    I was waiting for Kenny to say : "Of course, you could save this as an FX chain so you don't have to do this everytime". Anyway, great tutorial as usual :)

    • @REAPERMania
      @REAPERMania  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah. I did think about adding that at the end. But then you'd still have to tweak each plugin anyway so I wasn't 100% sure if it was worth it. But yeah. Use an FX Chain if it's quicker for you.

    This is some next level stuff! The more I watch these videos, the more I use stock REAPER plugins.

    Thanks to your recent videos this is quickly becoming one of my favorites for sculpting dynamics on tracks.
    It's also nice to finally be able to put a face on the voice I've listened to over and over.

    Thanks Kenny and the team Cockos for both the GREAT product Reaper is, and for helping lots of people getting the most out of it with all these vids. You might not (officially) want to have the Daw market in your hands.. but with the great package you have, I think it is just a matter of time. Congrats guys. And thanks again!

    Kenny. I first learned about you at Groove 3. I just learned about this YT channel a couple weeks ago. If I had had any idea what could be done with these Reaper plugins I could have saved myself a LOT of money. I made the mistake of taking them for granted because eight years ago when I started building my home studio I was strictly a musician with zero engineering knowledge so I looked at all these plugins and having no idea whatsoever of what any of them were beyond the reaeq an reacomp and noticing how bare bones the GUI’s were I embarked down Shiny Object Lane.
    I post this both to applaud and thank you and to hopefully prevent other newbies from making the same mistake.
    This video is brilliant. I’m going to copy a mixed project and strip the 2 bus and try this chain out. Regarding plugins though I must say that I have found Slate’s FGX to be absolutely nothing short of incredible. With that at the bottom of any master chain it provides an absolutely transparent finish and gain boost to any mix. Do you know of anything that compares?
    And I must say also that we out here in WTF land are extremely fortunate to have you! Thanks again buddy!

    • @REAPERMania

      Ha ha don't beat yourself up. Although amazing things can be done with Reaper plugins used in combination, it all takes time to set up and can be distracting to the creative business of getting on and making music. Also, the Reaper GUIs are very basic and not very uplifting. I have bought an embarrassing number of Shiny Object plugins, some I've almost forgotten I have, others have been invaluable at allowing me to quickly get something really good going in my mixes. I must admit though that at some point I would really like to see just how good I can get a mix (knowing what I do now about mixing) using only what is available in Reaper. And of course, Kenny is a God when it comes to helping unravel the mysteries of both Reaper and mixing in general. I can't imagine moving away from Reaper to some other DAW (although for some mad reason I get a bit curious about Harrison Mixbus 32C. Nooooo.....somebody stop me ha ha)

    • @zarlok5294
      @zarlok5294 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andreasfranzmann9634 Yes but I run a UAD X 6 with a satellite 2 on a pretty good IMac so I hardly ever have any CPU issues anymore. If I do on a really heavy mix it’s from virtual instruments (superior 3, ez bass, etc) so I just render stems and shut them off. I don’t delete them though. Learned that the hard way ... like everything else! 🤪

I know that you have made a series about first midi song on this channel. But it would be so kind of you if you revise mixing techniques on a whole song which also has vocals etc things in it. I hope you will read my message.

  • @GrandpaTheobald
    @GrandpaTheobald 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I knew about this way of splitting and joining bands within Reaper and thanks to your video now I know a bit more about how to set it^^ But wouldn't the upward compression a bit too much if used on a mastered track? In your video you implement it on pop music so it makes sense to gain loudness while sacrificing dynamic range, but what about other music genre? Do you think it could be viable to use this chain (multiple times if needed to avoid over-compressing at once) as a last mastering step, right before the signal starts hitting the ceiling so you take care of compression with multi-bands when it starts "mattering", in a way.
    Thanks!

  • @cowbless
    @cowbless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To be honest, I'm a bit hesitant to use JS splitters because they don't offer any control over the filter slopes/types that do the splitting. But, I guess, if you say it's good enough for a master chain, Imma trust you on this one :D
    Hate that there's always this feeling with music that you're not hearing something bad that's going on.

    So Kenny, could you use this compressor as a noise gate too. Drop the response at a certain point (say -30db) with a soft 'knee' or vary the gain/attack? I will try that with a dry track to see what the effect is. I do voice over so I don't have drum or music tracks. Thanks!
