    This is super important because these JS plugins have been so neglected for years, because there has been very little background and/or explanations about how to use them. These videos which are very clear will change that. Thank you Kenny!

    I started using the 1175 because of you, Kenny. I love 1176 style comps because I started getting to know compression with the Bomb Factory BF-76 in Pro Tools. I’ve used Reaper since 2015 and didn’t know there was an 1176-style compressor bundled into it until I saw you using it. Now I have my 1176 built right into Reaper. I’m not even using my other versions anymore. :)

    I am looking forward to using this plugin. I am very new to all of this and, for the moment, am just using Reaper to record my clarinet and saxophone for you tube videos. I think this plugin sounds better than the cuckos compressors, but I have no idea why. I have watched lots of videos since the pandemic started that reference the different compressors and give a cursory explanation about what they do well - but there is never much explanation as to why different compressors excel in certain situations. Additionally, there is not much information and tips on how to capture and process sounds of orchestral/woodwind/brass instruments. Do you have a suggestion regarding compressor choice for a clarinet and/or saxophone? Perhaps a thought on the benefits of recording with a gain structure (I don't think I am advanced enough to use that term!) that does not require any compression? This is a fascinating this to have surprisingly been thrown into because of the state of the world - and I really appreciate all I have learned from you!

    • @REAPERMania
      @REAPERMania  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You have to look at it more like art and less like science. There is no reason why some things sound better for certain things than others. Unfortunately, you just need to try it and see what you like. Remember, if we both went thru every compressor ever created, we'd probably pick different ones. What you think a clarinet should sound like might not be what I think it should sound like. You just have to mess around and find something that works for you. I also like the 1175 better for some things than the ReaComp compressor. But not everything. Good luck.

    It is worth pointing out that to the best of my knowledge, The Rocket does have a few more differences than just the plugin interface. Dan Worrall has recently pressured an update which fixed quite a nasty little bug in the algorithm for one as I am sure people are aware, but the algorithms are still the older algorithms that Stillwell audio used overall. Also because it is a JS plugin, it is not as efficient as it could be. This is by no means a reason NOT to use it. At the end of the day, if it sounds good, use it for sure. But do the two null with the phase test and same settings? I haven't tested it myself actually, but if I was to guess I'd say not. I could be wrong, as I say I haven't tested it. I am just going on what I have heard around on the forums. In any case, great video Kenny. :).

    Thanks, Kenny. I've been using the ReaComp, which is great. However, 1175 presents more like HW compressors I've used in the past. What is the compelling use case to use ReaComp over the 1175?

    Hi Kenny,
    Once you compressed the kick and snare, I noticed they were clipping.....what would you do to combat that, but not lose any of punch and volume you'd just got through the compression..??

    What’s the advantage of using this compressor over ReaComp?

  • @JipJonker
    @JipJonker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does this plugin really emulate the 'original' 1175 compressor? So it is 'as good' as any other emulation of this compressor? I mean does this introduce the same harmonic distortion that the 1175 hardware unit does? I am not sure if I can hear this, but I will try to compare this JS plugin to the Cockos compressor and some other 1175 plugins I have. But I am not sure my ears are trained enough to really hear the harmonic distortion (color) added by these plugins ;-) Can you hear this is a good emulation of the 1175 Kenny?

    • @REAPERMania
      @REAPERMania  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean the 1176. I don't think it's trying to emulate as much as do a similar thing.

    • @JipJonker
      @JipJonker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@REAPERMania Mmm the plugin is called JS:1175 so that's what confused me probably. But in the screenshot of the hardware unit I see that's an 1176. Not sure if there is even a 1175. Anyway, I thought the whole purpose of emulating hardware is to get the 'analog' sound it produces through it circuits. Not just functionality. In the case op this plugin, if the is no emulation of the tubes - or whatever technical stuff it is used - it's won't do much more the the efault Cockos compressor right? Maybe only the 'all-in' mode is unique to this plugin. I think the whole purpose of emulating vintage gear is to get the 'sound' and maybe the user interface you might be used to 'in the old days'. So i thought maybe this JS plugin would do something similar. Anyway, thanks for your great Reaper tutorials! I realy enjoy them.

    Can you please help me with this... If ANYONE has the answer to this, I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Why do kick drums in MIDI software drum kits sound like a faint "tap"?? Every drum kit I've downloaded is the same! In the real world, it's the other way around... Kick drums are the biggest, loudest, most powerful drum, and center piece of EVERY DRUM KIT! A kick drum's sound in the real world is far more robust and much louder than the toms or the snare, yet in a midi drum kit it is by far the weakest! Is there a way I can tweak a setting or do something to get a midi kick drum to sound like a REAL KICK DRUM????? THANKS!!!

    • @Ihadtosettleforthis
      @Ihadtosettleforthis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a total rookie but I find EQ and compression helps. Use EQ to boost the low end to make the kick sound deeper and fatter. Can also try a bit of mid-range and treble to get a bit more "definition". Compression can level out the volume of the kick sample over it's duration so it sustains longer, rather than a quick tap. Again I'm a beginner though, this is just what I've found. Maybe someone else can suggest something?

    The batches taken as an example have already been processed by the compressor, this is noticeable by the signal shape. therefore, the difference between a pure signal and a processed one using 1175 is completely inaudible. We should have taken the raw drums. Maybe I'm the only one who can't hear the difference?
