I eat veggies with yellowing leaves and I remove soft bits from carrots and eat the rest, I rely on my local food banks but often they give us veggies that are about to go off so I have to batch-cook immediately. Very grateful to the kind people that donate
Carleigh B, you get a standing ovation 👏 from me, my friend. I am just so proud to have you as part of the vegan plant-based community. I cant wait to cook my way through this beauty as I have your first cookbook. I seriously feel I could clear off my cookbook shelf and just put yours there solo. Wonderful!
Great show. I'm a "scrappy chef " from way back. My parents grew up during the depression, and my mother never wasted food. Every container was emptied completely, and even potato peels were washed, seasoned, and roasted in the oven to make sort of potato "chips". I still hate to waste anything!
So glad you had ‘our’ Carleigh on the show! 😉🇨🇦🙌🏻 Love her & so happy for her success.
I love this cookbook!! Just made the skillet lasagna and my non-vegan husband loves it too! He marked the page to be sure I’d make it again. So sorry for your loss, I know your mom is proud of you. Take care.💜
This episode is definitely on my "top ten" list among the hundreds of Exam Room episodes I've listened to over the years. I promptly purchased the new Scrappy Cooking cookbook after listening. So many fun and practical ideas for healthy and environmentally responsible food! I love the "Got this? Make that" chapter. And you have inspired me to henceforth skip the plastic bags in the produce section of my supermarket. Thank you Chuck and Carleigh!
It is so special that your mum’s photo is in your book. 💜
I wash and reuse bags at home and at grocery stores
Worms in a worm composting farm do love coffee grounds and of course they make a great body scrub.
I'm happy to say that food waste in my household is minimal (like 5% max) but I'm always looking for ways to use the things that go into the compost bin, so using peels is "a-peeling" (yes I went there).
You sure did. Lol
I’m in Canada, have never used a delivery service and it is STILL stupid expensive. Costco yes, but I go there at least once a month still. I love Costco 😅 I am far too picky to let someone else grab my items. I know I’ll be disappointed, especially on the best before dates. Often in stores now I’m seeing BBD today or expired and it’s still full price!
London fog granola with vanilla bean paste instead of chocolate.
I am loving this!!! Carleigh I have been following you for sometime now…I am buying your cookbook today!!! Thanks Chuck!!!
I have both cookbooks and love them. I have also been a subscriber to the app Plant You. I was trying to access this yesterday and I appear to be locked out. There is a message in my settings that says my subscription expired yesterday, 5/25 and there is no option to renew.
Nor do I see Plant You in the app store any longer. I am very upset about this. What happened?
My book should arrive tomorrow and I can’t wait!
Given the title, I guess I was expecting a lot more recipes made from scrappy ingredients. I still really like a lot of the recipes and look forward to making many of em soon.
Just received both books last week 😊
Put them on your rose bushes!
Good
Oil in Earl Grey tea? I'll have to check the ingredients in mine, thanks for the tip Chuck
Oil of Bergamot
Love her first book and so far loving this one as well ❤ I need to know if I can sub mushrooms for eggplant in say the « ground meat » recipe. I really do not like eggplant and don’t buy it. So if I can sub in mushrooms in most recipes where eggplant is featured, that would be great. otherwise I just can’t see me making those specific recipes.
I heard her speaking with Rip Esselstein and Carleigh is not a fan of eggplant either but says you don't notice in this recipe. She is also in favour of substitions.
@@lisabarnetson1362 the thing is I would not honour of my way to buy an eggplant, so it’s not really scrappy recipe then for me. Was hoping I could still make it but use something I do have normally like mushrooms.
@@taniaallan5702I have seen mushrooms used in a "meat" dish before. I guess best case you try it and its a go!! Good luck.
I always use mushrooms in "meaty" recipes. Depending on the mushroom, you can mince them up for "ground meat", slice them for fajitas, chunk them for stews, etc. There are tons of videos to show you how to prep them.
It sounds like you need Lidl and Aldi in North America, they're the "cheap" German supermarkets that have taken the UK by storm, they used to be very basic and cheap, now their stores look good but their prices have crept up in the cost of living crisis. But they're still cheaper than other supermarkets and they've encouraged competition so expensive supermarkets have started to match their prices, at least on fresh produce, which is what we whole good vegans eat the most. The only drawback with Lidl and Aldi is that they don't deliver and no plants to do so in future
USA has Aldi
They have all three in the States Aldi Süd, Aldi Nord and Lidl. US Aldi is Aldi Süd, Trader Joe's is Aldi Nord and of course Lidl. You can find a huge number of grocery hauls videos just for Aldi or Lidl
❤🙏
Btw, hail King Tut.
