      Nads, the other option is (as you know) go and live in Thailand where your back is always warm and you can get a massage every week for 250 Baht. Not to mention a decent diet.
      I have seen guys in their 80's still walking the course and still enjoying their golf. What a wonderful place to live and play. You lucky devil!

    Greetings again from Arizona, Simon. Lee Trevino would definitely be smiling while watching this,. BTW, My Orange Whip sits permanently in my bag. Builds muscles, teaches tempo, and is a great five-minute warmup when I arrive at the course too late for a range session prior to my round.

      I love Lee, I've been watching him since I was a kid. He used to come over here and record Pro Celebrity golf. He was up against Tony Jacklin and they had a celebrity each with some shots. Famously Terry Wogan holed a putt over 100 feet on camera during that series. I think the BBC would record lots of episodes in a week.
      Those trainers are very good for getting stretched out. Although the driver feels like nothing after using it. Hope you are well Sean.

    I also suffer from body stiffness, & loss of body rotation. I've started yoga to help with this problem, results are not completed I find myself less tired at the end of a round. One thing I find is that few golfers prepare for their game with a warm up of any type.
    Love your approach on your vids, enjoy your real approach to a great game . Thanks.

      Hello Paul, nice to find some stretching that helps. I think my Dad did yoga too. Perhaps it's time for me?
      Not many do warm up. I would get to the course early on a sunday morning for the comp. Wander out into the field with my tube of balls and most of the time it was myself and one other person. I never quite understood why people don't give themselves the best chance in this expensive hobby/sport of ours? Cheers

    Finally someone who has similar pain and mobility issues to myself. 2 hip operations and countless physiotherapy visits have helped. I have played for many years with the closed stance approach which provides for a better turn and longer backswing. If I swing with an open stance my turn on the backswing is reduced, "locked" even which affects swing path through the hitting area and the ball tends to go left. To combat this I would have to swing more "in to out" and use my hands more to square the clubface. Practice even more I guess....hmmm....

      Hello Alistair, I may of had an accident a long time ago but at least I didn't play contact sport after I left school. So many guys queueing up for new hips and knees.
      Well, this video is just a suggestion. I always say if it doesn't fit your game then discard it. If you're curious try it. Go find a Pro your own age not a youngster who wants you to swing with the latest Tour trend. Stretch, exercise, walk. But not too much. A heavy club helps.
      Let's see if we can keep going a bit longer. That's it. Thanks for the comment.

    Great video. Senior golfers should use graphite shafts. This will help take over from the lack of flexibility the body has lost through aging. One of the major problems which occurs through aging and the senior golfer is a lack of mobility in the Thoracic Spine. Lack of mobility in the Thoracic Spine, loads the lumbar spine too much creating lower back pain. So it’s worth while working on Thoracic mobility as well. Thanks again for the video. Stuart

    • @thehairygolfer

      Thanks Stuart. I'm not far off wanting softer and lighter shafts. Next time I go for a change I'll try and future proof them. Go lighter than I need right now.
      Lack of mobility is a real problem, turning the top half against the bottom half. I can't do it like I used to. 35 years in an office chair doesn't help. Thanks for the comment.

    I like all the options you describe and I agree. I had a student in his late 70's who was an Iron
    worker and very strong. He tried to kill the ball all the time. So I had him drop his trail foot
    back about 2 " for a closed stance and place the toe of the club anywhere from the middle
    of the ball to inside of the ball at address. Because he comes slightly over the top and swings
    so hard he would hit the ball pretty straight. He can't hit woods or hybrids only irons.
    He hits a 3 iron 240 yards with his best 260 on a down hill par 4. I have never seen a guy this
    old hit an Iron so far.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I played against a guy years ago. Pretty talented and he played with a very hooded face and he was very quick. He was hitting a 4 iron around 225 yards back in 1996. Quite a long ball with what passed for balls back then. But he was so hooded he really couldn't do a lot else. He was an easy beat in the end. He couldn't hit anything longer than a 4 iron as he had no loft to play with. My Dad was far taller and stronger than me. He used to hit an old 1 iron back in the wooden woods days. Was always longer than his mates with that 1 iron. Cheers

