Jack, when my 2 sons were in HS, they both took a night to make dinner. My oldest son Bill learned to make Meat sauce and cook Pasta...my youngest son Jesse learned to make Baked Ham and
Mashed Potatoes...every two weeks they vaccumed and dusted, switching chores.
Bill is now a Galley Captain (Supervisor/ Chef) in Navy , married with 9 month old son. Jesse is engaged and works in Computer Engineering here in Maine . What you learn young will always be
there for you later in life...Cooking can be the creative outlet...You just created a huge meal for 7 ...

HI HOLLARS! Two days in a row with videos! Yay!!!

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

The boys might like to have the Masterchef Junior Cookbook. It's not too horribly expensive, and helps kids learn the basics. It would be a great addition to homeschooling, as well... in the olden days, we had Home Economics that taught all these useful skills (cooking, sewing, grocery budgeting, meal planning, cleaning, etc.). They could do that at home, and their help can take some of the household stuff off you.
Enjoyed this episode. Nice to get to learn/know your boys, what they like to do, things they're learning, and so on. It also helps them overcome camera shyness. 🙂

About cutting up onions: I heard many, many years ago, that if you keep your mouth closed as you cut up onions, you won’t cry. I have done it that way since hearing of it, and it does work. If I open my mouth during the process, the eye-watering starts immediately. So try it, Jack and Meg! Jack and all the boys are such great workers and helpers. This video was really enjoyable.

Nothing I like better than seeing kids help their mother. My Dad worked hard and Mom stayed home. There were four of us kids and Mom had her hands full. She was up before dawn and never went to bed before midnight. Being the oldest I always tried to do everything I could to help her in anyway I could. She loved all of us and we knew it. This video reminded me of that. 😊

For folks who don't have livestock to feed scraps to, all of the odds and ends, including onion and garlic skins, are great in making broths and stocks. Also, I learned that roasting chicken with the breast side down tends to make the breast meat more juicy.

So each year, you need to raise about 104 chickens. That does save you a lot of money and time at the store. Jack is so cute and he will be a wonderful cook starting this early!

You are doing Jack so much good by getting him used to the idea of creating a family meal. A lot of boys never get the chance to become self sufficient in the kitchen. He will be trying new dishes soon.
I can recommend an excellent book for beginner cooks: Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking. It's a LARGE book full of all sorts of knowledge, about the basic cooking methods, the use of various seasonings, and some recipes to use. It explains WHY. Which is half the battle.

Such a sweet young man! He’s learning a life-long skill. Both my sons loved to cook and are very good at it, very creative. Good job Jack.

So glad to see you are teaching your kids how to do stuff. I know that is why you chose the lifestyle you have so you could spend time with them and do things as a family.

Hello! My daughter had a “grumpy/crying” phase for a while; it’s good that you and hubby can spell each other and take a break. I used to put mine in a comfy baby seat and let her watch Barney at bedtime; volume down low...I played the same tape every night too and within a few minutes she slept. Did that for quite a while! ❤️
Try Barney Songs from 1995 on TH-cam.
    It is a lifesaver. ❤️

The TH-cam Kids channel has a number of gentle lullaby videos/songs that will lull her to sleep.

That looked great. Good job Jake. Your baby is so cute and her crying at the end was her way of saying I'm hungry and want some chicken lol. I hope you and your family have a great day.

It's taken a while to get to know quiet Jack, but I just adore that kid! It's always been so obvious that those boys love and respect their dad. They always want to get in on whatever he's doing. So, so great to see Jack working with mom and seeing Meg glow with pride! You both are so good at parenting. Your kids do you proud!
