier videos about packing up the house etc before we moved on to the boat, then I recommend you watch them. That retirement date comes round very quickly and before you know it, it's here and then its a mad rush to get everything sorted. One piece of advice is start yesterday! You can't do that so start today :) Have fun.