    What is good that equipment has gotten better over the years which helps a bit with distance. I have had a lot of breaks in my over 30 years of playing. And when I started playing back up regularly in 2018 I realized I need a modern driver. I was still using one from the earlier 2000's. It helped a lot. I have been practing with my follow through with my simulator club hope this will trasfer to my normal clubs. I also have to take care of my back as well. I think that is where my leg pain was coming from which caused me pains for the last two months. Only at the begin of this month has it gone away. Good tips as usual Simon!!🏌‍♂⛳😀👍

      Drivers and balls help. But o nthe other hand a 46 inch shaft is harder to square up. Another issue is sticking with shafts that are too stiff and heavy for us. I will be getting fitted next summer and will try and 'future proof' my clubs by going lighter and softer.
      Sitting down is very bad for us Zax and we both do it a lot.

      @@thehairygolfer I have a 44 inch driver it was 43,5 but since I put a new grip I measured it as 44 so it is about a lenght of a 3 wood. Might not get as much length but more accuracy.
      Yes I sit way too much at work. That is way I have been riding my e-Bike to work since the end Of April. At least to the day and swing shifts. I think that is what also help my leg pain as well.
      I got my new irons last year with graphite stiff/ regular shafts on them and I think they are way easier to hit. so I think when you get fitted next year check out the graphite options!!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ZaxDrumsGolfandMore 44? That is unusual in this day and age. Mine is 45 and 44 would not do me any harm at all. I'm not playing golf this evening but instead I will sit in front of this editing. Stupid isn't it when I've been sat here all day working.
      I've got 105 gram steel stiff at the moment with a soft tip. I can quite happily swing 65grams graphite. As long as the heads don't have a ton of offset to make me hook I will be fine. Might even go regular on the driver, more height and a more reliable draw instead of having to try very hard.

    Excellent advice. Actually I've been playing so long have tried all closed, open etc etc swing up swing down off front foot off center swinng to the right swing to the left. This year I've gradually come to hitting open stance especially with my fairway hybrids as it seems hitting off the ground further impedes the follow through. Those hybrids have become so reliable its like hitting a pitching wedge. Also own a cheapo heavy speed stck type device which I do not use enough to make a differenve.
    As I recall, Gary Player , now about 86 years old, still gets a swing speed of about 86 he is a stay fit advocate

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've fiddled with stuff over the years. Used to hit a draw that became a snap hook. The switched to fade whch has worked well for years until I pull it. I still find a little open is best for me. Hybrids are a god send for a slower swing. I may be changing the 4 iron next year but I've just had a lesson and I'm hitting it better so maybe not.
      Gary really stands out, one of the hardest working Pros of all time. He was my Dad's favourite golfer. He might go on forever. Cheers

      Some 15 years ago I suffered a dislocated elbow (there ia a story to tell here over a beer!!)
      Anyway, I was told that I had to keep moving it and to do a simple exercise to keep stretching the range of movement.
      In the end I set up a simple system of tracing my arm onto a sheet of paper and then measuring the angle. This could then be graphed and you could see the progress. It certainly helped me regain movement and I've had no problems since until recently where I think lack of activity has led to loss of muscle strength I think I need to invest in one of those weighted clubs .......

      Hello David, I grew up playing on clay soil and meadow grass that goes a bit bare and hard in the summer. I play the ball I bit back anyway compared to playing off decent turf. It's just the way I learnt on hard ground - get the ball first. With the driver I would say it's a fraction back because I'm wanting to push it to the right a bit.
      That's the best way I can describe what I do and why. I guess if I changed to a new course and turf the ball would creep forward a bit with irons as it's sat up better.

    At about 73yo I found it difficult to break 100. I blamed my clubs first, then I blamed the foursome I played with and started to blame walking 18 holes. I changed my driver, I played with others and I started riding a cart. Quadruple bogie and worse headed my way. So what was my problem? Basically I suspected that I just wasn't physically fit.
    At 75yo decided to do some of the aerobic exercises on TH-cam. 5 days of repeated exercises I shot an 88. Continuing these exercises for the next 2 weeks I scored an 87 then an 85. The results were like almost immediate. Aerobic exercises treats the whole body, ankles, hamstring, biceps, triceps, neck, range of motion, balance, memory and coordination. I haven't tried the orange whip but I'm wondering what muscles would that train and would that be enough to bring about the results that I got.

    You want to hit it long when you’re old, then learn to hit it long when you are young and keep as fit and flexible as you can to maintain the distance for as long as possible. You will not suddenly start hitting drives 250 yards down the middle at 60 years of age if you couldn’t do that when you were in your forties. Practice your short game to maintain reasonable scores but you have to accept that old Father Time spares no one from golfing decline. Just accept your limitations and enjoy playing golf.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never been long. I'm too short for that. I think I peaked at 101mph. I'm low 90's now. Maybe 96 on a really good day. It's trying to maintain that for as long as we can and I see people who have got in their own way a bit. We all do. We get lazy too. Agree about the short game, without it and my continuous practice I would be a 10 handicap. Cheers

  • @golfinginthailand
    @golfinginthailand 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This is all true. However, I want to know how to hit a draw to use as you do in your videos. I think you should practice both and use as needed. Also, if you have the swing speed (maybe not your audience in this video) you will not lose distance. I have played with many golfers who draw a ball and hit it 30 yards past me in the air. I hit the ball about 270 with a driver and a fade. I will work with some of your thoughts on this and see what happens. I'm an old stiff dude as well. As usual, you will have added to my knowledge. Great video.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      How do i try to hit a draw? I try to copy Jack Nicklaus, aim right with a closed face. Although most of the time I just pull it to be honest.
      This video is aimed at people who hit less than 200 yards carry. With a swing speed of 75mph or less with the driver there is no height o nthe ball and it goes to ground very quickly. The closed down stance and low loft on a driver is not good for these people.
      It is assumed the draw goes further but only if you have a decent swing speed to start with. Mine is 95mph and I hit a fade further than a draw. Because I can get through the damn ball properly when i'm open.

    Tape a couple of old wedges or irons together and theres your heavy club! Only problem us you can't take a propper grip.
    Its an interesting topic and while i agree that everyone should do as much physical movement and improvement as they can, golf needs to do more to get people playing shorter courses. I'll keep harping on about it because it just makes so much difference to the enjoyment of the game.

      I used to use 2 clubs Robert but always found it hard to grip. Can't do it now my hands hurt too. I agree about shorter courses. Even ordainry golf clubs move the tees back as they want the course to play harder for a the tiny few who can hit it as far as the Pros. The worst I saw was a par 5 turned into a par 4 for the sake of about 3 people. The rest of us suffered with the change. I will be playing some shorter courses in the future on my away days. The trouble with all this stuff Simon is 😶... for one thing, the left foot back is not anything to do with enhancing swing, it is to do with stopping a slice. Every pro/teacher or whatever has the 'don''t do this because' phrase or 'if you do this, the following will be the result' , and this is the reason' . I can only relate my own experience and hope it may be useful to someone. I'm very much give it go and if you hate it then stop it. Better still find an old Pro who teaches by eye and not by data. Hell Tim, that is a very decent handicap for 58, I've crept up to 6 but on some courses only get 4. I never quite conquered the game and got below a 'real' 5 handicap. Well done.
      Gentle stretching is helping me, doing it very much little and often. 3 minutes every time I get out of this damn chair which I have sat in all day and now in the evening editing a video. It's now automatic to get up once an hour and do the hand in pocket. I point my toes 5 to 1 to help the turn. The days of hitting into "a firm left side" like they used to teach in the 90's are long behind me. I find the only way to get my left hip out of the way is to put it out of the way before I start the backswing.
      I really don't undertand the right foot 6 inches back. Lee Trevino was a wonderful golfer but he is no teacher. Old guys need to be open not shut.
